Cried Over It and Stayed at Home
    In the Chronicle last Saturday morning,
it was announced that Messrs. J. H. Howie, L. P.
Howie and Robert Alexander, of this county, had
pulled up stakes and struck out for Washington
Territory. The Howie boys did go, but Bob
Alexander remained behind. Bob got as far as
Charlotte, but when train time came he showed
signs of weakening. He persuaded the Howie boys
to wait for him until the next train, and when
that train came in Bob was in tears. He fairly
boohooed at the idea of leaving. "I can't go,"
he said, as the tears trickled down his cheeks,
"and leave all my friends here. I may never see
them again." The time was up, Bob remained here
and his tears dried up as he saw the train move
away bearing his two friends. His conclusion
to stick to old Mecklenburg was a wise one.
