I am the granddaughter of G.W. GARDNER who belonged to Company A, 
40th Regiment and was discharged on Close of the War.
 
Give connecting links between applicant and Confederate ancestor: 
Mother was Mannie Gardner WOOTEN, daughter of G. W. GARDNER.
My present address is Kinston, County Lenoir, State N.C.
Remarks: Grandfather joined the army when he was 17 years old and 
served through the entire war, he was slightly wounded once and he had a 
Brother killed in Battle.

I was born on the twelth day of January 1910.
Town: Kinston, County: Lenoir, State: North Carolina.

I am the grandaughter of Capt. T. D. JEFFRESS who belonged to Company 
G. 56th Regiment and was Hon. Discharged on ----(nothing written)

Give connecting links between applicant and Confederate ancestor: 
C.A.JEFFRIES, son of Capt. T.D. JEFFRIES, is my father. (grandaughter of 
Captain Thomas D. JEFFRESS)

My present address is 608 Pollock St., Kinston, County: Lenoir, 
State: North Carolina.

Remarks: Thos. D. JEFFRESS was elected Capt. Of a company of Infantry 
organized at Wylliesburg, Charlotte Co., Va. In May 1861. This 
company afterwards became Co. G., 56th Regiment of Infantry and so 
continued until surrender at Appomattox in 1865. Was at first at war with 
Floyd's Brigade in the ---- army and then ordered to Va. In June 1862 
and assigned to Picketts Brigade and at close of war in Pickett's 
Division. Engaged  in battles of Fort Donelson, Tenn. 1862 Drury's Bluff, 
Va., 7 days battles around Richmond in 1862 and then Co. in battles 
of Pickett's Brigade and Division. Re-elected Capt. In 1862 at the 
re-organization of the Confederate troops of Va., Capt. JEFFRESS, was 
for a short while Commandant of Libby Prison, and several months 
Commander of Post and Provost Marshall of Lynchburg, Va.
My great uncle Theodore HASSELL? Joined Co. A, 17th N.C. Regt. As a 
private in the Spring 1861, was captured at Hatteras in Aug. of that 
year. Taken as a prisoner to Governors Island, New York. Taken then to 
Fort Harris?, Boston Harbor and exchanged in Feb. 1862. Was elected 
Lieutenant of his company and afterwards ------ Sargent of Gen. 
Martin's Brigade. He was a brave & faithful soldier, served his country 
'til near the end of the war. When he was instantly killed at  Wyses? 
Fork near Kinston, N.C., March 7th, 1865.

And left there nine days before he was taken to a hospital where he 
died. Later his body was brought home and buried in the old MOSELEY 
burial ground out from Kinston.
