CAPTAIN CROOM'S COMPANY
North Carolina Local Defense
(Kinston Guards, Kinston Provost Guards)
Captain Croom's Company, North Carolina Local Defense, was known as the
Kinston Guards or Kinston Provost Guard. The unit was formed from
Greene and Lenoir Counties for local defense and special service, and
for Provost duty in defense of Kinston, North Carolina. An article
about the unit is being prepared by William S. (Chip) Pate, Jr., Ph.D.,
who compiled this roster from United States Archives microfilm. Chip is
the great, great grandson of Thomas W. Hart, Private, Capt. Croom's
Company, and resident of Greene County near Hookerton. Anyone who has
any information about this unit or its activities, including any

OFFICERS
CROOM, ALLEN, Captain
Born in Greene County. Reported present and sick on a roll dated
December 31, 1863, and present through August 31, 1864. Prior to
service in Capt. Croom's Company, he served as 2nd Lieutenant of Co. K,
33rd Regiment, North Carolina Troops. He later was appointed Captain of
Co. E, 61st Regiment, North Carolina Troops, on an unspecified date
(probably July-August 1862) to rank from April 1, 1862. Company records
indicate that he was captured and paroled at Kinston on December 14,
1862; however, records of the Federal Provost Marshal do not
substantiate that report. Reported sick in hospital at Charleston,
South Carolina, and at Wilmington in January-February, 1863. Reported
absent on sick furlough from March 3 through June 30, 1863. resigned on
July 1, 1863. Reason he resigned is not reported. [Summary of service
