This company, known as the "North Carolina Guards," was raised in Lenoir
County and enlisted in April, 1861. On April 28, 1861, the company was ordered
to Fort Macon, but is was not received into service and returned home. It was
then ordered to New Bern, where it was mustered into service on June 6, 1861;
it was later assigned to the 27th Regiment as Company C. After joining the
regiment the company functioned as a part of the regiment, and its history for
the war period is reported as a part of the regimental history.

The information contained in the following company roster was compiled
principally from company muster rolls for June 6, 1861-June, 1862; September-
October, 1862; and September 1864-February, 1865. No company muster rolls were
found for July-August, 1862; November, 1862-August, 1864; or for the period
after February, 1865. Valuable information was obtained also from primary
records such as the Roll of Honor, medical records, prisoner of war records,
discharge certificates, and pension applications, and from secondary sources
such as postwar rosters and histories, cemetery records, and records of the
United Daughters of the Confederacy.
