CHARLES WESTBROOK FAMILY BIBLE

The following family record from the Charles Westbrook family Bible was transcribed
by Jack D. Elliott, Jr. of West Point, MS on February 5 and 12, 2002 from a
photostatic copy of the original, with the copy being in the Bryan Public Library,
West Point, MS. In that not all words on the photostatic copy are clear, this
transcript was supplemented by and correlated with a transcript on pages 253-254
of a volume of bound typescripts entitled "Bible Records and a Few Prerequisite
Items," compiled by Allie Everhart Miller, Mississippi DAR, 1934-1936.

According to the Miller compilation, the Bible was printed in 1816 at Brattleborough,
Vermont by John Holbrook.

I refer to this as the Charles Westbrook family Bible, because all entries center
around Charles Westbrook, his probable siblings, and his descendants. Charles
Westbrook was apparently born in 1774 in the part of Dobbs County, NC that became
Lenoir County, and died in Lowndes (now Clay) County, MS in 1843.

The geographical framework for the people listed in general begins in North Carolina,
primarily Lenoir County, then shifts during the late 1830s to the portion of Lowndes
County (present-day Clay County), Mississippi around West Point.

For further information on the Charles Westbrook family see Nell Coleman Ropp,
"Westbrook Family," pages 785-786 in CLAY COUNTY [MS] HISTORY, Curtis Media
Corporation, Dallas, TX, 1988.

Simon Westbrook December 14th 1776

Wm. Westbrook Dceast the 7th Decbr. 1778

[note: I initially assumed that this entry, placed among birth entries, was actually
for a death. However, this seemed somewhat improbable, given that his name is listed
in chronological order with a long sequence of births. After thinking about this it
occurred that the reference to being deceased may actually have not been a verb and
thereby indicating that William had died on 7 Dec. 1778. Instead, it seems probable
that when these entries were recorded decades after (this Bible was not published
until 1816), William was dead and that "Dceast" was added after his name as a modifier.]
