             Frozen to Death
Special to the Globe.
   BIRD ISLAND, Minn., March 27.-- The dead body of
John Thavis was found yesterday morning entangled in a
barbed wire fence on the farm of Thomas Otto, about
half a mile southwest of this village. Thavis was in 
the village Friday, considerably intoxicated. He evid-
ently ran into the fence last night while going to his
farm about two miles soutwest of the village, and
unable to free himself, perished by freezing. He was
about 70 years old and leaves a widow, several grown-up
daughters and a son.

    On Saturday morning last our village was shocked
to learn that the body of John Thavis, a farmer who
lived two miles southwest of Bird Island, had been
found dead, near Thos. Otto's barn. Examination
proved the report to be true. He had been in the
village the day previous, and got badly under the
influence of liquor, and had apparently started for
home, after dark, got off the track, fallen into the
water enough to thoroughly wet his clothing and 
finally came to the west end of Mr. Ott's hog pature.
Here he had followed the wire, until he came to the
southeast corner, where he had fallen, one hand still
clinging to the wire, and so was found dead. He had
probably eaten nothing since morning, drank villainous
liquor and this, with the wet clothing and cold night
was too much for nature and he succumbed. Coroner Clay
was notified, came down, held and inquest and developed
the facts practically as above.....Renville Union
