Letter of Thomas Bennett (1815-1896) to his brother in Point Lookout, Maryland, POW Camp

Dear Brother,


		After my love to you
this will let you know that I am well
and sincerely hope these times may find you
enjoying the same blessing.  We received
your letter of the 28th of November last and was
very happy indeed to hear from you tho
connetion are all well.  Was glad to
hear that both boys was all well
you ----- write often to let us
know how you are getting on as
you know we are always anxious
to hear from you.
Give my love to all the boys, hope
that you may all return safe before
long.
Well I will close for this time.  The
family all join in sending much love
to you.  I have only hired one able Negro
man this year.

(submitter note:  Howard Bennett, a private in the 21st Virginia Cavalry, was captured on 12 Nov
1864, by the 2nd Cavalry Division, Department of West Virginia, at Nineveh, Virginia.  He arrived
at Point Lookout, Maryland on 18 Nov 1864, as a Prisoner of War.  According to the letter, he wrote
home on the 28 Nov 1864 to notify his family of his whereabouts.  

He was paroled at Point Lookout, Maryland and transferred for exchange in early 1865.  The Paroled
Prisoners (2,051 in the group) were received at Coxes Landing, James River, Virginia on Feb 14-15,
1865 by Lt. Col. John E. Mulford, U.S. Asst. Aget. for Exchange of Prisoners.  On 18 Feb 1865, he 
appearson a Muster Roll of a detachment of paroled and exchanged prisoners at Camp Lee, near Richmond,
VA.

The above letter was written on 1 Feb 1865, however, not mailed until 1 Jul 1865.  Since Howard
was no longer at Point Lookout, Maryland, the letter was retained by the Postal Service.  It is on
file with the National Archives, Washington, D.C.)
