Harrold/Summer Deed, 1809 - Patrick Co. VA

Deed to Jonathan Harrold from Thomas Summer, 1809
            Patrick County, Virginia


This Indenture made this twenty first day of September in the year of our 
Lord one thousand eight hundred and nine between Thomas Summer of the County 
of Stokes and State of North Carolina of the one part and Jonathan Harrold of 
the County of Patrick and State of Virginia of the other part, Witnesseth 
that for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and twenty dollars in 
hand paid by the said Jonathan Harrold to the said Thomas Summer, a receipt 
whereof is hereby acknowledged the said Thomas Summer hath given granted [ ? 
?] and confirmed and by these presents both give grant [?} and confirm unto 
the said Jonathan Harrold a certain tract or parcel of land lying & being in 
the County of Patrick and State of Virginia on the Blue Ridge on Mountain and 
on the waters of the Ararat River bounded as follows, beginning on a poplar 
running North and East one hundred and twenty poles crossing a branch of 
Johnson's Creek to a chestnut tree, thence N37 W sixty four poles to a 
chestnut tree thence North 62 E sixty poles to a white oak thence North 30 
West sixty poles to a chestnut tree, then north 6 W forty eight poles to a 
chestnut oak thence S17 W one hundred and seventy six poles crossing a branch 
of Lovell's Creek to a chestnut tree, thence S (?) E47 poles to the beginning 
containing seventy two acres so the same more to have and to hold the above  
said granted land & premises withal & singular the appurtenances and all 
woods waters & mines minerals hereditaments and improvements to the same. In 
any wise belonging and appertaining to him the said Jonathan Harrold his 
heirs and assigns forever and the said Thomas Summer for himself his heirs 
executors and administrators doth covenant and agree & with the said Jonathan 
Harrold his heirs and assigns that the said Jonathan Harrold his heirs and 
assigns shall and may forever hereafter peacefully and quietly have hold  
occupy possess and enjoy the above given land & premises with all its 
appurtenances free clear and discharged of and from the [?] or molestation of 
any person or persons whatever whatsoever and the said Thomas Summer doth 
farther bind and oblige himself, his heirs, executors & administrators to 
warrant defend the right & title of the aforesaid land & premises to the said 
Jonathan Harrold his heirs and assigns against all other and former rights 
titles and claims. In witnesseth whereof I the said Thomas Summer have here 
unto set my hand and affixed my seal the day and year above written for the 
purposes herein contained.

The deed was proved in court by the oaths of the witnesses thereto to be the

Note: Jonathan Harrold is the son of William Harrold and Frances Sturnam, 
grandson of Jonathan Harrold and Catherine Hiatt, and great grandson of 
Richard Harrold and Mary Beals.
