Letter
"Camp near Petersburg, VA June 21st, 1964

Mrs. Sally Walters
Madam

It is with deep sorrow that I have to record the death of LT. W. R. WALTERS.

He was instantly killed yesterday evening the 20th while he was sharpshooting from
the breastworks that we were behind. He died in a few minutes, shot through the
head and appeared to die as I am informed perfectly easy - Remarkably easy and with
great calmness. I was not present at the time. Lieut. has rendered great service
to his county for which he has layed down his life.

During the last forty five days we have been generally engaged more or less with
the enemy. During this time Lieut. has ever been present allways in the front line
discharging his duties nobly, __________during this time with great coolness, and
allways cool and calm during an engagement and seemed eager for the fray. There is
no one acted with any more galantry than did LIEUT. WALTERS. We are sorry to give
him up , but we are compelled to submit. Just a few minutes and a little while
before SAMUEL L. ROE of my Co. was killed, another good solider gone. Lieut. had
several little things on hand which we will try to take care of. I enclose two
dollars all the money he had on him. I also enclose a certificate from the
Quartermaster showing when he was last paid. This must be forwarded with your
application to the Auditors office at Richmond to collect from the government what
is due him which is six months and twenty days about five hundred and thirty three
dollars and thirty three cents. LIEUT. BAILEY and CHARLY WALTERS are making
arrangements to have him decently buried. If there is any thing you wish looked
after in relation to his effects we will take pleasure in doing all that is in our
power.

    Very Respectfully
    Your Obed. Serv.
     Thomas H. Jackson
