The Danbury Reporter June 3, 1925
Danville, VA., May 30Fletcher Whitlock, sentenced to 20 years in the state
penitentiary as an accomplice in the brutal murder of Ada Whaling, a mountain
girl, a few months ago, is having escaped the Patrick County jail with three
other prisoners, Clifford Going, Hobart Slate, and General Martin, who were held
for lesser crimes.
The Patrick jail has long since been condemned and it has been the recent
practice to house dangerous men in nearby county jails. On the night in
question the men either picked the lock on the main door or else found that the
door did not close properly, in any event the jailer found the door open and the
men gone. Some 12 prisoners had the opportunity to leave but only the four
mentioned elected to go. Commonwealth's Attorney Burton will ask for a
substantial reward for the recapture of Whitlock.
