Fairfax Herald September 15, 1922
Danville. Ewell Cox, prominent Patrick County man, who was shot by one of three
negroes who waylaid him near Fayerdale, died at Lucy Lester Hospital, in
Martinsville. Sheriff B F. Stultz reported that Cox made no antemortem statement.
In fact his condition after the operation was one of coma. It was seen early in
the night that he stood small chance of surviving. After being wounded Cox shot
and killed George Scott, one of his aggressors. According to the Henry County
officers, Harry Smith is being sought as one of the two fugitives, Cox having
named this man as in the party which ambushed him.

Additional Comments:
Euel Cox was a prominent businessman which ran a store at the corner of where
Heidelbach School Road intersects with Union Bridge Road.
