GEORGE A. COFFEE,
removed to Philadelphia in 1855. He was a district attorney of the county
from 1852 to 1854, acting instead of Joseph Kemp, who had been elected. He
was the United States district attorney for the Eastern district, at
Philadelphia, during the war, and died about the year 1865. His acquirements
were very extensive, and his talents of the highest order. Fluent, poetical,
imagination unsurpassed, his addresses to a jury were intellectual treats.
His talents, however, seemed better fitted for the rostrum than the court
room. As an orator, he was learned, eloquent and instructive; but he lacked
that practical force, that homely illustration, which is so convincing with a
jury.
