Supreme Court Case found at the NC Archives

Lenoir County 1841

Lenoir Court Sept 1840 - Joel Fore on 1 August 1840 took into his house Susan 
Chestnut and they did live and bed and cohabit together without being legally 
married - they did have children as a result of the cohabitation - Joel was a 
free person of color - Susan was white - the def offered a Marriage License 
from the Clerk authorizing the marriage before 1838 before the General Assembly 
made it illegal (for races to intermarry) - the marriage was solemnized in 1840

The Court objected to the marriage and the cohabitation.
