Died

Lately in Edgecombe County of a painful chronic malady, Amos Johnston, Esq. in
the 70th year of his age. In his death, both the public and many individuals
have to experience the loss of a friend. His long life has been devoted to
public and private usefulness. He commenced his career in life under peculiar
disadvantages but being blest with a strong judgment, retentive memory and an
industrious disposition, he overcame every difficulty. He acted many years as
chairman of the court of his county, besides performing much other business in
this office in which he gave general satisfaction. Indeed, to do justice to
the merits of a man like this, (who sought not the applause of the world) we
should "follow him to the chamber and closet, attend him in the bosom of his
family, and see him in all the undress of life fulfiling the domestic
charities, and the dearest relations as husband and father." We should also
behold him as a neighbor, setting examples of morality, industry and economy
dispensing the means of life and comfort to the poor, not indeed, with
indiscreet profusion, but with that prudent economy which ___ not his own
funds to be exhausted, with that charity which "faileth not" suffering none to
go away with their wants unabated. His reward is in heaven, where he had
professed confident hopes of meeting his God in peace.
