HUBERT ERDMAN BRILEY
YOUNG MAN DIES WHEN THROWN BY MOTOR SCOOTER
HUBERT BRILEY, VICTIM OF ACCIDENT ON PRETLOW AVENUE, SUFFERS FRACTURED SKULL
AND BROKEN NECK.
Funeral services for Hubert Erdman Briley, 21, who was fatally injured on
Friday morning, May 28, were conducted from the Holland Funeral Home on Sunday
afternoon at three o'clock by Rev. J.W. Ward, pastor of the Pentecostal
Holiness Church, Suffolk. Interment was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, and
pallbearers being Marcelle Jordan of Suffolk, Mills and Calvin Tomblin of
Zuni, and Wallace and Raymond Mason and Oliver Glover of Franklin.
Young Mr. Briley, an employee of the Taggart Corporation, received the
injuries which resulted in his death about 9:30 o'clock, when he was thrown
from the motor scooter he was riding. The accident occurred on Pretlow Avenue
about three-tenths of a mile from its confluence with South Street.
According to Dr. T.A. Morgan, county coroner, Briley, who made his home
with his sister, Mrs. Carl Mason, at the William Bradshaw dairy farm on the
South Quay Road, and his friend, William Tyree, of about the same age, were
proceeding towards Franklin on their motor scooters. Briley slowed down to
make some adjustment to his machine, then speeded up to overtake his friend.
What actually caused the accident may never be known, but according to Tyree
the Briley scooter bumped into Tyree's machine, knocking him into the nearby
ditch. When Tyree recovered, he found Briley lying unconscious on the pavement.
Workmen from the housing project in Meadowbrook picked Briley up and
carried him in a truck to Raiford Memorial Hospital, where it was found that
he was suffering from multiple fractures of the skull, severe concussion of
the brain, and a broken neck. He died at 1:30 o'clock Friday afternoon without
regaining consciousness. Tyree's injuries proved superficial.
Originally from Tarboro, N.C., young Briley was the son of Mr. and Mrs.
E.M. Briley of Zuni, who survive. Other survivors are his sisters, Mrs. Carl
Mason of Franklin and Misses Effie and Eva Dell Briley of Zuni; and five
brothers, Julian, Earl, Delma, James and William Briley, all of Zuni.
