JOHN MCDONALD YIELDS TO DEATH
AGED RESIDENT OF LOWNDES COUTY PASSED AWAY THIS MORNING AT HOME IN VALDOSTA
Mr. John McDonald, well known and liked Valdosta resident, died at the home of
his daughter, Mrs. H.R. Rivers, 215 West Hill Avenue at 530 this morning.
Mr. McDonald would have been 90 years of age on February 28, and had spent all
of his life in Lowndes County.
He followed in death his wife, who died only five months ago. She was the
former Miss Virginia Caroline Dowling. They were married in 1882.
He is survived by five sons, W.A. Chester McDonald, and Perry McDonald of
Valdosta, Roy McDonald of Orlando, Fla., and H.W. McDonald Sr. of Winter
Haven, Fla., and two daughters, Mrs. H.R. Rivers of Valdosta and Mrs. C.M.
Fields of Winter Haven, Fla.
He is also survived by 24 grandchildren, seven of whom are in the armed
services, and 16 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock PM at the Cat
Creek Primitive Baptist Church, of which he was a member.
The body will be carried to the home at 215 West Hill Avenue this afternoon
from the Carson McLane Funeral Home, and will remain there until removed for
burial.
Additional Comments:
John McDonald was the son of William McDonald and the Grandson of Isham
McDonald. Isham McDonald was the first Scottish immigrant ancestor in his
particular lineage, and fought in the American Revolutionary War. William
McDonald, John's father, was a member of the Georgia Militia and participated
in the armed conflict against Native Americans in this state.
John McDonald was married to Virginia Caroline Dowling (McDonald) and was the
brother in law of Henry Dowling, one of the final national commanders of The
United Confederate Veterans, and the last resident of the Confederate Soldiers
Home in Atlanta.
