Jonathan Mills
Guardian of JAMES PADGETT
Cumberland County, NJ Wills, 1749

Know all men by these presents that we, Jonathan Mills & Joseph Denn both of the
Township of Stowe in the County of Cumberland, yeaomans, are held firmly bound
unto his Excellency Jonathan Belcher, Esq., Captain General & Governor in Chief
of the Province of New Jersey __ in the sum of one thousand pounds proclamation
money to be paid to the said Jonathan Belcher, his successors or assigns. To
the which payment we bind us, our heirs, executors & administrators jointly &
severally this twelfth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven
hundred & forty nine.
Whereas James Padgett --- an infant of the age of Fourteen years & upwards, son
of Francis Padgett -- Late of the township of Stowe in the County of Cumberland,
deceased, hath by petition to me filed in the (Prerogative?) office at
Burlington, prayed that the above bound Jonathan Mills -- may be appointed
guardian of his person & estates till he attains his age of twenty one years;
the said guardianship not having being disposed of by the will of the said
infants father which will is enregistered in the office aforesaid and I having
thought proper to admit the said Jonathan Mills -- (for the benefit of the said
infant) to be his guardian till he attain his age aforesaid. Now the condition
of the above obligation is such that if the above bound Jonathan Mills -- do &
shall take care of the person & education of the said infant & that according to
his estate & degree & all writings & __________ touching lands that shall come
to his hands or render to him at his full age or to such person or persons as by
law may be entitled to receive the same and a just & true account of the pr_____
or issues & profits of the real & personal estate of the said infant & in the
mean time improve the same for use and benefit to the best advantage & make no
sale nor commit no waste or destruction thereof or therein then the above
obligation shall be void, or else it shall stand in full force.

The petition of James Padgett, son of Francis Padgett late of the township of
Stowe in the County of Cumberland, yeoman, deceased,
Humbly (Serveth?)
That your petitioner's said father did not by any deed in his lifetime or by his
Last Will and Testament at the time of his decease dispose of the guardianship
of your petitioner pursuant to the statute made in the twelfth year of the Reign
of Charles the Second, late king of England __ enabling the father to dispose of
the custody of his child or children till their age of one and twenty years, and
your petitioner being upward of fourteen years of age and under the age of
twenty one years and having some personal estates given to him by the testament
and last will of his said father which stands in need of having some due care
taken thereof and your petitioner having made c_____ of his friend Jonathan
Mills of the township of Stowe above said to be his guardian until your
petitioner shall attain to his full age of twenty one years.
Your petitioners therefore humbly pray that your Excellency will be
pleased to grant unto the said Jonathan Mills the guardianship of your
petitioner & of your petitioner's estate & effects until your petitioner shall
attain his full age of twenty one years and your petitioner as in duty bound
shall ____ pray.
