From "History of Bethel Association Including
Centennial Meeting", by Alexander Lee Miller
PHILIP B. AUTREY and B. F. CLEVELAND
Again the Minutes of the Bethel Association at its session held with Friendship Church,
Sumter County, in 1857, speak not of the birth nor the date of the death, but of the works
of two great men, Philip B. Autrey and B. F. Cleveland, who died during the year 1857.
The words of the Association are as follows:
"During the past associational year, two of our beloved brethren in the ministry have fallen:
Brother Philip B. Autrey and Brother B. F. Cleveland. By the death of these beloved and zealous
brethren, the vineyard of the Lord has been deprived of two faithful laborers; but we bow in
meek submission to this dispensation of providence, knowing that unerring wisdom saw it was best.
We must ever remember that God is more immediately interested in His cause among us than we
possibly can be. This affliction to the Churches cannot, therefore, be considered as a real
hindrance to the success of God's great work on the earth."
The works of men follow them. By their works shall ye know them.
