John HODAN, one of the most respected citizens of this town, died at his
home a mile east of this village, on Friday morning August 16th, 1895, from
blood poisoning.

Mr. HODAN was born in Bohemia, in May 1834. In 1852 he was married to Miss
Rosalie HORSKY, a most estimable lady, who survives him.

In 1872 Mr. HODAN with his wife came to America, the land of promise to so
many in the Old World. They came directly to this town reaching it on the
last day of May of that year. The next day he bought the farm on which he
resided until his death. His selection was a good one, and in a few years
his farm came to be regarded as the model one, and himself as the model
farmer of this community. It followed, as of course, that he prospered
well.

In his intercourse with his neighbors, without being demonstrative, he was
kind, honest and helpful, and so won and held their confidence and esteem
through life, as his death brings sadness and regret.

The funeral was one of the most largely attended ever had in this
community, manifesting how wide was the circle of his friends, reaching
into Lincoln and Richfield as well as the towns of Adams and Preston.

Besides his widow, Mr. HODAN leaves four children--a son, Joseph A. HODAN,
the postmaster in Friendship; and three daughters, Mrs. Mary MACHOVEC of
Mauston, and Barbara and Alice, who reside with their mother in the old
home.

This whole community is pervaded by a sentiment of regretful sorrow for the
loss of a good man and of sympathy for those bereaved by his death.
