A FATAL ACCIDENT--HUMPHREY BURKE DEAD

Prominent Young Man of Springville Accidentally Shot and Killed Sunday
Morning

Last Sunday about 9:30 a.m., as Humphrey BURKE and a party of young men
were preparing to go hunting at the home of Mrs. Sherman COLBURN in the
Town of Springville, a 22-calibre rifle that Fred HELTMAN was loading was
accidentally discharged, the bullet hitting BURKE on the right side just
below the fifth rib. Dr. LISTER of White Creek was immediately summoned but
before his arrival Mr. BURKE had died, having lived only twenty-five
minutes after being hit.

Humphrey BURKE was about twenty-seven years old and had spent the greater
part of his life in and around Plainville. About two years ago he was
married to Miss Ethel VanSLYKE, and one child born of that union, who with
a young widow are left to mourn the loss of a husband and father. Mr. BURKE
also leaves to mourn his sudden demise his mother, Mrs. BURKE of
Plainville, one sister, Mrs. Edith BAUER of Velva, South Dakota, one half
sister, Miss Mary GIRLING of this place, and two brothers, Ezra of
Springville and Albert of Dakota.

Mr. BURKE was an honest, industrious young man. He had many friends and
acquaintances in the southern part of the county, who will learn with
regret of his sudden death. The heartfelt sympathy of the community goes
out to the young wife and his relatives in their time of bereavement.

Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. VANSLYKE on Tuesday at noon,
Reverend ----- of Kilbourn officiating. The interment was in Plainville
cemetery.
