FORMER TYRONE RESIDENT.
Mrs. Mary A. Mattern Died at Her Philipsburg Home.

Mrs. Mary A. Mattern, widow of John W. Mattern, died at her home at
Philipsburg Monday morning, of paralysis. She had been in ill health
for several weeks, the fatal stroke attacking her Sunday night.
The deceased, whose maiden name was Mary A. Miller, was born in
Lewistown on March 20, 1829, making her age 81 years and 29 days. She
was united in marriage at Stormstown on February 22, 1849, to John W.
Mattern, the late Rev. John Pearce performing the ceremony. They
immediately took up housekeeping at Franklinville, where they resided
until their removal to Philipsburg in April 1863. As a result of this
union two children were born, both of whom survive, Mrs. Ermina M.
McKinney, at home and Emory Olin, also of Philipsburg. She also leaves
four sisters, Mrs. Kate McPherran, of Toledo, Iowa, Mrs. Sarah Ameck,
Monticello, Ind., Mrs. Martha Simms, Mill Creek, Pa., and Mrs. Albert
Steinbarger, of Lewistown. Her husband died October 30, 1897. A few
years after his death Mrs. Mattern and her daughter, Mrs. McKinney
became resident of Tyrone but about a year ago they returned to
Philipsburg.
Mrs. Mattern was a woman of the loftiest Christian character and most
womanly graciousness. She was from early girlhood devout in her
adherence to Christian principles, and her husband and herself were
prominent in the activities of the Philipsburg Methodist church. The
funeral took place this afternoon.
