Rev. John H. Lever

At his home in Stormstown, on Thursday, Rev. John H. Lever died of
general break down, and heart weakness. He was born in Philipsburg,
April 29, 1829, making his age at death 82 years, 7 months and 1 day.
On November 18, 1852, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Burket
at Warrior's Mark. To this union were born ten children, seven whom
survive, with their mother, to mourn their loss. They are as follows:
Mrs. J. A. Study, of Tyrone; Mrs. George Wilson, of Portland, Oregon;
Mrs. Frank Guyer, of Johnstown; Mrs. G. M. Baer, of Philadelphia; G.
Burket Lever, of Altoona; Clyde, of Philadelphia, and Mrs. Alice Mong,
at home. Eight grand-children and two great-grandchildren also
survive.
In his youth he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and
for half a century he had been a local preacher, following the steps of
his Master, giving help to those in distress, ministering to sick and
needy, comforting the bereaved. He was known far and wide for his
generous deeds, his hospitality and his kindliness. His daily life was
that of an honest, upright Christian. As a minister, he was
frequently called to fill the pulpits of Methodist churches and to
officiate at funerals. No task was too great and no weather too
inclement to hinder him from proclaiming the Gospel he loved so well or
from speaking the word of comfort to those in sorrow. Had he lived to
complete the term for which he was elected, he would have served
continuously as justice of the peace for fifty years. During the
forty-nine years he did serve, of all the decisions he rendered, those
that were carried to court were in each case affirmed - a record hard
to duplicate. One of the best known citizens of the western part of
Centre county, he was one of the most esteemed.
The funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m., at his late
residence. Rev. R. W. Runyan, a former pastor, will conduct the
service. Interment will be in Gray's cemetery.
