Rev. Nathaniel Reeder has ceased at once to work and live. He was born in
Luzerne co., Pa., in the year 1789 - embraced religion and joined the
Methodist Episcopal church at an early age - was licensed to preach, and
admitted into the traveling connection, in 1813 - traveled four years in
Canada, and a number of years in other parts of the work [sic], with
acceptability and usefulness. His health failing, he took a location, and
removed with his family to Wayne co., Ohio, in the fall of 1835 - procured a
small home in the beach [sic] wood in Canaan township, and went to work.
For two years past, the writer has preached in brother R.'s house (where we
have a small class), and always found it a cheerful home. Brother R.
preached faithfully, in his local sphere, and labored hard, with his own
feeble hands, to support his family, until Friday morning, the 9th inst.,
after a hard day's labor in his harvest field, he was taken severely ill,
with the cholera morbus. For 48 hours, he suffered much; but was patient
and resigned, and expressed a firm confidence in God, exclaiming, "He is
precious - he is precious!" and then fell asleep in the arms of Jesus. He
is gone to meet many of his old friends and spiritual children in the
presence of God. On Sabbath morning, the 12th inst., his remains were
interred at Canaan meeting-house, and a funeral discourse delivered to
weeping hundreds, from Rev., xiv, 13. He has left a wife and ten children
to mourn his loss. May the Lord be their support!
