RECENT DEATHS
JAMES BOTHEL
James BOTHEL, aged 94, one of the most highly respected and useful citizens of 
Center township, passed away Thursday last July 13, of diseases incident to 
old aged. He was born in Washington township October 22 1822 and moved to 
Center township in 1872.  His grandfather, David BOTHEL, settled in what is 
now Indiana county in 1790. John BOTHEL, the father of the deceased was in the 
war of 1812. Mr. BOTHEL was a Civil War veteran, being a member of Co. I. 
135th Regiment, under Captain John A. Kinter and was mustered out May 24, 
1863. He was a staunch Republican and his religious connection were with the 
Crete United Presbyterian church, which he served as trustee. He leaves one 
son, Nelson M. BOTHEL, of Center township, with whom he made his home, and 
where he found a kind and peaceful home during his declining years.
     Mr. BOTHEL was one of the most remarkable men of his time. He could read 
without glasses and was unusually well posted on the European war. He was very 
intelligent and well posted on the happenings in our own country and our 
troubles with Mexico. He was the oldest inhaabitant in Center tosnwhip if not 
in the country.
     On January 12, 1865, Mr. BOTHEL married Mrs. Mary J. CAMPBELL DICKSON, 
who died January 14, 1909, and was buried in Greenwood cemetery.    
     Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon last at 2 o'clock by Rev. 
Logan, pastor of Crete United Presbyterian church. Interment followed in 
Greenwood cemetery at Indiana.
