WILLIAM A. BENCE Indiana lost one of its well known and most respected
citizens early this morning with the death of William Allen Bence. Mr. Bence
's death occurred in the Indiana Hospital Monday at 1:15 a.m. following a
paralytic stroke Saturday evening in his home at 318 South Fifth Street.
William Allen Bence was born May 29, 1872, the son of John D. Bence of Rayne
Township and Lydia Shields Bence. He lived almost his entire life in
Indiana.
During the early years of his life he was engaged in different business
ventures in the borough, having at one time or another owned a restaurant, a
theater, and for several years, in partnership with the late Robert S. McCoy
had a grocery store on Philadelphia Street.
During recent years he was a contract painter, and only during the past year
had retired from this work.
He served as a member of Indiana Borough Council for 8 years and had been an
active and devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church and of the Chapman Bible
Class.
He is survived by his wife, Amber Kinter Bence and several nieces and
nephews. He had one brother S.D. Bence who died in 1949.
Friends will be received after 7:00 p.m. Monday at Robinson's, 36 N. 7th
St., Indiana, where services will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 3rd at 2:00
p.m. by the Rev. Arthur J. Pfohl. Interment, Greenwood cemetery, Indiana.
