MRS. LYDIA S. Bence, AGED 65 YEARS, WIFE OF John D. Bence, of South Sixth
Street, died suddenly at 5 'clock Thursday morning from heart disease. The
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Shields of Rayne Township, she was married
to John D. Bence September 19, 1871, where they made their home in Rayne
Township near Dixonville. They moved to Indiana to their present home on
South Sixth Street in 1912. Besides her husband, she leaves two children:
William at home, S.B. Bence on the homestead in Rayne Township; and also
leaves one brother, A.H. Shields, of Second Street and Mrs. Robert S. McCoy
of East Church Street. She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in
Rayne Township and also a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Indiana at
her death. Funeral services were held at the Bence Home on Saturday morning
at 10:30 o'clock by her pastor, Rev. E.M. Gearhart, pastor of the Zion
Lutheran Church. Interment made in Greenwood Cemetery. (1916)

MRS. LYDIA S. BENCE STRICKEN WITH APOPLEXY AND DIES IMMEDIATELY
The friends of Mrs. Lydia S. Bence of South Fifth Street were shocked to
learn of her sudden death early Thursday morning.
While Mrs. Bence was preparing breakfast shortly after 5 o'clock she fell to
the floor and before assistance could be given her, death occurred.
Mrs. Bence was widow of John D. Bence. She was daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
William Shields, and was born and reared in Rayne Township. On September 19,
1871, she was united in marriage with John Bence and lived for many years in
Rayne Township at Dixonville. She had been living in Indiana for about four
years.
She is survived by two children, William Bence of Indiana and S.B. Bence of
Rayne Township. She also leaves one brother and one sister, A.H. Shields of
South Second Street, Indiana and Mrs. R.S. McCoy of East Church Street,
Indiana.
The funeral services were held at the Bence home on Saturday morning.
Interment was in Greenwood cemetery. (August 9, 1916)
