Wm. L. Batipps, Media Minister, Dies; Was 88
It was 74 years ago that a poor uneducated boy from the
South came to Media. There he found kindness, was given
a job and a chance to get an education.
Today, at the age of 88, Rev. WILLIAM L. BATIPPS died
in his adopted community, respected and loved, leaving
numerous progeny to carry on his good work.
Born in Chelsea, King William County, Va., the retired
pastor had come to Delaware County as a lad and had been
educated by the HALDEMAN family. Proving a capable chef,
he became head cook at the old Shortledge Academy, at
Front and Monroe streets, and more recently had been cook
for the Andrew EASTWICK family, in Wallingford. For a
number of years he worked for C. Frank WILLIAMSON.
But aside from his daily job, WILLIAM BATIPPS believed in
the things of the spirit, and entered the ministry. Six years
ago, he retired from the active ministry of the UAME Church,
where he served in the Pennsylvania-Delaware-Maryland
Conference, but continued to act as assistant pastor of the
Lima UAME Church. His last active charge had been at
Old Fort Church in Christiana, Del. He held membership in
Mt. Zion Lodge, F & AM.
A widower he lived with his daughter, Mrs. BERTHA
JOHNSON, of 436 Lieper street. He is survived by five
children, all of whom live in Media: MRS. MARY JANE
SAUNDERS, MRS. GEORGEANNA BROOKS, DR. PERCY
O. BATIPPS, SAMUEL BATIPPS and THOMAS F. BATIPPS,
a Media undertaker.
Also surviving are 45 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren
and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for the Rev. Mr. BATIPPS will be held on
Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock from the Lima UAME
Church, with interment in the Lima Cemetery. Friends may
call at his residence on Tuesday evening.
Note: Husband of Margaret Batipps
