JAMES OSCAR BERGANTZ
Huntingdon, Pa.

County Commissioner: Dating back many years, has the name of Bergantz been
associated with the interests of Huntingdon County, formerly tillers of the
soil. But this sketch has to do primarily with James Oscar Bergantz, one of
our present County Commissioners, who took office on January 1, 1928. Mr.
Bergantz was born at Union Church, Huntingdon County, Pa., on June 1, 1882, and
at the Union School House, Henderson Township, was his first acquaintance with
the rudiments of an early education. A son of J. L. and Lettie M. Bergantz,
who now reside at 1218 Mifflin Street, Huntingdon, Pa., of American birth.
James O. Bergantz taught school for three terms, in Henderson, Oneida and
Smithfield townships. In 1902 he graduated at Juniata College, Huntingdon, Pa.
From May, 1903, to 1917, was with the Bayer-Beaver Company, as their
representative; later on engaged in the mercantile business, and has been very
successful. He is a member of the St. James Lutheran Church of Huntingdon, and
of its Council; is treasurer and teacher in Sunday School. Is financial
secretary P.O.S. of A., very much a Democrat. Brothers are E. Lloyd and L. A.
Bergantz; Allen C. and George E. are deceased; sisters are Mrs. H. C. Ranck,
Mrs. David Veit, Mrs. John Kyper, Mrs. Wallace Blair and Miss Louise Bergantz.
He was married February 11, 1909, to May I. Swope, in Trough Creek Valley. Two
sons, Walter S., aged sixteen years, and Robert L., thirteen years, both attend
school. Mr. Bergantz has always lived an honorable, upright life, and one who
is interested in the welfare of the public.
