OBITUARIES:
James Lee Blackmon
(ROANOKE) The funeral service for James Lee Blackmon, 88, of Roanoke was
Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at 1 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the
Revs. David Holmes, Bobby Kirby and Lavon DeLee officiating. Burial followed
at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, LaFayette.
Mr. Blackmon died Thursday, Feb. 26, at his residence.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Sept. 11, 1909, son of
Walter and Julie Knight Blackmon. He had been employed with West Point
Pepperell. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Henderson Blackmon.
Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Denham of Roanoke, Faye Glass of
LaFayette and Pauline Patton of Albany, Ga.; two sons, Ralph Blackmon of
Conyers, Ga., and Oscar Blackmon of Rock Mills; 28 grandchildren, 52 great-
grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons.

Bunyan Goodwin Sr.
(WEDOWEE) Bunyan Goodwin Sr., 52, of Wedowee died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998,
at Columbia Dunwoody Medical Center, Atlanta.
Mr. Goodwin was a brick mason. He was employed with Pyramid Masonry of
Decatur, Ga.
Survivors include two daughters, Rachel Goodwin of Roanoke and Mary Alice
Goodwin of Wedowee; a son, Bunyan Goodwin Jr. of Roanoke; a sister, Catherine
Spidell of Wedowee; two brothers, Billy Fred Goodwin of Newell and Richard
Goodwin of Dayton, Ohio.
Services for Mr. Goodwin will be Wednesday, March 4, at 2 p.m. at the chapel
of Silmon Mortuary, with the Rev. Curtis Spidell officiating. Interment will
be in Union Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Silmon Mortuary of Roanoke is in charge of arrangements.

Warner W. 'Bill' Bassett
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Warner W. "Bill" Bassett, 84, of Roanoke will
be Wednesday, March 4, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in
Roanoke, with the Rev. Tim Craft and Mr. Thomas Waldrep officiating. Burial
will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Bassett died Monday, March 2, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born May 18, 1913, son of
Charlie and Leona V. Bassett. He was a World War II veteran and a member of
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He had been employed as a carpenter with
Stevens Workshop.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jim Reaves Bassett of Roanoke; two daughter
[s], Judy Cunningham of Forrester Park, Ga., and Denise Varnadoe of Hampton,
Ga.; one son, Ernie Bassett of Luthersville, Ga.; four sisters, Lorene
Schuessler of Dennison, Texas, Irene Kirby and Viola Thomas of Lakeland, Fla.,
and Mary Baldwin of Birmingham; two brothers, Travis "Pete" Bassett of
Lakeland, Fla., and Gordon Bassett of Doraville, Ga.; seven grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Bassett will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 1 p.m.
Wednesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church
Building Fund, 3085 County Road 26, Roanoke, AL 36274.
Pallbearers will be Mark Cunningham, Jacob Varnadoe, Joshua Varnadoe, Doug
Brown, Dempsey Roberts and Jimmy Jones.

Ora Pearl Price
(STANDING ROCK) Funeral services for Ora Pearl Price, 66, of Standing Rock
were at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 2, 1998, at Standing Rock Assembly of God, with
the Rev. A. W. Kent and the Rev. Carroll Royster officiating. Burial was at
Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Price died Friday, Feb. 27, at George Lanier Memorial Hospital in
Valley following a long period of declining health.
She was born Sept. 22, 1931, in Randolph County, daughter of William Ellis
and Fannie Liza Harmon. She was a member of Standing Rock Assembly of God
Church. She was preceded in death by a husband, Arlon Bolt, and by a
grandchild, Zachary Fomby.
Survivors include her husband, J. W. Price of Standing Rock; four daughters,
Nelda Myers of Valley, Sue Farmer of Roanoke, Gloria "Cissy" Boatner of Rock
Mills and Kim Fomby of Hogansville, Ga.; one son, Jimmy Price of Standing Rock;
two sisters, Bertha Holloway of Lineville and Fannie Dell Traylor of Woodland;
two brothers, I. D. Harmon of Swagg and James A. Harmon of Bacon Level; nine
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Bobby Henderson, Owen Harmon, Bennie Lee Harmon, Junior
Traylor, Sanford Holloway and Carson Harmon.

Darryl Keith Houze
(ATLANTA) Darryl Keith Houze, 38, of Atlanta, formerly of Roanoke, died
Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at Piedmont Hospital.
Funeral services were Sunday, March 1, at 2 p.m. at Rock Mills United
Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Holmes officiating. Burial was at
Randolph Memory Gardens.
A Randolph County native, Mr. Houze was born Jan. 9, 1960, son of Larry and
Betty Crockett Houze. He was a graduate of Handley High School and Auburn
University and was a member of Center Baptist Church in LaFayette. He was
employed with Addler Instrument as an office manager.
Survivors include his parents, Larry and Betty Houze of Roanoke; his
grandmother, Laura E. Crockett of LaGrange, Ga.; one sister, Laura Allen of
Auburn; and a close friend, Darryl Moores of Atlanta.
Pallbearers were Sean Moores, Damian Friessman, Ben Crockett, Joey Crockett,
Roger Arnett and Skip Kelley.

Robert L. 'Bob' Brown
(WEDOWEE) The funeral service for Robert L. "Bob" Brown Sr., 97, of Wedowee
was Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at 3 p.m. at Levens Baptist Church, with the Rev.
Gordon Taylor and the Rev. Tim Brown officiating. Burial was in the adjoining
cemetery.
Mr. Brown died Sunday, March 1, at his residence following an extended
illness.
Survivors include three daughters, Mavis Calhoun of Wedowee, Vera Luker of
Lineville and Ann Wilson of Opelika; four sons, Willie Brown of LaGrange, Ga.,
Cecil Brown of Woodland and Robert Brown Jr. and Vernon Brown of Wedowee; 20
grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and one
sister, Mary Lou Smith of Newell.
Mr. Brown was a native of Chambers County, born Aug. 22, 1900, son of Dozier
Brown and Cynthia Fincher Brown. He was a farmer and member of Levens Baptist
Church, which he had served as a deacon for a number of years. He was preceded
in death by his wife, Annie Bolt Brown, a daughter, Lorene Burkes, and a son,
Lowell Brown.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Billie Faye Gibson
(ASHLAND) Funeral services for Billie Faye Gibson, 69, of Ashland were
Sunday, March 1, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in
Lineville with the Rev. Andrew Butler and the Rev. Randall Ingram officiating.
Burial was in Clay County Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Gibson died Friday, Feb. 27, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
Mrs. Gibson was a native of Clay County and a former resident of Villa Rica,
Ga. She was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, and was retired
from Higgins Manufacturing Company.
She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Jaffries Ogles of Ashland, and a host of
nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Dr. C. Alan Ogles, Jeremy Jones, Ricky Short, John Moore,
Frank Sims, Benny Worthy, Burt Hood, Mike Patterson and Gerald Short. Honorary
pallbearers were Olin Hurst, Charles Minter, Floyd Watts, Jim Short, Aubrey
Patterson, Bill Ragon, Robert Terrell Short and Johnny Short.

Raymond McCormick
(WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Raymond McCormick, 64, of Wedowee were
Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at 3 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. J.
C. Holloway officiating. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery.
Mr. McCormick died Monday, March 2, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke
following an extended illness.
Mr. McCormick is survived by two sisters, Georgia Davis of Wedowee and Mary
Jo Edmondson of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Josh McCormick of Wedowee, and
several nieces and nephews.
Mr. McCormick was a native of Randolph County, born Aug. 28, 1933, son of
Noah McCormick and Minnie Edwards McCormick. He had worked in the poultry
industry and was an [sic] member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.
Nephews served as pallbearers.

George Glavis Johnson
(ROANOKE) The funeral service for George Glavis Johnson, 66, of Roanoke was
at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at White's Chapel United Methodist Church,
with the Rev. Don Quick officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Johnson died Sunday, March 1, at Hospice of LaGrange.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born June 11, 1931, son of
George and Vollie Johnson. He was a veteran of the Korean War, a member of
White's Chapel United Methodist Church and had been self-employed as a
carpenter.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Vollie Johnson of Roanoke.
Pallbearers will be Jackie Hill, William Hill, Harmon Kirby, Bo Cobb, Wayne
Taylor and Chris Johnson.

Guy Louis Robertson
(JACKSONVILLE) Guy Louis Robertson, 92, of Jacksonville, formerly of
Wedowee, died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at Jacksonville Hospital, Jacksonville.
Survivors include a son, Abraham Lincoln Robertson of Wedowee; two
daughters, Naomi Grier of Anniston and Louise Longshore of Dover, Del.; a
brother, James Robertson of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Geneva Sims of
Anniston and Vera Molden of Wedowee; 10 grandchildren; nine great-
grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services for Mr. Robertson were Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. at Canaan
Missionary Baptist Church, Wedowee, with the Revs. Jerome Trammell, Otis
Wilson, Robert Trammell and A. J. Sims officiating. Interment was in the
adjoining church cemetery.

William Joe Smith
(ROANOKE) William Joe Smith, 80, of Roanoke died Friday, March 6, 1998, at
East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika after a short illness.
Funeral services were Monday, March 9, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral
Chapel, with the Revs. S. T. Janney and Jody Overton officiating. Burial was
in Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery.
A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mr. Smith was born April 2, 1917, son
of Carlos and Hattie Smith, he was a member of Beulah Baptist Church and had
retired from Milliken Mills, LaGrange, Ga. He was preceded in death by his
first wife, Mary J. Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Clara Smith of Tallassee; one daughter, Mary Ann
Herren of Woodland; one son, Thomas Smith of Roanoke; one step-daughter, Pat
Rodgers of Tallassee; one step-son, Elgin Wright of Cartersville, Ga.; 12
grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; five step-
grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Alma Lou Daniel Hilliard
(ROANOKE) Alma Lou Daniel Hilliard, 88, of Roanoke died suddenly Thursday,
March 5, 1998, at Randolph County Hospital.
The funeral service was Saturday, March 7, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum
Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tim Teague officiating. Burial followed at Center
Chapel Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Sybil Kitchens of Roanoke; two sisters,
Gloria Rogers of Carrollton, Ga., and Josie Reynolds of Ephesus, Ga.; one
brother, Perry Henson of LaGrange, Ga.; three grandchildren; eight great-
grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hilliard was an Alabama native, born June 12, 1909, daughter of C. D.
and Mary Ola Duffey Henson. She was a member of First Church of God and
retired from Handley Mills. Mrs. Hilliard was preceded in death by two
husbands, Frank Daniel and Harry Hilliard.
Pallbearers were Carey Bennett, Stanley Stanford, Barrett Shelnutt, Chris
Allen, Stacy Heard and Ronnie Harper.

(ROANOKE) Melvin R. Battle, 51, of Roanoke died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at
Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
Funeral services were Sunday, March 8, at 2 p.m. at County Line Baptist
Church, Wadley, with the Rev. Sanford Johnson officiating. Burial was in the
adjoining cemetery.
Survivors include his parents, Leonard and Katie Battle of Wadley; his wife
Mary Jane Battle of Roanoke; a daughter, Sandra Jean Parker of Roanoke; two
sons, Melvin Battle Jr. and Willie Moon Battle of Roanoke; four brothers,
Willie James Battle, Vernon Battle and Hershell Battle of Wadley and Robert
Lewis Battle of Roanoke; a sister, Jean Battle of Wadley; and four
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, L. J. Battle and
Willie Rufus Battle, and a sister, Mid Lee Presley.

Thomas Edward Hendley
(ROANOKE) Thomas Edward "Tommy" Hendley, 25, of Roanoke died Tuesday, March
3, 1998, at Wedowee Hospital.
Funeral services were Thursday, March 5, at 1 p.m. at Springfield Baptist
Church, with the Revs. Lindon Fields, Cecil Halsey and Len Martin officiating.
Burial was at Napoleon Church of Christ Cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Dylan Hendley; one daughter, Brittany Hendley;
one step-daughter, Paige Pollard; his mother and step-father, Deborah and
Mickey Young of Roanoke; grandmothers Clayton Davis of Rock Mills and Sara
Hendley of Roanoke; five aunts and five uncles.
A Randolph County native and lifelong resident, he was born Feb. 22, 1973.
He was a member of Springfield Baptist Church.
Pallbearers were Brian Sellers, James Kimble, Jamie Young, Jeff Young, Timmy
Pollard, Greg Stephens, Freddy Boggs and Eddy Akin.

Mae Dell Askew
(DETROIT, Mich.) Mae Dell Askew, 77, of Detroit, Mich., died Wednesday,
March 4, 1998, at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Mich.
Funeral services were at Sardis Baptist Church in Camp Hill on Tuesday,
March 10, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. C. W. Fielder, pastor, officiating.
Interment was at New Zion Cemetery in Lanett.
Mrs. Askew was born June 30, 1920, in Chambers County to Emmitt Whitlow and
Effie Askew Whitlow. She was educated in Chambers County and Birmingham. Mrs.
Askew was a member of Sardis Baptist Church. Her late husband, the Rev. T. J.
Askew pastored many churches in area, including 23 years at First Baptist
Church in Roanoke. After illness forced her husband to retire, the couple
moved to Detroit, where Mrs. Askew was associated with Spring Hill Missionary
Baptist Church. She served in various positions throughout the Bowen District,
including president of the Ministers' Wives, member of the Missionary Society
at Sardis Baptist Church, counselor for the Baptist Training Union and a
delegate to the Alabama and National Baptist Conventions.
Survivors include one daughter, Lavera Frederick of Detroit; two sisters,
Mattie M. Kimble of Detroit and Wyvonnia Williams of Huntsville, Texas; three
brothers, F. L. Whitlow and James Askew of Detroit and B. F. Whitlow of
Birmingham; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of
nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.

OBITUARIES:
James Conner Owens Jr.
(BAY MINETTE) James Connor Owens, Jr., 74, a native of Roanoke and a
resident of Bay Minette, died Friday, March 13, 1998, at Oakwood Nursing Home.
Mr. Owens was a trial attorney and practiced law for 46 years. He was a
World War II U.S. Army veteran and holder of the Purple Heart and Silver Star.
He was an organizer of First National Bank of Bay Minette, now Regions Bank,
and served on the board of directors. He was an organizer and past president
of Holly Hills Country Club; past president of the Baldwin County Bar
Association; a member of First United Methodist Church and Sunday school
teacher of the Men's Bible Class for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Baskin Owens of Bay Minette; one son, James
Connor Owens III of Fairhope; three daughters, Margaret Owens Simpson and
Elizabeth Owens Frost of Mobile and Leila Owens Morris of Bay Minette, and
Elizabeth Owens Frost of Mobile; his mother, Margaret Schuessler Owens of
Roanoke; one sister, Leila Owens Green of Anderson, S.C.; and five
grandchildren.
Funeral services were Monday, March 16, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist
Church, with the Rev. George Sedberry, the Rev. D. K. Christenberry and the
Rev. Teresa B. Leifur officiating. Burial was in Pine Crest Cemetery, Mobile.
Pallbearers were Al Thompson, Jim Robertson, John Earle Chason, Ron Shaddix,
Mike Andrioli and Hamilton Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Wayland Woodson,
Albert Thompson, Milton Wilson and the Men's Bible Class of First United
Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made
to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 338, Bay Minette, AL 36507 or
Immanuel Episcopal Church - ECW, 700 McMillan Ave., Bay Minette, AL 36507.

Addis Ray Smith
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Addie Ray Smith, 63, of Roanoke were at 2
p.m. Thursday, March 12, 1998, from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev.
Tim Teague officiating. Burial followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mr. Smith died Tuesday, March 10, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in
Tuskegee.
He was a lifelong Randolph County resident, born Jan. 14, 1935, son of Allen
Edward and Sara Leslie Smith. He was a Korean War Veteran and had been
employed in the food service industry.
Survivors include one daughter, Sandra K. Stewart, a sister and brother-in-
law, Gladys Faye and John W. Waldrep all of Roanoke; two grandchildren, 3 great-
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Ruby Daniel 'Dude' Burdette
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Ruby Daniel "Dude" Burdette, 80, of LaGrange, Ga., died
Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, after
several months of declining health.
Mr. Burdette was born in Rock Mills, Ala., Nov. 20, 1917, son of the Rev.
Daniel Jackson and Ruby Janie Laws Burdette. He was retired from Propane Gas
Service Inc. and had lived in LaGrange most of his life. He was a member and
deacon of Hilyer Baptist Church and a member of Elm City Lodge #544 F&AM.
Funeral services were at Hilyer Baptist Church, LaGrange, on Friday, March
13, at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Tim Twiley and the Rev. Jay Knight officiating.
Interment was in White's Chapel Cemetery, Roanoke.
Survivors are his wife, Liza Burdette of LaGrange; one daughter, Daphney
Knight of Lanett; two sons Rufus Gentry Burdette of Pine Mountain, GA, and
Eston Burdette of Conyers, Ga.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

William Edward 'Dub' Taylor
(ROANOKE) William Edward "Dub" Taylor, 65, of Roanoke died Friday, March 13,
1998, at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 17, at 2 p.m. at Wehadkee Missionary
Baptist Church, with Bishop C. L. Wilkes officiating.
Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Houston of Mableton, Ga., and Essie
R. Birmingham of Franklin, Ga.; one son, Bobby Taylor of Mableton; three
brothers, Rev. Jimmy Taylor, John Taylor and Clifford Taylor of Dayton, Ohio;
three sisters, Gladys Felton of Homestead, Fla., and Irene Ford and Willie Ruth
Ford of Dayton; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Essie Lee Taylor; his
wife, Ruby Carolyn Taylor; and a son, William Taylor Jr.

Dura Holloway Lane
(ROANOKE) Dura Holloway Lane, 83, of Roanoke died Monday, March 16, 1998, at
her home after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 17, at 4 p.m. at Lane's Chapel
Methodist Church, with the Revs. Lavelle Reynolds and Len Martin officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
A Wedowee native, Mrs. Lane was born Feb. 7, 1915, daughter of Plesant
Walter and Myrtle Etta Bailey Holloway. She was a homemaker and a member of
Lane's Chapel Methodist Church. Mrs. Lane was preceded in death by her
husband, J. L. Larkin Lane, and two sons, Howard Lane and Hershel Lane.
Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Lane McFarland of Austell, Ga.;
three sisters, Mae White and Cordell Adamson of Wedowee and Retha Daniel of
Roanoke; four brothers, Esul Holloway, Doyle Holloway and Onward Holloway, all
of Wedowee and J. D. Holloway of Bowdon, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

E. W. Knight Jr.
(ROANOKE) E. W. Knight, Jr., 79, of Roanoke died March 13, 1998, at Randolph
County Hospital after an extended illness.
Funeral services were Sunday, March 15, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral
Chapel, with the Revs. Benny Hand Sr., Herbert (Bud) Howard and Bobby Kirby
officiating. Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery.
A Randolph County native, Mr. Knight was born Feb. 1, 1919, son of Edward
Wilts Knight Sr. and Ruby Melinda Dunson Knight. He had retired from work as a
self-employed cab driver.
Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Neely Knight of Roanoke; three daughter

(WEDOWEE) George W. "Washie" Stephens, 84, of Wedowee died Saturday, March
14, 1998.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 21, at 1 p.m. at Zion Rest Baptist
Church, Wedowee, with the Rev. Robert Mallory and the Rev. William Phillips
officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Johnnie Mae Stenson of Cocoa, Fla., and
Hattie Wynn of Atlanta, Ga.; one son, Willie Lee Kilpatrick of Atlanta; a
brother, J. C. Holloway of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Exla Phillips of
Cleveland, Ala., and Judy Pearl Alexander of Cleveland, Ohio; 32 grandchildren;
and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Cora Holloway; his wife, Hattie Mae
Stephens; and three sons, Samuel Kilpatrick, Jesse Kilpatrick and Lonzell
Kilpatrick.
Visitation will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke, on Friday,
March 20, after 10 a.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home
from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday. The body will be placed in church one hour
before services.

OBITUARIES:
Ida Bell Armstrong
(ROANOKE) Ida Bell Armstrong, 76, of Roanoke died Friday, March 20, 1998, at
Randolph County Hospital.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 24, at 1 p.m. at Handley Avenue Church
of God, with the Rev. Gary Baugh officiating. Burial was at Lanett City
Cemetery.
A Randolph County native, Mrs. Armstrong was born May 30, 1921, daughter of
William Alec and Mattie Lou Rowe Mitchum. She had been a resident of Florida
for 25 years before returning to Randolph County 11 years ago. Mrs. Armstrong
was a homemaker and a member of Handley Avenue Church of God. She was preceded
in death by a daughter, Janice Oline Smith.
Survivors include her husband, William Olin Armstrong of Roanoke; one
daughter, Mattie Joyce Copestick of Roanoke; five sons, William Earnest
Armstrong of Spokane, Wash., Benjamin Olin Armstrong of Stark, Fla., Richard
David Armstrong of Jacksonville, Fla., Christopher Roland Armstrong of Roanoke
and Robert Dennis Armstrong of Wadley; one brother, Earnest Mitchum of Lanett;
a special nephew, Rodney Mitchum of Riverdale, Ga.; and a host of grandchildren
and great-grandchildren.
Sons and grandsons served as pallbearers.

Vera Knight Vickers
(WADLEY) Vera Knight Vickers, 91, of Wadley died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at
Lineville Nursing Facility.
Funeral services were Monday, March 23, at 2 p.m. at Corinth Congregational
Christian Church, with the Revs. Gordon Taylor and Richie Farrow officiating.
Burial was in the Forrester's Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.
A Randolph County native, Mrs. Vickers was born Nov. 21, 1906, daughter of
Wyatt Walter and Camilla Gray Vickers. She was a homemaker and a member of
Corinth Congregational Christian Church. Her husband, Henry Vickers, preceded
her in death.
Survivors include two nieces, Marjorie Alexander and Rebecca Caldwell, both
of Wadley; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Pallbearers were Brian Caldwell, Bob Jones, Bill Dye, Ronnie Hester, Paul
Hester, Grover Alexander and Joey Knight.
Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Charles Frederick 'Fred' Knight
(CHARLESTON, S.C.) Charles Frederick "Fred" Knight, 77, of Charleston, S.C.,
died March 17, 1998, at his residence.
Memorial services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 21, in St. Mark United
Methodist Church. Burial was private.
Mr. Knight was born Oct. 31, 1920, in Rock Mills, Ala., son of Dewell Duke
Knight and Sarah Frances Keeble Knight. He was a member of St. Mark United
Methodist Church and was retired after working for a number of years for Tom's
Snack Company and then for the commissioners of public works in Charleston. He
served in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in Italy and northern Africa during
World War II.
He is survived by two sons, Larry J. Knight of Fletcher, N.C., and Jerry E.
Knight of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; one sister, Frances K. Burch of Brunswick, Ga.,
and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth
Watson Knight.

(AUBURN) Funeral services for Annie Blanche Barber, 70, of Auburn were
Friday, March 20, 1998, at 1 p.m. at Frederick's Funeral Home in Opelika.
Evangelist Tom Sutherland, Raymond Harris and David Morris officiated.
Interment was in Garden Hills Cemetery.
Mrs. Barber, who died Tuesday, March 17, at East Alabama Medical Center, was
born Jan. 3, 1928, in Clanton, daughter of the late Samuel and Rosie Rhodes.
She was a member of Notasulga Church of Christ.
She is survived by her husband, Curtis H. Barber of Wadley; four daughters,
Carol Dickerson and Gloria Detmer of Auburn, Gladys Arunachalam of Petaluma,
Calif., and Toni Herd of Opelika; one sons, Allen Barber of Wadley; two
sisters, Pauline Hall of Troy and Faye McCullough of Plantersville; three
brothers, Bill Rhodes of Sylacauga, Jean Rhodes of Prattville, and Carl Rhodes
of Portsmouth, Va.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Arrangements were by Frederick's Funeral Home, Opelika.

Eva Rosa Arrington
(WOODLAND) Funeral services for Eva Rosa Arrington, 88, of Woodland, will be
held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at Liberty East Baptist Church in
Woodland, with Revs. Doris Williamson and Cecil Halsey officiating. Burial
will following [in] the church cemetery.
Mrs. Arrington died Monday, March 23, at Roanoke Health Care following an
extended illness.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Nov. 27, 1909, daughter
of John and Hattie Mae Edmondson. She was retired from Callaway Mills and was
a member of Liberty East Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Talmadge Arrington and one son, Theron Arrington.
Survivors include four daughter[s], Mrs. Ray Rampy of Bremen, Ga., Doris
Traylor and Mrs. Monty Cantrell, both of Woodland, and Mrs. Wilma Moncus of
Opelika; one son, Bruce Arrington of Woodland; five sisters, Pallie Noles of
LaGrange, Clara Floyd of Oxford, Ora Lee Tomlin of Savannah, Ga., Betty Shaw of
Woodland, and Pauline Clark of Huguley; two brothers, Grover Edmondson of
LaGrange, and Clarence Edmondson of East Point, Ga.; 15 grandchildren and 14
great-grandchildren.
The body will lie in state at the church beginning at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
Pallbearers will be Joey Arrington, Chris Rampy, Bob Stapler, Rusty
Arrington, Kenny Arrington, Scotty Arrington, Timmy Arrington, Gene Arrington,
Andrew Cantrell and Bill Caypless.
