OBITUARIES:
Vivian Hodnett
(ROANOKE) Services for Vivian Hodnett, 77, of Roanoke were Friday, Sept. 28,
2007, at 2 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church with the Revs. Chuck Daniel, Scott
Whaley, Otis Hodnett, Buddy Hayes and Carl Partain officiating. Burial followed
in Randolph Memory Gardens with the Revs. Tommy Gene Young and Larry Beach
officiating.
Mrs. Hodnett died Wednesday, Sept. 26, at her home.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Otis Hodnett of Roanoke; three
daughters, Vickie Whaley of Roanoke, Jo Daniel of Douglasville, Ga., and Jan
Howard of Millerville; one son, Ron Hodnett of Hickory, N.C.; two sisters,
Janie Joyner and Melba Bryant of Trenton, Ga.; two brothers, Marvin Bradford of
Ringgold, Ga., and Wes Sonny Bradford of Rising Fawn, Ga.; 11 grandchildren;
18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Shannon Hampton, Stevie Head, Robbie Hodge, Jeff Hodnett,
Ben Whaley and Scott Woodfin.
Mrs. Hodnett was born Dec. 24, 1929, daughter of Floyd A. and Thelma Massey
Bradford. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church and a homemaker. Mrs.
Hodnett was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Tootsie Logan; and
one great-granddaughter, Taylor Daniel.

Rose Marie Hartzel
(ROANOKE) Services for Rose Marie Hartzel, 63, of Roanoke will be Thursday,
Oct. 4, 2007, at 10 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Bobby
Burroughs officiating. Burial will follow in Randolph Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 pm. on
Wednesday.
Mrs. Hartzel died Thursday, Sept. 27, at Randolph Medical Center.
Survivors include one daughter, Theresa Wadman of Roanoke; two sons, Tom
Hartzel of Sanford, N.C., and Jon DeNiro of Corpus Christi, Texas: one sister,
Katherine Walker of Bangor, Maine; and six grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
Mrs. Hartzel was born Nov. 21, 1943, daughter of Glendell and Louise
Fitzgerald. She was of the Christian faith and worked as a textile weaver for
Mohawk Industries. Mrs. Hartzel was preceded in death by her parents.

Linda Frances Eason Traylor
(WEDOWEE) Services for Linda Frances Eason Traylor, 64, of Wedowee will be
Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the
Rev. Harris Hand officiating. Burial will follow in Leven's Baptist Church
Cemetery.
Mrs. Traylor died Sunday, Sept. 30, at Wedowee Hospital.
Mrs. Traylor is survived by her husband, Bill Traylor of Wedowee; three
daughters, Tammy Coleman of Birmingham, Pam Johnson of Wedowee and Tricia
McDaniel of Gastonia, N.C.; one son, Pat Traylor of Heflin; seven
grandchildren; her mother, Daisey Eason of Wedowee; three sisters, Pegy Nelson
of Birmingham and Robbie Benefield and Terri Eason of Wedowee; one brother
Robert Eason Jr. of Wedowee; two brothers-in-law; several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Traylor was born Sept. 3, 1943, the daughter of Robert and Daisy Heard
Eason Sr. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
Mrs. Traylor was preceded in death by her father, Robert Eason Sr.

Thomas Edward Connell
(ANNISTON) Services for Thomas Edward Connell, 82, of Anniston, will be
Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, at 11 a.m. at K.L. Brown Memory Chapel with Dr. Roland
Brown and the Rev. Jim Simpson officiating and interment following at
Forestlawn Gardens.
Mr. Connell died Sept. 28 at his residence.
Mr. Connell was a World War II Naval veteran, participating in numerous
campaigns in the South Pacific. Mr. Connell was a longtime business owner in
Anniston, a 45-year member of the Anniston Civilian Club, a member of the Cheap
Vintage Auto Club and a deacon of Golden Springs Baptist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Martha Connell of Anniston;
one son Nathan Connell of Anniston; one granddaughter; two grandsons; and one
brother, Everett Connell of Wedowee.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Lula Mae Beck, and two brothers,
Clarence Connell and James Connell.
Pallbearers will be Bill Phillips, James Whatley, J.B. Freeman, James Cobb,
Rudy Irwin, Leland Styles, Eddie Long and Dennis Connell. Honorary pallbearers
will be members of the Golden Springs Baptist Men's Fellowship Sunday School
Class.
Flowers will be accepted; however, the family requests donations be made to
Wiregrass Hospice, 1825 Day St., Oxford, AL 36203.

Margaret Ann Goodwin
(LINEVILLE) A memorial service for Margaret Ann Goodwin, 71, of Lineville
will be Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at 1 p.m. EDT at Cross Roads Baptist Church in
Newnan, Ga.
Mrs. Goodwin died Sunday, Sept. 30, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
She was a native of Carrollton, Ga., a former resident of East Point, Ga.,
but had lived in Randolph County since 1995. She had worked for several years
with Accessory Distributing as their bookkeeper and had attended Cliftondale
Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Victor Goodwin of Buford, Ga., and Mark Goodwin
of Newnan; one daughter, Peni Durham of Cleveland, Ga.; one sister-in-law; and
four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Goodwin.

Bobby Jean Thrift
(TALLASSEE) Graveside services for Bobby Jean Thrift, 68, of Tallassee were
Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, at 2 p.m. in Garden Hills.
Mr. Thrift, who died Wednesday, Sept. 26, at East Alabama Medical Center in
Opelika, was born July 31, 1939, in Cusseta. He was a long-time resident of
Opelika and had lived in Tallassee for the past 18 years. He was retired from
the U.S. Army with 32 years of service. Mr. Thrift was employed by the City of
Roanoke and also the City of Opelika for 12 years as master carpenter and
superintendent of maintenance. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of
Lee Lodge 454 and the Eastern Star. Mr. Thrift was also a Shriner. He touched
many lives and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Swanee Sanford Thrift of Tallassee;
three daughters; Cindy Sullivan and Elizabeth Thrift Sullivan, both of
Tallassee, and Bobbie Jean Whittington of Lanett; one son, Robert Thrift of
Port Huenme, Calif.; a sister, Annie Fay Hamm of Opelika; three brothers,
Thomas Wesley Thrift of Cusseta, Merice Clifton Thrift of LaFayette and Andrew
C. Thrift of Opelika; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several
nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Shriners Children's Burn
Hospital, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607.

Robert Lee Fausett
(HELENA) Robert Lee Fausett, 90, of Helena, formerly of Birmingham, died
Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007.
Mr. Fausett was born in Carrollton, Ga., grew up in Roanoke, and graduated
from Handley High School. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served in
Honolulu, Hawaii, for 3-1/2 years. He graduated from Howard College, now
Samford University, in 1954. In 1980, he retired from U.S. Steel after working
for 39 years. He was a member of the Hoover Masonic Lodge, where he served as
worshipful master and secretary. He was active for 50 years in Hunter Street
Baptist Church, where he served on the board of deacons, was a Sunday school
teacher and a training union director. For the last two years, he was a member
of Helena First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel
Casper Fausett and Josephine Pace Carlisle; and sisters, Sarah Vann and Sammie
Higgins.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Wyllene Murphree Fausett; a son,
Robert A. Fausett of Eastaboga; a daughter, Charlotte McGreaham of Roswell,
Ga.; a granddaughter; and a sister, Martha King of Round Rock, Texas.
Services were Sunday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. at Elmwood Chapel with burial in
Elmwood Cemetery. Dr. J.D. Davis and the Rev. Chris Sullivan officiating.

Janice Nell White
(BOWDON, Ga.) Janice Nell White, 47, Bowdon, Ga., died Sunday, Sept. 23,
2007, in Ragland.
She was born in Carroll County Georgia, May 17, 1960, the daughter of the
late Curtis Gerald and Bobbie Nell Kiker White. She was a member of Bethlehem
Campground Methodist Church in Graham and was retired from Ball Corporation.
Survivors include a brother Lanis and wife, Polly, White of Ragland; two
nieces, Amanda and Emily White of Ragland; and several aunts, uncles and
cousins.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. CDT at Old Hopewell
Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Ledbetter, the Rev. Billy York and the Rev.
Doug Ford officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Richard White, Chris Kiker, Steve Ford, John Mark Ford,
Michael Gore and Tony Waddell. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Brown and
Randall White.

Hazel Lee Payton
(WADLEY) Hazel Lee Payton, 65, of Wadley died Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, at
Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
Mrs. Payton is survived by two sons, Mitchell Keith Scogin of Douglasville,
Ga., and Harold E. Scottin Jr. of Washington; two brothers, Clyde Payton of
Florida and James Payton of Birmingham; and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Payton was born Nov 30, 1941, daughter of Hosey and Nellie Caton
Payton. She was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker.

James D. Harris
(BREMEN, Ga.) James D. Harris Coach Jim Harris, 68, of Bremen, Ga., died
Friday, Aug. 31, 2007.
Mr. Harris was born on May 20, 1939, in LaFayette, Ga., the son of the late
Gordon Buck Harris and Bertha Webb Harris. He was a retired teacher, coach and
principal of Bremen High School, former head coach at Randolph County High
School during the early 1960s and member of First United Methodist Church of
Bremen.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Mrs.
Emily Thornton Harris.
Survivors include a son, R. Dobson Harris of Mableton, Ga.; sisters,
Charlotte Haggard of Clearwater, Fla., Billie Carlock and Brenda Gass of Rock
Spring, Ga., Elaine Leverett of Dalton, Ga., and Andrea Hicks of LaFayette.
Services were Sunday, Sept. 2, at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of
Bremen with Dr. Stanley McCain, the Rev. Keith Moore and the Rev. Wayne Monroe
officiating. Music was by Dessie Morgan, Ann Hobbs, Mrs. Martha Greer and Lynn
Hodges. Bill Standifer, Jeffrey Emerson, Glenn Hoobler Gary Harper, Gene
Gillespie and Reese Slaughter served as pallbearers. Bremen High School
football players and wrestlers 1966-1979 served as honorary pallbearers. Burial
followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Milford Young
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Milford Young, 78, of LaGrange, Ga., died Friday, Oct. 5,
2007, at West Georgia Medical Center.
Mr. Young was born on April 19, 1929, in Roanoke, son of the late James
Wheeler and Nettie Ogletree Young. He had lived in LaGrange most of his life,
was a member of Franklin Road Baptist Church and attended East Vernon Baptist
Church. He was retired from Gusto Brands and was a United States Army veteran
of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Ruby Young of LaGrange; son, John
Young of Franklin, Ga.; daughter, Terrie Phillips of LaGrange; three
grandchildren; sister, Clara Young Dempsey of Fortson, Ga.; and several nieces
and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, James G. Young.
Services will be at 3 Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel with
the Rev. Don Ellison officiating. Interment will be at Myrtle Hill Cemetery in
Hogansville, Ga.

John W. Jackson
(BREMEN, Ga.) John W. Jackson, 60, of Bremen, Ga. died Thursday, Oct. 4,
2007, at Emory Hospital in Atlanta.
He was born Aug. 15, 1947, in Carroll County, Ga., to the late Cliff Jackson
and Alice Ayers Jackson. Mr. Jackson was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in
the Vietnam Conflict and worked as a courier for the Southwire Corporation for
more than 37 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and enjoyed
gardening, fishing and time at the beach.
Survivors include his wife, Dianne Taylor Jackson; a son, John Nathan
Jackson of Douglasville, Ga.; a daughter, Valerie Jackson Kretsch of Atlanta;
five sisters, Beatrice Brown and Louise Bradley, both of Bowdon, Ga., Martha
Isaacs and Rachel Johnson, both of Franklin, Ga. and Jayne Toney of Newell;
four brothers, Jesse Jackson, Howard Jackson and James Jackson, all of
Carrollton, Ga., and Tom Jackson of Ranburne; two grandchildren; and a number
of nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a
sister, Josephine Fletcher.
Funeral services were Sunday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. from Liberty Baptist Church
in Bowdon with the Rev. Ken Bowman officiating and a eulogy by Mrs. Karen
Jackson. Pallbearers were Tony Taylor, Thomas Taylor, Patrick Await, James
O'Quinn, Mike Greene and Jeff Layton. Honorary pallbearers were employees of
the Southwire Corporation. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in
Bremen, Ga.

Center, Roanoke.

Miss., and Douglas Borders of Cedar Springs; ten grandchildren; 17 great-

(CHELSEA) Gladys Sears Botts, 88, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, in an assisted
living home in Chelsea.
Gladys, originally from Wedowee, was the daughter of Carson and Irene Payne.
She is survived by one son, Bobby Ray Sears; one sister, Elleree Payne
Clark; two granddaughters; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 2 p.m. at Bear Creek Methodist
Church in Woodland.

(FIVE POINTS) Services for James Wesley Cash, 71, of Five Points were
Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Standing Rock United Methodist Church with

Mr. Cash died Saturday, Oct, 6, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Shawd of Five Points; one daughter, Susan
Barker of Talking Rock, Ga.; two brothers, Paul Cash of Daytona, Fla., and
Charles Cash of Canton, Ga.; and one grandchild.
Mr. Cash was born March 14, 1936, son of Jack and Hazel Brown Cash. He was
of the Baptist faith, was retired from the Standing Rock Auction and had served
in the United States Army. Mr. Cash was preceded in death by his parents.

(WADLEY) Services for Mildred Alice Pearson, 91, of Wadley were Tuesday,
Oct. 9, 2007, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Wadley, with the

Wadley City Cemetery.
Miss Pearson died Sunday, Oct. 7, at Clay County Nursing Home.
Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Katherine Pearson
of Wadley; sister-in-law Sara Pearson of Wadley; and a host of nieces and
nephews.
Miss Pearson was born Oct. 13, 1915, daughter of the late Morgan Milton
Pearson Sr. and the late Florence Harris Pearson. She was a member of First
United Methodist Church of Wadley and was a retired elementary school teacher
for the Carroll County (Georgia) School System. Miss Pearson is preceded in
death by one brother, Milton Pearson; and one sister, Sara Robert Darden.

Mr. Baker is survived by his wife, Janie Hill Baker of Heflin; one daughter,
Kimberly Jane Baker of Heflin; one son, Michael James Baker of Heflin; one
granddaughter; his mother, Joanna Baker of Oxford; two sisters, Norma Chapman
of Oxford and Nancy Morgan of Lineville; three brothers, Johnny Baker of
Lineville, Jimmy Lee Baker Jr. of Hollis Crossroads and William Baker of Delta;
several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Baker was born July 17, 1963, the son of Jimmy Lee and Joanne Blanchard
Baker. He was a member of Woodland Church of God and a life driver for
Franklin Aluminum. Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his father, Jimmy Lee
Baker Sr.; two sons, Bobby Wayne Baker and Jason Dewayne Baker; one sister,
Wanda Smith; and a nephew.

Betty Lou Duncan
(GREENVILLE, N.C.) Betty Lou Duncan, 69, died on Wednesday, October 3, 2007.
Services for Mrs. Duncan will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Life Gate
Baptist Church, Greenville. Burial will follow at Mack Smith Family Cemetery.
Mrs. Duncan was preceded in death by her parents, Houston and Mattie Hanvey
Hudgins, and one sister, Dura Riddle.
She was an active member of Life Gate Baptist Church. A loving wife, mother,
grandmother, sister and friend who was dedicated to her family and her church,
she took great pleasure in her work as a teacher's assistant at her church and
helped the rest of the staff in any way that she could.
She is survived by her husband, Aden Duncan of the home; one son, Terry
Duncan of Greenville; two daughters, Teresa Butler of Winterville and Tammy
Hodges of Greenville; four brothers, Sam Hudgins of Heflin, Horace Hudgins of
Ocilla, Ga., Charles Hudgins of Gadsden and Tommy Gill of Moody; three sisters,
Mary Johnson of Wellington, Dot Smith of Heflin and Judy Brown of Woodland;
five grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 at Farmer Funeral Service.

Bertie Stewart Richardson
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Mrs. Bertie Stewart Richardson, 90, of LaGrange, Ga., died
Tuesday, October 2, 2007. at Hospice LaGrange.
She was born July 22, 1917, in Randolph County, Ala., the daughter of the
late Willie and Elizabeth McCord Stewart. She was a member of Cool Springs
Methodist Church and retired from Callaway Mills after 36 years of service.
Mrs. Richardson was an avid Braves fan. She loved baseball, working in her yard
and sewing and was always smiling.
Survivors include one granddaughter, Deborah Carpenter; two grandsons, Larry
Scarborough and William Scarborough, all of LaGrange; six great-grandchildren;
16 great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Willie Richardson; a daughter, Minnie L. Scarborough; a sister,
Essie May Stewart; and six brothers.
A funeral service was on Thursday, Oct. 4, at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel
with the Rev. Max McCord officiating. Interment was at Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Bussey was born May 7, 1953, in Randolph County, daughter of Alma Akins
Clark of LaGrange, Ga., and the late Lummie Freeman. She was a homemaker and a
Baptist by faith.
Survivors other than her mother include her sons, Dan Bussey and Dustin
Bussey of Phenix City; five grandchildren; three sisters, Rosa Hammock of
Huguley, Pat Cole of Valley and Martha Tankersley of LaGrange; two brothers,
James Freeman of Valley and Tommy Freeman of LaGrange; and numerous nieces and
nephews.

Mrs. Wiggins was born Feb. 7, 1935, in Randolph County to the late H.E.
Lovvorn, Jr. and Iva Meadows Lovvorn. After attending West Georgia College,
Mrs. Wiggins taught business education at Ranburne High School before she began
to work with her husband, Johnny Wiggins, at their drugstore, Wiggins Pharmacy,
in Bowdon. Her work there led her to open The Gift Shop in the mid-1970s, which
she owned and operated for seven years. Mrs. Wiggins was also very active in
her church, Bowdon First United Methodist, and the community. At church, she
was a member of Electa Lovvorn Circle, taught Sunday School, was the youth
coordinator, and served on numerous other committees. In the community, she
volunteered her time with the American Cancer Society, the Bowdon High School
Band Booster Club and the PTA.
Mrs. Wiggins is survived by her husband, Johnny Wiggins of Bowdon; her son,
Stan Wiggins of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; her daughter, Sandi Camp of Villa Rica, Ga.;
her sister, Mary Clyde Stewart of Woodland; and five grandchildren.
Services for Mrs. Wiggins were Saturday, Oct. 6, at 10 a.m. at Bowdon First
United Methodist Church. Rev. Darryl Hessel and Rev. Kent Reynolds officiated.
Jeff Stewart, Joe Stewart, Andrew Stewart, Jay Stewart, James McCord, Jerry
Tolbert, John Parker and Lane Gay served as pallbearers.

(MURPHY, Texas) Matthew Aidan Cantrell, son of Michael Alan and Ave Marie

Mrs. Belt died Thursday, Oct. 11, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical
Center Long-Term Extended Care.

Winston, Ga., Mearl Blodgett of James Town, Calif., Louise Lavender of

Mrs. Belt was born Aug. 5, 1927, the daughter of Ross and Vernon Daisey

daughter, Shelia Ann Ligon of Delta; two sons, Robert Michael Porteous of Twin
Lakes, Wis., Joseph Allen Porteous of Delta; two sisters, Shelia Lumus and
Janet Nelson of Heflin; one brother, Tim Porteous of Heflin; and 11
grandchildren.
Mr. Porteous was born May 25, 1941; the son of George Dean and Josephine
Kruger Porteous. He had worked in construction as a cabinet maker. Mr. Porteous
was preceded in death by his parents and one son, John James Porteous Jr.

Belle Ferrell Newell
(WARM SPRINGS, Ga.) Belle Ferrell Newell, 83, formerly of Hogansville, Ga.,
died Tuesday, October 9, 2007, at Warm Springs Nursing Home.
Born July 30, 1924, in Randolph County, Ala., Mrs. Newell was the daughter
of the late Alfred and Ada Hendley Bonner. She lived in Hogansville most of her
life, was a member of Southwest LaGrange Baptist Church and was a longtime
member of Antioch Baptist Church in Hogansville. She retired from Uniroyal Inc.
after 44 years of service.
Survivors include her daughter, Janice Mitchell of LaGrange, Ga.; son, Lee
Ferrell of Warm Springs; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m., Friday in the chapel of Claude A. McKibben and
Sons Funeral Home. The Rev. Bryan Geter will officiate and interment will be in
Myrtle Hill Cemetery.

(ROOPVILLE, Ga.) Elsie Francis Schoenberner, 88, of Roopville, Ga., died
Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007.
Mrs. Schoenberner was born in Riverside, Calif:, on Dec. 24, 1918, the
daughter of the late Frederick Alfred Stebler and Eva Violet Woodman Stebler.
She was a homemaker, a member of St. Phillip Cathedral in Atlanta and attended
the University of Southern California majoring in early childhood education.
Survivors include sons, Robert Bob Schoenberner of Roanoke and Steve
Schoenberner of Roopville; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert
Schoenberner; sisters, Jessie Stebler Sweet, Irene Stebler Patterson and Hazel
Stebler Lewy; brother, Frederick Stebler; and great-granddaughter, Anna Hatcher.
A graveside service and interment was Thursday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. at
Arlington Memorial Park with the Rev. Jay Hammett officiating.

Mr. Bassett is survived by two daughters, Ashley Bassett of Columbus, Ga.,

three brothers, Kenneth Bassett of Valley, Jerry Bassett of Auburn and Steve

Mr. Bassett was born Aug. 3, 1956, in Baltimore, Md. He was an avid sports
fan and was a diehard Auburn fan. Mr. Bassett loved life and his family. He was

Jean McMurray Cauthen
(ATHENS) Jean McMurray Cauthen of Athens, Ala., died at her home on Sunday,
Oct. 21, 2007.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dr. Frank Cauthen; her son,
Frank Cauthen Jr. of Tuscaloosa; her daughter, Susan Cauthen of Monrovia; four
grandchildren; and two sisters, Jane McMurray Edwards of Roanoke and Corrie
McMurray Logan of Birmingham.
Mrs. Cauthen was born in Roanoke on Dec. 12, 1931, daughter of Doris Anglin
McMurray and William Augustus McMurray. She was preceded in death by her
parents; a sister, Ann McMurray Massey of Birmingham; and three brothers,
William Augustus McMurray Jr. of Fairhope, Thomas Anglin McMurray and James
Leonard McMurray of Roanoke.
Mrs. Cauthen graduated from the University of Alabama in 1954, having earned
a degree in elementary education. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Social
Sorority. After teaching in the public elementary schools of Andalusia,
Birmingham and Jackson, Miss., Mrs. Cauthen left teaching and devoted her life
to her family, her church and her home. She was a member of the Harris Sunday
School class in First Methodist Church, Athens. Also she was a devoted member
of The Athens Study Club and The Thursday Bible Study.
Her favorite pastimes were cooking, continually making her home more livable
and attractive; working in her plantings; and sitting in her swing in
her secret garden drinking her morning coffee. All her life she wanted her
epitaph to be, She Loved the Beauty of the Earth.
Her remains will be cremated. A memorial service honoring Mrs. Cauthen will
be conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Bassham at First United Methodist Church of
Athens on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 4 p.m. The family will receive friends in the
church parlor three hours before the service begins.
The family requests that in place of flowers any gifts in her honor be
directed to First Methodist Church, Athens, Hospice of Athens and Limestone
County, The Athens-Limestone Hospital Foundation, or the organization of one's

chance he could. Mr. Armstrong was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Bell

of the U.S. Air Force and was retired from Lockheed-Martin.

Survivors include a son, Steve Martin Johnson of Roanoke; two
granddaughters; one sister, Katherine Rampy of Woodland; one brother, Ernest
Johnson of Roanoke; and four nephews.
A former resident of Atlanta and East Point, Ga., Mr. Johnson was a Randolph
County native, born Dec. 17, 191, son of Robert and Ethel Ernest Johnson. He
was a World War II Army veteran, a member of Big Springs Baptist Church and had
been a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. He was preceded in death by
his parents; his wife, Leah Esma Benefield Johnson; and a brother, Fred Johnson.

James Randall Cofield
(ROANOKE) Services for James Randall Randy Cofield, 63, of Roanoke were
Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev.
Harold Bonner and the Rev. Scott Whaley officiating. Burial followed in
Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mr. Cofield died Thursday, Oct. 25, at his home in Roanoke.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Brewer Cofield of Roanoke; three stepsons,
Ronnie Clark Jr., Robbie Clark and Jerry Van Nelson Jr., all of Roanoke; one
uncle, Guy Cofield of Birmingham; and seven grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Clark Jr., Robbie Clark, Jerry Van Nelson Jr., Gary
Dalton, Larry Dalton and Robert French. Honorary pallbearers will be [were] Pat
Walls and Sonny Salters.
Mr. Cofield was born March 21, 1944, son of Baron and Katherine Hudson
Cofield. He was retired after 25 years of employment with UPS. Mr. Cofield was
preceded in death by his parents.

James Ray Kuykendall
(FORT PAYNE) James Ray Kuykendall, 79, of Fort Payne died Monday, Oct. 15,
2007. After earning his B.S. degree in pharmacy at Auburn in 1949, he served in
the Navy and the Marines from 1950 to 1954, receiving a Bronze Star. He retired
as manager and chief pharmacist at Harco Drugs in 1993.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Leonard and La Downs
Kuykendall. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Kirby Kuykendall; a son,
Leonard Len Kirby Kuykendall; granddaughter, Sarah Lynn Kuykendall of
Prattville; a daughter, Lucia Ruth Kuykendall; two grandsons and one
granddaughter.
The founding president of Landmarks of DeKalb County in 1969, he served as
vice president for more than 30 yeas. He received a number of awards from
Landmarks, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, which is now named for
him. Mr. Kuykendall helped to produce every Landmarks publication and for 20
years edited the prize-winning Landmarks News. Through his efforts many homes
and buildings have been placed on the Alabama Register of Historic Homes and
Places and some have been added to the National Register. He has also been
responsible for the erection of official historic markers in Dekalb County and
led the efforts to establish three historic districts in Fort Payne.
In 1985 Mr. Kuykendall was elected president of the Alabama Historical
Association. He served on the executive board of AHA for a number of years.
For eight years he chaired the committees which chose the recipient of the
most outstanding local historical association award, which is now named the
James Ray Kuykendall award. He served on the advisory board of the Arts and
Humanities Center at Auburn University for several years. He received the Award
of Merit and the Distinguished Service Award from the Alabama Historical
Commission. After writing a book on Alabama pharmacy, he received the Bowl of
Hygia, pharmacy's highest award.
Named by the Junior Chamber of Commerce as the Outstanding Young Man of Fort
Payne in 1962, he served as president of the Jaycees in 1963. He served as
president of the Fort Payne Rotary Club in 1991 and was also elected district
governor of that year. He was honored with the Third Level Paul Harris Award in
2004. As president of the Dekalb County Tourist Association in 1966, he helped
establish Dekalb County's first welcome center. He also served as a director of
the Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the American Legion and
the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Kuykendall was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Fort Payne and
he served as a deacon for 28 years.
Services were at 11 [a].m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at First Baptist Church, Fort
Payne, with Dr. Pat McFadden officiating. Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery. In
lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church, Fort Payne or
Landmarks of Dekalb County.

Oct. 27, 2007, at his residence in Graham.

Mildred Pullen Smith
(LANETT) Mildred Pullen Smith, 84, of Lanett died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007,
at her home.
Mrs. Smith was born in Roanoke on Sept. 30, 1923, daughter of the late
Corburt Harvey and Ellen Manning Pullen. She graduated from Milltown in 1941,
moved to Langdale and attended business college while working at Langdale Mill.
She retired from West Point Pepperell as cashier and payroll supervisor of
Langdale Mill. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Valley, which she
served as hostess for many years, and the Garden Club.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years, James Mathews Smith; a son, James
Lamar Smith of Lanett; a daughter, Cecelia Smith Fuller of Lanett; three
grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Imogene Lindley of Wedowee
and Josephine Lane of Roanoke; and 22 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in
death by her brothers Henry Q. Pullen, Horace P. Pullen and Marlin Pullen.
Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 2
p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, with burial in Langdale Cemetery.

Wyatt Wright Jr.
(WEDOWEE) Graveside services for Wyatt Wright Jr., 87, of Wedowee were
Friday, Oct. 26, 2007, at 1 p.m. at Levens Baptist Church Cemetery with the
Revs. Joe Bob Traylor and Tim Whaley officiating.
Pallbearers were Rocky Cook, Ned Wright, Keith Langley, Roy Brazeal, Tommy
Cofield, Wayne Taylor, Billy Adamson and Dennis Bailey. Honorary pallbearers
were Joey Burns, Terry Lovvorn, Jerry Rice, Johnny Earnest, Jonathan Wood and
Craig McClure.
Mr. Wright died Wednesday, Oct. 24, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
Mr. Wright is survived by his wife, Lola Inez Booker Wright of Wedowee; one
daughter, Julie Ann Joyner of Newnan, Ga.; one son, Wyatt Wright III of
Wedowee; three grandchildren; one sister, Flora Wright of Ashland; and a host
of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Wright was born Jan. 18, 1920, the son of Wyatt and Bertha Capehart
Wright Sr. He was a member of the Levens Baptist Church, owner/operator of
various businesses, and had served in the United States Army Air Force during
World War II. Mr. Wright was preceded in death by his parents.

OBITUARY
Willie Clarence Bice
1919-2007
Funeral services for Mr. Willie Clarence Bice, 87, of Motley were Monday,
October 8. 2007 at 11:00 am at the Union Baptist Church. Rev. Noel Vickers
officiated. Burial followed in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. He lay in
state at the church for one hour prior to the services. The family received
friends on Sunday, October 7, 2007 from 4:00 pm-7:00 pm at Radney Funeral Home.
Mr. Bice passed away on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at East Alabama Medical
Center. He was born on November 7, 1919 in Clay County to Sam Bice and Octava
Nix Bice. Mr. Bice attended the Union Baptist Church and spent a lot of time
reading his Bible. He served in the U.S. Navy, was a truck driver, enjoyed
gardening, taking care of his yard, and was an avid reader, especially history.
He is survived by his son, Jerry Bice (Shelia) of Wadley; grandsons, Derek
Bice (Dana) of Jackson, GA, and Kane Bice (Jennifer) of Aiken, SC; great
grandchildren, Will Bice, Jarrett Bice, and Landon Bice; and sister, Christine
McCrary of Sylacauga.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Meigs Bice; parents; and
brother; Redge Bice.
