OBITUARIES:
Clarence Baynard Butler
(GRAHAM) Clarence Baynard Butler, 78, of 2108 County Rd. 92, Graham, died
Wednesday, May 27, 1998.
He was born in Randolph County July 15, 1919, son of Sadie Huckeba Butler and the
late Lloyd Butler. Mr. Butler was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of Corinth
Baptist Church, a Mason, a Navy veteran of World War II, and was a retired postmaster
at Graham.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Crawford Butler of Graham; a daughter, Jane Fisher
of Norcross, Ga.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Bob Butler of
Graham; a sister Murrah Young of Graham; and his mother Sadie Butler of Graham.
The funeral service was Saturday, May 30, at 3 p.m. from the chapel of Rainwater-West
Funeral Home with Elder Homer Benefield, Elder James Embry and Sam Carpenter
officiating. Music was under the direction of Hugh McGraw. Interment followed in the
Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Rick Norton, Scott Butler, Paul Herring, Allen Strickland, Steve
Crawford and Joe Young. Honorary escorts were employees of Bank of Wedowee.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Chattahoochee
Hospice, 6 Medical Park North, Valley AL 36854.
Rainwater-West Funeral Home, Bowdon, Ga., was in charge of arrangements.

Exa Emily Hunter Kerr
(WEDOWEE) Exa Emily Hunter Kerr, 89, of Wedowee died Wednesday, May 27,
1998, at Wedowee Hospital after an extended illness.
The funeral service was Friday, May 29, at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in
Wedowee, with the Revs. Tom Roberts and Earl Gordon and Dr. Harris Hand officiating.
Burial was in Wedowee City Cemetery.
Mrs. Kerr was born Nov. 1, 1908, daughter of James Robert Hunter and Anner Lee
Price Hunter. She was a homemaker, a teacher in the Randolph County school system, a
lifetime member of the Wedowee Garden Club, and a member of First United Methodist
Church, Wedowee. Mrs. Kerr was preceded in death by a daughter, Melinda Kerr Wilson,
a son, R. H. Kerr Jr., and a brother, John William Hunter.
Survivors include her husband, R. H. Kerr of Wedowee; two daughters, Frances Hunter
Kerr Hanson of Troy and Jane K. Williamson of Montgomery; eight grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be [were] Hunter Kerr Hanson, Emory Hunter Hanson, Michael K.
Williamson, Barry L. Wilson Jr., Patrick Wilson, Clinton Wilson, Gregory Childs and
James Jacobs.

Harry W. Winston
(ROANOKE) Harry W. Winston, 80, of Roanoke died Thursday, May 28, 1998,
at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Tuskegee.
The funeral service was Monday, June 1, at 11 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church,
Roanoke, with the Rev. Tommie L. Finley officiating. Burial was in East Roanoke
Cemetery.
Survivors include his former wife, Carrie G. Winston of Roanoke, and several nieces
and nephews.
Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Freeman Shelnutt
(ROME, Ga.) Freeman Shelnutt, 63, of Rome, Ga., died Wednesday, May 6, 1998,
at a Rome hospital.
Mr. Shelnutt was born in Troup County, Oct. 7, 1934, son of the late John T. Shelnutt
and Bessie Eley Shelnutt. He was a member of New Armuchee Baptist Church, Rome,
and prior to retirement, was employed by the Floyd County Board of Education.
Survivors include his widow, Louise P. Shelnutt, to whom he was married April 8,
1955; two daughters, Regina Barnes of Rome and Kim Miller of Calhoun, Ga.; a sister,
Carolyn Watson of Hogansville, Ga.; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Mr. Shelnutt's wife is from Wedowee.
The funeral service was at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at New Armuchee Baptist Church
with the Revs. Ed Holsomback, Tim Rice and Willard MacAllaster officiating. Burial was
at New Armuchee Baptist Church Cemetery.

Clarence Thomas Morton
(ROANOKE) The funeral service for Clarence Thomas "Pig" Morton, 70, of Roanoke
was at 3 p.m. Monday, June 1, 1998, at Faith Baptist Church, with the Revs. S. T. Janney
and Steve Kilpatrick officiating. Burial followed in Cedarwood Cemetery.
Mr. Morton died Sunday, May 31, at his residence following an extended illness.
A resident of Randolph County for more than 50 years, he was born June 28, 1927,
in Chambers County, son of John Will and Verna Jeter Morton. He had been employed
in the textile industry and was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Richardson Morton of Roanoke; one son, LaDon
Morton of Roanoke; step-mother, Mamie Morton of LaGrange, Ga.; two sisters, Frances
Whitley of Griffin, Ga., and Ellen Dramis of Plantation, Fla.; a brother, Joe Morton of
Tallapoosa, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

(LAFAYETTE) Brother Willie L. Ellison, 90, of LaFayette died Saturday, May 30,
1998, at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
The funeral service was at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's
Witnesses, Roanoke, with Bro. Berner Jones and Bro. Ross Sessions officiating. Burial
was at Rehope Baptist Church Cemetery, Five Points.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Ellison of LaFayette; a son, Oscar Ellison of
Louisville, Ky.; a stepson, John Lewis Johnson of Lanett; two step-daughters, Annette
Doleman and Louise Giddens of Valley; three grandchildren; a sister, Rebecca Webb of
Milwaukee, Wis.; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Mr. Ellison was preceded in death by his parents, Noah "Bud" Ellison and Julia Lillian
Ann Ellison; a son, Ocie Ellison; two brothers, George Ellison and Charlie Ellison; and
two sisters, Claudia Todd and LaMerle Ellison.

(WEDOWEE) William P. "Jack" Wallace, 72, of Wedowee died Sunday, May 31, 1998,
at his home after an extended illness.
Funeral services were Tuesday, June 2, at 2 p.m. at Pinetucky Baptist Church, with the
Revs. Tommy Burke and Billy Morris officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.
A Clay County native, Mr. Wallace was born April 14, 1926, son of Elmer Dewey and
Susan Emma Lambert Wallace. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of
Pinetucky Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Cressell Huddleston Wallace of Wedowee; a step-daughter,
Judy Bates of Longview, Wash.; one sister, Louise White of Pell City; one brother,
Kenneth Karen Wallace of Talladega; four step-grandchildren and five step-great-
grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Wayne Huddleston, Ray Huddleston, David Huddleston, Mike Bates,
Wendell Huddleston, Greg East and Kevin Wallace.

(SHELBYVILLE, Ky.) Dallas "Teenie" Freeman, 49, of Shelbyville, Ky., died Monday,
May 18, 1998, at University of Louisville Hospital, Louisville, Ky.
Funeral services were Friday, May 29, at 1 p.m. at Zion at the Hill A.M.E. Church,
Opelika, with the Rev. Robert Devose and the Rev. Willie Adams officiating. Burial was
in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his mother, Ida Mae Freeman of Kansas City, Kan.; a daughter, Linda
Freeman of Jacksonville; two step-daughters, Marilyn Thomas and Yvonne Thomas of
Anniston; a step-son, Brian Willis of Birmingham; two brothers, Dezzie B. Freeman Jr. of
Detroit, Mich., and Willie George Freeman of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; four step-brothers, Carl
Freeman, Gregg Freeman and Glen Freeman of Oak Ridge and Steven Darnell Freeman of
Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Mary J. Johnson of Kansas City and Janice Freeman of
Roanoke; two step-sisters, Connie Freeman and Judy Freeman of Oak Ridge; and several
grandchildren. Mr. Freeman was preceded in death by his father, Dezzie B. Freeman.

(ROANOKE) Edna "Sue" Parks, 73, of Roanoke died Wednesday, May 20, 1998.
Funeral services were Saturday, May 23, at 2 p.m. at Saint Paul Baptist Church, with
burial in Canaan Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. William Phillips officiated.
Survivors include two sons, Grover Baker of Roanoke and Jerome Johnson of Phenix
City; a sister, Mrs. Helen Boddie of Roanoke; 12 grandchildren and 24 great-
grandchildren.

Flora Jean Thrasher Fowler
(WEDOWEE) Flora Jean Thrasher Fowler, 88, of Wedowee died Saturday,
June 6, 1998, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston following an extended illness.
Services were Tuesday, June 9, at 11 a.m. at Valley Grove Baptist Church, with the
Rev. Billy East officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. Fowler was born July 20, 1909, daughter of David Thrasher and Gertrude Starnes
Thrasher. She was a homemaker and a member of Iduma Congregational Methodist
Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Wesley Fowler, and four
children, Verna Lewis, Melvis Fowler, Bennis Fowler and Opealene Loveless.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Parks of Oxford; two sons, Dennis Fowler
of Roanoke and Donald Fowler of Anniston; 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and
four great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Donnie Fowler, Keith Fowler,
Shane Fowler, Terry Loveless,
Don Rogers and Anthony Parks.

George Lorenzo Moore
(THE ROCK, Ga.) George Lorenzo Moore, 76, of The Rock, Ga., died Sunday
morning, June 7, 1998, at Florence Hand Nursing Home in LaGrange, Ga.
Mr. Moore was born in Clay County, Ala., to the late Robert Stell Moore and Mollie
Kennedy Moore. He was a proud veteran of World War II and a member of the Baptist
faith.
Mr. Moore is survived by his dear friend and companion, Mrs. Mae C. Kimbrell; seven
sons, Sammie Moore of Birmingham, R. V. Moore, Danny Moore, Charlie Moore, Terry
Moore and Joel Moore of Wadley, and Philip Moore of Greenville, S.C.; four daughters,
Wilma Faye Christian of Cumming, Ga., Joyce Kraus and Jan Sieggers of Wadley and
Gaye Nann Carter of Atlanta; one brother, Fred Moore of Stockbridge, Ga.; one sister,
Maude Blair of Decatur, Ala.; 12 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was Tuesday, June 9, at 11 a.m. in the Moody Funeral Home Chapel
in Zebulon, Ga., with the Rev. Ted Coody officiating. Burial followed in the Moody
Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Clare Purcell Jeffers
(TRUSSVILLE) Graveside services for Clare Purcell Jeffers, 87, of Trussville were
Sunday, June 7, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Cedarwood Cemetery, with Dr. Doug Turner
officiating.
Mr. Jeffers died Friday, June 5, at DCH Regional Medical Center Northport,
Tuscaloosa.
A Randolph County native, Mr. Jeffers was born Dec. 6, 1910, son of James Albert and
Susie Davis Jeffers. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death
by his parents; one sister, Maelillie Bartlett; and many other brothers and sisters.
Survivors include one niece, Mary Elizabeth Bartlett Brown of Trussville and many
other nieces and nephews.

George Talley
(ROANOKE) The funeral service for George Talley, 89, of Roanoke was Monday,
June 8, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Big Springs Baptist Church, with the Revs. Scott Hanna,
Tommy Gene Young and Johnny Young officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Talley died Saturday, June 6, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mr. Talley was born Sept. 3, 1908, son of
Willie J. and Margaret Bailey Talley, in Heard County, Ga. He was a self-employed
farmer and a member of Big Springs Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Effie Lee Talley of Roanoke; two daughters, Margaret Harris
of Dalonega, Ga., and Barbara Davidson of Gainesville, Ga.; three step-daughters, Shirley
Watson of Leighton, Carolyn McDaniel of Roanoke and Marie Moore of Phoenix, Ariz.;
one step-son, John Moore of Wetumpka; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Wilner Jerrell Carson
Funeral services for Wilner Jerrell Carson, 55, of Wadley, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday,
June 10, 1998, at Abanda Methodist Church, with the Rev. James Duke officiating. Burial
will follow in Concord Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Carson died Monday, June 8, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born August 22, 1842 [1942], son of
Ernest P. and Annie Lee Carson. He had been employed with Amoco Mills, and was a
member of the Roanoke National Guard for 33 years.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Windsor Carson of Wadley; three daughters, Cynthia
Jones of Wadley, Dixie Forman of Ashland, and Dawn Galloup of Rock Mills; three sons,
Tim Carson of Wadley and Steven Carson and Anthony Carson of Roanoke; and seven
grandchildren.
Mr. Carson will lie in state at the church, beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

LeRoy Phillips
(ROANOKE) LeRoy "Kemosabe" Phillips, 67, of Roanoke died Thursday,
June 11, 1998, at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
Funeral services were Tuesday, June 16, at 1 p.m. at Mount Olive United Methodist
Church, Wadley, with the Rev. Hollis Boykins officiating. Burial was in the adjoining
cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Audrey Phillips of Roanoke; six sons, Jimmy Phillips, Larry
Phillips, Sammy Phillips, Mark Phillips, Michael Phillips and Eric Phillips, all of Roanoke;
four daughters, Helen Lewis, Linda Cameron and Kathy Phillips of Roanoke and Mary
Herring of Woodland; 48 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two nieces; five nephews;
and two very special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Lawson Trammell. He was preceded in death
by his parents, Alford and Ella Phillips, and a daughter, Deborah Kaye Phillips.

Tommy Ted Traylor
(METAIRIE, La.) Tommy Ted Traylor, a retired port captain for Waterman Steamship
Co., died Friday, June 12, 1998, of a heart attack at East Jefferson General Hospital, New
Orleans, La. He was 75.
Mr. Traylor was born in Wedowee and lived in Metairie, La., for 25 years. He attended
Howard University on a football scholarship. Mr. Traylor worked for Waterman
Steamship Co. for 45 years and was a merchant marine in World War II. He was a
member of Crescent City Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Nina Huggins Traylor; three sons, Edward Lamar Traylor of
Houston, Stephen E. Traylor of Slidell, La., and Kevin R. Traylor of Danville, Calif.;
one daughter, Toni Dufrene; a stepdaughter, Elaine Miller; 14 grandchildren; and
six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Monday, June 15, at 11 a.m. at Lamana-Panno-Fallo Funeral
Home. Burial was in the Garden of Memories, Metairie.

Sara S. Bassett
(HOGANSVILLE, Ga.) Sara Smallwood Bassett, 85, of Hogansville, Ga., died Sunday,
June 14, 1998, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at St. James United Methodist
Church in Hogansville. The Rev. David Pickard will officiate, and interment will be in
Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville.
Mrs. Bassett was born June 9, 1913, in Randolph County, Ala., daughter of the late
Andrew Thomas Smallwood and the late Bernice Bishop Smallwood. She lived at
Hogansville most of her life, was a member of St. James United Methodist Church and
was the wife of the late Ace Bassett.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

of arrangements.

Shirley Ann Staples
(ATLANTA) Shirley Ann Staples, 62, of Atlanta died Sunday, June 7, 1998,
at Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Staples of Atlanta and Tracy Staples of Stone
Mountain, Ga.; three sisters, Willie Lee Smith and Susie Mae Phillips of Roanoke and
Mary Elizabeth Nelson of Anniston; a brother, Robert McClendon of Roanoke; and
six grandchildren.
Services for Mrs. Staples were Wednesday, June 10, at 3 p.m. at Canaan Baptist
Church, Welch, with the Revs. Rodney K. Turner, Calvin Trammell, W. R. Terry and
C. L. Wilkes officiating. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery.
Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Dewey Evans
(HOGANSVILLE, GA.) Dewey Evans, 83, of Hogansville, Ga., died Sunday,
June 14, 1998, at his home.
The funeral service was conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, at Antioch Baptist
Church in Hogansville. The Revs. Bill Perry, Frank Powers and Wesley Boatman
officiated, and interment was in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville.
Pallbearers were Greg Brown, Steve Evans, Jeff Evans, Lee Sledge, Bryan Perry,
Barry Jones and Buddy Roden.
Mr. Evans was born Sept. 26, 1914, in Randolph County, Ala., son of the late Thomas
and Mary Bailey Evans. He had lived at Hogansville for more than 50 years, was a
member of Antioch Baptist Church and was a member of the Hogansville Masonic Lodge.
He retired from Uniroyal Inc. in Hogansville, and for more than 30 years, he owned and
drove a school bus for Troup County Board of Education.
Survivors include his wife, Alma Bailey Evans of Hogansville; two daughters, Mrs.
Joyce Brown of Newnan, Ga., and Mrs. Sylvia Perry of Rossville, Ga.; one son, Jerry
Evans of Fairburn, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by a son, Barry Evans, and a great-granddaughter, Kristy Roden.

Hurren Weyburn Kirby
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Hurren Weyburn Kirby, 67, of Roanoke will be
Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs.
Gerald Sheppard and Don Quick officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memory
Gardens.
Mr. Kirby died Monday June 15, at the VA Hospital in Montgomery.
A Randolph County native and lifelong resident, he was born Dec. 24, 1930, son of
Waites and Mattie Lou Traylor Kirby. He was a member of White's Chapel Methodist
Church and had been employed with Amoco Fabrics and Fibers Company.
Survivors include his wife, Geneva Pike Kirby of Roanoke; two daughters, Sandra
Calhoun and Debra Hill of Roanoke; two sons, Timothy Wayne Kirby and Albert Waites
Kirby of Roanoke; two sisters, Eulette Ward of Roanoke and Julia Moree of Alexandria;
two brothers, Jimmy Kirby of Roanoke and George T. Kirby of Altamonte Springs, Fla.;
ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Pike, Keith Pike, Kevin Pike, Joey Arrington,
Gene Arrington, Mark Kirby and Steve Bolt.

(PHILADELPHIA, Pa.) Frank Grady, 85, of Philadelphia, Pa., died Monday,
June 8, 1998, at Lakeneau Hospital in Philadelphia.
Mr. Grady was a native of Chambers County, Ala. Survivors include a daughter,
Anna L. Sims of Anniston; two sons, Joe Grady of Anniston and J. W. Grady of Atlanta;
19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services for Mr. Grady were Saturday, June 13, at 2 p.m. at Canaan Baptist Church,
Welch, Ala., with the Rev. L. B. Houston officiating. Arrangements were by Silmon
Mortuary, Roanoke.

Ethel Bell Houston
(ATLANTA) Ethel Bell Houston, 52, of Atlanta died Monday, June 15, 1998,
at Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta.
Funeral services will be Thursday, June 18, at 1 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church,
Broughton, with the Rev. Calvin Trammell officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining
cemetery.
Survivors include her father, E. C. Houston of Roanoke; two brothers, Willie Lewis
Houston of Atlanta and Jesse Gene Houston of Mableton, Ga.; four sisters, Nora
Holloway, Catherine Williams and Gertrude Kelley of Atlanta and Mary Frances Johnson
of Wedowee; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother,
Eunice Houston.
Visitation will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service on Wednesday after 10 a.m. The
body will be placed in the church one hour before services.

Mary Myrtice Frost
(WEDOWEE) Mary Myrtice Frost, 88, of Wedowee died Saturday, June 20, 1998,
at Wedowee Hospital.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, June 22, at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel,
with the Rev. Kenneth Johnson officiating. Burial was in Noonday Congregational
Christian Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Frost was a native of Randolph County, born June 20, 1910, daughter of James
Larkin Huey and Willie Pearl Wilson Huey. Mrs. Frost had lived in Florida for many years
before returning to Wedowee. She was a member of Noonday Congregational Christian
Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stell B. Frost.
Mrs. Frost is survived by one sister, Janie Austin of Wedowee; and one brother, Fred
Huey of Wedowee.
Pallbearers were Danny Rollins, Junior Rollins, James Rollins, Lanny Huey, Heath Huey
and Derrick Huey.

John C. 'Knox' Scales
(ANNISTON) John Charlie "Knox" Scales, 90, of Anniston died Sunday, June 21, 1998,
at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
The funeral for Mr. Scales will be Thursday, June 25, at 2 p.m. at Sweet Home Baptist
Church, Five Points. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Valdosta Shealey of Clearwater, Fla., and Johnny Scales of
Cleveland, Ohio; three daughters, Mary Liza Appleby, Sarah Trammell and Rosie Lee
Drake of Roanoke; two step-sons, Roosevelt Avery of Anniston and John Avery of
Detroit, Mich.; step-daughter Beatrice Moore of Anniston; two special nephews; and
several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlotte and John Scales Sr.; two wives, Lena
Scales and Pearl Scales; three sons, James Dupree, Sandy Lewis Trammell and Randy
Lewis Trammell; and a step-daughter, Mattie Mae Smith.
Mr. Scales was a Roanoke resident who had been living recently at Beckwood Manner
Nursing Home, Anniston. He was the oldest deacon at Sweet Home Baptist Church,
Five Points.
Visitation will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Services, Roanoke, Wednesday, June 24,
from 4 to 8 p.m. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral
service.
Clark Memorial Funeral Service of Roanoke is in charge of arrangements.

Jerry F. Sheppard
(BREMEN, Ga.) Jerry F. Sheppard Sr., 77, of Bremen, Ga., died Friday, June 19, 1998.
He was born in Clay County, April 4, 1922, son of the late George Frank Sheppard and
Carrie Ellen Hindley Sheppard. He was a retired employee of the Pepperell Textile
Company.
Survivors include his wife, Mozelle Lambert Sheppard of Bremen; daughters Geraldine
Rice of Roanoke and Carolyn Berry of Silver Creek, Ga.; sons Jerry F. "Frank" Sheppard
Jr. of Cedartown, Ga., and Joe Sheppard of Rome, Ga.; a step-son, Randy McCullers of
Dadeville; sisters Estelle Flowers of Powder Springs, Ga., and Lois Stanson of Opelika; a
brother, Jeff Sheppard of Glencoe; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services were Sunday, June 21, at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Hightower Funeral Home,
Bremen, with Elder Homer Benefield officiating. Music was by Hugh McGraw and the
Sacred Harp Singers. Grandsons John Sisson, Steve Rice, Calvin Milford, Keith
Sheppard, Scott Sheppard, Todd Sheppard and Ken Sheppard served as pallbearers.
Interment followed in Randolph Memory Garden, Roanoke.
Arrangements were by Hightower Funeral Home, Bremen.

Robert John McCollough
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Robert John McCollough, 75, of Roanoke were at
2 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 1998, at First Church of God, Roanoke, with the Rev. Tim
Teague officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mr. McCollough died June 18 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika following an
extended illness.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Feb. 1, 1923, son of David Hood
and Beulah Carpenter McCollough. He was a disabled veteran of World War II and a
member of First Church of God in Roanoke.
Survivors include his wife, Lula Mae Parmer McCollough of Roanoke; two daughters,
Bobbie Jean Huey of Auburn and Glenda Harper of Roanoke; one sister, Rena Whitley of
Roanoke; three brothers, Ernest McCollough and A. G. McCollough of Roanoke, and
Sammy McCollough of Coleyville, Texas; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be David Whitley, Ralph Gooden, Gordon Harrington, Lavelle Gooden,
Doug Brown and Chris Allen. Honorary pallbearers will be Clarence Young and
Harris Kitchens.

Herlis Howard Wilson
(WOODLAND) Herlis Howard Wilson, 79, of Woodland died Saturday, June 20, 1998,
at his residence.
Funeral services were Tuesday, June 23, at 2 p.m. at Gray Hill Church of God, with the
Rev. Ridley Parmer and the Rev. James Wiggins officiating. Burial was in the adjoining
cemetery.
Mr. Wilson was a native of Randolph County, born April 11, 1919, son of James J.
Wilson and Catherine Huddleston Wilson. He had worked with Chrysler Corporation
before returning to Randolph County.
Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Mary N. Wilson of Woodland; a daughter, Margaret
Owens of California; one grandson; three brothers, Ezra Wilson of Woodland, Julius
Wilson of Wadley and Murphey Wilson of Woodland.

(WEDOWEE) Clayton Boyd, 29, of Wedowee died Friday, June 19, 1998,
at UAB Hospital, Birmingham.
Funeral services will be at Antioch Baptist Church on Wednesday, June 24, at 1 p.m.
with the Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating. Interment will be in Antioch Baptist Church
Cemetery.
Surviving are his parents, Willie Ray and Clara Boyd of Wedowee; one son, DeAngelo
Brooks of Alex City; one sister, Mrs. Cynthia O'Neal of Wedowee; one brother, Nathan
Boyd of Wedowee; and two grandmothers, Mrs. Annie Boyd of Wedowee and Mrs. Ethel
Sterling of Lineville.

Thomas G. 'Bill' Wortham
(ANNISTON) Funeral services for Thomas G. "Bill" Wortham, 82 of Anniston will be
at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at Roanoke First United Methodist Church, with
the Rev. Kevin Thomas and the Rev. Tex Ergle officiating. Burial will follow in Randolph
Memory Gardens with graveside Masonic services.
Mr. Wortham died June 21 at Regional Medical Center in Anniston following an
extended illness.
A former long-time resident of Roanoke, he was born in Randolph County on Sept. 27,
1915, son on Thomas Leonard and Fannie Lindley Wortham. He was the owner of the
Martin Theatre in Roanoke and was a member of Kiwanis Club International in Roanoke
and Oxford, a 32nd-degree Mason of the Roanoke Lodge #132, F&AM, a member of the
Dearmanville United Methodist Men's Club and a member of First United Methodist
Church of Roanoke.
He is survived by his wife, Bessie Wortham of Anniston; one daughter, Bonnie W. Wall
of Summerville, S.C.; one step-son, Dr. Jerry L. Kitchens of Birmingham; and one
grandchild, Dr. Anne Hearn Bussian of Birmingham.
The family will accept flowers, or donations may be made to the First United Methodist
Church of Roanoke Building Fund, P.O. Box 40, Roanoke, AL 36274.
Pallbearers will be members of the Roanoke Masonic Lodge #132, F&AM.
Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Nixon, Floyd French, Dr. Jerry Kitchens,
Cecil Lindley, Reid House, John House, Lee Wortham and Dr. Joel Hearn.

Blanche Mozelle Crowder
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Blanche Mozelle Crowder, 83, of Roanoke were at
2 p.m., on Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at Fellowship Baptist Church, with the Rev. Cecil
Halsey and the Rev. Ray Runyan officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Crowder died June 21 at Randolph County Hospital following a short illness.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Aug. 4, 1914, daughter of Marion
and Julia Hunt Owens. She had been employed at Handley Mills and was a member of
Fellowship Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jewell Frank
Crowder.
Survivors include two sons, Judson Crowder of Fyffe and Randy Crowder of Clanton;
12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Y. C. Parmer, Tim Sears, Johnny Sanders, L. W. Culbertson,
Buck Norred and Allen Hurst.

William Doss Mitchell
(COLUMBUS, Ga.) William Doss Mitchell, 76, of Columbus, Ga., died Friday,
June 19, 1998, at his home.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary Macon Road
Chapel, with Dr. Brad Hicks officiating. Interment was in Parkhill Cemetery.
Mr. Mitchell was born Sept. 15, 1921, in Roanoke, son of the late William Doss and
Lula Morris Mitchell. He attended the University of Alabama, where he was a member of
Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He was recruited by the late "Bear" Bryant to play baseball
at the college. He was a veteran of World War II, serving three years as a member of the
Navy Sea Bees. He retired from Railway Express agency and was a member of
Wynnbrook Baptist Church, where he served as president of the Don Immel Sunday
School Calss for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Sarah Matthews Mitchell; two daughters, Becky
Bowers and Pamela Lu Batton of Columbus; a twin sister, Carolyn Lane of Roanoke;
two grandsons; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
