OBITUARIES:
William J. 'Billy' Grubbs
(LANETT) William J. "Billy" Grubbs, 78, of Lanett died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005,
at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
Mr. Grubbs was a Chambers County native, born March 26, 1927, son of the late
Hattie White Grubbs and William Monroe Grubbs. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of
World War II and a retired employee of West Point Foundry and Machine Company.
He was an active member of Plant City Baptist Church, which he served as a
deacon for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Euna N. Grubbs; a son, William Phillip Grubbs of
Lanett; four grandsons; two sisters, Annelle Snow of Atlanta and Rachel Boyd of
Roanoke; and a brother, Jack Grubbs of Lanett. He was preceded in death by his
sister, Lorene Carpenter.
Services will be Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m. at Plant City Baptist Church,
with burial in Resthaven Cemetery. The Rev. Allen Mahan will officiate.

Charlie B. Fetner
(ASHLAND) Charlie B. Fetner, 79, of Ashland died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005 at his
residence.
Mr. Fetner was a native of Alabama, born May 27, 1926, son of the late Effie
Ashley Fetner and Franklin Tillman Fetner. He loved gardening and being with his
grandchildren and was a big Auburn fan. He was a member of First Baptist Church
of Valley.
Surviving are his wife, Vondell Fetner; two daughters, Toni Shaddix of Valley
and Terria Slade of Lanett; three stepchildren, Larry Raughton of Wedowee,
Denise Hardeman of Heflin and Terry Raughton of Ashland; three grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Glenella Hall, Faye Yarbrough and Nellie
Lynn of Valley; and two brothers, George Fetner of Valley and Marvin Fetner of
Opelika.
Services will be Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. at Johnson Brown- Service
Funeral Home Chapel in Valley, with burial in Resthaven Cemetery. The Rev. Zenus
Windsor and the Rev. Wayne Adams will officiate.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to the American
Heart Association.

Ethel Laney Davis
(HUNTSVILLE) Services for Ethel Laney Davis, 97, of Huntsville, formerly of
Alexander City, were Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, at 3 p.m. at the Latham United
Methodist Church in Huntsville. Dr. Hughey Reynolds officiated. Burial services
will be Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 3 p.m. at Darian Cemetery in Daviston.
Mrs. Davis died Saturday, Sept. 3, at Cogburn Rehabilitation Center in
Huntsville. She was born July 24, 1908, in Daviston to Jasper Lafayette Laney
and Jennie Burks Laney. She spent the early part of her life there and graduated
from Daviston High School. She married Homer Bentley Welsh and resided for many
years in Alexander City and retired from Russell Corp. Later she married W.
Crawford Davis and lived in Abanda. For the past 13 years, Mrs. Davis has
resided with her daughter in Huntsville. She is one of four members of Darian
Primitive Baptist Church and attended Latham United Methodist Church with her
family in Huntsville. She enjoyed gardening and sewing. Her favorite pasttime
since she was a young girl was making tatting for her family and friends. She
was always busy with her hands.
She is survived by her daughter Janett W. Bevis of Huntsville; a
granddaughter; two great-granddaughters; and one brother, Willis E. Laney. She
was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and two brothers, Amos W. Laney
and Hollis R. Laney.

Clyde Welborn Smith
(NEWNAN, Ga.) Mrs. Clyde Welborn Smith, 92, of Newnan, Ga., formerly of
LaGrange, Ga., died Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at Dogwood Health and Rehabilitation
Center in Fairburn, Ga.
Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 18, 1912, in Randolph County, Ala., and was the
daughter of the late Warner Jackson and Fannie Mary Frances Hester Heard. She
was retired from West Point Pepperell Manufacturing Company Newnan Plant and was
a member of the East LaGrange Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Henson of Newnan; six grandchildren,
12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evie
Barras of New Iberia, La., and Lura Anderson of LaGrange; a brother, Handley
Heard of LaGrange; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by
her husbands, C.L. Welborn and James Smith; a daughter, Shirley Holdaway; and a
son, Jerry Welborn.
Services for Mrs. Smith were at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, at East LaGrange
Baptist Church with the Rev. Josh Forbus officiating. Interment was at

Loette Owens Orange
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Loette Owens Orange, 89, of LaGrange, Ga., died Thursday,
Sept. 1, 2005, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
Mrs. Orange was born Dec. 6, 1915, in Rock Mills, daughter of the late Luther
C. Owens and Lela Burgess Owens. She worked in the cotton mills for more than 72
years and was a member of the Callaway 26-Year Club and had only recently
retired from Kleentex Industries at the age of 83. Mrs. Orange was a member of
Stovall Baptist Church and was pre-ceded in death by her husband, Theodore
Orange; a daughter, Lela Faye Orange; and two brothers, Clifford Owens and Jesse
C. Owens.
Survivors include a daughter, Emma Lee "Jo" Goddard of LaGrange; two
grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and three step-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews.
Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at the chapel of Striffler-Hamby
Mortuary with the Rev. S. W. Osborn officiating. Burial followed in
Shadowlawn Cemetery.

Josephine S. Murray
(HEFLIN) Graveside services for Josephine S. Murray, 89, of Heflin were
Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Pinetucky Baptist Church Cemetery, with
the Rev. John D. Collins and the Rev. Keith Raisanen officiating.
Mrs. Murray died Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical
Center, Anniston.
Mrs. Murray is survived by two daughters, Janet Nelson and Shelia Loomis of
Heflin; one stepdaughter, Jeran Foster; two sons, John Porteous and Tim Porteous
of Heflin; 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; five great-great-
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Tim Loomis, Tim Porteous, Bob Porteous, Joey Porteous, Bob
Eagleston and Doug Porteous.
Mrs. Murray was born Jan. 2, 1916, daughter of Fred and Caroline Bock Kruger.
She was of the protestant faith and a housewife. Mrs. Murray was preceded in
death by her husband, Jerry J. Murray; one son, George Dean Porteous Jr.; one
grandson, John J. Porteous Jr.; and one great-grandson, Joseph L. Craig.

Marshall Blake Bates
(WOODLAND) Services for Marshall Blake Bates, 66, of Woodland were Saturday,
Sept. 3, 2005, at 1 p.m. at Ava United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard

Mr. Bates died Wednesday, Aug. 31, at his residence.
Mr. Bates is survived by his wife, Rae Duryee Bates of Woodland; two
daughters, Deborah Heckenberger of North Hampton, Pa., and Lisa Vanderbeck of
Whitehall, Pa.; one son, Scott Bates of Villa Rica, Ga.; two brothers, Wallace
Bates of Monticello, Ala., and John Bates of Longview, Wash.; and five
grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Luke Heckenberger, Tim Legath, Mike Bates, Jeff Bates, Bart
Evans, Ben Evans, David Codrea, Leslie Legath, Kate Codrea and Elissa Codrea.
Mr. Bates was born Feb. 12, 1939, son of Offard and Myrtis Heard Bates. He
was a member of Ava United Methodist Church and owned and operated a trucking
firm. Mr. Bates was preceded in death by his parents; one grandchild, Mark
Heckenberger; and one brother, Harold Bates. Flowers will be accepted or

Aubrey Clinton Bailey
(ROANOKE) Services for Aubrey Clinton Bailey, 76, of Roanoke were Friday,
Sept. 2, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard
Baldwin and the Rev. Keith Benefield officiating. Burial followed at Randolph
Memory Gardens.
Mr. Bailey died Wednesday, Aug. 31, at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Emma Jean Young Bailey of Roanoke; one daughter,
Barbara Baldwin of Roanoke; one son, Larry Bailey of Roanoke; three sisters,
Willie Pearl Bonner, Annette Shirey and Mary Faye Prather of Rock Mills; four
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Chris Stallings, Nance Bishop, Tommy Rushton, Darrell Hogan,
Craig Baldwin, Wallace Burson, Frank Roberts and Herman Howard.
A Randolph County resident for most of his life, Mr. Bailey was born in
LaGrange, Ga., on May 30, 1929, son of Jim and Dovie Cordellia Hall Bailey. He
was a World War II veteran, a member of Rock Mills Church of God and had been
employed with Wehadkee Yarn Mills.

Eddie B. Slay
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Eddie B. Slay, 89, of LaGrange, Ga., died Friday, Aug. 26,
2005, at Hospice LaGrange.
Mr. Slay, son of the late Albert and Beatrice Slay, was born Jan. 5, 1916, in
Chambers County. He joined New Harmony Baptist Church in 1932. After moving to
Atlanta, he joined Beulah Baptist Church. During his service, he was a member of
the Young-N-Heart Club. Having served in the U.S. Army, he was a World War II
veteran.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Sallie R. Slay of LaGrange; three
daughters, Beatrice Green and Brenda Woodley of Decatur, Ga., and Mary Alice
Paige of Central Island, N.Y.; three sons, Bobby Slay and Ervin Bennett Slay of
Cleveland, Ohio, and Jerome Slay of LaGrange; a nephew, Wilson Gilder, who was a
blessing to Mr. Slay during his time of illness; six grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Eunice Trammell and
Alice Gilder; and two brothers, Albert Slay Jr. and Earl Slay.
Services were Saturday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m. CDT at New Harmony Baptist Church,
Roanoke. The Rev. Jerome Trammell officiated, and burial was in the church

Ruby Nell Boggs Madden
(LAFAYETTE) Ruby Nell Boggs Madden, 91, of LaFayette died Monday, Sept. 5,
2005, at LaFayette Nursing Home. Mrs. Madden was born in Rock Mills on June 30,
1914, daughter of the late Joseph Brently Breed Boggs and William Hudson Boggs.
She was a homemaker and assited [assisted]her father, who was a well-known
potter in Alabama. She was a member of Highway Methodist Church in Randolph
County.
Survivors include two daughters, Martha Jo Hubbard of Opelika and Betty Ann
Null of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sons, James T. Madden of Pembroke Pines, Fla.,
and Winfred Madden of Opelika; two sisters, Dorothy Boggs and Doris Moon of Lake
Charles, La.; nine grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in
death by her husband, James Thomas Madden, and a daughter, Sandra Annette
Avooske.
Services will be at Highway Methodist Church on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 2 p.m.
Burial will be in Potash Ridge Cemetery. The Rev. Vernon Willis will officiate.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. (EDT) at

James Milton Moon
(ROANOKE) Services for James Milton Moon, 74, of Roanoke will be Wednesday,
Sept. 7, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Gary
Baugh and Ricky Daniel officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memory
Gardens.
Mr. Moon died Monday, Sept. 5, at Wedowee Hospital.
Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Mitchell of Roanoke; one
granddaughter; three sisters, Curtis Noles of Roanoke, Shirley Youngblood of
Troy, and Mary Williams of Uvalda, Ga.; and three brothers, Travis Moon of
Roanoke, Hugh Moon of Woodland and Malcolm Moon of Union Springs.
Pallbearers will be Quattlebaum and Benefield Funeral Home staff members.
Mr. Moon was born April 9, 1931, son of James Martin and Hattie Lou Brown
Moon. He was a member of North Main Congregational Church of Christ and retired
as a funeral director for Quattlebaum Funeral Home after 55 years of service.
Mr. Moon was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Brown Moon.

Five Points Cemetery.
Mrs. Monteil died Wednesday, Aug. 31, at her home. Pallbearers were Robert

She is survived by her husband, Fred H. Monteil Sr. of Five Points; two
daughters, Janett Henderson Parmer and Janell Henderson Whaley of Roanoke; one
son, Terry J. Henderson of Ashland; four stepdaughters, Mary Lynne Bublitz of
Bella Vista, Ark., Sharon Aring of Smithville, Mo., Helen Betts of Five Points
and Johannah Johnson of Platte City, Mo.; two stepsons, Fred Monteil Jr. of
Longmont, Col., and Bill Monteil of Platte City, Mo.; one sister, Stell Chewning
of Cusseta; a close companion and dear friend, Frances Heard of Five Points;
four grandchildren; 21 step-grandchildren and 24 step-great-grandchildren.
A lifelong Chambers County resident, Mrs. Monteil was born July 28, 1921,
daughter of Major Dowdle and Elizabeth Louise Tomlinson Brown. She was a
member of Five Points United Methodist Church and had been employed with the
Chambers County Probate Judge's office.

Steven Beach
(LANETT) Steven Beach, 47, of Lanett died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, in Lanett.
Mr. Beach was born in Miami, Fla., on July 20, 1958, son of Eva Beach and the
late Robert Lee Beach Sr. He liked cars and enjoyed reading and music.
Surviving are a son, Michael Beach of Lanett; a daughter, Candice Beach of
Roanoke; four brothers, Robert Beach Jr., Thomas Beach, James Beach and Joseph
Beach of Lanett; his mother, Eva Beach of Lanett; and one grandson. He was
preceded in death by his father and a brother, David Beach.
Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Hillcrest
Cemetery.

Sara Ellen Burdette Prather
(ROANOKE) Sara Ellen Burdette Prather, 89, of Roanoke, formerly of Valley,
died Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
Mrs. Prather was born July 5, 1916, in Chambers County, daughter of the late
Ada Vashti Floyd Burdette and William Henry Burdette. She was a retired employee
of West Point Pepperell's Fairfax Mill with more than 40 years of service. She
also served as a volunteer Pink Lady at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in
Valley for over 12 years. She was a member of Fairfax First Christian Church.
Surviving are six nieces, including Mattie Ruth Royston of Roanoke; and five
nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rupert Prather.
Services will be at Fairfax First Christian Church at 3 p.m. Eastern on
Wednesday, Sept. 14, with burial in Fairfax Cemetery. The Rev. Danny Spear and
the Rev. Anthony Herring will officiate.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to Fairfax First
Christian Church.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m.

(ROCK MILLS) Services for Willie Pearl Bonner, 78, of Rock Mills were

Mrs. Bonner died Sunday, Sept. 11, at her home.

Rock Mills; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A lifelong Roanoke resident, Mrs. Bonner was born Nov. 4, 1926, in Troup
County, Ga., daughter of Jim Dovie Cordelia Hall Bailey. She was a member of
Rock Mills First Baptist Church and had been employed with Amoco Fabrics. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo Bonner.

Lula Mae McCollough
(ROANOKE) Services for Lula Mae McCollough, 83, of Roanoke were Thursday,
Sept. 8, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Tim

Memory Gardens.
Mrs. McCollough died Monday, Sept. 5, at her daughter's home in Auburn.
Survivors include two daughters, Bobbie Huey of Auburn and Glenda Harper of
Roanoke; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were D.C. Parmer, David Whitley, Doug Brown, Mark Jackson, Billy

Mrs. McCollough was born Jan. 3, 1922, daughter of Jeff Thomas and Lula Maude
Snyder Parmer. She was of the Church of God faith and had been a sales clerk for
Belk's, B&G and Ten Toes. Mrs. McCollough was preceded in death by her husband,
Robert John McCollough.

Eula B. Smith
(FITZGERALD, Ga.) Eula B. Smith, 78, of Fitzgerald, Ga., died Saturday,
Sept. 10, 2005 at Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel,
Fitzgerald with the Revs. John Forbes and Robbie McDearmid officiating.
Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 until 9
p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Smith was born March 1, 1927 in Randolph County, one of ten children of
the late Lee Hoyt and Lola Becky Runnels Spradlin. She had lived in Ben Hill and
Irwin counties in Georgia most of her life. She was a homemaker and former
nurse's aide at Colony Home and Life Care Center. She was a member of Westside
Baptist Church.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her 10 children, Thomas Ray Reaves of Waynesville,
Ga., Vicki C. Branam of Brunswick, Ga., Virginia Wright of Ocilla, Ga., and
Bobby Joe Wiggins, Glenda Giddens, Gene H. Reaves, Gelene Spradlin, Betty
Spradllin, Buck Reaves and Bud Reaves, all of Fitzgerald; 35 grandchildren; 57
great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Jane
Holloway of Randolph County. She was preceded in death by her two husbands,
Thomas Damon Reaves and Grady W. Smith.

friend and caregiver, Emma Wilson of Roanoke.

seamstress. Mrs. Cofield was preceded in death by her husband, R.C. Cofield; and
one daughter, Carrie Jean Sikes. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be

the church cemetery.
Survivors include a son, Charlie E. Jones of Roanoke; four daughters,
Shirlene Hernandez of Detroit, Mich., Annye Carlisle and Daisie Hall of Roanoke,
and Mozell McCollough of Kennesaw, Ga.; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-
grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
her husband, David Jones; a son, Willie Rodger Broom; a daughter, Emma Winston;
two brothers, Charlie Smith and Jim Smith; and a sister, Mary Boyd.
Public viewing will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke, from 10
a.m. until 6 p.m. on Thursday. The body will be placed in the church one hour
before services.

(MARYVILLE, Tenn.) Tommy Hugh Burks, 74, of Maryville, Tenn., died Tuesday,

Mr. Burks was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Lee and Charlsie
Burks. Survivors include his wife, Lorene H. Burks; two sons, Sidney Burks of
LaFayette, La., and Scott Burks of St. Cloud, Fla.; a daughter, Sharon Ray of
Mountain Lakes, N.J.; and nine grandchildren.
Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, in the Trinity Chapel of Smith
Mortuary, Maryville. Interment followed in Grandview Cemetery.

Charlie 'Cecil' Ford Rice
(ANNISTON) A memorial service for Charlie "Cecil" Ford Rice, 74, of Anniston
will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, at Parker Memorial Baptist Church in
the Christian Life Center with Dr. Billy Harris officiating. Visitation will be
from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Fireside Room.
Mr. Rice died Wednesday, Sept. 7, at his home.
Mr. Rice was the beloved husband of the late, Eloise Haynes Rice of Woodland
and is survived by three sons, Charles Haston Rice of Anniston and Dewey Alan
Rice and Tracy Haynes Rice of Oxford; three granddaughters; three daughters-in-
law; two brothers, Albert Rice of Ozark and George "Junior" Rice of Claxton,
Ga.; and two sisters, Mary Clyde Ussrey [Ussery] and Opal Waldrop of Roanoke. He
was preceded in death by his parents George Dewey and Evie Morris Rice of Wadley
and a sister, Fannie Burke of Roanoke.
Mr. Rice was born and raised in Randolph County. He was a Korean War veteran
and a graduate of Auburn University (API). He owned and operated Rice Pest
Control Company until his retirement in 1993. He was a past president of the
Anniston Lions Club and Alabama Pest Control Association. He was a member of the
Baracca Sunday School Class at Parker Memorial Baptist Church for many years.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to New Beacon Hospice or
for Hurricane Katrina relief.

Pierce Albert Nichols
(ROME, Ga.) Pierce Albert Nichols, 86, of Rome, Ga., died at a local hospital
Saturday morning, Sept. 10, 2005 of stroke-related illnesses.
Mr. Nichols was born Sept. 11, 1918 in Woodland, son of the late Robert and
Pearlie Crosson Nicols of Wedowee. He was married to the late Irene Whitmore
Nichols on Dec. 25, 1939. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lillie May
Nichols Hester of Wedowee; and a brother, James Nichols of Anniston.
Mr. Nichols served in the U.S. Air Force as a medic in the Philippines from
Jan. 1943 to Jan. 4, 1946. He was awarded the Philippines Liberation Ribbon,
Good Conduct Medal, a Bronze Star, and a WWII Victory Seal. He worked for 38
years at Standard Printing Co. in Columbus, Ga. He was a member and faithful
servant at Morningside Baptist Church in Columbus since 1952. He worked in the
Training Union with children and served as head usher as well as visitation
programs in the church.
Survivors include two sisters, Margie Ruth Nichols Vernon of Ft. Worth,
Texas; and Resa Faye Nichols Guy of Newnan, Ga. A number of nieces and nephews
also survive.
Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m., central time, at
Providence Baptist Church in Woodland, with the Rev. David Daniel officiating.
Mr. Nichols will lie-in-state and the family will receive friends at the church
from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour. Interment will follow in the church
cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bradley Landreau, Junior Whitmore, Chad Whitmore, Wes
Wilson, Mike Hester and Amy Ajukwara.

(ATLANTA) Lillie Mae Thornton, 84, of Atlanta, a native of Roanoke, died
Friday, Sept. 16, 2005, at Atlanta Hospice.
Services will be Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m. CDT at Wehadkee Missionary
Baptist Church, Roanoke, with the Revs. Elijah Jackson Jr., Robert L. Heflin,
Myris L. Bell and L.B. Houston officiating. Burial will be in the church

Willie Mae Melton
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Willie Mae Melton, 89, of LaGrange, Ga., died Sunday, Sept.
18, 2005, at Brian Center Nursing Care.
Mrs. Melton was born May 29, 1916, in Randolph County, Ala., daughter of the
late John Clyde and Frances Cummings Siggers. She retired in 1981 from West
Point Stevens and after her retirement, worked as a senior companion with West
Georgia Health Systems until 2003. She was a member of East Vernon Baptist
Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Hazel Miller of Savannah, Ga., Betty M.
Phillips of Greensboro, N.C. and Voncille Matthews of LaGrange; five
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two
sisters, Lou L. Davis of Trussville and Ioan Greene of Roanoke; one brother,
J.C. Siggers Jr. of Danville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Alvin L. Melton, and a brother, James Siggers.
Services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Hunter-Allen-Myhand chapel with the
Rev. Clayton Scott officiating. Interment was in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke.

(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Mr. Kelly L. Tumlin, 83, of LaGrange, Ga., died Monday, Sept.

Mr. Tumlin was born July 31, 1922, in Randolph County, Ala., son of the late
Robert and Lou Annie Armstrong Tumlin. He had lived in LaGrange most of his life
and was a member of Teaver Road Baptist Church. Mr. Tumlin was retired from
Milliken and Company, Kex Plant. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gracie M.
Sears Tumlin, and by a son, Tony L. Tumlin.
Survivors include two daughters, Diane Nobley and Brenda Starling of
LaGrange; two brothers, Frank Tumlin of Villa Rica, Ga., and Jack Tumlin of
LaGrange; 13 grand-children; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and

11 a.m., with the Rev. James Abernathy officiating. Burial was in Union Hill
Cemetery.
Mr. Milstead was a native of Clay County, born Dec. 28, 1946, and a resident
of Randolph County since 1978. He was a U.S Army veteran and Methodist by faith.
He was a member of the planning board at Gadsden State Community College, Ayers
Campus, and was employed as shop foreman at L.E. Bell Construction Company since
1986.

Mrs. McCain died Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical
Center, Anniston.
Mrs. McCain is survived by three daughters, Arbie Frances Wilder of Oxford
and Dorothy Faye Simpson and Gearlene "Jerri" Southerland of Wedowee; three
sons, Howard McCain Jr., Nelson McCain and Don McCain of Wedowee; three sisters,
Ann Kerr of Huntsville, Mavis McCain of Wedowee and Betty Stewart of Bowdon,
Ga.; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great-child.
Pallbearers were her grandsons.
Mrs. McCain was born Nov. 14, 1919, daughter of Lon and Lee Norred Nelson.
She was a member of Caver's Grove Congregational Christian Church and a
homemaker. Mrs. McCain was preceded in death by her husband, Howard McCain Sr.,
her parents and nine brothers.

Bettye Herron Anglin
(LAFAYETTE) Bettye Herron Anglin, 79, of LaFayette died Monday, Sept. 26,
2005, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
Services will be at LaFayette First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Wednesday,
Sept. 28, with interment in LaFayette City Cemetery. The Rev. Bill Hand and the
Rev. Charles Whitson will officiate.
Surviving are her husband, Jim Anglin of LaFayette; one daughter, Rita Gauntt
of LaFayette; three sons, Mike Sims and Dennis Anglin of LaFayette and John
Anglin of Washington, D.C.; five grandsons; and nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Herron, David Denton, Steve Kelly, Adam Young, Ken
Moore and Jason Herron.
Mrs. Anglin was born June 1, 1926, in Thomaston, Ga. She was retired from
the Chambers County Extension Service after 31 years of service and from Farmers
& Merchants Bank in LaFayette after 10 years of service. She was a member of
First Baptist Church of LaFayette.

John Richard Brookshire
(ROANOKE) Services for John Richard Brookshire, 61, of Roanoke were Sunday,
Sep 25, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. John Mann
officiating. Burial followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mr. Brookshire died Wednesday, Sept. 21. at East Alabama Medical Center,
Opelika.
Survivors include his mother, Clarice Wright Brookshire of Roanoke; and one
sister, Anna Claire Brookshire.
Honorary pallbearers were the Men's Sunday School Class of Roanoke First
United Methodist Church.
Mr. Brookshire was born Oct. 29, 1943, son of Jones Branson and Clarice
Wright Brookshire. He was retired from the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam
War. He was an active member of the Rotary Club and teacher of the First
Methodist Men's Sunday School Class. Mr. Brookshire was preceded in death by his
father, J. B. Brookshire; and one brother, Roger Brookshire. Flowers will be
accepted.

Samuel Loyce Harris
(ROANOKE) Services for Samuel Loyce Harris, 90, of Roanoke were Friday, Sept.
23, 2005, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. William Dean officiating.
Burial followed at Cedarwood Cemetery.
Mr. Harris died Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Traylor Nursing Home.
Survivors include his wife, Amelia Lopez Harris; one daughter, Joy Harris of
Roanoke; and one brother, Walker Harris of Covington, Ga.
Pallbearers were Frank Fetner, David Stephens, Steve Spratlin, Ken Morrison,
Gerald Romine and David Denton. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of First
Baptist Church.
Mr. Harris was born March 31, 1915, son of James Samuel and Nora Kitchens
Harris. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Roanoke, served in
the U.S. Army during World War II and had been part owner and pharmacist of City
Pharmacy in Roanoke. Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his wife, Mari Wyle
Greene.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Baptist
Church of Roanoke.

J.W. Albright
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) J.W. Albright, 83, of LaGrange, Ga., died Wednesday, Sept.
21, 2005, at Florence Hand Home. Mr. A1bright was born May 21, 1920, in Randolph
County, Ala., and was the son of the late George and Frances Butler Albright. He
was a salesman for Sears Roebuck and Company and also co-owner of Albright
Wholesale Pottery. He was a member of First Baptist Church on the Square, where
he was a member of Pilot Williams Sunday School Class. He was a graduate of
Woodland High School and attended Perry Business School.
Survivors include his wife, Marie P. Albright of LaGrange; a daughter, Terri
Wilkie of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two grandsons and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11. a.m. Friday in Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel with the
Dr. Paul R. Baxter and the Rev. Paul Blair officiating. Burial will be in
Shadowlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6
to 8 on Thursday.

Wiley J. Richardson
(DADEVILLE) Services for Wiley J. Richardson, 82, of Dadeville were
Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel
in Valley with burial in Shawmut Cemetery. Bro. James Cullins and Bro. Frank
Lyons officiated.
Mr. Richardson died Wednesday morning, Sept. 21, at Bethany House in Auburn.
He is survived by his wife, Lether Brown Richardson; one daughter, Brenda
Richardson Siggers of Dadeville; three sisters, Flossie Craft of Roanoke and
Jeanette Sims and Becky Hollis of Cusseta; two brothers, John Richardson of
Lanett and Herbert Richardson of Cusseta; five grandchildren, 15 great-
grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by
his son, Wiley J. Richardson, Jr.
Born in Langdale on Jan. 1, 1923, Mr. Richardson was the son of the late
Augusta Sudduth Richardson and Newton Richardson. He was a retired employee of
West Point Stevens, with 49 years of service at Shawmut Mill. He was of the
Church of Christ faith.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to a favorite charity in
his memory.
