OBITUARIES:
Junior Keeble
(ROANOKE) Graveside services for Junior Keeble, age 73, of Roanoke were Sunday,
July 2, 1995, at 2 p.m. from Cedarwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Harold Bonner
officiating.
Mr. Keeble died Friday, June 30, at his home.
A Randolph County native, Mr. Keeble was born Aug. 13, 1921, son of Pierce Keeble,
Sr., and Willie Hodges Keeble. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and had
worked as a meat cutter.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Smith Keeble of Roanoke; two daughters, Pat K.
Carvalho of Marietta, Ga., and Carol McCormack of Lineville; a brother, Ernest T. Keeble
of Lakeland, Fla.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Chattahoochee
Hospice, 604 Cusseta Road, Valley, AL 36854.
Pallbearers were Jackie Keeble, Danny Smith, Paul Heard, Frank Fetner, Olin
Armatage and Jim Aton.

Robert V. Bob' Manuel
(NEWELL) Robert V. Bob Manuel, age 59, of Rt. 1, Newell, died Friday, June 30,
1995, at his residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 2, in Benefield Funeral Home Chapel, the
Revs. Frank Stark and Charlie Bolt officiating. Burial was in Jena City Cemetery, Jena,
La., with graveside services there at 3 p.m. Monday, July 3.
Mr. Manuel is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Greene Manuel of Newell; one
daughter, Mrs. Jo Ann Smith of Ft. Worth, Tex.; one brother, E. L. Jack Manuel of
Florence, Ala.; [and] one granddaughter, Jennifer LeAnn Farley of Ft. Worth, Tex.
Mr. Manuel was a native of Appalachia, Va., born on Nov. 8, 1935 to Robert V.
Manuel Sr. and Annie Mae Mann Manuel. He was a merchant and mover of mobile homes
and was a member of First Apostolic Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Meridian, Miss.
Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, was in charge of arrangements.

Sam Thrower
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Dr. Sam Thrower, 69, of LaGrange, Ga., died Sunday afternoon
at West Georgia Medical Center following several months of illness.
Dr. Thrower was born Nov. 9, 1925, in Lanett, a son of the late S. E. and Mary Irene
Hayes Thrower. He had made his home in LaGrange for the past 47 years. He was a
member and elder of Loyd Presbyterian Church and was a graduate of Auburn University
in veterinary medicine.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Pearce Thrower of LaGrange; three daughters,
Diane Haines of LaGrange and Kathy Golden and Beth Etheridge of Kennesaw, Ga.; one
son, Sam Thrower, Jr., of LaGrange; a sister, Mrs. Betty Thrower Freeman of Stone
Mountain, Ga.; and six grandchildren.
Graveside services were Tuesday, July 4, at 11 a.m. in Shadowlawn Cemetery, with the
Rev. Foster Edwards and Mr. Mike Malis officiating.
Donations may be made to the Loyd Presbyterian Church building fund in memory of
Dr. Thrower.

Lottie S. Richardson
(HOGANSVILLE, Ga.) Lottie Shaw Richardson, 80, of Hogansville, Ga., died
Thursday, June 29, 1995, at Franklin Healthcare Center in Franklin, Ga.
The funeral service was conducted Saturday afternoon, July 1, in the chapel of Claude
A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Johnny Williamson and
the Rev. Luther Raines officiated. Interment was in Potash Church of God Cemetery in
Randolph County, Ala.
Pallbearers were John Carlis Gaddy, Alan Shaw, Steve Shaw, Tony Shaw, Lee Bailey,
Stanley Shaw, and Sammy Hammond.
Mrs. Richardson was born Feb. 7, 1915, in Randolph County, daughter of the late
Milton and Etta Henson Hammond. She lived in Hogansville most of her life and was a
member of Hogansville Church of God.
Survivors include her husband, Henry Richardson; five daughters, Mrs. Joyce
Hammond of Duncan, S.C., Mrs. Jeanette Bailey of LaGrange, Mrs. Myrtle Crenshaw of
Roanoke, and Mrs. Peggy Barrett and Mrs. Frances Gaddy of Hogansville; five sons,
Curtis Shaw of Franklin, Loy Shaw and Billy Shaw of LaGrange, Floyd Shaw of
Luthersville, Ga., and J. D. Shaw of Clanton, Ala.; six sisters, Mrs. Katie Pike of
Roanoke, Mrs. Mary Will Waits of Calhoun, Ga., Mrs. Hazel Garrett of Leitchield, Ky.,
Mrs. Lois Anderson of Summerville, Ga., Mrs. Clois Hicks of Daytona Beach, Fla., and
Mrs. Gladys Mazzalla of Woodstock, Ga.; four brothers, Elize Hammond of Dalton, Ga.,
George Hammond of Trion, Ga., Earl Hammond of Pensacola, Fla., and Merle Hammond
of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 28 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-
grandchildren.

Daisy Isarell Williamson
(ANNISTON) Daisy Isarell Williamson, 93, of Anniston died Monday, July 2, 1995,
at Golden Springs Health Care Center in Anniston.
Mrs. Williamson was born Dec. 26, 1901, in Randolph County, daughter of Smiley
Barto Crews and Mattie Ellen Reaves Crews. She lived for more than 60 years in
Talladega, where she was a member of Tall Creek Baptist Church and was retired from
the Bemis textile plant. She had lived in Anniston since 1988.
Survivors include three sisters, Lottie Mae Cofield of Newell, Naomi C. Bradley of
Wedowee and Sarah Elizabeth Stewart of Talladega; one brother, Woodrow B. Crews
of Wedowee; and several nieces and nephews.
Services for Mrs. Williamson were Tuesday, July 2, at 2 p.m. from Usrey Chapel in
Anniston. Interment was in the cemetery of Union Baptist Church at Morrison's
Crossroads in Randolph County.
Pallbearers were nephews of Mrs. Williamson.
Arrangements were by Usrey Brown-Service, Anniston.

Eris Fincher
(WEDOWEE) Eris Fincher, 91, of Wedowee died Tuesday, July 4, 1995, at Traylor
Nursing Home, Roanoke, after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, July 6, at First Baptist Church,
Wedowee, with the Rev. John Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in the Wedowee
Masonic Cemetery.
Ms. Fincher is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be deacons of First Baptist Church of Wedowee.
Ms. Fincher was born in Randolph County on Sept. 24, 1903, to Thomas Gaines
Fincher and Littie Tomlinson Fincher. She was a teacher in the Randolph County School
System for 48 years before retirement. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Retired
Teachers Association, Women's Missionary Union and Wedowee Homemakers Club.
Ms. Fincher will lie in state at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, and the family will
receive friends after 5 p.m., Wednesday, July 5, until one hour prior to funeral services.
She will lie in state at the church for one hour.

Ann McGuire
(ALBANY, Ga.) Ann McGuire, 63, of Albany, died Monday at HCA Palmyra Medical
Centers.
The funeral service will be Wednesday, July 5, at 2 p.m. EST [sic - EDT] in Albany
with interment services Thursday at 2 p.m. CST [sic - CDT] at Zion Baptist Church
Cemetery in Woodland. The Revs. Michael Catt and Tony Haefs will officiate in Albany,
and the Rev. Max New will officiate in Woodland.
A native of Woodland, Mrs. McGuire had lived in Albany since 1968. She was a
member of Sherwood Baptist Church and had formerly worked as an auditor with both
Delta Airlines and WSB TV in Atlanta.
Survivors include her husband, Bob A. McGuire of Albany; a son, Phillip D. McGuire
of Albany, and a brother, Guy Traylor of Woodland.
Kimbrell-Stern Funeral Directors of Albany is in charge of arrangements.

Susan Inez Kaylor Holliday
(CARROLLTON, Ga.) Susan Inez Kaylor Holliday, 89, of Carrollton, a former
resident of Graham, Ala., died Tuesday, June 27, 1995 at Tanner Medical Center/
Carrollton following an extended illness.
Mrs. Holliday was born in Carroll County, Ga., Sept. 12, 1905, daughter of the late
Holly Herbert and Annie Elizabeth Lovvorn Holliday. A lifelong resident of this area, she
was a member of Bethlehem Campground United Methodist Church in Graham and of the
Eastern Star in Carrollton and was a retired insurance policy writer with West Georgia
Insurance Co.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Holliday, Sep. 7, 1984, and
by five sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Thursday, June 29, at 2 p.m. EDT from Bethlehem Campground
United Methodist Church, the Revs. W. M. Wiggins and Tommy Willingham officiating.
Music was furnished by Anita Craven and the church choir. The Rev. John Hassell was in
charge of graveside services in the church cemetery.
Rainwater-West Funeral Home, Bowdon, Ga., was in charge of the arrangements.

Fannie L. Henderson
(WOODLAND) Fannie L. Henderson, 82, of Rt. 2, Woodland, died Thursday, July 6,
1995, at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at Providence Baptist Church, with
the Rev. Carolyn Hanner and the Rev. Tony Morris officiating. Burial was in the adjoining
cemetery.
Mrs. Henderson is survived by two daughters, Brenice Butler and Renice Tanksley of
Woodland; four sons, Bobby Joe Henderson of Moreland, Ga., and Loice Henderson,
L. C. Henderson and Jimmy Henderson of Woodland; 13 grandchildren, two step-
grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Jeffery Henderson, Ray Henderson, Johnthan Henderson, Steve
Butler, Jarrod Carter, Joey Kellum and Tim Henderson.
Mrs. Henderson was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was born
to Hill Benjamin Brown and Savana Brown on Sept. 15, 1913. She was a homemaker and
a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Lois Norred Gilliland
(FOREST PARK, Ga.) Funeral services for Lois Norred Gilliland, 82, of Forest Park,
Ga., formerly of Roanoke, were Monday, July 10, 1995, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum
Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Truman Norred and Johnny Brooks officiating. Burial was
at Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke.
Mrs. Gilliland died Friday, July 7, at Southern Regional Medical Center in Riverdale,
Ga.
A Randolph County native, she was born Aug. 12, 1912, daughter of William and
Emily Caroline Young Norred. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and had
retired from work with Avondale Mills in LaFayette.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Gail Cofield of Wedowee and Suzanne G.
Cantrell of Forest Park, Ga.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Lee Stallworth, Chip Cofield, David Cofield, Larry Yarbrough, Jack
Ashmore and Jimmy Young.

(ROANOKE) Funeral services for James Clyde Smith, 80, of Roanoke were
Wednesday, July 5, 1995, at 2 p.m. from Trinity Baptist Church with the Revs. Barry

Mr. Smith died Monday, July 3, at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital in Anniston.
A Clay County native, Mr. Smith was born May 29, 1915, son of George Washington
and Annie Bell Smith. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and had retired from
Handley Mills.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Shaddix Smith of Roanoke; two daughters, Myrna
Longshore of Roanoke and Rhonda S. Byrd of Lanett; a step-son, Johnny Germany of
Dadeville; a sister, Tina Scott of Gulfport, Miss.; four grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren.

Joe Leonard Brewer
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Joe Leonard Brewer, 94, of Roanoke were Monday,

Mr. Brewer died Saturday, July 8, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
A Randolph County native, Mr. Brewer was born July 27, 1900, son of Noah Lee and
Lizzie Bailey Brewer. He was a farmer and a member of White's Chapel Methodist
Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Glennie Hester of Roanoke; two sons, Leonard Gay
Brewer and Johnny R. Brewer, both of Lanett; two sisters, Pearl Pilgrim of LaGrange,
Ga., and Elsie Foster of Standing Rock; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Ruby Vestula Adamson, 83, of Route 2, Roanoke,

Stanley Yarbrough and F. L. Lodford officiating. Burial was at the adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. Adamson died Wednesday, July 5, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
A Cleburne County native, she was born Aug. 6, 1911, daughter of Walter E. and
Luemnia Pike Truitt. She was a member of Bethany Lime Christian Church and was
retired from work at Wehadkee Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. B.
Adamson.
Survivors include three sons, Wayne Adamson, Leroy Adamson and Milam Adamson,
all of Route 2, Roanoke; six brothers, Alford Truitt of Manchester, Ga., and Jack Truitt,
Elbert Truitt, Junior Truitt, Gordon Truitt and Grady Truitt, all of Thomaston, Ga.; eight
grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Dennis Adamson, Chuck Thompson, Scottie Thompson, Willis
Adamson, Tommy Adamson, Tim Arrington and Ben Arrington.

Noah A. Langley
(WOODLAND) Noah A. Langley, 94, of Woodland died Wednesday, July 5, 1995,
at Paulding Memorial Nursing Home, Dallas, Ga., after an extended illness.
Funeral services were Friday, July 7, at 2 p.m. at Napoleon Church of Christ with Bro.
Lynwood Smith, Bro. Ricky Martin and Bro. Terry Studdard officiating. Burial was in the
adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Langley is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Ora Nell Burson and Mrs. Martha
Martin, both of Marietta, Ga., Mrs. Narvelle Duke of Hogansville, Ga., and Mrs. Jacquline
Yates of Dallas; one son, Noah P. Langley of Mableton, Ga.; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-
grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; six sisters, Mrs. Ruthie Hill, Mrs.
Estelle Wilson, Mrs. Mamie Keel , Miss Unie Langley and Mrs. Ellie Mae Bailey, all of
Woodland, and Mrs. Eudell Scott of Temple, Ga.
Pallbearers were grandchildren.
Mr. Langley was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, born Nov. 24,
1900, to Luther Langley and Nora Bowen Langley. He was a farmer, carpenter and
blacksmith and was a member of Napoleon Church of Christ. He had lived in Dallas, Ga.,
for the past six months.
Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, was in charge of arrangements.
The family requests that donations be made to Chattahoochee Hospice Inc. or
Kennestone Regional Hospice.

Tommie Moses Coleman
(MONTGOMERY) Tommie Moses Coleman, 75, died in Montgomery on July 5,
1995, after an extended illness. She had been a dialysis patient since 1986, having retired
from the Montgomery City Parks and Recreation Department in 1983.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at Big Springs Baptist Church with
the Rev. David Daniel and Tommy Joe Swearingen officiating. Burial was in the church
cemetery, White Chapel of Montgomery directing.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Rolan Coleman, and six children, Joanne Shum,
Rhonda Thomason, Dorothy Smith, Sharon Connell, Charles Rolan Coleman Jr. and
Tommie Lee David Coleman; 14 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mamie Davis of
Sylacauga and Mrs. Arnie Griner of Haines City, Fla.
Mrs. Coleman became a member of Big Springs Baptist Church in Randolph County at
the age of 17. She faithfully returned each fourth Sunday in May for the homecoming
activities and also returned to the church each first Sunday in August for the annual
Fincher reunion. She wrote her own funeral service so that she could pass words of
wisdom on to her loved ones one last time.

Evelyn Earnest Moseley
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Evelyn Earnest Moseley, 71, of Roanoke were
Saturday, July 8, 1995, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church with the Revs. Barry Cosper
and S. T. Janney officiating. Burial was at Pineview Cemetery in Wetumpka.
Mrs. Moseley died Thursday, July 6, at Randolph County Hospital.
A former resident of Alexander City and Wetumpka, she was a Glenn, Ga., native,
born Dec. 24, 1923, daughter of Garland and Eura Hoard Earnest. She was a member of
Trinity Baptist Church and had been an LPN employed with Randolph County Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph H. Moseley.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverly K. Clark of Nashville, Tenn.; three sisters, Sarah
Hammond of Fort Wayne, Ind., Bobbie Sue Thomas of Jacksonville, Fla.., and Bettie Jo
Spivey of Knoxville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Al Spivey, Phil Sheppard, Joe Spivey, Albert Spivey, Butch Ruttan
and Mike Bowar.

James Earl Red' Adamson
(WEDOWEE) James Earl Red Adamson, 66, of Wedowee and Weaver died Friday,
July 7, 1995, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 9, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with
the Rev. S. T. Janney officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Adamson is survived by four sisters, Ruth Moore, Erma Key and Evelyn Bradley
of Wedowee and Laverne Dodson of Anniston; six brothers, Willard Adamson of
Concord, N.C., Buford Adamson, Alfred Adamson, Bobby Adamson and Dwayne
Adamson of Wedowee, and Comer Adamson of Niceville, Fla.; and a host of nieces and
nephews.
Pallbearers were members of the Moose Club in Anniston. Honorary pallbearers were
nephews.
Mr. Adamson was a native of Randolph County. He was retired from FMC, and he
was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He had lived in Weaver for a number of years.

(WEDOWEE) The Rev. Douglas Gray, 82, of Wedowee died Sunday, July 9, 1995, in
Wedowee Hospital after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church,
with the Revs. James Cavender, Steve Dempsey and Bobby Burroughs officiating. Burial
will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
The Rev. Mr. Gray is survived by his wife, Mrs. Vicie Gray of Wedowee; three
daughters, Mrs. Martha Nell Mount of Decatur, Mrs. Mailey Ann Langley of Wadley and
Mrs. Carolyn V. Simpson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sons, Bobby Joe Gray of
Georgetown, Ga., and Dolan Gray of Wedowee; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-
grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Lena Holloway of Wedowee, Mrs. Dessie Bolt of Heflin
and Mrs. Rachel Cotton of Marietta, Ga.; and two brothers, Parker Gray of Anniston and
Isaac Gray of Oklahoma City, Okla.
Pallbearers will be Michael Anthony Gray, Bobby Joe Gray Jr., Kenneth Fowler, Kim
Ray Fowler, Johnny P. Fowler, Tommy Dolan Fowler, George Simpson and Josh
Simpson.
The Rev. Mr. Gray was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was
born to Thomas and Drucella Puckett Gray on Feb. 7, 1913. He was retired as a farmer
and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.
He will lie in state at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, and the family will receive
friends until one hour prior to funeral services. He will lie in state at the church for one
hour.

William Edgar Park, 101
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for William Edgar Park, 101, of Roanoke were Friday,
July 14, 1995, at 2 p.m. at Lebanon Christian Church, with the Rev. Hugh Vines
officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Park died Tuesday, July 11, at Traylors Nursing Home in Roanoke.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mr. Park was born June 12, 1894, son of
Alexander Campbell and Emma Pinkard Park. He was a Navy veteran of World War I
and a member of Lebanon Christian Church. For many years he was a dairyman and truck
farmer.
Survivors include his son, Fred Park of [W]est Columbia, S.C., three grandchildren and
six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Bill Park, Larry Park, Eddie Ferrell, Gay Ferrell, Ralph Richardson
and Bill Prince.

Eddie Lou Stone
(WADLEY) Funeral services for Eddie Lou Stone, 88, of Route 2, Wadley, will be
Thursday, July 20, 1995, at 11 a.m. from Almond Methodist Church, with the Rev. David
Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Wadley Cemetery.
Mrs. Stone died Tuesday, July 18, at Clay County Hospital in Ashland.
A Tallapoosa County native, she was born Aug. 25, 1906, daughter of Edmond M. and
Arrie Anne Brooks Nix. She was a former resident of Clay County and had resided in
Randolph County for 55 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Almond
Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Miriam S. Morris of Birmingham and Annette
Hagood Hubbard of Macon, Ga.; one son, James Stone of Pelham; eight grandchildren;

(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Nora Lee Adams, 78, of Roanoke were Thursday,
July 13, 1995, at 3 p.m. from Faith Baptist Church, with the Revs. S. T. Janney and Ricky
Emery officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Adams died Wednesday, July 12, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika
after a short illness.
A Randolph County native, she was born Feb. 27, 1917, daughter of Paul E. and Ollie
Lovvorn Williams. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church and the W.M.U. and had
retired from Handley Mills.
Survivors include a nephew, Wendell Williams of Roanoke; three sisters, Flonnie
Robinson of Roanoke, Pauline Fomby of Columbus, Ga., and Mabell Brooks of
LaGrange, Ga.; five brothers, Charlie Williams, Robert Williams and Harold Williams, all
of Roanoke, Earnest Williams of LaGrange and Merrell Williams of Geraldine; and several
nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Paul Williams, Jimmy Robinson, Thamous Williams, James Weathers,
Wayne Ward and Billy Joe Brooks. Deacons of Faith Baptist Church served as honorary
pallbearers.

(ROANOKE) Funeral services for James Jackson Jack Willoughby, 70, of Roanoke,
formerly of Daviston, were Friday, July 14, 1995, at 3 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral
Chapel, with the Revs. Hugh Vines and Harold Bowen officiating. Burial was at Rocky
Mount Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Daviston.
Mr. Willoughby died Wednesday, July 12, at Randolph County Hospital. A Tallapoosa
County native, he was born June 11, 1925, son of Walter W. and Ovada Whaley
Willoughby. He was a member of Rock Springs Christian Church and had retired from
Lanett Mills.
Survivors include his wife, Hattie Jackson Willoughby of Roanoke; a step-son, Michael
R. Cumbee of Lanett; three sisters, Kathrene Hamlet, Sadie Sherum and Edna Jones, all of
Daviston; and three brothers, Clifford Willoughby and Boyd Willoughby of Daviston and
Eldridge Willoughby of Wadley.
Pallbearers were Clifford Willoughby, Body Willoughby, Eldridge Willoughby, Loyd
Bolt, Steven Willoughby and Mosey Sherum.

(WEDOWEE) Ottis Alvin Shelnutt, 68, of Rt. 2, Wedowee, died Monday, July 17,
1995, at Wedowee Hospital, Wedowee, after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, at Oak Grove Church of Christ,
with the Rev. Rickey Murphy officiating. Burial will follow at the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Shelnutt is survived by three sisters, Irma Boyd of Wedowee, Mary Jo Brocker of
Moncure, N.C., and Ada Hallman of Sylacauga; and seven brothers, Frank Shelnutt of
St. Louis, Mo., Cliff Shelnutt, James Butch Shelnutt and Sammy Shelnutt of Sylacauga,
Grady Shelnutt and Doyle Shelnutt of Wedowee, and Calvin Shelnutt of Birmingham.
Pallbearers will be nephews.
Mr. Shelnutt was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was retired as
a truck driver with Anniston Foundry.
Mr. Shelnutt will lie in state at the church for one hour before services.

Ross Liles
(LANETT) Ross Liles, 87, of Lanett died Friday, July 14, 1995, at East Alabama
Medical Center, Opelika.
Survivors include two daughters, Janice Reardon of Valley and Joyce Lashley of
Lanett; two sisters, Margaret Burton of Camp Hill and Sadie Morris of New Smyrna
Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was at First Christian Church in Lanett on Sunday, July 16, at 3 p.m.
Burial was in Concord Cemetery in Randolph County. The Rev. Rudolph Leak
officiated.
Mr. Liles was born in Abanda on Mar. 5, 1908. He was employed with West Point
Pepperell at the Lanett Bleachery & Dye Works for over 40 years. He was a deacon
emeritus in First Christian Church in Lanett and also an avid gardener. Flowers will be
accepted or memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church in his memory.

Spencer Wayne Wiggins
(BOWDON, Ga.) Spencer Wayne Wiggins, 30, of Bowdon died Tuesday, July 11,
1995, in University of Alabama Medical Center, Birmingham, from injuries sustained in an
accident.
He was born in Carroll County, Ga., May 23, 1965, the son of Wayne Monroe and
Mildred Rushton Wiggins. Spencer was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of Sardis
Baptist Church and an employee of Diamond K.
Survivors include his parents, Wayne Monroe and Mildred Wiggins of Bowdon; two
brothers, Alan Wiggins and Michael Wiggins of Bowdon; a sister, Mrs. Kim Young of
Woodland; his paternal grandparents, the Rev. and Mrs. Louis Wiggins of Bowdon; and
his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Louise Ellison of Hampton, Ga.
Funeral services were Wednesday, July 12, at 3 p.m. at Sardis Baptist Church, with the
Rev. W. M. Wiggins, the Rev. Darnell Teal and the Rev. Steve Dempsey officiating. Music was
by the church choir under the direction of Mrs. Vera Laney. Pallbearers were Chris Clines,
Donny Wiggins, Richard Spruill, Mike Cook, Lander Williams and Kenney Ellis. Interment
services followed in the church cemetery.

(WOODLAND) Funeral services for Evie Lou Madden, 64, of Rt. 2, Woodland, will

Miss Madden died Tuesday, July 18, at her home.
A Heard County, Ga., native, Miss Madden was born Aug. 16, 1930, daughter of Loyd
and Mattie Spears Madden. She was a member of Highway Congregational Methodist
Church and had worked with LaMar Manufacturing.
Survivors include her parents, Loyd and Mattie Madden of Woodland; two sisters,
Dean Holloway and Allie Ruth Brown, both of Woodland; three brothers, Charlie T.
Madden and Ernest Madden of Woodland and Cecil Madden of Roanoke.

(LANETT) Gilbert Miles, 83, of Lanett died Wednesday, July 12, 1995, in East
Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.

Winder, Ga.; two sons, James R. Miles of Valley and Stanley Miles of Sherman, Texas;
three brothers, Jack Miles of Wedowee, Frank Miles of Standing Rock and Collie Miles
of LaGrange, Ga.; one sister, Retha Creed of LaGrange; five grandchildren and six great-
grandchildren.
Funeral services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley of

Mr. Miles was a native of Randolph County, born Feb. 26, 1912. He was a retired

(GLENN, Ga.) Funeral services for James Madison Sheppard, 86, of Glenn, Ga.,
formerly of Rock Mills, will be Thursday, July 27, 1995, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum
Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke.
Mr. Sheppard died Tuesday, July 25, at Franklin Health Care Center in Franklin, Ga.
A Randolph County native, he was born March 12, 1909, son of William Bert and
Jannie Leola Prather Sheppard. He was retired from Wehadkee Yarn Mills. His wife,
Ernest Thompson Sheppard, and a son, Tommy Sheppard, preceded him in death.
Survivors include three daughters, Joyce Butler of Ashland and Nell Barrett and
Dianah Bailey, both of Glenn; five sons, Jimmy Sheppard of Wade, N.C., Gerald Sheppard
of Rock Mills, Ted Sheppard of Glenn, Jack Sheppard of LaFayette and Roger Sheppard

Bassett. She was Baptist by faith and was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Wilbur Sims of Detroit, Mich.; three sisters, Anna Mayo Allen
and Louise Foster, both of LaGrange, Ga., and Lillian Tabaka of Clinton Township,
Mich.; three brothers, Edward Bassett of Wedowee, Vernon Bassett of Mobile and
Holmes Bassett of Selma; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Brady died Saturday, July 22, at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley,
Ala. She was born Aug. 6, 1912, in Chambers County, Ala., and was a member of Rehope
Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Brady.
Survivors include six daughters, Mary Lett and Janett Williams of Lanett, Velma
Hillsman of Atlanta, Ga., Linda Ash of Five Points, Carolyn Lee of Bay City, Mich., and

(WEDOWEE) Dorothy Messer Kirby Mitchell, 63, of Lakeview Drive, Wedowee, died
Wednesday, July 19, 1995, at her residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, July 21, at Napoleon East Church of Christ
with Bro. W. C. Cofield and V. W. Roland [Boland?] officiating. Burial was in the
adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. Mitchell is survived by one son, Michael D. Kirby of Wedowee; two sisters, Mrs.
Lorie Mae Wilson of Roanoke and Mrs. Ersula Thompson of Woodland; three brothers,
Ed Messer of Gadsden, Holice Messer of Roanoke and Curtis Messer of Woodland; and a
host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Donald Thompson, Tony Thompson, Jimmy Pollard, Wayne Messer,
Tom Messer and Randy Wilson.
Mrs. Mitchell was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was born
on June 21, 1932, to Kirk and Carrie Bailey Messer. She was an employee of LaMar
Manufacturing Company and a member of Napoleon East Church of Christ.

Wyatt Staples Jr.
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Wyatt Staples Jr., 74, of Roanoke were at 1 p.m.
Saturday, July 22, 1995, from Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church in Roanoke, the Rev.
L. B. Houston, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Staples died Wednesday, July 19, at his residence in Roanoke after a lengthy illness
and home confinement.
He was a lifelong resident of Roanoke and a longtime member of Peace and Goodwill
Baptist Church. He was married for 49 years to the former Louise Gates. Mr. Staples was
a veteran of the United States armed forces, having served during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Staples; two sons, Wyatt Staples III and Jerry
Staples; a daughter, Lois Bell; one brother, Laymon Staples, and two grandchildren,
all of Roanoke.
Pallbearers were deacons of Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church, and flower attendants
were selected friends of the family.

(WADLEY) Leola Buchanan Zachery, 87, of Wadley, died Saturday, July 22, 1995,
at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke, after a short illness.
Services for Ms. Zachery will be Thursday, July 27, at 2 p.m. from Cougar Hill C.M.E.
Church at Daviston, the Revs. Tom Staples Jr. and W. H. Trammell officiating. Burial will
be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Ophelene Battle of Roanoke, Mrs. Beatrice Ellis
of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Mae Recie Wheeler and Mrs. Rosie Lee Staples of Wadley and Mrs.
Elizabeth Bailey of Dayton, Ohio; three sons, Allen Zachery of Anniston, Vernon Zachery
of Dayton and Lonnie Zachery of Wadley; two brothers, Hugh Gene Buchanan and Willie
James Buchanan of Anniston; and 36 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours for Mrs. Zachery will be Wednesday, July 26, from 10 a.m. until 9
p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 until 8 p.m. The remains
will be placed in the church one hour prior to the services on Thursday.
Ms. Zachery was a native of Daviston and was the widow of the late Charlie Zachery.
She was the mother of 15 children, of whom eight preceded her in death. She was a
member of Cougar Hill C.M.E. Church until faced with declining health.

Susie Mae Goss
(CLEVELAND, Ohio) Susie Mae Goss, 86, of Cleveland, Ohio, died Wednesday, July
19, 1995, at Metro Skilled Nursing Home in Cleveland.
Ms. Goss was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Roanoke.
Survivors include two grandsons, Lathonia Wright and Danny Wright of Roanoke; one
daughter, Mrs. Annie Lois Wright of Roanoke; six great-grandchildren; a very special
nephew, Conner Slay of Cleveland; and many other relatives and friends.
Services for Ms. Goss will be Wednesday, July 26, at 2 p.m. from Mt. Pisgah Baptist
Church, the Rev. R. L. Heflin, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the church
cemetery.

William Junior Ferrell
(LANETT) William Junior Ferrell, 54, of Lanett died Thursday, July 20, 1995, at his
residence.
Graveside services were Friday, July 21, at 10 a.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett, the
Revs. Jim Abbott and J. H. King officiating.
Mr. Ferrell is survived by his wife, Yvonne Ferrell of Lanett; his daughter, Donna
Ferrell Whaley of Lanett; his mother, Bonnie Kirby Ferrell of Wadley; two sisters, Betty
Hodges and Annie Noles, both of Wadley; his brother, Gay Ferrell of Roanoke; and two
grandchildren.
Born June 20, 1941, in Randolph County, Mr. Ferrell was a retired employee of UPS
and had owned and operated many businesses in the Valley area. Mr. Ferrell, a U.S. Army
veteran, lived in the Lanett area most of his life and was a member of the LaFayette and
Lanett Masonic lodges, the Shriners and Scottish Rite, and Plant City Baptist Church in
Lanett.

Baptist Church, Roanoke, the Rev. L. B. Houston, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the
Skyview Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Welch.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Betty Ann Staples of LaFayette and Mrs. Mary
Frances Tucker, Ms. Mary Nell Mosley, Ms. Corine McCurty and Ms. Mary Catherine
McCurty, all of Roanoke; one sister, Mrs. Janie Pearl Foster of LaFayette; one brother,
Rufus Miller of Milledgeville, Ga.; and 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Ms. McCurty was a native of Roanoke, the ninth of ten children born to the parentage
of the late Rufus and Mandy Jenkins Miller and was the widow of the late L. C. McCurty.
She was a faithful member of Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church until faced with
declining health.
