Rufus Eugene Cummings
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Rufus Eugene Gene Cummings, 59, of Roanoke
were Friday, Sept. 30, 1994, at 3 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Revs. Cecil
Halsey, Bill Calhoun and Gary Baugh officiating. Burial was at Mt. Pleasant Baptist
Church Cemetery, Wedowee.
Mr. Cummings died Wednesday, Sept. 28, at Randolph County Hospital.
A lifelong resident of Roanoke, he was a Randolph County native, born April 14, 1935,
son of Thomas Rufus and Carrie Mitchell Cummings. He operated Cummings Grocery in
Roanoke.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Voncile Fincher Cummings of Roanoke; one daughter,
Mrs. Stacy Murphy of Roanoke; two sons, Steve Cummings and David Cummings, both
of Roanoke; three sisters, Mrs. Delilah Fetner and Mrs. Susan West, both of Roanoke, and
Mrs. Margaret Nation of LaGrange; five brothers, Calvin Cummings of LaGrange, Buddy
Cummings of Tennessee and Wilson Cummings, Bill Cummings and Ricky Cummings, all
of Roanoke; his step-mother, Mrs. Hilda Cummings, also of Roanoke; and eight grand-
children.
Pallbearers were Jeremy Cummings, Kevin Cummings, Russ Cummings, Eric
Cummings, Jamie Taylor and Pat Whaley. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Ronnie
Whaley, Roy Reeves, Robbie Robertson, Donald Pinkard, James Bassett and Charlie
Slaughter.
Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ervin Hall
(ROCK MILLS) Funeral services for Ervin Hall, 87, of Rock Mills were Friday,
Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. from Rock Mills Church of the Nazarene, with Rev. Franklin Foster
officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mr. Hall died Wednesday, Sept. 28, at his residence.
A lifelong resident of Rock Mills, Mr. Hall was a Randolph County native, born
Dec. 26, 1906, son of Charlie Marshall and Martha Elizabeth Hollis Hall. He had worked
with Wehadkee Yarn Mills and was a member of Rock Springs Church of the Nazarene.
His wife, Lucile Bennett, preceded him in death.
Survivors include two sons, Harold Hall and Hubert Hall, both of Roanoke; a sister,
Mrs. Evie Plugis of Newnan, Ga.; and five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and
two great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Randy Hall, Tim Hall, Mark Hall, Paul Williams, Wallace Burson and
Jerry Davis.
Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jeanette W. Meacham
(WOODLAND) Jeanette W. Meacham, 56, of Rt. 2, Woodland, died Thursday,
Sept. 29, 1994, at her residence after a short illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, in Benefield Funeral Home Chapel,
with Rev. Monroe Wiggins officiating. Burial was in the Hepsabah Baptist Church
cemetery.
Ms. Meacham is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Patricia McManus of Woodland and
Mrs. Mary Fredrikson of Newell; two sons, Rufus Meacham of Oak Harbor, Wash., and
Charlie Robert Meacham of Haralson, Ga.; seven grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Alice
Houston of Tyrone, Ga.; two brothers, Leonard Willingham of Newnan, Ga., and Gene
Willingham of Tyrone, Ga.
Pallbearers were Richard Holcombe, Gary Mundy, Jerry McManus, Roger Abrams,
Shawn Phillips and Steve Willingham.
Ms. Meacham was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was a
member of Union Baptist Church and was employed with Worthen Ind., Inc.

Ora Slay
(ROANOKE) Ora Slay, 64, of Roanoke died Sunday, Oct. 2, 1994, at Randolph
County Hospital, Roanoke.
Mrs. Slay was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, the 15th of
17 children of Lee and Beulah Cosby Magby. She was a member of Friendship Baptist
Church in the Bacon Level community.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Octo. 7, at Friendship Baptist Church, Rev.
Amos Magby officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include three sons, Willie Joe McCray and Melvin Lee McCray of Roanoke
and Thomas McCray of Franklin, Ga.; one daughter, Mrs. Margie Owensby of Roanoke:
four sisters, Mrs. Annie Wilkerson of Roanoke, Mrs. Lizzie Datcher of LaGrange, Ga.,
and Mrs. Mary Appleby and Mrs. Catherine Williams of Atlanta; four brothers, Charlie
Magby and Emory Magby of Valley, Robert Magby of Roanoke and O. C. Magby of
Chattanooga, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a special friend, Sam
Freeland of Roanoke; and a longtime companion, Mrs. Sallie Scott of Roanoke.
Clark Memorial Funeral Service in Roanoke was in charge of arrangements.

Alexus Carolyn Fisher, infant
(ROANOKE) Graveside services for Alexus Carolyn Fisher, infant daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Jeff Fisher of Roanoke, were Saturday, Oct. 1, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Cedarwood
Cemetery, with Rev. Harold Bonner officiating.
The infant died Thursday, Sept. 29, at University Hospital in Birmingham.
Survivors include her parents, Jeff William and Alecia Barbette Fisher of Roanoke;
grandparents Kitty and Bovine Fisher of Roanoke and Freddy and Melisa Windsor of
Roanoke; great-grandmothers Velma Fisher and Julia Parrish, both of Roanoke; and a
sister, Danielle Oliver of Roanoke.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Alyissa Nicole Fisher.

Charles Harold Scarbary, infant
(WEDOWEE) Infant Charles Harold Scarbary, Jr., died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1994, in
Clay County Hospital, Ashland.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at Calvary Baptist Church, with
Rev. Benny Rosser officiating.
Infant Scarbary is survived by his parents, Loretta Avila and Charles Harold Scarbary
Sr. of Wedowee; paternal grandparents, Curtis and Irene Scarbary of Wedowee; maternal
grandparents, Joe and Dottie Yetneck of Lakeland, Fla.; and one brother, Bradley Ryan
Avila of Wedowee.

Walter Meacham
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Walter E. Meacham, 96, of LaGrange died Saturday, Sept. 24,
1994, at Brian Center Nursing Care following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral
Home, with Ministers Elmer M. McCoy Jr. and Donald C. Murrell officiating. Burial was
in Shadowland Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Sherman Calhoun Prather and John Henry Wall, sons-in-law, and
James Wesley Meacham, Stephen Broughton Meacham, Alan Jackson Wall and Eric
Norman Wall, grandsons.
Born in Heard County, Ga., on Feb. 10, 1898, Mr. Meacham was the son of the late
James Wesley and Mary Boyd Meacham, grandson of the late Robert and Nancy Elizabeth
Reynolds Meacham, great-grandson of the late Henry Banks, and Wilmuth Williams
Meacham Sr. of Randolph County, Ala., Revolutionary soldier from Baldwin County, Ga.,
great-great-grandson of Samuel and Nancy Stephens Sentell, Revolutionary soldier from
Forsyth County, Ga.
Mr. Meacham had lived in LaGrange most of his life, and was retired from the Hillside
Plant of Callaway Mills Company and was a member of Park Avenue Church of Christ. He
and his wife Maude were married on March 27, 1920.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Maude Meacham of LaGrange; two daughters, Mrs.
Avanelle Prather of Decatur, Ga., and Mrs. Lois Marlene Wall of Marietta, Ga.; a son,
Buford Meacham of LaGrange; eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and
one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Will Fincher
(WEDOWEE) Mary Will Fincher, 94, of Wedowee died Sunday, Oct. 2, 1994, in
Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke, after a short illness.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at First United Methodist Church of
Wedowee, with Rev. Tom Roberts officiating. Burial was in Wedowee City Cemetery.
Mrs. Fincher is survived by one sister, Mrs. Rosa Manahan of Eagle Lake, Fla.; four
grandsons, C. G. Fincher III, Mark Allen Fincher and James Jay Fincher of Wedowee, and
John Baker of Eufaula; and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Dick Israel, Mike Perry, Tom Perry, Robert Kerr, Rob Perry and Joey
Burns.
Mrs. Fincher was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was a former
teacher, a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church of Wedowee,
Women's Study Club, Day Lily Club and UMW.

Grace Ward Houze
(GARLAND, Texas) Funeral services for Grace Ward Houze, 81, of Garland, Texas,
formerly of Roanoke, were Tuesday, Oct. 4, 1994, at 10 a.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral
Chapel, with Rev. Stoney Halsey officiating. Burial was at Forest Home Congregational
Christian Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Houze died Saturday, Oct. 1, at Baylor Hospital in Garland.
A Troup County, Ga., native, Mrs. Houze was born Aug. 26, 1913, daughter of
William Walter and Mary Pearl Pinkard Ward. She was a member of Lanett
Congregational Christian Church and had worked as an inspector with West Point
Pepperell.
Survivors include her husband, James E. Houze of Garland; a daughter, Mrs. Helen
Kemp of Dallas, Texas; a brother, Garvis Ward of Cusseta, Ala.; three grandchildren and
five great-grandchildren.

Ada Idalee Holloway, 103
(WOODLAND) Ada Idalee Holloway, age 103, of Woodland died Oct. 2, 1994, in
Bowdon, Ga.
Survivors of Mrs. Holloway include five children, Howard Holloway of Woodland,
James Holloway of Buffalo, N.Y., Mrs. Eunice Grier and Mrs. Willie Mae Jackson of
Woodland and Mrs. Lovie Pinkard of Anniston; and 212 grandchildren and great-
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at one o'clock Friday afternoon, Oct. 7, from Union Hill
Baptist Church, with Rev. R. H. Heath and Rev. Lawrence Heath officiating. Interment
will be in Zion Rest Baptist Cemetery, Wedowee.
Arrangements are by Silmon Mortuary of Roanoke.
Visitation will be at the chapel of Silmon Mortuary on Thursday from 9 a.m. until
9 p.m. Mrs. Holloway will lie in state at the church on Friday for one hour prior to the
funeral services.

James Larry Martin
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for James Larry Martin, 51, of Roanoke, were Monday,
Oct. 10, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Harold Bonner
officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mr. Martin died Saturday, Oct. 8, at his residence.
A Cleburne County native and former resident of Piedmont, Mr. Martin was born
Dec. 24, 1942, son of J. V. and Louise Hindmon Martin. He was vice president and
general manager of Superior Gas in Roanoke.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Chris Ford Martin of Roanoke; a daughter, Mrs.
Merredith Sears of Roanoke; and his mother, Mrs. Louise Martin of Piedmont.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer
Society or to the West Georgia Medical Center Hospice, Vernon Street, LaGrange.
Pallbearers were Bobby Chapman, Bobby Moran, Jimmy Higgins, William Hill, Robert
Childs and Bill Montgomery.

Robert E. Traylor
(WEDOWEE) Robert E. Traylor, 90, of Wedowee, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 1994, in
Regional Medical Center, Anniston, as the result of an automobile accident.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, in Benefield Funeral Home Chapel,
with Rev. Gordon Taylor officiating. Burial was in Wedowee City Cemetery.
Mr. Traylor is survived by one granddaughter, Mrs. Vickie Deitz of Carson City, Nev.,
and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were nephews.
Mr. Traylor was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was retired
from the Alabama Forestry Department and was a member of Pine Hill Christian Church.

Erma B. Duke
(LEWISTON, N.Y.) Erma B. Duke, former resident of Wedowee, 93, died Oct. 3,
1994, in Lewiston, N.Y.
Born in Randolph County, Ala., Nov. 7, 1900, Mrs. Duke was the daughter of the late
Jeff and Winnie Hill Barton. She was a former Randolph County school teacher and a
social worker with the Randolph County Department of Pensions and Security, having
retired in 1970 from this department.
She is survived by three sons, Don Duke of Lewiston, N.Y., Eddie Duke of Niagara
Fall[s], N.Y., and Carey Duke of Anderson, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and several
great-grandchildren; and two brothers and two sisters, Jeff Barton of Clovis, Calif., Robert
(Bobby) Barton and Era Norman of Roanoke and Margaret Pate of Phenix City, Ala.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, with burial in Lewiston.

Chink Whaley
(DANVILLE, Va.) Chink Whaley, 80, of Danville, Va., formerly of Randolph County,
died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 1994, in Regional Medical Center, Danville, after an extended
illness.
Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church,
with Rev. Tim Whaley officiating.
Mr. Whaley is survived by one son, Roger Whaley of Danville, Va.; one step-daughter,
Betty Bailey of Wadley; three sisters, Mrs. Inez Holloway of Wedowee, Miss Lucille
Whaley of Roanoke and Mrs. Velma Mitchum of Huntsville; five brothers, Fred Whaley
and Lum Perce Whaley of Wedowee, Pete Whaley and H. S. Whaley of Roanoke, and
Harvis Whaley of Woodland; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Mike Whaley, Kenneth Whaley, Monroe Whaley, Jackie Whaley,
Hollis Holloway and Buddy Holloway.
Mr. Whaley was a native of Randolph County, born Dec. 13, 1913, the son of Rube
Whaley and Willie Mae Oats Whaley. He was a veteran of World War II and a retired
textile worker.

Rosa Mae Brand
(WOODLAND) Rosa Mae Brand, 70, of Rt. 2, Woodland, died Wednesday, Sept. 28,
1994, in East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 [sic - 30], at Woodland Church of
God, with Rev. Carolyn Baldwin and Rev. Donald Spradlin officiating. Burial was in
Randolph Memory Gardens, Roanoke.
Mrs. Brand is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mary Kimbrell of Newnan, Ga.; one son,
Oliver Crenshaw of Woodland; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and one
sister, Mrs. Bertha Jacks of Hogansville, Ga.
Pallbearers were grandsons.
Mrs. Brand, a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, was retired from textile
work and was a member of Woodland Church of God.

Bertha Lee Jeffers
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Bertha Lee Jeffers, 82, of Roanoke, will be
Wednesday, Oct. 12, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Revs.
Johnny Williams and Elton Overton officiating. Burial will follow at Beulah Baptist
Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Jeffers died Saturday, Oct. 8, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
A Randolph County native, Mrs. Jeffers was born May 10, 1912, daughter of Tom and
Willie Veal Gay. She was a homemaker and a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, D. V. Jeffers of Roanoke; a sister, Mrs. Annie
Cunningham of Roanoke; two brothers, Luther Gay of Mt. Dora, Fla., and Billy Gay of
Lake Wales, Fla.
The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 8 a.m. Wednesday until
the time of the service.
Pallbearers will be Howard Bailey, Steve Williams, Rayford Dabbs, Craig Prestridge,
Marty Ivey and Donald Alsabrooks.

Claris Virginia Mitchell Beam
(GRAHAM) Services for Claris Virginia Mitchell Beam, 64, of Graham were Tuesday,
Oct. 11, 1994, at Rock Springs Baptist Church in Graham with Revs. Bobby Garner and
Thurmond Henderson officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery with Dryden
Funeral Home of Heflin in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Beam died Sunday, Oct. 9, in Cleburne County.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Gleda Beam Smith of Graham; one son, Steven
Beam of Graham; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Scott Smith, Steven Beam, Ray Turner, Buddy Parrish, Jerrel Smith
and Thamous Williams.
Mrs. Beam was a native of Cleburne County and a resident of Graham for the past
seven years. She was formerly of Oxford. Mrs. Beam was a member of Rock Springs
Baptist Church.

Mrs. Hill died Monday, Oct. 10, 1994, at Wedowee Hospital.

Lowney Manley Brewer
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Lowney Manley Brewer, 88, of Roanoke were
Friday, Oct. 14, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Revs. Bernard
Fuller, Wallace Roberts and Don Quick officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory
Gardens.
Mrs. Brewer died Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mrs. Brewer was a native of Palmetto, Ga.,
born March 20, 1906, daughter of Jack and Fannie Frances Moore Manley. She was a
member of White's Chapel United Methodist Church and of the Randolph County
Homemakers Club and had worked as a spinner with Wehadkee Yarn Mills.
Mrs. Brewer is survived by several nieces and nephews. Her nephews served as
pallbearers.

David Prescott
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for David Prescott, 95, of Roanoke were Friday,
Oct. 14, 1994, at 11 a.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Douglas Turner
officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mr. Prescott died Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
A Randolph County native, Mr. Prescott was born March 13, 1899, son of B. S. and
Fannie Smith Prescott. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Roanoke and had
worked as a truck driver with Hodges Gas Company.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah L. Prescott of Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Yates
of Wedowee and Mrs. Kate Beddingfield of LaGrange, Ga.; and a brother, Hoyt Prescott
of Atlanta.
The family requests no flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to First
Baptist Church of Roanoke or to one's favorite charity.

David Beason Noles
(GRAHAM) David Beason Noles, 77, of Route 1, Graham, died Friday, Oct. 14, at his
residence.
He was born in Randolph County on Jan. 10, 1917, the son of the late Newton C. and
Maggie Hendrix Noles. Mr. Noles was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of
Bethlehem Campground United Methodist Church, and owner of D. B. Noles and Sons
Grocery.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Hazel Cosper Noles of Graham; one son, Lindon
Noles of Ranburne; one daughter, Mrs. Jimmie Ruth McLeod of Lineville, Ga. [sic -
Ala.?]; one brother, Luther Noles of Bowdon, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Dr. Tommy
McLeod and Leslie Riley of Birmingham and Shane Noles of Ranburne.
Funeral services were Sunday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m. from Bethlehem Campground United
Methodist Church, with Rev. Lee Roy Shaw and Rev. Ray Runyan officiating. Interment
was in the church cemetery.

Dorothy Frieson Washington
(ATLANTA, Ga.) Mrs. Dorothy Frieson Washington, 41, of Atlanta died Saturday,
Oct. 15, 1994, at Dekalb Medical Center, Decatur, Ga.
Services for Mrs. Washington will be Saturday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m. CDT from Saint
Paul Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Rev. Jerry Seay, pastor, officiating. Burial will be
in Cedar Oak Cemetery, Tuscaloosa.
Mrs. Washington, a native of Tuscaloosa and a member of St. Paul Baptist Church
there, worked at Sears Roebuck and Co. in Tuscaloosa and in Atlanta, where she was
employed later by Southeastern News.
Survivors include her husband, Larry Washington of Atlanta; two sons, Jody Anderson
of Tuscaloosa and Burton Anderson of Atlanta; one daughter, Ms. Ashley Washington of
Atlanta; her mother, Mrs. Betty Louise Frieson of Tuscaloosa; her godparent, Riley Stapp
of Tuscaloosa; her father, Clarence Frieson of Tuscaloosa; her step-mother, Mrs. Cora
Frieson of Tuscaloosa; two brothers, Willie James Frieson of Milpitas, Calif., and Warren
Frieson of Boston, Mass.; two sisters, Ms. Juanita Frieson Kimbrough of Birmingham and
Ms. Shelia Frieson Prince of Tuscaloosa; and her grandmother, Mrs. Harriet Morton of
Columbus, Miss.
Visitation will be at Van Hoose and Steel Funeral Home in Tuscaloosa from Thursdayt
[sic] until the day of services.
The cousins and nephews serving as pallbearers will be Willie Keith III, James Starklin
Jr., Reginal Morton, Marcus Wright, Sherard Frieson, Roderick Frieson and LaKendrick
Bishop.

William T. Smith
(FRANKLIN, Ga.) William Thomas Tommy Smith, 28, of Franklin, died Saturday,
Oct. 15, 1994, when fire destroyed his Franklin home.
The funeral was at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral
Home, Hogansville, with burial in Franklin City Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born May 14, 1966, in Bay County, Fla., son of Mary Doyle Bagley and
Hoyt A. Smith of Newnan. He worked at Rooks Overhead Garage Door Company in
Newnan.
Survivors, other than his mother, of Hogansville, and his father, of Newnan, include his
wife, Lorie Childers Smith of Franklin; a daughter, Jessica Smith of Dothan, Ala.; a
step-daughter, Lisa Annette Mashburn of Franklin; a step-son, Westley Clyde Mashburn
of Franklin; a step-father, Robert Bagley of Hogansville; two sisters, Christie Smith of
Hogansville and June Raines of Panama City, Fla.; three brothers, Gene Smith of
Luthersville and Donnie Smith and Wayne Smith, both of Newnan; and maternal
grandfather, Harvey Lee Arrington of Senoia.

William T. Smith II and Kala D. Smith
(FRANKLIN, Ga.) William Thomas T Smith II, 1, and Kala Danielle Smith, 2, both
of Franklin, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 1994, when fire destroyed their Franklin home.
They are the children of Lorie Childers Smith and the late William Thomas Smith of
Franklin.
The funeral was at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral
Home, Hogansville, with burial in Franklin City Cemetery.
Survivors, other than their mother, include two half-sisters, Jessica Smith of Dothan,
Ala., and Lisa Annette Mashburn of Franklin; a half-brother, Westley Clyde Mashburn of
Franklin; their paternal grandparents, Robert and Mary Doyle Bagley of Hogansville and
Hoyt A. Smith of Newnan; their maternal grandparents, Sandi Yearta of Franklin and
James Edward Childers of Mellow Valley, Ala.; a paternal great-grandfather, Harvey Lee
Arrington of Senoia; their maternal great-grandparents, Henry and Hazel Allen of
Franklin, formerly of Roanoke; and their maternal great-great-grandmother, Annie Lois
Lucas of Franklin.

James Claude Embrey Jr.
(RIVERDALE, Ga.) The Rev. James Claude Embrey Jr. of Riverdale, a former
resident of Roanoke, Ala., died Sunday, Oct. 16, 1994. He was a retired Baptist minister.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Tara Garden Chapel, Dr. David Tew
officiating. Interment was at 2:30 in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke. Arrangements
were by Tara Garden Chapel, Jonesboro.

Herman J. Hammond
(ROANOKE) Herman J. Hammond, 97, of Rt. 3, Roanoke, died Thursday, Oct. 13,
1994, in Traylor Nursing Home, Roanoke, after a brief illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Big Springs Baptist Church, with
Revs. David Daniel and Cal Ledbetter officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Hammond is survived by three grandchildren, Mrs. Patricia H. Prince of Roanoke,
Mrs. Cynthia Langley of Bowdon, Ga., and Mark A. Hammond of Roanoke;
daughter-in-law, Mrs. Joyce Hammond of Roanoke; and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Barry Hammond, Jerome Hammond, Mark Hammond, Ott Hester,
Dennis May and Ted Noles.
Mr. Hammond was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, born April 11,
1897, to William M. Hammond and Pernina Hester Hammond. He was a member and
deacon of Big Springs Baptist Church and was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death
by his wife, Maudie Hammond, and one son, Billy Hammond.

Floyd Haynes Fetner
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Floyd Haynes Fetner, 62, of Roanoke were Friday,
Oct. 21, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Revs. Maynard Fetner
and Handley Fetner officiating. Burial was at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Welch.
Mr. Fetner died Wednesday, Oct. 19, at his Chambers County residence.
A Randolph County native, Mr. Fetner was born July 26, 1932, son of Lavert and
Myrtle Haynes Fetner. He was an army veteran of the Korean War and a self-employed
grocery store operator.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Frances Lambert Fetner of Roanoke; two daughters,
Mrs. Felecia Brown and Mrs. Fawn Hann of Roanoke; a son, Frank Fetner of Roanoke;
three sisters, Mrs. Bonnie Lipford of Orlando, Fla., Mrs. Sarah Messer of Wedowee and
Mrs. Sandra Hall of Roanoke; a brother, Wayne Fetner of Benton, Ark.; and seven
grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Joe Lambert, Jerome Brown, R. O. Messer, Sr., R. O. Messer, Jr.,
Harold Hall and Charles Lipford.
Quattlebaum Funeral Home of Roanoke was in charge of arrangements.

John Thomas J. T.' Rollins
(WOODLAND) The Rev. John Thomas J. T. Rollins, 73, of Woodland died
Wednesday, Oct. 19, 1994, at his residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Rocky Branch Baptist Church, with
Revs. Roy Palmer and J. C. Holloway officiating. Burial was in the old Rocky Branch
Baptist Church Cemetery.
The Rev. Mr. Rollins is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elsie Mae Rollins of Woodland; two
sons, Thomas Barry Rollins of Woodland and Tony Rollins of Cragford; six sisters, Mrs.
Sara Lou Wheeler of Sylvania, Mrs. Mavis Davis, Mrs. Bobbie Huddleston, Mrs. Shirley
Powell and Mrs. Shelly Jean Dalton of Valley and Mrs. Mary Bell Gurney of Lakeville,
Fla.; and three grandchildren, Chad Thomas Rollins of Woodland and Matt R. Rollins and
Amanda Lynn Rollins of Cragford.
Pallbearers were nephews.
The Rev. Mr. Rollins was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He had
been a Baptist ordained minister for the past 41 years. He was a member of Macedonia
Baptist Church in Heard County. He was also a member of the Central East Alabama and
West Georgia Baptist Association.

Charlie Will McKeen
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Charlie Will McKeen, 78, of 3075 Roanoke Road, LaGrange, died
Monday, Oct. 24, 1994, in West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, after an extended
illness.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. (CST) Wednesday, Oct. 26, at Levens Baptist
Church, with Rev. Charles Chapman officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. McKeen is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Wright McKeen of LaGrange; two
daughters, Mrs. Hazel Barfield and Mrs. Miriam Treadwell of LaGrange; one son, Garvis
McKeen of LaGrange; six grandchildren, Lamar McKeen of LaGrange, Garvis McKeen Jr.
of Birmingham, Becky Purcell of LaGrange, Keith Barfield of Birmingham, Wayne
Barfield of Montgomery and Donna Askins of LaGrange; eight great-grandchildren; and
one brother, Kermit McCain of Wedowee.
Mr. McKeen was a native of Randolph County, born May 16, 1916, to Dan McKeen
(McCain) and Roxie McManus McKeen. He had lived in LaGrange for the past 52 years.
He was retired from Callaway Mills and was a member of the 25-year club there. He was a
member of Caver's Grove Baptist Church.
Mr. McKeen will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the funeral.

Sara Lue Heath
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Sara Lue Heath, 71, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 22, 1994, at New Harmony Baptist Church, LaFayette, with Rev. Chester
E. Holloway officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Heath died Monday, Oct. 17, at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Jo Ann Hopper; two brothers, Boss Heath and
Willie Lee Turner; grandson, Fredrick Tucker; son-in-law, Jimmy Hopper; brother-in-law,
Nathaniel Burrow; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Vera Heath and Mrs. Linnie Heath of
Lanett.
A native of LaFayette, Chambers County, Mrs. Heath was the daughter of the late
Columbus and Rosetta Trammell Heath. She was retired after having worked for 14 years
as a nursing assistant for Rosser Nursing Home in Roanoke and was a member of New
Harmony Baptist Church.
Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service.

(ROOPVILLE, Ga.) Woodrow Parmer, 73, of Roopville, Ga., formerly of Randolph
County, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 1994, in Tanner Medical Center, Carrollton, Ga., after a
short illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at Gray Hill Church of God, with
Revs. Ricky Adams, Roy Frazier and Larry Wooten officiating. Burial was in the adjoining
cemetery.
Mr. Parmer is survived by his wife, Mrs. Doris Parmer of Roopville; one daughter,
Mrs. Brenda Wyatt of Carrollton; one son, Dr. Keith Parmer of Rome, Ga.; three sisters,
Mrs. Mae Woods of Wedowee, Mrs. Gladys Bassett of Roanoke and Mrs. Mary Lee
Noles of Roopville; two brothers, T. P. Parmer of Woodland and Y. C. Parmer of
Roanoke; and five grandchildren, Darrin Wyatt of Marietta, Ga., Anna Parmer of Augusta,
Ga., Jeff Wyatt of Carrollton, and Emily Parmer and John Parmer of Rome.
Pallbearers were Darrin Wyatt, Jeff Wyatt, John Parmer, Bobby Parmer, Herschel
Parmer and Wendell Parmer.
Mr. Parmer was a native of Randolph County, born Dec. 5, 1920, to William Monroe
Parmer and Sally Jane Gore Parmer. He was a veteran of World War II and a retired
textile worker. He attended Gray Hill Church of God.

Sarah Wellborn Hughes
(FAYETTEVILLE, Ga.) Sarah Wellborn Hughes, 46, of Fayetteville, died Monday,
Oct. 17, 1994.
Ms. Hughes is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur (Annie Mae Knight)
Wellborn of Fayetteville, formerly of Randolph County; three sisters, Mrs. Dennis
(Melinda) Berkelbaugh of Fayetteville, Mrs. Bobby (Mary) McLeod of Jonesboro and
Mrs. Leroy (Louise) Storey of Loganville; one brother, Walter Wellborn of Loganville;
and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Carl J. Mowell &
Son, in Fayetteville. Rev. James Burdette and Rev. Jim Wright officiated. Interment was in
Westminster Gardens, Peachtree City, Ga.
In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the Southwest Christian
Hospice.

Terrell Whaley
(LANETT) Terrell Whaley, 47, of Lanett, formerly of Roanoke, died Saturday,
Oct. 22, 1994, at Memorial Hospital, Gulfport, Miss.
Mr. Whaley was born in Randolph County Jan. 24, 1947, son of the late Blanche
Sheppard Whaley and Will Byrd Whaley. He had served as the mayor of Lanett for the
past two years. He began his career in radio broadcasting at WELR in Roanoke 33 years
ago and was station manager of WCJM in West Point until a year ago. Throughout the
years he had worked hard to raise money for needy causes, including Valley Haven,
George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital and areas throughout the Southeast hit hard by
natural disasters.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Ferrell Whaley of Lanett; three daughters, Rebecca
Whaley and Carmen Whaley of Roanoke and Dakota Whaley of Lanett; four sons, Leland
Whaley of Birmingham, Lincoln Whaley and Landon Whaley of Lanett, and David Whaley
of LaGrange, Ga.; one sister, Shelia Pollard of Douglasville, Ga.; and one grandchild.
Graveside services were Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett,
with Rev. J. H. King, Rev. Gene Webb and Rev. Bernard Fuller officiating.
The family respectfully declines the gift of flowers and asks that any contributions be
made to the National Kidney Foundation or needy charity funds set up at Valley National
Bank.
