OBITUARIES:

Robert Gary Sims

   (SELMA) Services for Robert Gary Sims, 58, of Selma were Monday, Oct. 3, 
2005, at 1 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, Roanoke, with the Rev. John Cole 
officiating. Burial followed at the Sims Cemetery.
   Mr. Sims died Saturday, Oct. 1, at Long Term Health Care of Montgomery.
   Survivors include his wife, Brenda Terrell Sims of Selma; one daughter, 
Britta Sims of Greenville, S.C.; two stepdaughters, Tracy Robertson and Christy 
Glass of Selma; three sons, Robert Gary Sims Jr. of Roanoke, Audie Sims of 
Prattville and Jamie Sims of Clanton; his mother, Stella Sims of Daviston; and 
ten grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Robert Sims Jr., Audie Sims, Jamie Sims, Robert Sims III, 
Anthony Sims and Robbie Ussery.
   Mr. Sims was born Nov. 25, 1946, son of Ray Ison and Stella Halsey Sims. He 
was a member of Water Avenue Baptist Church in Selma and worked for McMillan 
Bloedell Timber Co.  Mr. Sims served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

John R. Knight

   (WEDOWEE) John R. Knight, 91, of County Road 905, Wedowee died Friday, Sept. 
30, 2005, at Roanoke Health Care Center.
   Services were Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 1 p.m. at Pine Flat Primitive Baptist 
Church, Wedowee, with Elder Thomas Knight, Elder James Rowe and Brother Henry 
Nelson officiating. Burial was in Stephen's Mission United Methodist Church 
Cemetery.
   Survivors include a daughter, Cora Smith of Waco, Texas; two sons, John W. 
Knight and Troy Knight of Wedowee; 23 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Fronia Knight; two daughters, Jeanetta 
Barsh and Annie Woodgett; and a son, Charlie Knight.

Sarah Jim McGraw Andrews

   (VALLEY) Sarah Jim McGraw Andrews, 87, of Valley died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, 
at LaGrange Hospice in LaGrange.
   Funeral services were Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 4 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service 
Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Danny Spear of the First Christian 
Church (Fairfax) of Valley presiding and with music by her grandson, Charles 
Smith.  Burial followed at Fairfax Cemetery.
   Mrs. Andrews is survived by two sons, Gerald Bruce Andrews Sr. of West Point, 
Ga., and James Larry Andrews of Valley; four grandchildren; and seven great-
grandchildren. She has two sisters, Ruth McGraw Still Langley and Grace McGraw 
Wright Bush of Valley and one brother, Nathan McGraw of LaGrange, Ga. She is 
also survived by a brother-in-law, sister-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
   Mrs. Andrews was born June 4, 1918, in Broughton Ridge, the daughter of 
Benjamin Sanford McGraw and Elester Chase McGraw. She was preceded in death by 
her husband of 66 years, James Bruce Andrews. Mrs. Andrews retired as a 
supervisor in the Fairfax Finishing Plant of WestPoint Stevens in 1983, after 
many years of service with the company. She attended Fairfax High School and was 
well-known throughout the Greater Valley area for the wonderful cakes and 
cookies she baked for many years.  She sang in the choir at the First Christian 
Church in Fairfax, where she was a deacon and served on the church board prior 
to her illness.
   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Christian Church 
Fairfax, 302 Blvd., Valley, AL 36854.

Opal Higgins

   (HEFLIN)  Services for Opal Higgins, 68, of Heflin were at 2 p.m. Thursday, 
Sept. 29, 2005, at Dryden Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chris Jackson 
officiating. Burial followed at Union Hill Cemetery in Randolph County.
   Ms. Higgins died Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Cleburne County Nursing Home.
  Survivors include her daughter, Charlotte Shockley of Oxford; brother, Joe 
Higgins of Heflin; one grandchild, Marc Shockley; and one great-grandchild.
   Ms. Higgins, a native of Randolph County, was a resident of Cleburne County 
for most of her life. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Clay County 
and was preceded in death by her son, Tony Gosdin.
   Pallbearers were Ronnie Gosdin, Roger Easterwood, Barry Williamson, Howard 
Shockley, Merrill Haynes and J. B. Camp.

Flo McEachern Bence

   (VALLEY) Flo McEachern Bence, 93, of Valley died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, at 
LaFayette Extended Care in LaFayette.
   Funeral services were Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service 
Funeral Home Chapel in valley with the Rev. Kenneth Holt officiating. Burial 
followed at Langdale Cemetery.
   Mrs. Bence is survived by her husband, James K. Bence; her son, Roy LaVon 
Wood of Hoover; one sister, Lois Holmes of Valley; two grandchildren; and two 
great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Bence was born Aug. 19, 1912, in Roanoke. She was the daughter of the 
late Dora Rowe Bowen and Lewis Bowen.  Mrs. Bence was a former employee of 
WestPoint Stevens Langdale Mill.

Eulice L. Gordon

   (LANETT) Mr. Eulice L. Gordon, 80, of Lanett died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, at 
LaFayette Extended Care in LaFayette.
   Funeral services were Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at Happy Valley Baptist 
Church in Lanett with the Revs. Rusty Letson and Mark McGee officiating. Burial 
followed at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
   Mr. Gordon is survived by his wife, Ellen W. Gordon; three daughters, Beverly 
Gale Rollins of Roanoke and Rzora Lee Daniel and Stacie Delores Gordon of 
Lanett; his son, Eulice Dale Gordon of Lanett; four sisters, Laura Mae Knight of 
Lanett, Mary Nell Brown of Roanoke and Janice Bradley and Ellen Bennett of West 
Point, Ga.; one brother, Arthur Wendell Gordon of Lanett; six grandchildren; and 
nine great-grandchildren.
   Born July 28, 1925, in Clay County, Mr. Gordon was the son of the late Jewel 
Lee Smith Gordon and the late Leon Gordon. He was preceded in death by a sister, 
Myrtle Edwards, and a brother, Billy Gordon.  Mr. Gordon was retired from Lanett 
Mill with 27 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World 
War II, where he was a wrestler on his ship. He was a member of the Valley 
Masonic Temple.  Mr. Gordon was an avid Braves and Alabama fan. He loved to 
watch wrestling on television.
   Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice in 
Valley or Happy Valley Baptist Church Building Fund in Lanett.

Thomas O. Gabriel

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Thomas O. Gabriel Sr., 87, of Wedowee were Monday, 
Oct. 3, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Bethel West Baptist Church, with the Rev. David 
Holcombe and the Rev. Phillip Waits officiating. Burial followed in the 
adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Gabriel died Saturday, Oct. 1, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Mr. Gabriel is survived by his wife, Jessie Bean Gabriel of Wedowee; two 
daughters, Deborah A. Gabriel of Wedowee and Denita Beth Gabriel of Atlanta; one 
son, Thomas O. Gabriel Jr. of Wedowee; two sisters, Avis Whaley of Lineville and 
Francis Highfield of Wedowee; one brother, James Gabriel of Roanoke; and a host 
of nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were the Masons of Sawyer Lodge #93.
   Mr. Gabriel was born Feb. 2, 1918, son of John Winston and Luzannie McCollum 
Gabriel. He was a member of Bethel West Baptist Church, a timber manager of 
Cleveland Wood Yard, and a member of Sawyer Lodge #93.

Sarah E. Healea

   (BLOOMINGTON, Ill.) Sara E. "Liz" Healea, 88, of Bloomington, Ill., died 
Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, at Asta Care Center of Bloomington.
   A graveside service was Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Farmer 
City, with the Rev. Don Roskowski officiating.
   Survivors include one daughter, Linda Ranney of Pakin, Ill.; two sons, Jim 
Healea of Wedowee and Paul Healea of Earlville, Ill.; nine grandchildren; seven 
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; one brother, Arkie Schulte of 
Rochelle, Ill.; and three sisters, Alice Welch of Gibson City, Ill., Mary 
Harrison of Tucson, Ariz., and Annabel Goodman of Winchester, Ky.
   The family suggests memorial donations be made to Passages Hospice.

Jeanette Green Billingslea

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Jeanette Billingslea, 84, of LaGrange, Ga., died Friday, 
Sept. 23, 2005, at Hospice LaGrange.
   Jeanette Green Billingslea was born June 18, 1921, in Roanoke to the late 
Lonnie and Anna Barrett Green. She joined Valley Grove Missionary Baptist Church 
at an early age and served faithfully until her health declined. Mrs. 
Billingslea was active in her church and was a deaconess, member of the mother 
and missionary boards and the C.W. Martin Gospel Chorale. She worked at Callaway 
Mills and did private duty at the hospital and in homes. She retired with 36 
years of service as a nurse's aide at West Georgia Medical Center. She was 
married to the late Norman H. Billingslea.
   She is survived by three children, Lonnie Owensby of Lanett and Jerrell 
Owensby and Brenda Powell of LaGrange; 13 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 
three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other 
relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Eva Mae 
Thomas, Mary Brewer, Cora Holley and Vester Davis; five brothers, Charles Wilson 
Green, J.D. Boyd, Olan Green, J.B. Green and Lonnie Green; two stepsons, Norman 
"Ball Eye" Billingslea and Jenes "Son" Billingslea; and a grandson, Larry B. 
Owensby.
   Services were Thursday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. at Valley Grove Missionary 
Baptist Church with the Rev. C.W. Martin officiating. Burial followed in 
Southview Cemetery.

Sarah Anderson Strain

   (WOODLAND) Graveside services for Sarah Anderson Strain, 83, of Woodland were 
Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, with the 
Rev. Bobby Kirby and the Rev. George Smitherman officiating.
   Mrs. Strain died Friday, Sept. 30, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Mrs. Strain is survived by one daughter, Geraldine Moore of Wetumpka; one 
son, Dan Strain of Columbus, Ga.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 
three sisters, Betty Haynes of Anniston, Hazel Johnson of Atlanta and Annette 
Miller of Carrollton, Ga.; and two brothers, John Anderson of Bowdon, Ga., and 
Tommy Ted Anderson of Atlanta.
   Mrs. Strain was born Sept. 16, 1922, daughter of Herman and Ennis Tomlinson 
Anderson.  She was a member of Zion Baptist Church and had been a seamstress for 
Sewell's. Mrs. Strain was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight Strain; two 
sisters, Brooksie Austin and Kathleen Messer; and three brothers, Sam, Jerry and 
Joe Anderson.

Evelyn Turner

   (AUSTIN, Texas) Evelyn Turner, 87, of Austin, Texas, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 
2005 of natural causes.
   Surviving are her daughter, Louise Gunn of Austin; her son, C.L. Turner III 
of LaJolla, Calif.; her sister, Janet Awbrey of Gainesville, Fla; three 
granddaughters and one grandson. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, 
Clyde L. Turner Jr.; a sister, Lillie Brown; a brother, John Crowder; her 
father, John Ellis Crowder; and her mother, Cassie Lee Tomlin Crowder.
   Annie Evelyn Crowder was born Jan. 31, 1918 in Roanoke. Mrs. Turner graduated 
from Handley High School in Roanoke in 1936 and attended two years of technical 
college in Atlanta. She held various positions in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., 
prior to moving to Dallas, where she married in February 1960 at First Baptist 
Church. Subsequently, Evelyn was a homemaker with her husband and two children. 
She was very active in church activities, particularly at Royal Haven Baptist 
Church in Dallas, Texas. She also engaged in her passion, angel collecting. She 
did volunteer work as a translator, and for the American Cancer Society and the 
American Heart Association. She moved to Austin in 2002.
   Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Restland Abbey Chapel, 
Austin. The family will accept flowers, or a memorial gift may be made to the

Wilma Young Dewberry

  (LINEVILLE) Services for Wilma Young Dewberry, 86, of Lineville were Tuesday, 
Oct. 11, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church, with the Revs. Braden 
Morrison and Claude Bennett officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Dewberry died Sunday, Oct. 9, at Clay County Hospital.
   She was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County, had been employed with 
Higgins Slacks Manufacturing Company for over 30 years, was a homemaker, and was 
a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church for over 72 years.
   She is survived by her husband, Larcus Dewberry of Lineville; one daughter, 
Linda McDonald of Lineville; two sons, James B. "Benny" Dewberry of Lineville 
and Ronald M. Dewberry of Oneonta; one sister, Weyonna Burgess of Rockingham, 
N.C.; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death 
by four sisters, Annie Burch Ford, Jeanene Jackson, Mary Blackstock and Sadie 
Bean; a brother, Woodson Young; and an infant brother.
   Pallbearers were grandsons Lamar Dewberry, Russell Dewberry, Doug Dewberry, 
David McDonald, Greg McDonald and Brandon McDonald. Honorary pallbearers were 
remaining grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their spouses and Beth 
Wheeles.

Lorene Story Oliver

   (NEW SITE) Services for Lorene Story Oliver, 90, of New Site were at 2 p.m. 
Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, at Radney Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Richard Hall Jr. 
and Randy Anderson officiated. Burial followed at Hillview Memorial Park.
   Mrs. Oliver died Thursday, Oct. 6, at Chapman Healthcare.
   She was born June 24, 1915, in Tallapoosa County to Henry Story and Pearl 
Moran Story. She worked as a seamstress for Russell Corporation for more than 38 
years. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, flowers, baking homemade apple pies, 
spending time with her grandchildren and traveling. She was a member of New 
Salem Baptist Church.
   She is survived by her daughter, Lullene O. Bence of Memphis; two sons, Lavan 
Oliver of New Site and Donald Oliver of Anniston; three sisters, Goldie Caldwell 
of Colorado City, Texas, Mary Sessions of Wadley and Ethel McGill of LaGrange, 
Ga.; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodfin Hayde Oliver; her parents; 
and two brothers, Algie Story and Clifford Story.

   (WOODLAND) Services for Gurtha Reen Rampy, 96, of Woodland were Tuesday, Oct.

   Mrs. Rampy died Saturday, Oct. 8, at Beverly Healthcare.
   Mrs. Rampy is survived by three daughters, Nellie Rue Butler of Anniston, 
Josephine McGuire of Wedowee and Sara Louise Gunter of Hoover; one son, John M. 
Rampy of Winchester, Term.; two sisters, Eva Sheppard of Roopville, Ga., and 
Ollie Cash of Langdale; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Stephen Rampy, Michael Rampy, Justin Brown, Miles Butler and 
Lester Rampy.
   Mrs. Rampy was born July 13, 1909, daughter of James Merrell and Minnie 
Walker Johnson. She was a member of Bear Creek United Methodist Church and was 
retired from Sewell Manufacturing. Mrs. Rampy was preceded in death by her 
husband, Lewis B. Rampy; a grandchild, Jason McGuire; three brothers and one 
sister.

   (WADLEY) Cora Marie McGuire, 63, of Wadley died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, at 
Traylor Nursing Home, Roanoke.

   Survivors include three children, Jessie McGuire of Springhill, Fla., and 
Forrest McGuire and Keith McGuire of Wadley; two sisters, Virgie Peters of 
Jerseyville, Ill., and Virginia Baysinger of Harriet, Ark.; a brother, Jessie 
Singleton of Fidelity, Ill.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death 
by her parents, Jessie Singleton and Evie Withrow, and her husband, William 
McGuire.

   (WEDOWEE)  Services for Eleanor Marie Loyd, 52, of Wedowee were Sunday, Oct.

officiating.  Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Loyd died Thursday, Oct. 6, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical 
Center, Anniston.
   Mrs. Loyd is survived by her fiance, Willie Ray Tidwell Sr. of Wedowee; three 
step-daughters, Dana Michelle Heith of Douglasville, Ga., Clara Lucille Waldrop 
of Wetumpka and Vanessa Lynn Tidwell of Wedowee; one son, Jimmy Orr of Wedowee; 
one step-son, Willie Ray Tidwell Jr. of Wedowee; one sister, Rebecca Smith of 
Wedowee; her mother-in-law, Carolyn Morris of Jonesboro, Ga.; and seven 
grandchildren.
   Mrs. Loyd was born Jan. 8, 1953.  She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist 
Church and had worked for Tyson Foods.

   (DECATUR, Ga.)  Mae Heard Gay, 75, of Decatur, Ga., died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 
2005, at Dekalb Medical Center, Decatur.
   Services were Monday, Oct. 10, at 1 p.m. at Saint Paul Missionary Baptist 
Church, Roanoke, with the Revs. Jeffery Rosser, C. H. Owens, Robert L. Heflin 
and William Phillips officiating.  Burial was in the Peace and Goodwill Baptist 
Church Cemetery.
   Survivors include two sons, Barry Heard of Decatur and Ronnie Heard of 
Lawrenceville, Ga.; a daughter, Allison Heard of Decatur; three sisters, Annie 
Heard and Mable Holley of Roanoke and Sara Clark of Stanford, Conn.; one 
granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.  She was preceded in death by her 
husband Lawrence Gay; and seven brothers, B.J. Heard, Richard Heard, Adam Heard, 
Paul Heard, Will Heard, David Heard and J.B. Heard.

   (GADSDEN)  Clara Mae Lattimore, 84, of Gadsden died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, 
at Riverview Medical Center, Gadsden.
   Services were Saturday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church, 
Roanoke, with the Rev. Lawrence Watts and the Rev. Tommie L. Finley officiating.  
Burial was in Mt. Bethel U.M.C. Cemetery.
   Survivors include a daughter, Mable McFarland of Gadsden; one granddaughter; 
four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.  She was preceded in 
death by three brothers, Jimmy L. Davis, Eddie B. Davis and Willie A. Davis; and 
a sister, Alice Houston.

Charles Foster

   (FIVE POINTS)  Charles Foster, 76, of Five Points died Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, 
at LaGrange Hospice.
   Mr. Foster was an Alabama native, born May 21, 1929.  He had retired from the 
construction business, where he was a heavy equipment operator.  The family asks 
that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to LaGrange Hospice in his memory.
   Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise Foster; four daughters, Ervilene 
Striblin of Panama City Beach, Fla., Deborah Darden and Belinda L. Griffin of 
LaGrange, Ga. and Nadia L. Foster of Atlanta; two sons, Charles T. Foster Jr. of 
Lanett and Curtis Robert Foster of Roanoke; two sisters, Florence Harvey and 
Marie Hall; 11 grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

Susie Mae Jackson

   (NEWELL) Services for Susie Mae Jackson, 88, of Newell were Friday, Oct. 7, 
2005, at 11 a.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Alfred 
Rutherford officiating.  Graveside services followed in Mt. Zion Baptist Church 
Cemetery, Hiram, Ga., at 2 p.m. Central time.
   Mrs. Jackson died Thursday, Oct. 6, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Mrs. Jackson is survived by one daughter, Barbara Ann Miller of Panama City, 
Fla.; four grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-
grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Mrs. Jackson was born May 7, 1917, daughter of J.S. and Pearl Earnest 
Whitten.  She was a member of Callie Harbin Baptist Church and a homemaker.

   (MONTGOMERY)  Services for Mary Reba McCarter Niver, 83, of Montgomery were 
Friday, Sept. 30, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Leak-Memory Chapel in Montgomery. The Rev. 
John Gaines officiated. Burial was in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in 
Randolph County with the Rev. Gary Henderson officiating. Pallbearers were James 
Baker, Bruce Fussell, Grayson Simmons, Joe Champion, Ed McCarter and Bill 
McCarter.
   Mrs. Niver died Sept. 28, at The Belmont Assisted Living in Montgomery.
   Mrs. Niver, daughter of Lee and Connie Bonner McCarter, was born Jan. 5, 
1922, in the Level Road community in Randolph County. She was a 1940 graduate of 
Wadley High School. She had lived in California and Kansas during her husband's 
Air Force career, and had lived in Montgomery since 1970. She was retired from 
Bell South and was a member of Forest Park Baptist Church.
   Mrs. Niver is survived by three nieces and caregivers Jane McCarter Fussell 
of Americus, Ga., Diane McCarter Simmons of Monroeville and Marsha Lee McCarter 
of Montgomery; and three nephews, Bill McCarter of West Columbia, S.C., Ed 
McCarter of Lithonia, Ga., and Scott McCarter of El Cajon, Calif. She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Ray L. Niver, and by her brothers, Tom Luther 
McCarter, William Cary McCarter and Joseph Leon McCarter.

   (ROANOKE) Emily Johnson Askew, 85, of Roanoke died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, at 
Traylor Nursing Home, Roanoke.

Points, with the Revs. Ollie Simpson, Lonnie B. Houston and William H. Trammell 
Sr. officiating.  
   Survivors include four daughters, Emily Ann Watts, Barbara Greathouse and 
Lela Gilbert of Roanoke and Sherry Douglas of LaGrange, Ga.; six sons, Willie

Roanoke.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Askew.

   Mr. Fetner died Friday, Oct. 7, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Survivors include two sons, Clifford Moncus of Camp Hill and James L. Moncus 
of Jessup, Ga.; three brothers, Ben Fetner of Cusseta, Ralph Fetner of Auburn 
and George Fetner of Valley; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Benny Satterwhite, Justin Dalton, Phillip Moncus, Tracy 
Moncus, Cory Bates, Jeremy Johnson, Kenny Wood and Herbert Denham.
   Mr. Fetner was born March 5, 1919, son of Alf and Fannie Fuller.  He was a 
member of High Pine Baptist Church, a retired farmer, and he served in the U.S. 
Army during World War II.  Mr. Fetner was preceded in death by his wife, Ivlyn 
Fetner.

   Mr. Braswell died Tuesday, Oct 4, in Anniston.
   Mr. Braswell is survived by his wife, Betty Waldrop Braswell of Wedowee; one 
daughter, Debbie Braswell Rice of Dadeville; two sons, Danny Braswell of 
Huntsville and David Braswell of Alpharetta, Ga.; five grandchildren; two great-
grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Martha Waldrop of Anniston; three sisters, 
Thelma Braswell of Wedowee, Mary Braswell Cobb of White Plains and Landers B. 
Morrison of Birmingham; and one brother, Grady Hamilton Braswell Jr. of Gadsden.

Cobb, John Cobb, Jay Gentry, Stan Hoge and Blair Parker.
   Mr. Braswell was born April 18, 1938, son of Grady Hamilton and Ethel L. 
Landers Braswell.  He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church, a poultry farmer, 
scoutmaster of Folsom School, and a member of the Democratic Party.  Flowers

Scotty Wayne Nobbley

   (NEWELL) Services for Scotty Wayne Nobbley, 23, of Newell were Monday, Oct.

   Mr. Nobbley died Thursday, Oct. 13, in Roopville, Ga.
   Mr. Nobbley is survived by his father, Mike Nobbley of Newell; his mother, 
Elain Nobbley of Jacksboro, Texas; his paternal grandparents, Vince and Adell 
Nobbley of Newell; and one brother, Shane Nobbley of Decatur, Ala. He was 
preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Slim and Mattie Johnson; and 
uncles Clayton and Baron Johnson.

   Mr. Nobbley was born Dec. 21, 1981. He was a member of Jordan's Chapel

Allene Dunn

   (FIVE POINTS) Allene Dunn, 82, of Five Points died Friday, Oct. 14, 2005 at 
her residence.
   Services were Monday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. at Five Points Baptist Church, with 
the Rev. Bob Karcher, Dr. David Bentley and Dr. Wayne Swindall officiating. 
Burial was in Five Points Cemetery.
   Surviving are her husband, Roy Dunn of Five Points; a sister, Lender Rearden 
of Valley; and three brothers, Leonard Brown and the Rev. Vernon Brown of Five 
Points and H.L. Brown of Warner Robbins, Ga.
   Mrs. Dunn was born Dec. 3, 1922 in Randolph County. She graduated from Auburn 
University with B.S. and masters degrees. She was a retired teacher who taught 
home economics at Valley High School and Five Points until her retirement after 
23 years. She was a member of Five Points Baptist Church, Five Points Study Club 
and the WMU. She taught Sunday school and as the church pianist for many years.

Ga.; and two brothers, Greg Moon and Michael Moon of Roanoke.

of Woodland; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded

Jessie Cromie

   (FORT WAYNE, Ind.) Jessie Cromie, 97, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at Parkview 
Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne.
   She was born in Randolph County and was a caregiver all of her life. Jessie 
died 23 days before her 98th birthday of natural causes.
   Survivors include son, John Cromie of Liberty, Ill.; daughters Mary Ahrens 
and Fern Squires of Fort Wayne; 15 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 19 
great-great-grandchildren; sisters Ollie Gay of LaGrange, Ga., and Audrey Lentz 
of Charlotte, N.C.; and a brother, Winston C. Barfield of Statesville, N.C.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, in 1959; daughters Isabell 
and Valerie Johnson; sons William and Elmer; sisters Mae Taylor, Florence 
Albright and Mattie Lou Foster; brothers Robert and Andrew Barfield and two 
small brothers.
   Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral 
Home, Fort Wayne, with calling one hour prior and from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

his wife, Zora Louise Brooks Fetner.

  (ANNISTON) Mavis Adene Holcomb, 76, of Anniston died on Thursday, Oct. 6, 
2005, at Regional Medical Center.
   Mrs. Holcomb is survived by her three children, Rory E. Holcomb of Ohatchee, 
Rhonda Baker of Jacksonville and Rodney Holcomb of Saks; nine grandchildren; 
three sisters, Etha Mae Bowen of Roanoke, Loretta Wiggley of Florida and Bovene 
McManus of Phenix City; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death 
by her husband Eli S. Holcomb; her parents William Nathan McKinley and Mary Lou 
Elma Langley; three brothers and two sisters.
   Mrs. Holcomb was born and raised in the Napoleon community.  She lived in 
Calhoun County from 1975 to 2005.

   Mr. Welch, who died Saturday, Oct. 15, was born Dec. 21, 1914, in Chambers

   (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Nathan Heard, 89, of Carrollton, Ga., formerly of Graham,

with interment in Saint James Cemetery in Graham.
   Mr. Heard is survived by a son, Lawance Heard of College Park, Ga.; four 
sisters, Mary Freeman of Newell, Vera Ridgeway of Butler, Bertha Lumpkin of 
Cincinnatti, Ohio, and Bernice Crowe of Atlanta; two brothers, Willie B. Heard

Harold Bishop Sr.

   (TUSCALOOSA) Dr. Harold Bishop Sr., 62, of Tuscaloosa, died Oct. 21, 2005.

The University of Alabama with Dr. James C. Carter officiating. Burial will

   Survivors include his wife, Coradean Bishop of Tuscaloosa; daughter, Angela 
Bishop Spencer of Alpharetta, Ga.; sons, Harold L. Bishop Jr. and Ryan 
Sandeerson of Tuscaloosa and Robert Sanderson of Huntsville; sister, Gwendolyn 
Chambliss of Jackson, Miss.; brothers, B. V. Bishop and Edward S. Bishop Jr. of 
Jackson; and five grandchildren.  His parents, Eva and Edward Bishop Sr., and 
his brother, Ralph H. Bishop, preceded him in death.
   Dr. Bishop completed his master of arts in educational administration from 
the University of Alabama in 1972 and received his doctorate in educational 
administration in 1974. He was immediately hired as a professor at the 
university and was promoted to become assistant to the dean of the College of 
Education. During his 33-year tenure at the university, Dr. Bishop served in 
many diverse administrative positions. These positions included dormitory 
director, special assistant to the president, department chairman, special 
consultant, director of Graduate School Office of Minority Student Assistance 
Research, associate professor of education administration and professor of 
educational administration at the University of Alabama.
   Dr. Bishop also served as special consultant to the 126 school systems in 
Alabama, including Randolph County, the State Department of Education and school 
districts throughout the nation. Superintendents throughout the State of Alabama 
called on his guidance, expertise and knowledge to assist them with strategic 
planning in their school districts. He also taught and worked as a consultant in 
Latin America.     He was selected to present papers on educational 
administration and conducted professional development workshops for staff, 
teachers and administrators throughout the Southeast.

Charlie P. Nix

   (SMITHS STATION) Charlie P. Nix, 72, of Smiths Station died Thursday, Oct. 
20, 2005, at his residence.
   Services were Saturday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m. at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel 
in Phenix City with the Rev. Skip Myers officiating. Burial followed at Fairfax 
Cemetery in Valley at 1 p.m.
   Mr. Nix is survived by his wife, Frankie R. Nix of Smiths Station; a son, 
Chuck Nix of Smiths Station; two grandchildren; one sister, Sue Traylor-Holman 
of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.
   Born July 4, 1933, in Roanoke, Mr. Nix was the son of the late Georgia King 
Nix and the late Pierce Nix, He served in the U.S. Army and was retired from 
management at Uniroyal Corp, Mr. Nix was a member of Smiths Station Baptist 
Church. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Claris Nix and Maj. James C. 
Nix, and his sister, Mildred Latham.
   The family will accept flowers, but those so desiring may make contributions

Opal Green Wilson

   (WOODLAND) Services for Opal Green Wilson, 84, of Woodland were Friday, Oct. 
21, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Daniel and 
the Rev. Greg Norred officiating. Burial followed in Liberty Grove Church 
Cemetery.
   Mrs. Wilson died Wednesday, Oct. 19, at her home.
   Mrs. Wilson is survived by two daughters, Patricia McCarley of Alabaster and 
Emily Wilson of Woodland; one son, Larry Wilson of Woodland; three grandchildren 
and four great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were James Green, R.C. Haynes, Ronald Holloway, Rusty Arrington, 
Junior Whitmore and Barry Daniel.
   A native of Randolph County, Mrs. Wilson was born May 7, 1921, daughter of 
Charlie and Mattie Daniel Green. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church 
and had been a seamstress for Sewell Manufacturing Company.  Mrs. Wilson was 
preceded in death by her husband, T.C. Wilson; her parents; one sister, Bernice 
Edwards; and one brother, Arlice Green.

James Melvin Dothard

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Retired Sgt. James Melvin Dothard, 78, of LaGrange, Ga., died 
on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   Sgt. Dothard was born April 17, 1927, in Graham, the son of the late Junious 
and Estella Dothard. On Jan. 21, 1949, he became a member of the U.S. Army and 
retired on June 30, 1970. He was a decorated officer, receiving the Vietnam 
Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Japan 20s Bars Badge and 
the Bronze Good Conduct medal. He married his wife in 1954 and shared 51 years 
of holy matrimony. In 1985, he became a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in 
West Point, Ga., and served as a deacon and assistant Bible study teacher.
   Survivors include his wife, Hattie W. Dothard; two sons, Robert Dothard of 
Atlanta and Melvin Dothard of Columbus, Ga.; one daughter, Andrea Dothard of 
Duluth, Ga.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and one sister, 
Katherine Young of Anniston.
   Funeral services were Saturday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Baptist 
Church, West Point, with the Rev. W.T. Edmondson officiating. Burial was in Park 
Hill Cemetery in Columbus.
   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethlehem Baptist Church 
Building Fund in honor of deacon James M. Dothard.

Billy Mac Bell

   (ROANOKE) Billy Mac Bell, 74, of Main St., Roanoke, died Monday, Oct. 24, 
2005.
   Mr. Bell was born Jan. 14, 1931, in Heflin to the late Roy and Lea Howard 
Bell. He was a real estate broker and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean 
Conflict.
   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters and 
brother-in-law, Pauline Sandlin and Jenny and Pete Fuller.
   Mr. Bell is survived by two daughters, Stephanie Blankenship of Carrollton, 
Ga., and Chris Boatman of Temple, Ga.; one son, Rache Bell of Buchanan, Ga.; six 
grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one niece and four nephews.
   Services for Mr. Bell will be Thursday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. at Miller Funeral 
Home Chapel, Tallapoosa, Ga. Music will be provided by Harold McWhorter. 
Pallbearers will be Roy Dean Fuller, Carlos Fuller, Mac Dewayne Sandlin, David 
Sandlin, Scott Wilson and Kenneth Hill.  Interment will follow in Randolph 
Memory Gardens, Roanoke, at 1:30 p.m. EST.
   The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral Home on Wednesday from 7 to 
9 p.m.
