Services for Leon Earl Cooper, 89, of Macon, Ga., formerly of Roanoke, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at First Baptist Church of Roanoke, with Dr. Douglas Turner officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery. Mr. Cooper died Monday, Oct 2, 2000, at Peake Health Care in Macon. A Heard County, Ga., native, Mr. Cooper was born March 2, 1911, son of John Frank and Emma Ophelia Kitchens Cooper. He was a World War II Marine veteran and had retired from Master Door Company. He was a member at First Baptist Church of Roanoke and served as a deacon since 1938 and a teacher for the Men's Bible Class for 40 years. He had been a member of the Lion's Club since 1935. Survivors include one daughter, Carol Cooper Beall of Macon; a son, Leon Earl Cooper Jr. of Southport, Conn,; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Bonner Cooper. Visitation will be at Quattlebaum Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 4. Mr. Cooper will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services on Thursday. Honorary pallbearers will be members of The Men's Bible Class. Funeral services for Dorothy Mae Liston Ward, 93, of Brandon, Fla., formerly of Roanoke, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at Roanoke First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tex Ergle officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery. Mrs. Ward died Monday, Oct. 2, at IHS Brandon Healthcare Facility in Brandon. A native of Nova Scotia, Canada, she was born July 7, 1907, daughter of Albert Hunter and Katherine Elizabeth Crosley Liston. She had been employed as a secretary with the State of Alabama and was a member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Paul Ward of Brandon; a son, Al Ward of Brandon; and a granddaughter. The family will receive friends at Roanoke First United Methodist Church for 1 until 2 p.m. on Thursday. During this time, Mrs. Ward will lie in state at the church. She was born July 22, 1927, in Roanoke to the late William Vinyard Pope and Luvenia Elizabeth Pike. She was a one-time employee of Lawler Hosiery Mill and was a retired sitter, having taken care of the elderly. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two children, Penny Sue Weaver and Wayne Terry Thomas. Survivors include two daughters, Judy Rudine Braswell of Woodland and Jackie Lou Masdon of Wedowee; one son, Randy M. Thomas of Carrollton, Ga.; three sisters, Frances P. Mr. Heard died Friday, Oct. 6, at his son's residence in Tampa, Fla., following an extended illness. Mr. Heard was born Aug. 4, 1919, in Cleburne County, son of Stell Blake Heard and Laney Frances Morrison Heard. He was a member and deacon of Pinetucky Baptist Church. He was retired from Anniston Army Depot and was an army veteran of World War II. He received the Bronze Star Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with a Bronze Star and Purple Heart with two bronze clusters. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Bates Heard, a sister, Myrtice Bates, and a brother, Robert A. Heard. Mr. Parker, a native of Randolph County, was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charlie and Bessie Trammell Parker and the oldest in a family of six boys and four girls. He was a retiree of Roanoke's Master Door Company and had also worked for Roanoke Guano Company. Mr. Parker was a devoted member of First Baptist Church, Roanoke, where he served on the Usher Board, chaired the Trustee Board for a number of years and was ordained as a deacon under former pastor E. D. Ward. He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. He is survived by two sons, Otis Parker and James Parker of Rochester, N.Y.; three daughters, Mrs. Johnnie Mae Kates and Mrs. JoAnn Sanker of Rochester and Ms. Evelyn Chappell of Roanoke; one brother, Charlie Will Parker of Wedowee; one foster brother, Solon Clark Jr. of Wedowee; three sisters, Ms. Mary Harmon of Indianapolis, Ind., and Mrs. Ruby Andrews and Ms. Louise Gooden of Wedowee; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker and bookkeeper for her family's business, an active member at First Baptist Church and a member of the Crepe Myrtle Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Cotney, in 1985. Thelma Hester Whiddon, 95, of Ashburn, Ga., died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at Phoebe Putnam Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Whiddon was born in Randolph County, Ala., on May 1, 1905, daughter of the late Madison Turner Hester and Alice Crouch Hester. She was a 1955 graduate of Teachers' College and taught in Turner, Tift and Ware counties in Georgia. She had lived in Turner County since 1970 and was a member of Harmony Baptist Church and the Adult Sunday School class. Services were at Harmony Baptist Church on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 3 p.m. with interment in the church cemetery. The Revs. Larry Dean, L. A. Pate and Jimmy Cargle officiated. Pallbearers were Bill Roberts, Buddy Whiddon, Gary Whiddon, Charlie Goff, Ray Pritchard and David Wheeler. John Walter Harman Sr. died on Labor Day, Sept. 4, 2000. Born in Wedowee on Aug. 10, 1927, he was the youngest of seven children born to Escar Hassel and Ione Langley Harman. Walter had been a resident of Santa Rosa County, Fla., since 1956 and owner of Whiting Furniture Store since 1957. He served proudly in the U.S. Maritime Service, as private in the U.S. Army and as first lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He held a degree in chemistry from Jacksonville State University. Mr. Harman was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Robert "Buck" Harman, Henry Ford Harman and Escar Harman; and two sisters, Mildred Udell and Mary Hudson. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Sara Chewning Harman; three sons, John Walter "Johnny" Harman Jr., Robert William "Bill" Harman and James Langley "Jim" Harman; daughter, Yancey Jean Narramore; six grandchildren; sister, Elaine Watson; and 14 nieces and nephews. Mrs. Ussery was born on Nov. 8, 1932, in Heard County to the late Luther Augustus Stephens and Mattie Lillian Cook Stephens. She was also preceded in death by one son, Jason Ussery. Mrs. Ussery was a beloved wife and mother and a Christian by faith. She was retired from the Unity Plant of Callaway Mills Company and lived in LaGrange most of her life. She was a member of Park Avenue Church of Christ.
