Melvis Fowler
(WEDOWEE) Melvis Fowler, 66, of Rt. 1, Wedowee, died Saturday, May 28, 1994,
at Wedowee Hospital after a short illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, May 30, at Valley Grove Primitive Baptist
Church, with Rev. Earnest Lipham and Rev. James Fant officiating. Burial was in the
adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Fowler is survived by his wife, Alice Fowler of Wedowee; his mother, Mrs. Flora
T. Fowler of Wedowee; two sister, Mrs. Verner Lewis and Mrs. Barbara Parks of Oxford;
and three brothers, Johnny Bennis Fowler of Oxford, David Dennis Fowler of Roanoke,
and Donald Fowler of Wedowee.
Pallbearers were Chester Wortham, Shane Fowler, Donnie Fowler, Eddie Creed,
Edward Creed, Shannon Freeman, Gary Lipham and Garland Loveless.
Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

Lewis Milstead
(LINEVILLE) Funeral services for Lewis Milstead, 80, of Lineville, were Monday,
May 30, 1994, at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Methodist Church, with Rev. Frank Rasbury and
Mrs. Winnie Murphree officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Milstead died Saturday, May 28 at Russell Hospital in Alexander City. He was a
native and lifelong resident of Clay County, a farmer and a member of Campbell Springs
Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife, Marie G. Milstead of Lineville; three daughters, Margaret
Kistler of Lineville, Margie Hester of Lineville, and Debra Holloway of Ashland; four
sons, William (Pee Wee) Milstead of Lineville, James Milstead of Lineville, Alvin Milstead
of Wedowee and Lynwood Milstead of Newell; one sister, Odessa Burgess of Munford;
21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

H. Y. Smith
(TUSCALOOSA) H. Y. Pepper Man Smith, 69, of Tuscaloosa died Saturday, May
28, 1994, at his residence.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in
Tuscaloosa. The Rev. Richard Emery will officiate, with burial in Memory Hill Gardens,
Memory Chapel Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Smith was a retired manager of Quality Furniture, a Spiller furniture store. He was
a World War II veteran and a member of the VFW and DAV. He was a member of the
First Wesleyan Church, a very active member of the Tuscaloosa Civitans and a volunteer
for Temporary Emergency Services.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Jones Smith of Tuscaloosa; three daughters,
Margaret Graham and Melinda Ramage of Tuscaloosa and Jeannie Oglesby of Bainbridge,
Ga. (formerly of Roanoke); two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Eudoris Patterson
(ROANOKE) Eudoris Patterson, 73, of Roanoke died Wednesday, May 25, 1994, at
Veteran's Administration Hospital in Tuskegee.
Mr. Patterson was born in Chambers County on September 25, 1920, son of the late
Herbert and Lena Patterson. He was a long-time member of Canaan Missionary Baptist
Church.
Mr. Patterson is survived by his wife, Thennia Collins Patterson; three sons, Napoleon
Patterson of Valley, Eudoris Patterson Jr. of Roanoke, and Jerome Patterson of
Columbus, Ga.; three daughters, Mrs. Gloria Murphy of Columbus, Ga., Mrs. Denise
Bradshaw of Roanoke, and Mrs. Brenda Tucker, Roanoke; 16 grandchildren,
six great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Sunday, May 29, at 1 p.m. at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church,
with Rev. William Patterson officiating.

Ida Mae Allen
(FIVE POINTS) Ida Mae Allen of Five Points, 75, died May 26, 1994, in Piedmont
Hospital, Atlanta, Ga. Services for her were at 11 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Pine Grove
United Methodist Church, LaFayette, with Rev. James E. Gresham, pastor, officiating.
Interment was in Handy Cemetery, LaFayette.
Mrs. Allen was born Nov. 19, 1918, in Chambers County, daughter of the late Mr. and
Mrs. Glenn and Mattie Allen of Five Points. She received her early education in Chambers
County and received a degree in elementary education from Tuskegee University. After
retiring from her career as a teacher, she served as a parish minister with the ministry of
Roanoke Parish of the United Methodist Church. She was a member of Pine Grove UMC,
Eastern Star Lily of the Valley Chapter No. 56 and Herion of Jericho Court No. 50.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Gwendolyn Tyler of Atlanta; two sisters, Mrs.
Abbie McDowell of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Mrs. Selena Ward of Five Points; one
brother, Kyle Allen of Forestville, Md.; her step-mother, Mrs. Malinda Jones of LaFayette;
and one granddaughter, four nieces and two nephews.
Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

James W. Mulkey
(WOODLAND) James W. Mulkey, 75, of Rt. 2, Woodland, died Wednesday, May 25,
1995, at Traylor Nursing Home, Roanoke, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 26, in Benefield Funeral Home Chapel,
with Rev. Odell Bryant officiating. Burial was in the Potash Church of God Cemetery.
Mr. Mulkey is survived by three sons, Henry Junior Mulkey of Carrollton, Ga., and
William Mulkey and John G. Mulkey, both of Woodland; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers were nephews.
Mr. Mulkey was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County and was a farmer.

(WEDOWEE) Lena Mae Duke, 84, of Rt. 1, Wedowee, died Wednesday, May 25, in
Colonial Pines Nursing Home, Oxford, after a short illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, May 27, at New Harmony Christian Church
with Rev. David Screws, Rev. Curtis Reaves and Rev. Ronnie Williams officiating. Burial
was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. Duke is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Margaret Estes of Cragford, Mrs.
Christine Reaves and Mrs. Brenda Hill of Lineville, Mrs. Jessie Johnson and Mrs. Joyce
Prater of Heflin and Mrs. Betty Ward of Tuscaloosa; two sons, Ollie Ray Duke of
Coldwater and Wynwood Duke of Lineville; 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren
and six great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were grandsons.
Mrs. Duke was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was retired
from the textile industry and was a homemaker.

Cory Scott Smith
(WEDOWEE) Cory Scott Smith, age 2, died Saturday, May 28, 1994, in Children's
Hospital, Birmingham, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m., Monday, May 30, at First Baptist Church, Wedowee,
with Revs. John Duncan and Cloyse Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Midway United
Methodist Church Cemetery.
Cory is survived by his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Tab Smith of Wedowee; one sister,
Amanda Smith; one brother, Tony Smith; and his grandparents, Fred and Betty Duncan of
Lake City, Fla., Sue Smith of Wedowee, and Talbert H. Smith, Sr., of Ocoee, Fla.
Pallbearers were Richard Smith, Greg Smith, Jeff Smith and Wayne Hughes.

James Walton Edmondson
(BARNESVILLE, Ga.) Funeral services for James Walton Edmondson, 57, of
Barnesville, formerly of Roanoke, were Friday, May 27, 1994 at 11 a.m. from
Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. S. T. Janney officiating. Burial was at Randolph
Memory Gardens.
Mr. Edmondson died Wednesday, May 25, at Spaulding Regional Hospital in Griffin,
Ga.
A resident of Barnesville for the past 15 years, Mr. Edmondson was a Randolph
County native, born May 21, 1937, son of Luther Brown and Rosie Hester Edmondson.
He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Scottsdale, Ga., and was a member of the
Masonic Lodge. Mr. Edmondson was a self-employed contractor.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Martha Jalaine Edmondson of Avondale; two sons,
James Walton Edmondson Jr. of Stockbridge, Ga., and Douglas Edward Edmondson of
Jonesboro, Ga., three sisters, Mrs. Luline Robins of Wellington, Fla., Mrs. Annell Nestor
of Jenkinsburg, Ga., and Mrs. Frances Otto of Kaiser, Ore.; a brother, Fred Edmondson of
Roanoke; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Members of the Roanoke Masonic Lodge served as pallbearers.
Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Cassie May Mosley
(LAFAYETTE) Cassie Mae [or May?] Mosley, 74, of LaFayette died Tuesday, May
24, 1994, at Randolph County Hospital.
Mrs. Moseley was a lifelong resident of Chambers County.
Survivors include two nieces, Mrs. Katherine Watson and Mrs. Mattie Ruth Todd of
Buffalo, N.Y.; and two nephews, Tommy L. Gates and William H. Holmes of Buffalo.
Services for Mrs. Mosley were Saturday, May 28, at 2 p.m. at Friendship Baptist
Church #2, with the Rev. R. J. Brown officiating. Interment was in the adjoining church
cemetery.
Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary of Roanoke.

Dulema Abner Johnson
(WEDOWEE) Dulema Abner Johnson, 89, of Wedowee died Saturday, June 4, 1994,
at Clay County Hospital, Ashland, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, June 6, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with
Dr. Wayne Stevens and Rev. G. K. Abner officiating. Burial was in the adjoining
cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mary John Johnny McCormick of
Wedowee, Mrs. Evelyn Yates of Wedowee and Mrs. Bobbie Jean Nolen of Nashville,
Tenn.; one son, Carl Guinwold Johnson of Moultrie, Ga.; five sisters, Mrs. Novella
Bradley, Mrs. Alma Abner and Mrs. Geneva Emery of Wedowee, Mrs. Lora Childers of
Weaver, and Mrs. Willie Jo Webb of Valley; three brothers, Merl Abner of Ashland,
Buford Abner of Indianapolis, Ind., and Braxton Abner of Valley; 13 grandchildren;
21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were grandsons.
Mrs. Johnson was a native of Clay County who had lived a number of years in
Randolph County. She was a homemaker.

Mattie Faye Houston
(COLUMBIA, S.C.) Mattie Faye Watkins Houston, 47, of Columbia, S.C., died
Thursday, June 2, 1994, at Richland Memorial Hospital, Columbia, after an extended
illness.
Funeral services for Ms. Houston were Tuesday, June 7, at 2 p.m. at First Missionary
Baptist Church, Roanoke, with Rev. L. J. Wright, pastor, officiating. Burial was in
Skyview Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Welch.
Ms. Houston, the former Faye Watkins, was a native of Roanoke, a member of First
Baptist Church, and a graduate of Randolph County Training School. A resident of
Columbia, S.C., for 23 years, she was retired from the South Carolina Department of
Mental Health, where she was employed for 21 years as a clerical specialist. She was a life
member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4262, and a member of
Unit 215 of the American Legion.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Shunta Trammell of Columbia; her mother, Mrs.
Annie Mae Watkins of Roanoke; two brothers, Arthur Ray Watkins of Tacoma, Wash.,
and George McClendon of Roanoke; one sister, Mrs. Annie Sue Smith of Roanoke; and
an adopted sister, Dorothy Jean Davis of Columbia.
Clark Memorial Funeral Service of Roanoke was in charge of arrangements.

Wanda Arrington
(WOODLAND) Wanda Arrington, 32, of Woodland died suddenly on Saturday, June
4, 1994, in Tanner Medical Center.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Monday, June 6, at Liberty East Baptist Church, with
Revs. Doris Williamson, Jerry Trawick and Gene Wilkinson officiating. Burial was in the
adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. Arrington is survived by her husband, Gene Arrington of Woodland; a two-year-
old daughter, Laci Shea Arrington; two sons, Justin Wade Cooper and Mitchel Ryan
Cooper, both of Woodland; her mother, Mrs. Barbara Jean Davenport of Rome, Ga.; her
father, Johnny Davenport of Tallapoosa, Ga.; and two brothers, Johnny Wayne Davenport
of Ranburne and Bryant Davenport of Graham.
Pallbearers were Joey Arrington, Monty Cantrell, Bob Stapler, Rusty Arrington,
Ronnie Moncus and Paul Brown.
Mrs. Arrington was a native of Georgia. She had lived in Randolph County for the past
three years. She was a homemaker.

William Howard Hand
(ROCK MILLS) Funeral services for William Howard Hand, 64, of Rock Mills were
Monday, June 6, 1994, at 3 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Al
Thornton officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mr. Hand died Sunday, June 5, at his residence after an extended illness.
A lifelong resident of Rock Mills, Mr. Hand was a Randolph County native, born
October 29, 1929, son of Alpha Omega and Beddie Bell Sheppard Hand. He had worked
in the spinning section at Wehadkee Mills for 47 1/2 years, and was a member of Rock
Mills United Methodist Church and Roanoke Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Macie Jo Yarbrough Hand of Rock Mills; two
daughters, Mrs. Delores Burgess of Roanoke and Mrs. Rena Pike of Rock Mills;
five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Chattahoochee Hospice.
Pallbearers were Joe Ballow, Junior Rollins, Fred Andrews, Ronnie Whaley, Hugh
Baker and Perry Baker.

(ROANOKE) Graveside services for Brittany Alisa Nobley, infant daughter of Steven
and Alisa Nobley of Roanoke, were Monday, June 6, 1994, at 3 p.m. from Cedarwood
Cemetery, with Revs. S. T. Janney and Harold Bonner officiating.
The infant died Saturday, June 4, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
Survivors include her parents; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Nobley and Mr.
and Mrs. Leonard Sledge, all of Roanoke; and several aunts and uncles.

(WEDOWEE) Jerrlee Tolbert Nunn, 55, of Wedowee died Tuesday, May 31, 1994, at
Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
Mrs. Tolbert was born in Randolph County March 17, 1939, daughter of the late
Charlie Tolbert, Sr. and Bertha Sterling Tolbert. She was a member of Deliverance
Temple, Roanoke.
Funeral services were Saturday, June 4, at 3 p.m. at Deliverance Temple, with Bishop
C. L. Wilkes officiating.
Survivors include her husband, Curtis Nunn, Sr., of Wedowee; one daughter, Mrs.
Jearlene Clark of Wedowee; one son, Curtis Nunn, Jr., of Wedowee; five brothers, T. C.
Tolbert, Robert Tolbert and Orad Tolbert of Anniston, Charlie Tolbert, Jr., of Wedowee,
and Charles Finley of Rochester, N.Y.; three sisters, Mrs. Ruby Truss of Anniston, and
Mrs. Helen Drake and Mrs. Hattie M. Finley of Detroit, Mich.; five grandchildren; and
many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Hubert C. Bailey
(BIRMINGHAM) Hubert C. Bailey of Birmingham died May 13, 1994.
Funeral services at Elmwood Chapel, Birmingham, were at 12:30 p.m. Monday, May
16, with Rev. Rick Cato officiating. Burial was in Eastaboga Baptist Cemetery, Elmwood
Chapel Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Bailey was born July 27, 1919, grew up in Roanoke, and was 1938 graduate of
Handley High School. He was a member of Midfield First Baptist Church, a World War II
veteran, a graduate of Auburn University, a member of Auburn Alumni Association, a
member of Alabama Pharmacists Association, retired owner of Bailey Rexall Drug Store
in Midfield, and a member of Midfield Lions Club, Roanoke Lodge No. 132 F&AM for
50 years, Zamora Shrine, Scottish Rite, Metro York Rite Bodies, Dinar Grotto and
Cunningham Chapter No. 24 OES of Birmingham.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Bailey of Roanoke; a
sister, Myrtle Smith of Powder Spring[s], Ga., and two brothers, Otis A. Bailey of
Roanoke and Henry A. Bailey of Salisbury, N.C.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Louise S. Bailey; one brother, Arvin K. Bailey
of Durham, N.C.; and three sisters, Irma Parker and Agnes Childers of Powder Springs,
Ga., and Barnelle Cox of Mableton, Ga.

Frances L. Williams
(GRAHAM) Frances L. Williams, 86, of Rt. 1, Graham, died Tuesday, May 31, 1994,
in Bowdon Area Hospital following an extended illness.
Mrs. Williams was born in Randolph County on June 30, 1907, daughter of the late
James P. and Ida Lovvorn Rice. Mrs. Williams was a lifelong resident of this area, a
member of Smyrna Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Onie Velon Williams, on Aug. 14, 1972.
Survivors include three sons, Blake Williams of LaFayette, Leon Williams of Atlanta,
Ga., and Thamous Williams of Graham; two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith and Mrs.
Dera Merrill, both of Graham; 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and five
great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, J. H. Rice and Doyle Rice, both of LaGrange,
Ga.; one sister, Mrs. Mittie Lou Shaddix of LaGrange; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Thursday, June 2, at 4 p.m. EDT from Smyrna Baptist Church,
with Rev. Milford Ballinger, Rev. Rex Williams and Rev. Larry Lovvorn officiating. Music
was by Penny Looney.
Pallbearers were Gay Shaddix, James Rice, Emery Rice, Roy Williams, Mark Rice,
Wendell Williams, Dan Albright and William Hewitt. Interment was in the church
cemetery.

Rev. Alvin L. Dempsey
(HEFLIN) Rev. Alvin L. Dempsey, 78, of Rt. 1, Heflin, died Wednesday, June 1, 1994,
at Wedowee Hospital.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, June 3, at Pilgrim's Rest Baptist Church, with
Rev. Zenus Windsor and Randy Morris officiating. Burial followed in the adjoining
cemetery.
The Rev. Mr. Dempsey is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sarah Dempsey; five daughters,
Mrs. Sara Huddleston, Mrs. Renae Owen and Mrs. Charlene Owen of Heflin, Mrs. Connie
Bain of Anniston and Mrs. Becky Armstrong of Talladega; two sons, Rev. Steve Dempsey
of Heflin and Calvin Brooks of Oxford; two sisters, Mrs. Lois Butterworth and Mrs.
Vernell Strup of Oxford; two brothers, Hershel Dempsey of Oxford and Glen Dempsey of
Section; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Buddy Parris, Charlie Parris, Eddie Parris, Tony Coley, Buddy Coley
and Bobby Coley. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of churches formerly pastored by
the deceased.
The Rev. Mr. Dempsey was a veteran of World War II, a member of Mt. Pisgah
Baptist Church and a minister in Randolph and Clay counties for 33 years. He was retired
from Anniston Ordnance Depot.

John D. Rowland
(ROANOKE) John D. Rowland, better known as J. D. Rowland, 87, of Roanoke
died Tuesday morning, May 31, 1994, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika, after an
extended illness.
Services for Mr. Rowland were Saturday, June 4, at 2 p.m. from Mount Pisgah Baptist
Church, Roanoke, with Rev. R. L. Heflin, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the adjoining
cemetery.
Mr. Rowland was a native of Roanoke. He joined New Harmony Baptist Church,
LaFayette, at a very early age. After working 30 years at Pellam Service Station in
downtown Roanoke, he and his wife left the area to reside in Tip [sic - Tipp] City, Ohio,
for about 10 years, returning to Randolph County in 1980. He was a member of Mount
Pisgah Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Edith Rowland; three sons, John David Rowland of
Roanoke, Clinton Rowland of West Point, Ga., and Gordon Rowland of LaGrange, Ga.;
one daughter, Mrs. Mae Joe Rutlin of LaGrange; one step-daughter, Mrs. Dorothy
Massey of Chicago, Ill., and 21 grandchildren.
Services were provided by Clark Memorial Funeral Service in Roanoke.

(LAFAYETTE) Melvin Fennie, 78, of LaFayette died Thursday, June 2, 1994, at his
residence.
Mr. Fennie was retired from West Point Pepperell and was a member of Leander
Baptist Church.
Funeral services were Tuesday, June 7, at 3 p.m. at Leander Baptist Church,
Davidston, with Rev. T. L. Schell officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Lucille Hardnett of LaFayette; one son, Howard
L. Fennie of Wadley; one sister, Mrs. Katie Lane of Anniston; and one brother, Neely
Fennie of Alexander City.

Iva Nichols Garrett
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Iva Nichols Garrett, 81, of Roanoke were Friday,
June 10, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Revs. Gary Baugh and
David Parker officiating. Burial was at Center Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Garrett died Wednesday, June 8, at Randolph County Hospital.
A native of Chambers County, Mrs. Garrett was born Nov. 28, 1912, daughter of
Homer and Ida Prescott Ford. She had worked for Handley Mills and was a member of

Mrs. Poor died Sunday, June 12, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
A Randolph County native, Mrs. Poor was born March 24, 1914, daughter of Newman
Thomas and Frances Elzia Edwards White. She had worked as an inspector for Palm
Beach and was a member of Shady Creek Church and the Lebanon Homemakers Club.
Her husband, Rev. William P. Poor, preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Jewell Howle and Mrs. Myrtis Loveless, both of
Heflin; three brothers, Alton White of Heflin, Elbert E. White of Dayton, Ohio, and
Newman Junior White of Saks; and several nieces and nephews.

(WEDOWEE) Juanita H. Lovvorn, 71, of Wedowee died Friday, June 10, 1994, at
Wedowee Hospital.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 12, at First Baptist Church of Wedowee,
with Revs. Bob Karcher, Jimmy Carr and John Duncan officiating. Burial was in
Wedowee City cemetery.
Mrs. Lovvorn is survived by one daughter, Hilda Lovvorn of Wedowee; one son,
Tommy Lovvorn of Wedowee; one sister, Mrs. Beula Haynes of LaFayette; and one
brother, Lovvorn Holmes of Rockford.
Pallbearers were deacons of First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Lovvorn was a native of Marengo County who had lived most of her life in
Randolph County. She was the daughter of the late D. C. Holmes and Eva Norris. She
was preceded in death by her husband, T. J. Lovvorn. She was retired as secretary to the
Title One coordinator for Randolph County, a member of AEA and Retired Teachers of
Randolph County, and a member of First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Richter died Friday, June 10, at Springhill Memorial Hospital in Mobile.
A native of Savannah, Ga., Mrs. Richter was born April 7, 1911, daughter of Charles
F. Wiehrs, Sr. and Julia Rusalie Schaffer Wiehrs. She earned her B.S. degree from the
University of Georgia and had worked as a dietician for Southern Union Junior College.
Mrs. Richter had resided in Wadley for 25 years before moving to Mobile 3 1/2 years ago.
Survivors include a daughter, Lee Richter Mabrey of Wilmer; a son, Rudolph C.
Richter, Jr. of Atlanta; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A native of Randolph County, Mr. Nix was a retired employee of Fairfax Mill and also
a former employee of Goodyear Tire Co., Hogansville. He was a Methodist.
Mr. Nix is survived by five sisters, Wilma White of Cusseta, Bernice Fetner and Gladys
Nolen of Roanoke, Willie Jo Newton of Huguley and Millierea Brown of Shawmut; and
one brother, W. C. Nix of LaFayette.

Saturday, June 11, 1994, at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton Ga., after a brief illness.

Son Funeral Home in Franklin, with the Revs. Joe Britt and Kenneth Awbrey officiating.
Interment was in the Ephesus Cemetery in Heard County. Vocal music was rendered by

Mr. McCormick had lived in Heard County the past 20 years. He was a supervisor in

William Carl Henderson
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for William Carl Henderson, 74, of Route 2, Roanoke,
were Friday, June 17, 1994, at 3 p.m. from Bethel East Baptist Church, with Revs. S. T.
Janney and Ray Runyan officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Henderson died Thursday, June 16, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
A Randolph County native, Mr. Henderson was born April 25, 1920, son of Dan and
Pallie Starks Henderson. He was a WWII Army veteran and a member of Bethel East
Baptist Church, and had worked as a weaver.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Pauline Palmer Henderson of Roanoke; a son, Wayne

Oscar Lee Monagan II
(ROANOKE) Oscar Lee Monagan, 75, of Roanoke died Wednesday, June 15, 1994, at
Capital Hill Medical Center, Montgomery, after an extended nursing home confinement.
Funeral services were Sunday, June 19, at 2 p.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church,
Roanoke, with Rev. Michael Strong, pastor, officiating. Burial was in East Roanoke
Cemetery.
Mr. Monagan was a native of Chambers County. He was married to the late Mary
Eleanor Baker Monagan, who preceded him in death in 1966. Three of his 11 children
(Oscar Lee, III, George David and Shirley Ann) also preceded him in death. In the 1940s
he came to Roanoke, where he worked for several years with Roanoke Guano Company
and the city of Roanoke. Despite a job-related disability, he was a loyal member of Bethel
United Methodist Church, where he served faithfully as Sunday school superintendent and
adult class teacher. He also served many years as a Boy Scout master and was a member
of Western Lodge 538 of the Prince Hall Masons, Order of the Royal Arch. He served a
number of years as the Worthy Patron of the Lily White Chapter, Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include six daughters, Ms. Mary Ford of Roanoke, Mrs. Idella Stone of
Atlanta, Mrs. Edna Olds of Birmingham, Mrs. Virginia Sweet and Mrs. Betty Brown of
Tulsa, Okla., and Ms. Annie Ruth Monagan of Roanoke; two sons, Charlie Frank
Monagan of LaFayette and Bobby Lewis Monagan of New York; 23 grandchildren and
five great-grandchildren.

(GRAHAM) Mrs. Jim Tommie Lovvorn, 82, of Route 1, Graham, died Wednesday,
June 15, 1994, at Higgins General Hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Randolph County, Ala., March 12, 1912, daughter of the late Jim T.
and Vornie Cochrin Johnson. Mrs. Lovvorn was a member of Bethlehem Campground
First United Methodist Church and was a retired employee of Arrow Co., East Point, Ga.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Heaton Lovvorn on June 3, 1972.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Friday, June 17, at 2 p.m. (EDT) from Campground Methodist
Church with Rev. W. M. Wiggins and Rev. Lee Roy Shaw officiating. Interment services

Dr. Foster was a native of Roanoke and a 1970 graduate of Randolph County Training
School. He received his B.S. degree from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa in 1974, his
master's degree from Atlanta University and his medical degree from Irvine School of
Medicine, Irvine, Calif.
Survivors include a daughter, Niva Annette Foster of Mission Viejo; his mother, Mrs.
Annie Ruth Foster of Roanoke; two brothers, William Foster of Roanoke and Blake
Foster of Atlanta; five sisters, Mrs. Brenda Smith and Mrs. Mary Rowland of Roanoke,

Valley area all of his life and had served one tour of duty with the U.S. Army.

the late Pierce and Lorena Howell Lee.

Jimmie Dora Howell Taylor
(TALLASEE) Jimmie Dora Howell Taylor of Tallasee, formerly of Five Points, died
June 14, 1994, at her home.
Mrs. Taylor was born to the late Jimmie A. and Mollie Bell Howell on Oct. 18, 1904,
in Stroud. She joined Rehope Baptist Church at an early age and was active in church
work, namely, Sunday school, Missionary Society, note singing, choir, etc. Her husband,
Grady L. Taylor, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Taylor is survived by one son, James R. Taylor of Tallassee; two grandchildren,
Largwin Taylor of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Dialetta Taylor of Huntsville; five great-
grandchildren, all of Chattanooga, and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 17, from Rehope Baptist Church,
LaFayette, with Revs. H. L. Jones, S. Johnson, O. D. Hill and R. L. Heflin officiating.

Thomas Milford Messer
(WOODLAND) Thomas Milford Hop Messer, 72, of Woodland died Tuesday, June
14, 1994, in West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 16, at Zion Baptist Church, with Rev.
Roger Woodard and David Daniel officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Messer is survived by his wife, Martha L. Messer of Woodland; two daughters,
Barbara M. Traylor of LaGrange and Pat M. Laney of Ranburn[e]; three sisters, Mrs.
Ruby Sears and Mrs. Mildred McManus of Woodland and Mrs. Edith Williamson of Tyus,
Ga.; one brother, Olin Bud Messer of Wedowee; and seven grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Jamie Traylor, Brad Laney, Kenneth Messer, Tommy Messer, Larry
Joe Messer, Steve Sears and Terry Messer.
Mr. Messer was a native of Carroll County, Ga., son of the late Jody Worth and Vastie
Prestridge Messer. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Judy Perry. He was a
veteran of World War II, had retired from work in ammunition supply at Bynum and was
a member of the VFW and Zion Baptist Church.

Bertha H. Myers
(LINEVILLE) Bertha H. Myers, 75, of Rt. 1 Lineville, died Tuesday, June 21, 1994, at
Clay County Hospital, Ashland, after an extended illness.
Graveside services were at Wedowee City Cemetery, Wedowee, at 11 a.m. Thursday,
June 23, with Rev. Tom Roberts officiating.
Mrs. Myers is survived by two daughters [sic - children?], Mrs. Gloria Mae Palmer of
Skaggsville, Md., and Roosevelt Robey Jr.; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Dutton, James Dutton, James Dutton Jr., Clarence William
Crider and Steve Scroggins.
Mrs. Myers, a native of Maryland, had lived in Randolph County for the past four
years.

Robert Edward Robbie Taft
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Robert Edward Robbie Taft, 23, of Route 3,
Roanoke, were Saturday, June 25, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Roanoke First United Methodist
Church, with Rev. Milton Booth officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mr. Taft died Thursday, June 23, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mr. Taft was born in Roanoke on June 30,
1970. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, and of the Roanoke Softball League
and held a black belt in karate. He was employed by Pierce Meadows Construction.
Survivors include his financee, Jennifer Sams of Franklin, Tenn.; his father, Waymon
Taft, and his wife, Trude, of Roanoke; his mother, Linda Horton, and her husband, Dave,
of Franklin, Tenn.; his grandparents, William R. and Bernice Taft of Roanoke, Jean
Spillman of Hartsville, S.C., and W. J. Watson Jr. of Franklin, Tenn.; a brother, Stephen
David Taft of San Diego, Calif.; and two sisters, Ashley Horton of Birmingham and
Bronwyn Horton of Franklin, Tenn.
Pallbearers were Jim Dunn, Chuck Fisher, Lucky Fisher, Lincoln Whaley, Jeremy
Holmes and Troy Frost.

Mary Frances Pogue
(ROANOKE) Mary Frances Pogue, 61, of Roanoke died Thursday, June 23, 1994, in
Valdosta, Ga.
Miss Pogue was a lifelong resident of Roanoke. She was a member of the East
Roanoke Church of God, where she served as assistant church secretary, Sunday school
teacher and president of the ushers board.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Nora B. Wright of Roanoke; a brother, John Manley
Grier of Atlanta, Ga.; and one aunt, Mrs. Gladys Haliburton of LaGrange, Ga.
Services for Miss Pogue were Monday, June 27, at 3 p.m. from East Roanoke Church
of God, with Elder Nathaniel McGriff and Bishop Stephen Ackey officiating. Interment
was at Skyview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were deacons of East Roanoke Church of God.
Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary of Roanoke.

Carolyn Mullery
(PLEASANTON, Calif.) Graveside services for Carolyn Mullery, 43, of Pleasanton,
Calif., formerly of Roanoke, were Tuesday, June 28, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Randolph
Memory Gardens, with Rev. Milton Booth officiating.
Mrs. Mullery died of heart failure Wednesday, June 22, at Valley Care Medical Center
in Pleasanton.
She was born in LaFayette, lived in Roanoke until the age of nine years and then
resided in Montgomery. She attended the University of Tennessee, earning a master's
degree in computer science, and was vice president of marketing for GE/Calma in Milpitas
until health problems forced her to retire in 1988.
She was active in Presbyterian Community Church, the Pleasanton Newcomers and the
Assistance League.
She is survived by her husband of 12 years, Michael Mullery of Pleasanton, and her
mother, Sue Ashcraft of Montgomery.

Annie Lee Williamson Stephens
(FRANKLIN, Ga.) Annie Lee Williamson Stephens, 86, of Franklin, Ga., died at Ross
Memorial Convalescent Center in Kennesaw, Ga., Monday, June 27, 1994, after several
years of declining health.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 29, at 3 p.m. from the Prospect United
Methodist Church in Heard County, with the Rev. Marlin White officiating. Interment will
be in Randolph Memory Gardens, Roanoke, Ala. Vocal music was [sic - will] be rendered
by Shane Jackson, accompanied at the piano by Ms. Kathy Jackson. Congregational music
was [sic - will] also [be] rendered.
Pallbearers were N. V. Williamson, Harold Williamson, Jerry Williamson, Chris
Jackson, Terry Jackson and Oliver Jackson.
Mrs. Stephens was a lifelong resident of Heard County. She was a retired sewing
machine operator from Callaway Mills in LaGrange and was a member of the Canaan
Primitive Baptist Church. She was the wife of the late Crispen C. (Tip) Stephens.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Faye Jackson and Mrs. Neel Cole, both of
Franklin, Mrs. Emily Thompson of Marietta, Ga., and Mrs. Julie Stephens of Los Gatos,
Calif.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Dr. Mary Cozard of
Oklahoma City, Okla., two brothers, Hulette Williamson of LaGrange and Dr. Ralph
Williamson of Avondale Estates, Ga.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
