Myrtle Odessa Yarbrough
(ROANOKE) Graveside services for Myrtle Odessa Yarbrough, 92, of Roanoke will
be Wednesday, Aug. 3, 1994 at 2 p.m. at Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Yarbrough died Monday, Aug. 1, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
A Randolph County native, Mrs. Yarbrough was born Sept. 18, 1901, daughter of
James Henry and Betty Boyd Bailey. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethany
Lime Christian Church. Her husband, Loyd Velma Yarbrough, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Doris M. East of Rock Mills; a son, James H.
Yarbrough of Tucker, Ga.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family requests no flowers and suggests memorial contributions to a local church
or the charity of your choice.

Ephriam Turner Jr.
(ROANOKE) Ephriam Turner Jr., 72, of Roanoke died Wednesday, July 27, 1994, at
Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke, following an extended illness and confinement.
Services were Saturday, July 30, at 2 p.m. from Hopewell Baptist Church, Abanda,
with Rev. J. H. Walker, pastor, officiating.
Mr. Turner, a native of Chambers County, was the son of the late Ephriam and Dora
Griffin Turner. He was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church, Abanda.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ethel Turner of Roanoke; five daughters, Ms. Dorothy
Ann Turner and Ms. Brenda Turner of Roanoke, Ms. Luverne Turner of Tampa, Fla., Ms.
Ethel Mae Gates of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mrs. Sandra Dean Jones of Opelika; one son,
Eddie Charles Turner of Carrollton, Ga.; one brother, Willie Lee Turner of Opelika; and
four grandchildren.
Services were provided by Clark Memorial Funeral Service in Roanoke.

Durell Carson
(PHENIX CITY) Durell Carson, 77, of Phenix City died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 1994, at
Phenix Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Aug. 4, at 2 p.m. at Summerville United Methodist
Church, Phenix City, with burial in Lakeview Memory Garden.
Mr. Carson was a Wadley native, born April 14, 1917, to Walter G. and Carrie Pearson
Carson. He retired from Alabama Power Company in 1979 after 32 years. He was a
long-time member of Summerville United Methodist Church, a member of the church
choir, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. LaMerle Carson of Phenix City; a daughter, Mrs.
Linda McDaniel of Phenix City; a sister, Mrs. Edna Harris of Anniston; five brothers, Edd
Carson and Neal Carson of Wadley, Elton Carson of Valley, Harlice Carson of Phenix
City, and Fred Carson of Ashland; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary in Phenix
City.

Pat Tomlinson
(LAFAYETTE) Pat Tomlinson, 69, of LaFayette died Thursday, July 28, 1994, at
University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham.
Funeral services were at Chapel Hill Methodist Church in LaFayette on Saturday, July
30, with interment in LaFayette Cemetery. Les Brown officiated.
Mrs. Tomlinson was a native of North Carolina, born July 16, 1925. She was a member
of Chapel Hill Methodist Church of LaFayette.
Mrs. Tomlinson is survived by her husband, Jack Tomlinson of LaFayette; two sons,
Terry Tomlinson of Opelika and Nick Tomlinson of Houston, Texas; one sister, Leacy
Moore of Opelika; and five grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chapel Hill Methodist Church
building fund.

Rosa L. Busbee
(WADLEY) Rosa L. Busbee, 96, of Route 2, Wadley died July 30, 1994 at Clay
County Hospital, Ashland.
Funeral services for Mrs. Busbee will be at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Wadley,
Thursday, August 4, at 1 p.m. with Rev. C. Reese officiating. Interment will be in the
church cemetery.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Celestine Heard of Wadley, Mrs. Hartence
Battle of Birmingham and Mrs. Zenobia Horton (Flex) and Mrs. Virginia Hurley
(Williams) of Dayton[,] Ohio; 21 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and five
great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Alegra Willas of Los Angeles, Calif.
Mrs. Busbee was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, a member of the
Missionary Society, a Sunday school teacher and an active member of the Bowen East
District.

Luna Hale Windsor
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Luna Hale Windsor, 84, a former resident of Amberwood
Apartments, LaGrange, died Friday, July 22, 1994, at West Georgia Medical Center after
several weeks of illness.
Graveside service[s] were Sunday at 2 p.m. in Shadowlawn Cemetery, with Rev. Steve
Comer officiating.
Mrs. Windsor, born Aug. 22, 1909, in Randolph County, Ala., was the daughter of the
late John W. and Lizzie Waldrep. She had lived in LaGrange most of her life and was a
Baptist and former co-owner and operator of Jim Hale's Grocery on Hamilton Road.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Junior Taylor of LaGrange;
three step-daughters, Mrs. Gordie Cliett and Mrs. Lillian Nelson, both of LaGrange, and
Mrs. Betty Bailey of Morrow, Ga.; two step-sons, Billy McClendon of LaGrange and Bob
McClendon of Fort Valley, Ga.; a sister, Mrs. Dillie Mae Marshall of Roanoke; and
several step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Garil O. Burdette
(CRAGFORD) Funeral services for Garil O. Burdette, 81, of Cragford were Tuesday,
Aug. 2, 1994, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel of Lineville, with Rev. Randy Morris
and Rev. Jessie Taylor officiating. Burial was in Clay County Memory Gardens.
Mr. Burdette died Sunday, July 31, at Clay County Hospital.
A native of Randolph County, he had lived in Clay County for most of his life. He was
a farmer and wood producer and a member of Cragford Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Alma Burdette of Cragford; three sons, Dewayne
Burdette and Dwight Burdette of Cragford and Gerald Burdette of Ashland; one
grandson, Jamie Burdette of Cragford, and one granddaughter, Susan Pate of Lineville;
and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Jamie Burdette, Greg Pate, Burford Taunton, Edgar May, Ricky Bolt
and Greg Kelly.

Carl C. Bowen Sr.
(THOMSON, Ga.) Carl C. Bowen Sr., 79, of Thomson, Ga., died Wednesday, July 13,
1994, at McDuffie County Hospital.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. Friday at Zoar United Methodist Church in Stapleton, Ga.,
with the Revs. Scott Mancel and Otis Bowen Jr. officiating. Burial was in the church
cemetery.
Mr. Bowen, a native of Randolph County, Ala., had retired as a teacher after having
taught in Warren and Screven County schools. He was a member of Zoar United
Methodist Church, where he was past treasurer, Sunday school teacher and member of the
official board. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World Lodge 982 and was an
Air Force veteran of WWII, having served as a staff sergeant in Okinawa.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtice Palmer Bowen; a son, Carl C. Bowen Jr. of
Thomson; a daughter, Jeannie Bowen of Atlanta; a brother, Emmitt O. Bowen of
Peachtree City, Ga.; and a granddaughter, Shelley Bowen of Thomson.

Billie Miles Bean
(NEWELL) Billie Miles Bean, 59, of Rt. 1, Newell, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 1994, in
Clay County Hospital, Ashland, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, at Cavers Grove Christian Church,
with Revs. Gordon Taylor, Billy Todd and Anthony Herren officiating. Burial was in the
adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. Bean is survived by her husband, Shearl Bean of Newell; four daughters, Mrs.
Sandra Alsobrook of Newell, Mrs. Sherry Yarbrough of Rock Mills, Mrs. Cathy Florence
of Newell and Mrs. Wanda White of Newell; six grandchildren; five step-children, Gary
Bean of Lineville, Mrs. Denise Medlock of Memphis, Tenn., Mrs. Donna Thompson of
Paduckah [sic], Ky., Mrs. Dena Brewer of Murphreesboro, Tenn. and Stephen Bean of
Lineville; five step-grandchildren [sic]; seven sisters, Hazel White, Marcella Waters, Glen
Higgins, Gwen Sherman and Eloise Welch of Lineville, Dorris Mellon of Talladega and
Delores Bible of Tucker, Ga.; and two brothers, Rev. Valter Taylor of Lineville and
Novice Taylor of Tucker, Ga.
Pallbearers were Howard Welch, Bill Nelson, Vince Nobley, Gary Bean, Stephen Bean
and Clarence Morton.
Mrs. Bean was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was retired as a
supervisor at Sewell Manufacturing Company and was a member of Cavers Grove
Christian Church.

Ruth Weathers
(ROANOKE) Ruth Weathers, 89, of Roanoke died Saturday, July 30, 1994, at her
residence in Roanoke.
Services for Mrs. Weathers were on Thursday, August 4, at 2 p.m. from Deliverance
Temple Church of the Living God in Roanoke, Strozier Street, Bishop C. L. Wilkes,
pastor, officiating. Burial was at East Roanoke Cemetery.
Mrs. Weathers was one of nine children born into one of Randolph County's oldest
African-American families. Her parents were the late Mr. Mance and Mrs. Pearl Turner
Finch. She was the widow of the late Alvin Weathers. She was a member of Bethel United
Methodist Church and served many years as treasurer for United Methodist Women. In
later life she regularly attended the Deliverance Temple Church of the Living God in
Roanoke.
Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Alice Turner of Macon, Ga.; a devoted nephew, Billy
Joe Finch of Roanoke; and a devoted niece, Mrs. Kathy Royston Pate of Roanoke.

Dorothy T. Chappell
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy T. Chappell, 63, of Route 2, Roanoke
were Saturday, Aug. 6, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Rock Mills United Methodist Church, with
Rev. David Holmes and Dr. Douglas Turner officiating. Burial was at the Fellowship
Baptist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Chappell died Thursday, Aug. 4, at her home.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born June 24, 1931, daughter of
Avery and Bessie Pinkard Taylor. She was a member of Rock Mills Methodist Church and
had worked as a seamstress with Palm Beach. Her husband, Charlie Chappell, preceded
her in death.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Sanford and Shelia Chappell of Roanoke,
and two grandsons, Charles S. Chappell Jr. (Chuck) and Chantlee S. Chappell, also of
Roanoke.
Pallbearers were Phillip Taylor, Jamie Taylor, Bobby Taylor, Steve Nobley, Mike
Sheppard and Bobby Nobley.

Bobby J. Holloway
(FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla.) Bobby J. Holloway, 59, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.,
died Friday, Aug. 5, 1994, in Pensacola, Fla. as the result of injuries sustained during a
waverunner accident in Destin, Fla.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Wedowee City
Cemetery, Wedowee, with Bro. W. C. Cofield officiating.
Mr. Holloway is survived by his father, W. Denver Holloway of Wedowee; one brother
and sister-in-law, Harold and Jeanette Holloway of Wedowee; nieces and nephews Jean
Murphy, Keith Holloway and Lisa Kierbow; and long-term friends and business partners
Sam Neville, Mike Jennings and Rick Kiner.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9 in Little Chapel Funeral Home
Chapel, Fort Walton Beach, with Revs. Mike Hesse and Brad Jones officiating.
Mr. Holloway was a native of Randolph County. He was preceded in death by his
mother, Mrs. Dinnie Holloway and one brother, Ray Holloway. He had lived in Fort
Walton Beach since 1960, where he worked for Sears Roebuck & Co. until his retirement.
He has been co-owner of Randall's Nursery and Florist for the past 13 years.

Johnny Frank Bolt
(BIRMINGHAM) The funeral services for Johnny Frank Bolt, 55, 1028 Bessemer Rd.,
Birmingham were at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 1994, at Frederick's Chapel in Opelika, with
burial in Union Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery. The Revs. Neil Bell and Charley Bolt
officiated.
Mr. Bolt, who died Wednesday, Aug. 3, at Lloyd Noland Hospital in Birmingham, was
born Aug. 24, 1938, in Alabama. He attended Unity Church of God in Bowdon, Ga. He
was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Burke Bolt.
Survivors include his step-mother Mary Kellum of Lineville; eight sisters, Joyce
Edmondson of Prattville, Carolyn Fordham of Heflin, Frances Peel of Birmingham, Laneta
Gray of Wedowee, Doris Caldwell of Bowdon, Sue Gunner of Marietta, Ga., Shirley
Waldrop of Roanoke and Kathleen Jones of Sylacauga; and three brothers, Gerald Bolt of
Roanoke, Rev. Charley Bolt of Opelika and William Bolt of Lineville.

Gordon Crowder
(FIVE POINTS) Gordon Crowder of Five Points, 84, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 1994
at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
Services for Mr. Crowder were at Five Points Baptist Church on Thursday, Aug. 4, at
3 p.m., with interment in Five Points Cemetery. Officiating ministers were Rev. Herbert
Howard and Rev. Vernon Brown.
Born in Chambers County on Jan. 27, 1910, he was a lifelong resident of Chambers
County and a member of Five Points Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer and
substitute mail carrier and was a school bus driver for 19 years.
Survivors include his wife, Eilene Crowder of Five Points; one son, dr. [sic] John
Crowder of Five Points; three sisters, Lillie C. Brown of Roanoke, Evelyn C. Turner of
Dallas, Tex., and Janet C. Awbrey of Gainesville, Fla.; and two step-grandchildren, Katy
Hester of Five Points and Will Hester of Five Points.
Pallbearers were Fuller Alsobrook, Cecil Crenshaw, Dawson Day, Dewey Stephens,
Stanley Sellers and Tom Morgan.

Lankford Huey
(WEDOWEE) Lankford Huey, 78, of Rt. 2, Wedowee, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 1994, at
his residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel,
with Rev. Bobby Jones officiating. Burial was in Wedowee City Cemetery.
Mr. Huey is survived by his wife, Nonnie Faye Huey of Wedowee; one daughter, Mrs.
Jeffie McManus of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Myrtis Frost and Mrs. Janie Austin
of Wedowee; one brother, Fred Huey of Wedowee; two grandchildren and a host of
nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Larry Brown, Bob Kirby, Paul Cosper, Rance Kirby, Heath Huey,
Derrick Huey, Sammy Huey and Shawn McManus. Honorary pallbearers were nephews.
Mr. Huey was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was retired from
Bynum as a welder. He was a member of Liberty Grove Congregational Methodist
Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Woodmen of the World, and was a veteran of
World War II.

Era Cantrell Baker
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Era Cantrell Baker, 74, of LaGrange died Saturday, August 6,
1994, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
The funeral service was conducted Monday morning, August 8, in the chapel of the
Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Sidney Shelnutt
officiated, and interment was in Randolph Memory Gardens, Rock Mills, Ala.
Mrs. Baker was born January 30, 1920, in Randolph County, Ala., daughter of the late
J. P. and Beatrice McDonald Cantrell. She had lived in LaGrange most of her life and was
a member of the Callaway Baptist Church. She was the wife of the late Everett Baker.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Janet) Lashley of LaGrange; one son,
Mack Baker of Roanoke, Ala.; one sister, Mrs. Parnell (Juanita) Hill of Hogansville; and
one granddaughter, Mrs. Michael (Tracy) Heath of LaGrange.

William Cirrell Brumbeloe
(STANDING ROCK) William Cirrell Brumbeloe, 68, of Standing Rock, died Monday,
August 22, 1994, at his residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 24, at White's Chapel United
Methodist Church, with Rev. Don Quick and Stoney Halsey officiating. Burial will follow
in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Brumbeloe, a native of Randolph County, was a veteran of World War II, a
member of White's Chapel United Methodist Church, and a retired employee of Hillside
Mill as a supply clerk. He was the son of the late Cecil and Cora Brumbeloe and was
preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Reba Brumbeloe.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Kathy Crabtree and Mrs. Dianne Benefield,
both of Roanoke; four sons, Keith Brumbeloe of Standing Rock, Kenneth Neese of
Standing Rock, and Danny Neese and Michael Neese of LaGrange; and 12 grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bob Kirby, Billy Gene Kirby, Kirby Windsor, Jamie Jackson, Wayne
Mills and Bobby Smith.
Mr. Brumbeloe will lie in state at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, until one hour
prior to funeral services and will lie in state at the church for one hour.

Robert Bob Joiner Sr.
(ROANOKE) Robert Bob Joiner Sr., 84, of Roanoke died Saturday, Aug. 27, 1994,
at his home.
Mr. Joiner was a deacon of Rehope Baptist Church, LaFayette, and was a member of
the Randolph County Recreation Association and the Prayer Band.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Christine Joiner of Roanoke; five sons, Robert,
Justice, Jim and Leon Joiner, all of Roanoke, and George Joiner of LaGrange, Ga.; eight
daughters, Lera Phillips, Nina Taylor and Ethel Treadwell, all of Roanoke, Gertrude Lewis
of Jonesboro, Ga., Elizabeth Perry of Decatur, Ga., Catherine Wheeler of Columbus,
Ohio, Betty Huffman of East Point, Ga., and Lucille Slay of Atlanta, Ga.; and
45 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Services for Mr. Joiner were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Rehope Baptist Church,
with Rev. H. L. Jones, pastor, and Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating. Interment was in Skyview
Memorial Gardens in Chambers County.
Grandsons served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were members of Western
Lodge No. 538.
Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Fred David Thomas
(BOWDON, Ga.) Fred David Thomas, 51, of Bowdon, Ga., died Thursday, Aug. 25,
1994, at Tanner Medical Center, Carrollton, Ga.
Mr. Thomas was born May 16, 1943, in Carroll County, Ga., the son of Gerald Pete
and Mamie Akers Thomas. He was a retired electrical supervisor for Southwire Company
and the recipient of Southwire's Distinguished Service Award in 1993. He was a member
of Herren's Grove Baptist Church and Tyus Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dorthe Simmons Thomas; one son, Marty Thomas of
Villa Rica, Ga.; two grandchildren; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Pete Thomas of
Carrollton; and three sisters, Mrs. Jean Farmer of Carrollton, Mrs. Patsy Howard of
LaFayette, and Mrs. Darlene Bearden of Bowdon.
Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 27, at 2 p.m. at Herren's Grove Baptist Church,
with the Rev. Ridley Parmer and the Rev. W. M. Wiggins officiating. Burial was in the
church cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Larry Nobley, Neal Harrington, Walt Driver, Charlie
Robinson, Allen Thomas, Steve Meadows and Roy Rogers.

Cindy Williamson
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Cynthia Ann Cindy Williamson, 38, of Route 3,
Roanoke, were Friday, Aug. 26, 1994, at 3 p.m. from Rock Springs Congregational
Christian Church, with Revs. Odell Bryant and E. G. Clark officiating. Burial was in the
adjoining cemetery.
Ms. Williamson died Wednesday, Aug. 24, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
A former resident of Wedowee, Ms. Williamson was a Roanoke native, born Feb. 16,
1956, daughter of Stell Bruce Williamson and the former Mildred Lee Adams. She had
worked as a seamstress and was a member of Rock Springs Congregational Christian
Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Flecia Williamson and Delilah Knight, and a son, Roy
Williamson, all of Wedowee; her mother, Mrs. Mildred Little of Five Points; three sisters,
Mrs. Diann Coker of Smiths, Mrs. Peggy Coker of Dadeville and Mrs. Becky Brown of
Anniston; three brothers, Phillip Williamson of Tifton, Ga., Melvin Williamson of Five
Points and Ronald Williamson of Valley; and a grandson.
Nephews of Ms. Williamson served as pallbearers.

Mittie Pearl Pennington
(ROANOKE) Mittie Pearl Pennington, 78, of Route 3, Roanoke, died Wednesday,
Aug. 24, 1994, at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at Midway United Methodist
Church with Revs. Cloyse Johnson, Winnie Murphree and Jeff Haven officiating. Burial
was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. Pennington was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was
retired from the former Belk-Gallant store in Roanoke and was a member of Midway
United Methodist Church and a life member of DAV.
Survivors include her husband, Alfred Pennington of Roanoke; three step-sons, Ralph
Watkins of Pasadena, Texas, Terry Watkins of Lanett and Wayne Watkins of Wedowee;
two brothers, Clarence Harmon of Valley and Buford Harmon of Pensacola, Fla.; and
eight step-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Frankie Harmon, Jimmy McCall, Douglas McCall, Jimmy Pennington,
Virgil Pennington and Keith Langley.
Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, was in charge of arrangements.

Era Boyce Weathers
(WEDOWEE) Era Boyce Weathers, 90, of Wedowee died Sunday, Aug. 28, 1994, in
Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30 at Wedowee First Baptist Church,
with the Revs. Bob Karcher and John Duncan officiating. Burial was in Wedowee City
Cemetery.
Mrs. Weathers is survived by four grandsons, Jack Weathers of Jacksonville, Fla., Ben
Weathers of Guatemala City, Guatemala, and Mike Weathers and Chris Weathers of
Anniston; two granddaughters, Beth and Clair Weathers of Anniston; one sister, Mary
Frances Ingram of Valley; one brother, Ralph Ballard of Valley, and several
great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Hulond Humphries, Faye Williams, Richard Ballard, Ronnie Young,
Rickey Daniel, Bill Wilson, Vernon Lipham and Coleman Sikes.
Mrs. Weathers was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was a
teacher in the Randolph County School System for 37 years, and was a member of
Wedowee First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew
Jackson Weathers.
