Seth Juel Brown
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Seth Juel Brown, 77, of Roanoke were Friday,
Jan. 28, 1994, at 3:30 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Gary Baugh
officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mr. Bowen died Thursday, Jan. 27, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
A resident of the Mt. Zion community for 30 years, Mr. Bowen was born Feb. 15,
1916, in Randolph County, son of Elijah Jackson and Lue Butler Bowen. He had worked
as a salesman and was a member of the Moose Club.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruby Robertson Bowen of Roanoke; two daughters,
Mrs. Linda Brady of Roanoke and Mrs. Susan Davis of Moultrie, Ga.; two sons, Roger
Bowen of LaGrange, Ga., and Don Bowen of Dalton, Ga.; two granddaughters, Stephanie
Bowen and Chrystal Davis; two sisters, Mrs. Brasley Huddleston and Miss Hazel Bowen,
both of Roanoke; and a brother, Junior Bowen of Manchester, Ga.
Pallbearers were Ernie Bowen, Joel Bowen, Jerome Bowen, Mike Dunn, J. R. Fincher
and Dick Worrell.
The family will accept contributions to the American Lung Association.
Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Audrey Spradlin
(NEWELL) Audrey Spradlin, 74, of Rt. 1, Newell, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 1994, in
Traylor Nursing Home, Roanoke, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at Union Baptist Church, with Revs.
Cecil Halsey and Darson Waters officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. Spradlin is survived by her husband, Curtis L. Spradlin of Newell; three
daughters, Mrs. Annie Waters and Mrs. Joan Whaley of Newell and Mrs. Patsy Dye of
Woodland; two sons, Leroy Spradlin of Roanoke and T. C. Spradlin of Newell;
12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Mae Boyd of Ohatchee,
Mrs. Ellie Mae Spradlin and Mrs. Dolly Knott of Graham, and Mrs. Ollie England of
LaGrange, Ga.; and two brothers, Damon Reaves of Fitzgerald, Ga., and R. C. Reaves
[of] Milltown.
Pallbearers were grandsons.
Mrs. Spradlin was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was born
Feb. 18, 1919, daughter of the late Jim and Missouri Reaves. She was retired as a
seamstress with Bremen Bowdon Investment Company and was a homemaker.

Alva G. Huey
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Alva G. Huey, 93, of Roanoke were Sunday, Jan.
30, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Milton Booth officiating.
Burial was at Midway Methodist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Huey died Friday, Jan. 28, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
A Randolph County native, she was born June 21, 1900, daughter of J. C. and
Nora Ellis Grant. She had worked as a florist and was a member of Roanoke First United
Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Allyne Landers of Roanoke; a sister, Mrs. Omie
Sikes of Wedowee; five grandchildren, ten step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren;
and two great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Landers, Bob Landers, Jim Landers, Chris Landers, Jeff
Waites and Dr. Sam Shelnutt.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the van fund of Roanoke
First United Methodist Church.

Tarsha Lanetta Knight
(WEDOWEE) Tarsha Lanetta Knight, 20, of Wedowee died on Jan. 24, 1994,
at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham from injuries received in an
automobile accident.
Miss Knight was born Sep. 30, 1973, in Randolph County, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Willis Knight, both of whom preceded her in death. She was a member of Union Chapel
United Methodist Church, the choir and the youth department.
Survivors include four brothers, Willis, Aaron, Anthony and Reco, three grandmothers,
one great-grandmother, one grandfather and many aunts, uncles and other relatives.
Services for Miss Knight were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Union Chapel Church,
with Rev. Robert L. Smith, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Walter R. Bill' Marshall
(GULFPORT, Miss.) Walter R. Bill Marshall, 91, of Gulfport, Miss., died
Wednesday, Jan. 26, 1994.
Mr. Marshall was a native of Randolph County, Ala., and a longtime resident of
Gulfport. He was in the restaurant business on the coast since 1947 until his retirement
in the 1980's.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Marshall of Gulfport; a son, Robert Bob Marshall
of Atlanta, Ga.; a stepson, Harold Jemison of Logan, W. Va.; a step-daughter, Dorothy
Klein of Gulfport; two brothers, Clarence G. Marshall, 96, of Wadley, Ala., and John H.
Marshall, 100, of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. from Riemann Funeral Home in Gulfport.
Burial was in Evergreen Gardens Cemetery of Gulfport.

Robert Lee Williams
(ATLANTA) Robert Lee Williams, 44, Atlanta, Ga., died Monday, Jan. 31, 1994,
at Integrated Health Systems, Briarcliff Road, Atlanta, after an extended illness.
Survivors include a son, Joshua Williams of Stone Mountain, Ga.; his mother, Mrs.
Catherine Williams of Atlanta; his father, Robert McClendon of Roanoke; three sisters,
Mrs. Janice Roper of Smyrna, Ga., and Mrs. Rosalyn Brown and Mrs. Lisa O'Neal of
Roanoke; and six brothers, Leonard Holliday and Donald Williams of Augusta, Ga., Eddie
Williams, Michael Williams and Luther Grier of Atlanta, and Ronald Williams of
Monroeville, Pa.
Mr. Williams was a native of Roanoke and a member of Friendship Baptist Church
(Bacon Level community), [near] Roanoke. He served in the United States armed forces
and resided in Oakland, Calif., for a short time, finally settling in Atlanta, where he worked
for the Dekalb County Maintenance and Custodial Department.
Services will be announced by Clark Memorial Funeral Service in Roanoke.

Bonnie Dennis Meacham
(FRANKLIN, Ga.) Funeral services for Mrs. Bonnie Dennis Meacham, 92, of Franklin
were Friday, Jan. 28, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Home Chapel with Revs.
Ralph Reed and Lee Crowe officiating. Burial was at Bethel Christian Church cemetery,
Heard County, Ga.
Mrs. Meacham died Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
A native and lifelong resident of Heard County, Mrs. Meacham was born July 5, 1901,
daughter of Emory Shields and Martha Almada Wingo Dennis. She had owned and
operated a grocery store and was a member of Bethel Christian Church. She was preceded
in death by her husband, John Henry Meacham, and her son, William Banks Meacham.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ruth L. Meacham of Franklin; a
granddaughter, Ms. Laurel Marie Meacham of Los Angeles, Ca.; a grandson, William
Banks Meacham Jr. of Newnan, Ga.; and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Harry of LaGrange, Ga.
Pallbearers were Hollis Wright, Pat Lipham, Richard Dennis, H. G. Dennis, John
Jackson, Shirley Sanders and Cary Bennett.

Sallie Huckeba
(HOGANSVILLE, Ga.) Sallie Bailey Huckeba, 81, of Hogansville died Monday,
Jan. 17, 1994, at Newnan Hospital, Newnan, Ga.
The funeral service was conducted Thursday afternoon, Jan. 20, in the chapel of the
Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. Dr. Jimmy Brown officiated,
and interment was in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville.
Pallbearers were Luby Johnson, Billy Joe Williamson, Larry Cook, Buck Perkins,
Ed Friend and Bill Harris.
Mrs. Huckeba was born Nov. 26, 1912, in Randolph County, Ala., daughter of the late
Robert and Eugenia Walker Bailey. She lived in Hogansville 40 years, was retired from
Uniroyal Inc., and was a member of Friendship Christian Church in Randolph County.
Survivors include her husband, W. B. Huckeba of Hogansville; one sister, Mrs. Pearl
Green of Roanoke, Ala.; two step-daughters, Mrs. Shelby Jean Epps of Union Point, Ga.,
and Mrs. Gail Sheets of Basehor, Kan.; eight step-grandchildren and five step-great-
grandchildren.
Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home of Hogansville was in charge of
arrangements.

Richard C. (R.C.) Cofield
(WEDOWEE) Richard C. R.C. Cofield, 82, of Rt. 1, Wedowee, died Wednesday,
Jan. 26, 1994, in Wedowee Hospital after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at Ava United Methodist Church, with
Rev. Gary Henderson, Rev. Earl Gordon and Rev. James Harper officiating. Burial was in
the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Cofield is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dewell Cofield of Wedowee; one daughter,
Mrs. Carrie Jean Sikes of Anniston; one son, Wayne Cofield of Huntsville; three
grandchildren; one step-grandson; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and
nephews.
Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.
Mr. Cofield was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was retired
from Bynum as a heavy equipment mechanic, and he was a farmer. He was a member of
Sawyer Lodge No. 93, F & AM, and a member of Ava United Methodist Church.
The family requests donations be made to Ava United Methodist Church cemetery
fund.

Dorothy L. Allen
(COLUMBUS, Ga.) Dorothy L. Allen, 72, of Columbus, died Monday, Jan. 31, 1994,
at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. EST Wednesday, Feb. 2,
at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus, with private burial in Parkhill Cemetery.
Mrs. Allen was born Jan. 8, 1922, in Roanoke, Ala., daughter of A. Monroe and
Dura Noles Landers. She lived in Columbus for the past 50 years and was a retired
seamstress for several dress shops in Columbus and a member of Wynnbrook Baptist
Church in Columbus. She was the widow of Ben Tillman Allen.
Survivors include one daughter, Delain Stocks and two grandsons, David Allen Stocks
and Mark Bradford Stocks, all of Smyrna, Ga.
Those so desiring may make contributions to Wynnbrook Baptist Church in Columbus.

Corrie W. Cato
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Corrie W. Cato, 93, of Roanoke were Saturday,
Jan. 29, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Danny Sumerlin
officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Cato died suddenly on Thursday, Jan. 27, at Randolph County Hospital.
A lifelong resident of Roanoke, Mrs. Cato was a native of Heard County, Ga., born
Aug. 20, 1900, daughter of Harrison Wesley and Laura Virginia Faulkner Walters. She
had worked as a weaver with Handley Mills and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church
and the Roanoke Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther S. Cato
Sr., and a son, Charles Edgar Cato.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Benefield and Mrs. Sue Taft, both of
Roanoke; a son, Luther S. Cato Jr. of Roanoke; a brother, Guy Walters of LaGrange, Ga.;
three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Trinity Baptist Church in lieu of
flowers.

Georgia Alma Brewer
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Georgia Alma Brewer, 88, of Roanoke will be held
Wednesday, Feb. 2, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Revs. Danny
Sumerlin and S. T. Janney officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Brewer died Monday, Jan. 31, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
A native of Heard County, Ga., Mrs. Brewer was born June 16, 1905, daughter of
Berry and Mary Thornton Vaughan. She had worked at Handley Mills and was a member
of Union Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Leonard Brewer of Roanoke; two sons, Gay
Leonard Brewer of Huguley and Johnnie Ray Brewer of Lanett; four grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home until the time of the service.

Wayne Wesley Rollins
(ROANOKE) Wayne Wesley Rollins, 53, of Rt. 1, Roanoke, died Thursday, Jan. 27,
1994, in the Veterans Hospital, Tuskegee, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Woodland First Congregational
Methodist Church, with Rev. Gene Bledsoe officiating. Burial was in the Rocky Branch
Cemetery.
Mr. Rollins is survived by his wife, Mrs. June Diane Rollins of Roanoke; three sons,
Scott Anthony Rollins, Donald Keith Rollins and Lance Corey Rollins, all of Roanoke;
three step-grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Flora Mae Johnson of Huguley; his father,
William Harvey Rollins of Roanoke; and five brothers, Hugh Rollins, William H. Rollins
Jr., Donnie Rollins, Earl Rollins and Paul Rollins, all of Woodland.
Pallbearers were Hugh Rollins, Junior Rollins, Donnie Rollins, Earl Rollins, Paul
Rollins, James Barnett, Steve Rollins, Wade Rollins, Kenny Rollins, Beau Rollins, Josh
Rollins, Mike Hope and John Entrekin.
Mr. Rollins was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was a veteran of
the U.S. Air Force, a member of Raymond Baptist Church, Palmetto, Ga., and a truck
driver and mechanic by trade. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willard Harvey
Rollins and Benny Ray Rollins.

Troy Hewelett Buchanan
(FRANKLIN, Ga.) Troy Hewelett Buchanan, 68, of Franklin died Thursday, Feb. 3,
1994, at Tanner Medical Center Carrollton.
He was born in Carroll County, Ga., Dec. 11, 1925, son of the late Dave and Beatrice
Laster Buchanan. Troy was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of Heaven Bound
Church of God, and a retired correctional officer with Carroll County.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lucille Golden Buchanan of Franklin; daughter Debbie
Kendrick of Franklin; sons Steve of Franklin and Michael and Dalton Buchanan of
Bowdon, Ga.; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were Sunday, Feb. 6, at 3 p.m. from Bowdon Church of God with
Rev. Franklin Walden and Rev. Herb Winegar officiating. Music was furnished by Newt
and Louise Holmes.
Pallbearers were Bobby Parmer, Kyle Tompkin, Ralph Maxwell, Tony Musgrove,
James McClendon, Moreland Adams, Tory Whitley and Wyatt Pike. Interment was in the
church cemetery.

Rosie Mae Rice
(BOWDON, Ga.) Rosie Mae Rice, 90, of Bowdon, Ga., died Friday, Feb. 4, 1994, at
Bowdon Area Hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Randolph County, Ala., May 28, 1903, daughter of the late Marion
and Tiny Nolen Daniel. Mrs. Rice was a lifelong resident of this area, a homemaker and a
member of Harmony Congregational Methodist Church, Newell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wiley J. Rice, in 1980.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Flora Williams and Mrs. Myrtice Williamson of
Bowdon, and Mrs. Florence Pool of Oxford; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren;
two great-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Howard Daniel and Edward Daniel of
Roanoke, Ray Daniel of Newell, and Guy Daniel of Stockton, Calif.; and three sisters,
Mrs. Gladys Vise of Bowdon, Mrs. Lola Holloway of Wedowee, and Mrs. Lillian Gibbs of
Ranburne.
Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at Harmony Congregational
Methodist Church, with Rev. Earnest Lipham officiating. Music was furnished by Nancy
King. Pallbearers were Jerry Williamson, Wayne Williamson, David Williamson, Jason
Williamson, Ryan Browning, Dennis Poole and Clint Madden. Interment was in the church
cemetery.

(WEDOWEE) Olin Bolt, 79, of Rt. 3, Wedowee, died Friday, Feb. 4, 1994, at
Wedowee Hospital after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at Union Hill Congregational
Methodist Church with Rev. Gus Young officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Bolt is survived by his wife: Mrs. Morine Bolt of Wedowee; two daughters,
Kathryn Holloway and Florence Holloway of Wedowee; two sons, Tony Bolt and Quinton
Bolt of Wedowee; one step-son, Garvis Lipham of Wedowee; five grandchildren;
two sisters, Lois Turley of Heflin and Eunice Turley of Oxford; and two brothers, Grover
Bolt of Heflin and Ellis Bolt of Coldwater.
Mr. Bolt was a native of Cleburne County but had lived most of his life in Randolph
County. He was a farmer and a [sic] was a veteran of World War Two.

(WEDOWEE) Mary Ethel Woods, 69, of Wedowee, formerly of Gadsden, died
Thursday, Feb. 3, 1994, at her residence in Wedowee.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. at Canaan Shining Light Baptist Church, Wedowee,
with Rev. Curtis Spidel officiating. Burial was at Lincoln Hills Cemetery, Gadsden.
Mrs. Woods was a native of Randolph County and a member of the Fellowship Baptist
Church, Gadsden, Alabama.
Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Luddie Sims of Gadsden.

Irene B. Hunt
(ROANOKE) Funeral service for Irene B. Hunt, 63, of Roanoke were Friday, Feb. 4,
1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. E. G. Clark officiating.
Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Hunt died Wednesday, Feb. 2, at her daughter's residence in Tallapoosa, Ga.
A native and lifelong resident of Roanoke, Mrs. Hunt was born Oct 21, 1930, daughter
of Monroe and Theodore Roosevelt Smith Burke. She worked in the textile industry until
1976 and became the manager of the Family Dollar Store and worked there until 1991.
She was a member of the Moose Club and the Nazarene Church of Roanoke. Her
husband, Joe Bob Hunt, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Dianne W. McGill, and son-in-law, Max McGill, of
Tallapoosa, Ga.; son Larry P. Whaley of Roanoke; son Danny Whaley and daughter-in-
law Libby Whaley of Carrollton, Ga.; her mother, Teddy S. Burke; two sisters, Mrs.
Runette B. Hodges of Columbus, Ga., and Mrs. Betty Haynes of College Park, Ga.;
eight grandchildren, Candida McGill of Roanoke, Corinna McGill and Lyndon McGill of
Tallapoosa, Robbie Whaley of Colorado, Chastity Whaley and Joey Whaley of Roanoke,
Justin Whaley of Woodland and Jamey Rampy of Washington; three nieces and five
nephews.
Pallbearers were Jerrell Hodges, Richard Laird, Jimmy Nolen, Bob Wylie, Jerrell
Robinson and Stanley Daniel.

(WOODLAND) Emma Spratlin, 89, of Rt. 1, Woodland, died Tuesday Feb. 1, 1994,
at Wedowee Hospital after a short illness.

Revs. Tony Morris, Styles Akins and Ridley Parmer officiating. Burial was in the adjoining
cemetery.
Mrs. Spratlin is survived by one son, Earl Spratlin of Woodland; one grandson, Steve
Spratlin of Roanoke; one granddaughter, Chelsea Spratlin of Roanoke; and three sisters,
Mrs. Marie Medlock of Conyers, Ga., Mrs. Estelle Curry of Fairburn, Ga., and Mrs.
Gertrude Keefer of Yuma, Arizona.
Pallbearers John Traylor, Charlie Brown, Frank Campbell, Chad Whitmore, Steve
Cantrell and John Yates. Honorary pallbearers were nephews.
Mrs. Spratlin was a native of New Orleans, La. She lived in Atlanta for a number of
years but lived in Randolph County for most of her adult life. She was a member of
Providence Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Houston Spratlin.

(ROANOKE) Elva Gay Carter, 77, of Roanoke died suddenly on Sunday, Feb. 6,
1994, in Randolph County Hospital.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Tuesday, February 8, 1994, at Midway United
Methodist Church, with Rev. Wayne Jetton and Rev. Junior Irvin officiating. Burial was in
the adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. Carter is survived by husband, Price C. M. Carter of Roanoke; one daughter,
Mrs. Brenda Carter Harris of Lanett; two sons, Junior Carter and Mike Carter of
Roanoke; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Thelma Mae Whaley
of Lineville; and one brother, Awbrey Craven of Wadley.
Pallbearers were Gerald Gosdin, Terrill Gosdin, Frankie Dewberry, Billy Dewberry,
Larry Gosdin, Steve Quinton, Tommy Craven and Lowell Gay Harmon.
Mrs. Carter was a native of Clay County who lived in Roanoke for the past 32 years.
She was a homemaker and a textile employee. She was a member of High Pine Baptist
Church.

Mr. Black died Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
A native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mr. Black was born July 7, 1910,
son of Nathaniel Paul and Sallie Bell Swann Black. He had worked as a heavy equipment
operator for Randolph County and was a member of Mt. Zion Christian Church. His wife,
Velma Gertrude Morris Black, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Sara Pinkard of Roanoke; two granddaughters,
Donna Pinkard of Jackson Gap and Angie Pinkard of Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. Agnes
Parrish of Alex City and Mrs. Annie Smith of Charleston, S.C.; two nephews and three
nieces.
Pallbearers were Garfield Clark, Gary Burke, Whit Bonner, Robert Boggs, Jimmy
Ramsey, and Denny Pounds. Serving as honorary pallbearers were W. B. Bennett, Junior
Windsor, Louis Harmon, June Waldrep, Fred Waldrep and Clarence Hodges.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Mt. Zion
Christian Church building fund.

(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Brewer Henderson, 63, of LaGrange died Saturday, Jan. 1, 1994.
Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 3, at 3 p.m. at Franklin Road Baptist Church in
LaGrange, with the Rev. Frank Sledge officiating. Burial was in Shadowland Cemetery.
Mr. Henderson was the son of the late Dan and Pallie Henderson of Randolph County,
Ala.
Survivors include his wife, Grace Henderson; one son, Mike Henderson of Fort
Lauderdale, Fla.; two sisters, Annie Ree Richardson of Roanoke Rt. 3 and Murscal
Johnson of Stockbridge, Ga.; one brother, Carl Henderson of Roanoke; and a host of
nieces and nephews.

Robert Sidney Green
(WEDOWEE) Robert Sidney Green, 72, of Wedowee, formerly of Pittsburgh, Pa.,
died Sunday, Feb. 6, 1994, at his residence.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church,
Wedowee, with Rev. Clarence Brown officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Green was a native Randolph Countian. He was a World War II veteran and a
member of the 3-C Camp. After leaving the service he migrated to Pittsburgh, where he
lived for approximately 40 years. There he was a member of Lily Baptist Church. He
returned to his native community four years ago. He is a member of the Pleasant Grove
Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Jerusha Green of Wedowee; two sons, Ricky Green of
Wedowee and Gregory Green of Monroeville, Penn.; one sister [sic], Mrs. Ethel Heath of
Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, James Green of Slippery Rock, Penn. and William Green
of Monroeville, Penn.; and two grandchildren, Gregory and Brittany Green of
Monroeville.
The body will be placed in the church one hour before the services on Wednesday.

Mary Etta Loveless Carpenter
(BIRMINGHAM) Mary Etta Loveless Carpenter, 96, of Birmingham, died
Wednesday, Feb. 2, 1994.
A native of Newell, she lived in Anniston and Oxford for 40 years and was a member
of Northside Baptist Church. Mrs. Carpenter attended Snead College, Albertville, and the
Birmingham Millinery Institute.
Funeral services were Friday at 11 a.m. at Gray Brown-Service Mortuary in Anniston.
Burial was at 1 p.m. at Jordan's Chapel, Dr. David Roberts presiding.
Mrs. Carpenter is survived by a sister, Myrtle Loveless Crouch of El Reno, Okla.; a
daughter, Virginia Carpenter Chilton, of Birmingham; two granddaughters, Karen Chilton
Eickhoff of Westport, Conn. and Melinda Chilton of Birmingham;
two great- granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.

(ATLANTA) Robert Lee Williams, 44, of Atlanta died Monday, Jan. 31, 1994, at
Integrated Health Systems, Atlanta, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, Bacon
Level, with Rev. Terry Magby officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Williams, a native of Roanoke, was preceded in death by his step-father, James
Williams; he was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, a graduate of Randolph County
Training School, and a veteran of the armed forces. He worked for the Dekalb County
Maintenance and Custodial Department in Atlanta.
Survivors include a son, Joshua Williams of Stone Mountain, Ga.; his mother, Mrs.
Catherine Williams of Atlanta; his father, Robert McClendon of Roanoke; three sisters,
Mrs. Janie Roper of Smyrna, Ga., and Mrs. Rosalyn Brown and Mrs. Lisa O'Neal of
Roanoke; and six brothers, Leonard Holliday and Donald Williams of Augusta, Ga., Eddie
Williams, Michael Williams, and Luther Grier of Atlanta, and Ronald Williams of

Whit Edmondson
(WEDOWEE) Whit Edmondson, 92, of Rt. 2, Wedowee, died Wednesday, Feb. 2,
1994, in Wedowee Hospital after a short illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at Midway United Methodist Church,
with Rev. Cloyse Johnson and Rev. Gary Henderson officiating. Burial was in the
Wedowee city cemetery.
Mr. Edmondson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Nell Edmondson of Wedowee; six
daughters, Jean Thomas, Marie Cline and Sarah Clemons, all of Wedowee, Joyce Ebert of
Leesburg, Fla., Elaine Blaszczynski of Danbury, Conn., and Penny Light Nichols of
Cullman; two sons, Cecil Edmondson of Orlando, Fla., and Rayford Edmondson of
Wedowee; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Felia
Davidson of Valley.
Pallbearers were Wayne Hughes, Jimmy Clemons, Mike Clemons, Greg Blaszczynski,
Richard Lovvorn and Gary Price.
Mr. Edmondson was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was a
farmer, a member of Auslin Chapel Methodist Church and a member of the senior citizens
group in Wedowee.

Lillie Mae Norton
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Lillie Mae Norton, 87, of LaGrange, Ga., died Thursday, Feb. 3,
1994, at West Georgia Medical Center.
Mrs. Norton was born April 15, 1906 in Wedowee and was the daughter of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Smith. She lived in LaGrange most of her life, was a homemaker, and
was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jeanette Smith of Roanoke; four grandchildren;
11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Norton were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at Mount Calvary
Baptist Church, with Rev. Johnnie White and Rev. Howard Norton, Jr. officiating. Burial
was at Shadowlawn Cemetery.

Charlie G. Bim' Sharpe
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Charlie G. Bim Sharpe, 80, of Route [?], Roanoke
were Saturday, Feb. 12, 1994, at 2 p.m. at Rock Mills United Methodist Church, with
Revs. David Holmes and Mike Pope officiating. Burial was at Bethel Baptist Church
cemetery.
Mr. Sharpe died Thursday, Feb. 10, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
A former resident of Five Points, Mr. Sharpe was a Chambers County native, born
Dec. 2, 1913, son of Charlie Lee and Mary Autrey Cummings Sharpe. He worked as an
equipment operator with the Chambers County Highway Department and was a member
of New Hope Baptist Church in Fredonia. Mr. Sharpe was a member of the Valley Echoes
gospel singing group.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dessie Sharpe of Roanoke; four daughters, Mrs.
Margaret Ross of LaGrange, Ga., Mrs. Gail Henderson of Lanett and Mrs. Faye
Culbertson and Mrs. Alice Brown, both of Five Points; a sister, Mrs. Nettie Jane Brown of
Roanoke; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Bim Allen, Gregg Culbertson, Todd Henderson, Kevin Bailey,
Tommy Dodgen and William Thomas. Serving as honorary pallbearers were J. C. Dodgen,

Eva M. Dunn
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Eva M. Dunn, 73, of LaGrange, Ga., died unexpectedly Monday,
Feb. 14, 1994, at her residence.
Mrs. Dunn was a native and lifelong resident of LaGrange. She was retired from
Callaway Mills Co. and Milliken & Co. after more than 25 years and was also a former
employee of The Biscuit House. She was a lifelong member of Eastside Baptist Temple,
LaGrange, and a former volunteer for the American Heart Association.
Funeral services will be at Eastside Baptist Temple on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m.
with Rev. Steve Nutt and Rev. R. C. Prescott officiating. Burial will be in Shadowlawn
Cemetery, LaGrange.
Surviving family members include two daughters, Mrs. Janice Meeks of Roanoke and
Mrs. Reba Fleming of LaGrange; four sisters, Mrs. Nellie Brown of Atlanta and Mrs.

Marguerite Bishop
(WADLEY) Marguerite Bishop, 73, of Wadley, died at Randolph County Hospital,
Roanoke, on Saturday, Feb. 12, 1994.
Mrs. Bishop was born in Chambers County on May 22, 1920. She was retired from
LaFayette High School lunchroom after 23 1/2 years of service. She was a member of
Darian Primitive Baptist Church in Chambers County.
Services were at graveside at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 14, at the Ebenezer Methodist
Church cemetery, conducted by Elder Roy Avery.
Survivors include one son, John C. Bishop of Wadley; four sisters, Bertha Lowe of
Lanett and Eunice Redmon, Katherine Sims and LeMerle Parks all of Wadley; and
one brother, Carl Looser of LaFayette.

Funeral services for Amer Truitt Young, 78, of Rt. 2 Roanoke were Sunday, Feb. 13,

Ms. Young died Friday, Feb. 11, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
A Cleburne County native and former resident of Ranburne, Ms. Young was born
Nov. 22, 1915, daughter of John Will and Martha Inez Wiggins Truitt. She was a member
of Rock Mills Baptist Church and had worked for Wehadkee Yarn Mills.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Kelly of Riverdale, Ga., and Mrs. Addie
Lee Keish of Mobile; and a brother, Crawford Edward Truitt, also of Mobile.

(WADLEY) Funeral services for William Euzell Davis, 76, of Route 2, Wadley, were

Mr. Davis died Thursday, Feb. 10, at Bill Nichols State Veterans Home in Alexander

A native of Woodland, Mr. Davis was born Nov. 29, 1917, son of Sam and Ola Moore
Davis. He was an army veteran of World War II and a member of Wadley Baptist Church.
He had worked at Handley Mills and Russell Mills.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nena Calhoun Davis of Wadley; three sons, Cecil
Davis and Bobby Davis of Wadley and Larry Davis of Hanford, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs.

Parker Jack Barfield
(ST. HELENA, Calif.) Parker Jack Barfield, 73, of St. Helena, Calif., died Saturday,
Feb. 12, 1994, in Napa, Calif.
A native of Wedowee, Mr. Barfield was reared and educated in Randolph County.
A veteran of WWII, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War, he served 31 years in the
U.S. Navy. Following his retirement from the Navy in 1972, he was self-employed as a
handyman in St. Helena. Mr. Barfield enjoyed gardening and reading. He was a member of
the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch No. 8 in Vallejo and American Legion Post 199 of
St. Helena.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine Barfield of St. Helena; two children, Julia Rowe
and James Barfield of St. Helena; one sister, Eva J. Barfield of Roanoke, Ala.; and
four granddaughters.
At the request of Mr. Barfield, no funeral services were held. Arrangements were
under the direction of Richard Pierce Funeral Service, Napa.

Tammy Gunn Hallmark
(CLANTON) Tammy Gunn Hallmark, 33, of Clanton died Monday, Feb. 7, 1994.
Among her relatives are some from Randolph County.
The funeral service was at Mulberry Baptist Church, Maplesville, at 2 p.m. Wednesday,
Feb. 9, with Rev. David R. Bishop officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Hallmark is survived by her husband, Royce E. Hallmark, and three children,
Heather, Megan and Travis Hallmark, all of Clanton; her parents Tom Gunn and Mrs.
Ruby J. Gunn of Birmingham; a sister, Mrs. Teresa Gunn Bishop of Pascagoula, Miss.;
and a brother, Kenneth Gunn of Birmingham.

Annie Wright Ussery
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Annie Wright Ussery, 90, of Roanoke were Friday,
Feb. 18, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Roanoke First Baptist Church, with Dr. Douglas Turner,
pastor, and Rev. Larry Armstrong, Rev. William Dean and Rev. Don Paulson, former
pastors, officiating. Burial was at Cedarwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Ussery died Wednesday, Feb. 16, at her residence.
A native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mrs. Ussery was the daughter of
James Carter and Alma Worrill Wright. She was a member and faithful worker for the
First Baptist Church, having taught Sunday School classes there for many years. She had
retired from teaching with the Roanoke City School system and was a member of Delta
Kappa Gamma.
Mrs. Ussery, or Granny Annie as she called herself in later years, was a person of
diverse talents and interests. She had the mind of a historian, which she put to work
researching and writing a scholarly history of her church. Her dramatic sense showed itself
in her directing and often writing plays and skits for programs at school and church. She
filled her mind with good literature and the teachings of the Bible. Many friends remember
her for letters of praise and encouragement they received from her on special occasions.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Suzanne Schuessler of Roanoke; a son, Dr. Gordon
C. Ussery Jr. of Roanoke; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Virginia Amelia McCosh Jacobs
(COLUMBUS, Ga.) Virginia Amelia McCosh Jacobs of Columbus, Ga., died Tuesday,
Feb. 15, 1994, at her home.
Funeral services were Friday, Feb. 18, at Macon Road Chapel of Striffler-Hamby
Mortuary, Columbus, with burial in Parkhill Cemetery.
Mrs. Jacobs was born in Standing Rock, daughter of the late Stella Dix and Samuel
Abdiel McCosh. She lived in Columbus since 1931 and was the retired co-owner of Jacobs
Pharmacy. She was a member of Columbus First Baptist Church, Amona Sunday School
Class and the Women's Missionary Union. She was the widow of Carl E. Jacobs, and was
a former member of the Mr. and Mrs. Club and a member of the Executive Club.
Survivors include one brother, Samuel A. McCosh of Forsyth, Ga.; two sisters, Ruth
McCosh Laney of Albany, Ga., and Nep McCosh Miller of Lenoir City, Tenn.; and several
nieces and nephews.

Mary Will Bennett
(LANETT) Mary Will Bennett, 76, of Lanett died Monday, Feb. 21, 1994, at Lanett
Geriatric Center.
Mrs. Bennett was born Aug. 12, 1917, in Chambers County. She was a homemaker
and had been very active in her church, Fairview Baptist. She had lived in the Valley area
most of her life.
Survivors include her husband, George Thomas Bennett; one son, William Michael
Bennett of Lanett; and two sisters, Vera Mae Patton of Fairfax and Susie Pearl Earl of
Roanoke.
Funeral services will be at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at
2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, with Rev. Bobby Crawford and Rev. J. H. King officiating.
Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery in Lanett.

Mrs. Copeland died Tuesday, Feb. 15, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
A former resident of Douglas, Wyo., Mrs. Copeland was born Nov. 13, 1911, in
Columbus, Ohio, daughter of Wynn and Margaret Conrad Neimeister. She was a member
of Big Springs Baptist Church and had worked with the U.S. Forestry Service.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Wynne Scott of Roanoke and Mrs.
Juanita Cook of Circleville, Ohio; son-in-law, C. L. (Charlie) Scott; four grandchildren,

Bertie S. Irwin
(JACKSONVILLE) Services for Bertie S. Irwin, 94, of Jacksonville, Ala., were at
11 a.m. Friday, Feb 18, 1994, at Jacksonville Church of Christ, with Phillip Black as the
officiating minister. Interment was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Irwin died Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Wessex House. A native of Randolph County
and a resident of Jacksonville for 51 years, she was the oldest living member of
Jacksonville Church of Christ.
Survivors include one daughter, Jeanette Gallahar of Jacksonville; four sons, Thomas
L. and Dausey R. Irwin of Huntsville, L. Rudolph Irwin of Anniston and Roy M. Irwin of
Alexandria; and 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Brown died Tuesday, Feb. 15, at her daughter's residence in Columbus.
A Randolph County native, Mrs. Brown was born May 6, 1908, daughter of William
David and Nancy Prescott Smith. She worked as a spinner with Handley Mills and was a
member of North Main Congregational Christian Church in Roanoke. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Willie L. Brown and a son, Kenneth S. Brown.
Survivors include a daughter, Sue Jette Jones, and son-in-law, Remmel Jones of
Columbus; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ellen Mitchell of Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. Etta Knight

(AUBURN) Ellen V. Green, 92, of Wesley Terrace, Auburn, died Saturday, Feb. 19,

Mrs. Green was a native of Chambers County, born Oct. 24, 1901. She was a retired
school teacher from the Lanett School System, a 50-year member of the Homemakers
Club and an avid needle crafter. She was a member of New Hope Christian Church.

Julius R. Gresham
(TUSKEGEE) Julius R. Gresham, 72, of Tuskegee, formerly of Roanoke, died
Monday, Feb. 14, 1994, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. at Bowen United Methodist
Church, Tuskegee, with Rev. Frederick Outlaw officiating.
Mr. Gresham was a native Randolph Countian who retired from a long and distinctive
teaching career in the public schools of Tuskegee.
Survivors include Mr. Gresham's daughter, Ms. Judith Carol Gresham of Tuskegee;
and one sister, Mrs. Carrie G. Winston of Roanoke.
The family requests no flowers, but instead asks that donations be made to the
Tuskegee Y.M.C.A.

Annie Pearl Boyd
(LANETT) Annie Pearl Boyd, 64, of Lanett died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 1994, at her
residence in Lanett.
Funeral services were at Sweet Home Baptist Church, Fredonia, on Thursday, Feb. 17,
at 2 p.m., with Rev. Jerome Spence and Rev. L. B. Houston officiating. Interment was in
New Hope Church cemetery.
Survivors include three sons, Eddie Huguley of Opelika, Berlin Huguley of West Point,
Ga., and Willie Huguley of Lanett; one brother, Joe Billings; two aunts, Mildred Anderson
and Fannie Posey of West Point; and seven grandchildren.
Mrs. Boyd was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church, Five Points. She was born
in Chambers County on July 21, 1929.

Dorothy Jean Heath Smith
(UNION CITY, Ga.) Dorothy Jean Heath Smith, 45, of Union City, Ga., died
Tuesday, Feb. 15, 1994, at her residence in Union City.
Funeral services were at Rock Mills Baptist Church, Rock Mills, Ala., Saturday, Feb.
19, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Quentin Tibbs officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Nathan Smith Sr. of Union City; two sons, Nathan
Smith Jr. of Palmetto, Ga., and Christopher Lamar Smith of Union City; and three
grandchildren.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the True Light Baptist Church in Atlanta and was an R.N.
at Grady Hospital, Atlanta. She was born in Randolph County, Ala., March 15, 1948.
