OBITUARIES:
Suzanne Ussery Schuessler
(ROANOKE) Services for Suzanne Ussery Schuessler, 73, of Roanoke will be
Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, at 11 a.m. at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 809 Rock
Mills Rd., Roanoke with the Rev. Al Perkins III officiating. Mrs. Schuessler
will lie in state one hour before the service at the church. Burial will follow
at Cedarwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Schuessler died Sunday, Dec. 4, at West Georgia Medical Center,
LaGrange.
Survivors include her husband, John Major Schuessler of Roanoke; one son,
Wesley Schuessler II of LaGrange; two daughters, Dr. Suzanne Schuessler Hayes of
LaGrange and Lila Murfee Schuessler of Birmingham; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Durham, Roger White, Oliver Kitchens, Spec Bonner,
Mark Awbrey, Pat Awbrey, Jim Dunn and Bill Ragle.
Mrs. Schuessler was born Jan. 15, 1932, daughter of Dr. Gordon Clopton Ussery
and Annie Wright Ussery. She was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, the
Dames of Magna Charta, numerous bridge clubs, Roanoke Garden Club, Roanoke
Literary Club, Roanoke Silhouette Club, and was a Randolph County Hospital Pink
Lady. Mrs. Schuessler graduated from Mercer University with a masters degree.
Mrs. Schuessler was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Alma Ussery
Croft; and one brother, Dr. Gordon Clopton Ussery Jr.

Norman Lee McClendon
(ROANOKE) Norman Lee McClendon, 72, died Tuesday, Nov 29, 2005, at Carraway
Hospital in Birmingham.
Services were Saturday, Dec. 3, at Frederick's Funeral Home in Opelika, with
the Rev. Tim Whaley officiating. Burial followed in the Veteran's Section of
Randolph Memory Gardens, Roanoke.
He was born Jan. 12, 1933, in Fort Worth, Texas. He served in the National
Guard during the Korean War. He was a truck driver and a cattle farmer by trade.
Surviving are three daughters, Denise McClendon of Carnesville, Ga., Patrice
Melton of Wadley and Jolece McClendon of Gainesville, Ga.; and two
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Richard and
Velma McClendon, and one brother, Robert McClendon.
Donations in his memory can be made to the American Diabetes Association or
the American Kidney Association.

Eddie Mae Houston
(ROANOKE) Eddie Mae Houston, 97, of 244 Field Street, Apt. 22, Roanoke, died
Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
Services will be Thursday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Riley
St., Roanoke, with the Revs. Gilbert E. Staples, Terry L. Magby, Willie C.
Houston and Jeffery Rosser and Minister Delvan Houston officiating. Burial will
be in East Roanoke Cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Ruby Trammell of Roanoke; two sisters, Mary
Ruth Magby of Valley and Lillian Watson of Roanoke; a brother-in-law, Emory
Magby of Valley; five grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 33 great-great-
grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews
and other relatives and friends.
Public viewing will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service from 10 a.m. until 6
p.m. on Wednesday. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the
services.

Joe Lon 'Sonny' Goss
(ROANOKE) Services for Joe Lon "Sonny" Goss, 72, of Roanoke were Saturday,
Dec. 3, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Wehadkee Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev.
Elijah Jackson and the Rev. L.B. Houston officiating. Burial followed at the
church cemetery.
Mr. Goss died Monday, November 28, at Randolph Medical Center.
He is survived by two daughters, Lisa Henderson of LaGrange, Ga., and Debra
Goss of Welch; three sisters, Annie Will Clark of Louisville, Ky., Naomi
Henderson of Roanoke and Emma Jean Reed of Los Angeles, Calif.; five
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Goss was a member of Wehadkee Missionary Baptist Church, He retired from
the United States Army where he served honorably for 20 years.

Rufus Terry Hill
(ROANOKE) Services for Rufus Terry Hill, 53, of Roanoke were held Friday,
Dec. 2, 2005, at 1 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Roger
Woodard and the Rev. Wayne Hester officiating. Burial followed at Randolph
Memory Gardens.
Mr. Hill died Wednesday, Nov. 30, in Roanoke.
Survivors include two sisters, Brenda Hill Ballard and Malia Hill both of
Roanoke.
Pallbearers were Joe Weathers, Steve Pike, Jim Jackson, George McCarley, Olen
Armitage and Rick Seymour.
Mr. Hill was born July 29, 1952, son of Rufus Elvrett and Betty Jean
Richardson Hill. He was Baptist by faith and attended Springfield Baptist Church
and was retired from Terry Hill Trucking.

William Jimmy Cofield
(WEDOWEE) Services for William Jimmy Cofield, 58, of Wedowee were held
Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Midway United Methodist Church with the
Rev. Roger Hammett and the Rev. Jr. Benefield officiating. Burial followed in
the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Cofield died Tuesday, Nov 29, at his home.
Mr. Cofield is survived by his wife, Gail Gilliland Cofield of Wedowee; two
sons, Chip Cofield of Wedowee and David Cofield of Roanoke; and four
grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Keith Langley, Roger Hester, Steve Calhoun, Lamar Turner,
Rayford Edmondson and Vernon Lipham. Honorary pallbearers were Ron Waters, Wyatt
Wright III, Charles Fincher, Tommy Lipham and DeWayne Satterwhite.
Mr. Cofield was born December 14, 1946, the son of Albert David and Sara
Melton Cofield. He was a member of Midway United Methodist Church, a member of
the church Men's Club, a carpenter and welder, employed by Amoco Fabrics of
Roanoke, and an avid coon hunter. Mr. Cofield was preceded in death by his
parents.

Loyd Huddleston
(MONTGOMERY) Graveside services for Loyd Huddleston, 87, of Montgomery,
formerly of Roanoke, were Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at 1 p.m. at Shadowlawn Cemetery
in LaGrange, Ga., with the Rev. Fred Walker, officiating.
Mr. Huddleston died Tuesday, Nov. 29, at the V.A. Hospital in Montgomery.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were John Wilson, Ralph Richardson, Carlos Ackers, Olin Ferrell,
Alears Hale and Gene Brand.
Mr. Huddleston was born May 18, 1918, son of Joe S. and Ela Wilson
Huddleston. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and had worked for the State
of Alabama Supply Office. Mr. Huddleston was preceded in death by his wife,
Betty Copper Huddleston.

Jo Anne Rampy Wiggins
(BOWDON, Ga.) Jo Anne Rampy Wiggins, 69, of 358 Reavesville Road, Bowdon,
Ga., died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005 in Wedowee Hospital.
Mrs. Wiggins was born in Carroll County, Ga., Jan. 7, 1936, daughter of the
late Robert Lee and Dorothy Smith Rampy. She was a member of Pleasant Grove
Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Bleyle Co., Newnan, Ga.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jim H.
Wiggins; a son, Sammy Kim Wiggins; and a granddaughter, Jessica Jordan.
Survivors include a son, Terry Lynn Wiggins of Bowdon; a daughter, Regina
Wiggins of Bowdon; two grandsons; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Gilbert
Rampy of Bowdon; and two sisters, Susan R. Hyde of Wedowee and Gloria Gregg of
Woodland.
Services were Monday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church,
with the Revs. Roy Wysner and Ridley Herren officiating. Internment was in the
church cemetery, with the Rev. Danny Puckett officiating at graveside.

Celeste Alford Holland
(CARROLLTON, Ga.) Celeste Alford Holland, 88, of Carrollton, Ga., died
Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, at Tanner Medical Center, Carrollton.
She was born in Carroll County, Ga., Jan. 25, 1917. She was a member of
Bowdon Baptist Church and was a cosmetologist.
Survivors include a son, Barry Payne of Wedowee; two stepsons, Kenneth
Holland of Carrollton and Robert Holland of Calhoun, Ga.; and one stepdaughter,
Elizabeth Holbrook of Douglasville, Ga. In addition to her parents, she was
preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Holland.
Services were Sunday, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Rainwater Funeral
Home. Music was furnished by Jennie Prater. Interment followed in the Tyus
Baptist Church Cemetery.

Leon Lashley Sr.
(LAFAYETTE) Leon Lashley Sr., 66, of LaFayette died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at
Bethany House Hospice.
Services were Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, with the
Revs. Ken Tankersley and Tim Fowler officiating. Interment was in the church
cemetery.
Mr. Lashley was a native of Coosa County, born Jan. 24, 1939. He was retired
from the Golden Flake Company after 25 years. He then owned and operated Lashley
Hardware in LaFayette. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Madeline Poe Lashley; a daughter, Lea Ann Hurd of
Newnan, Ga.; a son, Robert L. (Chip) Lashley Jr.; his mother, Laura Lashley of
LaFayette; a sister, Gaynell West of Woodland; a brother, Johnny Lashley of
LaFayette; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Lee, Mike Benton, Charlie Christian, Joe Belser,
Donald Sanders and Lewis Lowe. Honorary pallbearers were Franklin Blackmon and
Franklin Howard.

Rev. Cal Ledbetter
(NEWELL) Rev. Cal Ledbetter, 82, of Newell died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, in
Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center Anniston.
Rev. Ledbetter was born in Shelby County, Sept. 27, 1923, the son of the late
A.B. and Georgia Daugherty Ledbetter. He was a retired minister and a Navy
veteran of World War II. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife Alverlene McCord Haynes Ledbetter; a son, Paul
James Ledbetter of Ranburne; four daughters, Geraldine Walker and Wanda Maxwell
of Carrollton, Ga., Kathleen Walker of Douglasville, Ga., and Irine Noles of
Graham; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pauline
Edwards of Heflin. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his
first wife Gladys Ledbetter; five brothers, Guy, Jesse Lee, Cecil, Dal and
Carlos Ledbetter; three sisters, Ethel Wilson, Clara Gore and Mamie Ledbetter.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. (Georgia time) at
Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Stewart and the Rev. Julian Murphy
officiating. Eulogy was given by Teresa Greene. Music was furnished by Corinth
Baptist Church Choir and Petie Stewart Pallbearers were Jason Walker, Mike
Greene, John Ledbetter, Myles Maxwell, Aaron Walker and Steve Noles. Interment

Era Ayers Lee Greene
(ANNISTON) Services for Era Ayers Greene, 90, of Anniston, formerly of
Randolph County, were Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, at 7 p.m. at Benefield Funeral
Chapel, with the Rev. Ralph Barrows and the Rev. Bill Luke officiating. Burial
was in Corinth Cemetery.
Mrs. Greene died Nov 14, at Autumn Cove Assisted Living.
Mrs. Greene is survived by three daughters, Peggy Luke of Oxford, Hughey
Clark of Panama City, Fla., and Pat Moore of Humble, Texas; one sister, Louise
Daniel of Newell; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by two husbands, Cecil Lee and Clarence Greene; one daughter,
Mary Nell Kulig; one grandson, Mark Kulig; five brothers; and three sisters.
Honorary pallbearers were Kevin Clark, Tom Powell, Gordon Kulig, Brent Kulig,
Brendan Moore and Jason Leigh.
Mrs. Greene was born June 29, 1915, daughter of Wilburn Patrick and Millie
White Ayres. She was a member of Corinth United Methodist Church, teacher of
elementary special education in the Anniston City School System, retired from
the Teachers Association, graduated from Jacksonville State University, and was
a member of the Alabama Democratic Party.

Murry Shirah
(CLIO) Murry Shirah, 82, of Clio died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005, in a Dothan
nursing facility. Mr. Shirah was a retired traffic engineer for the state of
Alabama of 34 years.
Services were Saturday, Dec. 3, at Clio Baptist Church Dr. Tharel Shirah
officiated. Special music was performed by Dr. Stroud Jackson. Interment
followed in the Pea River Presbyterian Cemetery.
The family requests the remembrances be made to the Alzheimer's Resource
Center, 1314 Westgate Parkway, Dothan, AL 36303, in lieu of flowers.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Shirah of Dothan; sons, Dr. Tharel Shirah

W. Millard Stevens
(BURLINGTON, N.C.) The Rev. Dr. W. Millard Stevens, pastor emeritus of the
First Christian United Church of Christ, died at the age of 94.
Dr. Stevens was a native of Randolph County and a graduate of Handley High
School. He was the son of the late W.H. Stevens and the late Nora Payne Stevens.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Aida June Jones Stevens; and infant
son, Thomas Wyatt Stevens. He was also preceded in death by his three brothers,
Kenice Stevens, Curtis Stevens and Joe Tom Stevens; and one sister, Annie Rae
Stevens.
Dr. Stevens is survived by his wife, Kathleen Miles Stevens; and several
nieces and nephews.
Dr. Stevens graduated from Elon College and Yale University Divinity School.
He was given an honorary doctor of divinity degree by Elon College in 1952. He
was ordained as a Christian Minister in the Congregational Christian Church,
later the United Church of Christ. He served as a pastor in Alabama, North
Carolina, Virginia, Connecticut and Tennessee.
Dr. Stevens served two terms as president of the Southern Conference of the
United Church of Christ, formerly the Southern Convention of the Congregational
Christian Churches, from 1950-1954. He was a member of the board of trustees of
Elon College for 41 years. He was also a member of the board of trustees of
Bradley Memorial Hospital while a pastor in Southington, Conn. At the time of
his death, he was pastor emeritus of the First Christian United Church of Christ
and trustee emeritus of Elon College.
Services will be Thursday, Dec. 8, at 1 p.m. at the First Christian United
Church of Christ. Officiating will be the Rev. Mark Nanny and Dr. Earl Danielle.
Burial will follow in the Union Ridge United Church of Christ Cemetery.

Mrs. Knotts was born May 21, 1914, daughter of' Grove and Pansy Wamsley Miller.

(WADLEY) Services for James Edward Allen, 88, of Wadley will be Thursday Dec.
8, 2005, at, 10 a.m. at Wadley First United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Abi
Wilkie, Jack Womack and Zenus Windsor officiating. Mr. Allen will lie in state
at the church one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Wadley City
Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m.
on Wednesday.
Mr. Allen died Tuesday, Dec. 6, at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Edna Earl Mitchum Allen of Wadley; one daughter,
Lynn Newsome of Wadley; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one
brother, Milford "Bill" Allen of Hidelberg, Miss.
Mr. Allen was born Jan. 16, 1917, son of R. Grady and Vicie Gay Allen. He
was a member of Wadley First United Methodist Church, served in the U.S. Army
during World War II, and was owner and operator of Allen General Mercantile of
Wadley for many years. Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents; one son,
Jim Allen; one brother, Ralph Allen; and his step-mother, Beatrice Allen.

First Methodist.

Ottis Hester
(ROANOKE) Services for former county commissioner Ottis Hester of Roanoke,
84, of Roanoke were Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Big Springs Baptist
Church, with the Rev. Scott Hannah and the Rev. Steve Dempsey officiating.
Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Hester died Thursday, Dec. 8, at Roanoke Healthcare Center.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Chase Hester of Roanoke; three daughters,
Jennifer Vinson of Birmingham, Phyllis Rushton of Roanoke and Rosemary Morman of
Roanoke; two sons, Ricky Hester and Don Hester of Roanoke; 21 grandchildren and
seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were George Bruster, Dan Driskell, Ralph Davis, Robbie Harper,
Don Arrington and Ted Arrington. Honorary pallbearers will be the Big Springs
Baptist Men's Sunday School Class, Randolph County commissioners and employees,
and Clifford Lawson.
Mr. Hester was born Dec. 5, 1921, son of Millard and Mary Arrington Hester.
He was a member of Big Springs Baptist Church and had been a county commissioner
and heavy equipment operator. He was an avid domino player.

Mr. Hamner was born Sept. 22, 1960, son of Lewis H. and Marion P. Hamner. He

Bar, and was a practicing attorney in Roanoke.

Charles O. Stephens
(VALLEY) Charles O. Stephens, 73, of Valley died Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at
Care Center of Opelika.
Mr. Stephens was born March 12, 1932, in Roanoke. He was retired from the
U.S. Air Force and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Roanoke and the
Retired Sergeant's Association. He enjoyed writing short stories and jokes, many
of which were published, and he was an avid "Roll Tide" fan.
Surviving are a son, Arthur Garrett Stephens of Spokane, Wash.; three
brothers, Ted Stephens of Columbus, Ga., Mike Stephens of Montgomery and Randy
Stephens of McKinley, Texas; three sisters, Dawn Barrington of Valley, Anne
Thomas of Woodstock, Ga., and Gale Holliday of Forest Park, Ga.; and two
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Frankie Maudine Stephens;
and his parents, Frances Maude Brown Stephens and Hubert Franklin Stephens.
Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 2:30
p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, with burial in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke. The Rev. Ed

(ROANOKE) Services for Iver Jene Smith, 83, of Roanoke were Monday, Dec. 12,

Miss Smith died Sunday, Dec. 11, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
Survivors include two sisters, Tina Mae Smith of Roanoke and Vernice Hammond
of Roanoke; and one brother, Earl Smith of Roanoke.
Miss Smith was born June 18, 1922, daughter of James Monroe and Emma Whitley
Smith. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Roanoke and had been a
seamstress for the Palm Beach Company. Miss Smith was preceded in death by her
parents; three sisters, Nora Bell Smith, Carolyn Wilkinson and Louise Smith; and
two brother[s], Clarence Smith and Morris Smith. In lieu of flowers donations

Mr. Lane died Wednesday, Dec. 7, at the Care Center of Opelika.
Survivors include his wife, Katherine Sims Lane of Roanoke; three daughters,
Eileen Watts of Roanoke, Mary Ann Melton of LaGrange, Ga., and Bobbie Brown of
Opelika; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-
grandchildren.

Mr. Lane was born July 28, 1914, son of Willie Dudley and Lula Jones Lane. He
was a member of Lanes Chapel Methodist Church and was retired from Handley
Mills. Mr. Lane was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, J.L. Lane;

(ALEXANDER CITY) Willene Green, 78, of Alexander City died Friday, Dec. 9,
2005, at Adams Nursing Home, Alexander City.

Mrs. Green was born Nov. 16, 1927, in Isabella, Ala. She finished high school
at Chambers County High School at Milltown and received B.A. and M.S. degrees
from Auburn University. She was highly regarded and respected for her
professional commitment and service to public schools for more than 37 years.
Survivors include her husband, Richard E. Green of Alexander City; four
children, Deborah Knight of Opelika, Earl Green of Auburn, Jim Green of
Montgomery and Charon Green of Milltown; one sister, Reita Payne of Albany, Ga.;

Freddie L. Phillips
(DELTA) Services for Freddie L. Phillips, 85, of Delta were Saturday, Dec.
17, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Center West Baptist Church, with the Revs. Mark Williams,

Mr. Phillips died Friday, Dec. 16, at Clay County Nursing Home. He was a
native and lifelong resident of Randolph County and was a cattle farmer and
poultry producer. Mr. Phillips was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during World
War II on several ships. He was one of the few survivors of the sinking of the
SS Warrior. He has been a member of Center West Baptist Church for over 73
years.
He is survived by his wife, Ima Lou Phillips of Delta; two sons, Donald
Phillips and Doyle Phillips of Delta; six grandchildren; and nine great-
grandchildren.
Pallbearers were James Swann, Ronnie Key, Jim Young, Mike Jarrell, Obie

(CRAGFORD) Wayne Hornsby, 60, of Cragford died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at
his residence.

Mr. Hornsby was born Feb. 17, 1945 in Troup County, Ga. He was a U.S. Army
veteran of Vietnam and was retired from General Motors in Atlanta after 35 years
of service.
Survivors include his mother, Ethel Hodnett of Cragford; four children, Donna
Porter, Debby Mitcham and Gabriel Wayne Hornsby of LaFayette and Diana Welch of
Dadeville; two sisters, Robbie Radcliff of Jackson Gap and Joy Hulsey of Smith

grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in

(WEDOWEE) Services for the Rev. Maley "Gold" Cofield, 89, of Wedowee were

Mr. Cofield died Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Wedowee Hospital.
Mr. Cofield is survived by two sons, Sam Cofield of Cadiz, Ky., and Bill
Cofield of Oneonta; one sister, Kathleen Gray of Valley; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Grady Cofield, Graham Cofield, Joseph Cofield, Pat Whaley,
Mitchell Cooper and Mark Rasbury. Wedowee Masonic Lodge #93 F & AM served as
honorary pall-bearers.
Mr. Cofield was born Oct. 3, 1916, son of William Marshal and Cherry Bama
Rice Cofield. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, a former superintendent
for Randolph County Board of Education, had taught history, ag, and economics
for 10th through 12th grades, was a member of the Wedowee Kiwanis Club, and had
been a member for 50 years of the Wedowee Masonic Lodge. He served in the U.S.
Army during World War II. Mr. Cofield had served as pastor at a number of
churches in the area. Mr. Cofield is preceded in death by his wife, Rossie
Cofield; and several brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Craft died Tuesday, Dec. 13, at NHC Health Care in Anniston. She was a
native of Clay County but had lived most of her life in Randolph County. She was
a homemaker and a member of Folsom Home Demonstration Club and Union Hill
Congregational Methodist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Louise Craft Ogle of Anniston and Linda
Craft Howard of Wedowee; one son, Lloyd Craft of Wedowee; four sisters, Marie
Humphrey and Naomi Hill of Wedowee and Ethel Bean and Betty Hendrix of
Huntsville; two brothers, Harold Key and the Rev. Basil Key of Wedowee; seven
grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Craft.

Kermit William Harrison
(DOTHAN) Kermit William Harrison, 92, a resident of Harrison Road in Dothan,
died early Thursday morning, Dec. 15, 2005, in Westside Terrace.
Services were Saturday, Dec. 17, at Beulah Baptist Church, Dothan, with the
Revs. Otis Derrah and Chris Gulledge officiating. Burial was in the church
cemetery.

Mr. Harrison was a native of Henry County, son of the late Calvin Wes
Harrison and Mattie Lee Hayes Harrison. He was a graduate of Headland High
School. Mr. Harrison lived in Wedowee for 32 years before moving to Dothan in
1975. He was retired as a director with the Agricultural Stabilization
Conservation Service in Randolph County and also from the Alabama Department of
Industrial Relations as an unemployment insurance field deputy. Mr. Harrison was
a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired with the rank of major from the
U.S. Army Reserve. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, the Golden K.
Kiwanis Club and Sawyer Masonic Lodge, Wedowee.
Mr. Harrison was preceded in death by his wife, Cloyce McClenny Harrison; a
grandson, Mack C. Harrison Jr., a granddaughter, Alanna Winn; and three
brothers, Herman Harrison, Howard Harrison and John Ellis Harrison.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Sheila Kidd of Hueytown and Neena
Winn of Ashburn, Va.; two sons, Mack Harrison of Opelika and Joe Friley Harrison
of Mobile; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

(ZEBULON, Ga.) Walter J. Fisher, 68, of Zebulon, Ga., died Saturday, Dec. 17,
2005, at his residence.
Mr. Fisher was born in Roanoke to the late William H. Fisher and Velma
Wilkerson Fisher on Jan 13, 1937. He was a commercial truck driver for over 20
years. He enjoyed fishing and restoring old cars.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jewel Fisher; three children, Randy
Fisher and Walter J. Fisher Jr. of Zebulon and Kristi Legnetto of Syracuse,
N.Y.; two grandchildren; one brother, Curtis Fisher of Roanoke; one sister, Sue
Bradley of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Almon was born March 5, 1922, daughter of James Dallas and Sarah Lee

Sunday school class, and through the years had served as Sunday school teacher,
leader of Girls Auxiliary, and an active member of the hospitality and care
committees. She graduated from Handley High School in 1940 and had been a
seamstress for the Palm Beach Company until her retirement in 1982. She also was
a Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader for many years.
Mrs. Almon was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Almon; and one sister,
Leah George.

Donnie Benefield
(ELLENWOOD, Ga.) Donnie Benefield of Ellenwood, Ga., formerly of Tiger, Ga.,
died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2005.
Mr. Benefield was an ordained evangelist and attended River of Life Church in
Stockbridge, Ga., as an affiliate. He was involved in Bill Glass Prison
Ministries and was an active member of CMA and ABATE.
He is survived by his wife, Earline Benefield of Tiger, Ga.; daughter, Robbie
Johnson of Tiger; two sisters, Renae Hewett of McDonough, Ga., and Yvonne Nix of
LaGrange, Ga.; six granddaughters; nine sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and
several aunts, uncles, cousins and nephews. He was preceded in death by his
parents, Donald and Juliabell Benefield.
Services will be Saturday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. at Ward's Parkway Chapel, with
the Rev. James Swanger officiating. Interment will follow at Rabun Memory Park

Mary Kate B. French
(WEDOWEE) Services for Mary Kate B. French, 89, of Wedowee were Friday, Dec.
23, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Ava United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gary Henderson
and the Rev. Richard Smith officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. French died Wednesday, Dec. 21, at the Lineville Nursing Home.
Survivors include two sisters, Nadine Kirby of Birmingham and Sarah B.
Benefield of Wedowee; and a special niece, Delores Harmon.
Pallbearers were Barry Kirby, Mac McRae, Steve Burdette, Daniel McRae, Merlyn
Brown, Anthony Brown and Sam Brown. Honorary pallbearers were her nephews.
Mrs. French was born Dec. 11, 1916, daughter of Robert Eugene and Callie
Ophelia Weathers Burdette. She was a member of Ava United Methodist Church and
had been a seamstress for the Palm Beach Company. Mrs. French was preceded
in death by her husband, Doug French. Flowers will be accepted or donations may
be made to either the Ava United Methodist Building Fund, Wedowee or the First
United Methodist Building Fund, Wedowee.

Thelma Gay Kitchens
(NEWELL) Services for Mr. Thelma Gay Kitchens, 90, of Newell were Friday,
Dec. 23, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Iduma Congregational Methodist Church, with the Rev.
Leron Murphy officiating. Entombment was in the New Home United Methodist
Cemetery.
Mr. Kitchens died Wednesday, Dec. 21, at NHC Healthcare of Anniston.
Mr. Kitchens is survived by two daughters, Vasser Sheppard of Salem and Hazel
Piermatteo of Ponta Vedra Beach, Fla.; two sons, Marlys Kitchens of Heflin and
Wayne Kitchens of Newell; two sisters, Mordie Landers of Peachtree City, Ga.,
and Rudy Lipham of Texas; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two
great-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Randy Sheppard, Jeffery Kitchens, Jason Kitchens, Allen
Garrett, Tim Shultz, Stanley Bean, Roy Smith and Tony Piermatteo.
Mr. Kitchens was born Nov. 23, 1915, son of William Gilbert and Martha Etta
Holloway Kitchens. He was a member of Iduma Congregational Methodist Church and
had been a poultry farmer. Mr. Kitchens was preceded in death by his wife,
Velma Kitchens; and one grandson, Jonathon Kitchens.

Rogers Rose
(RANDOLPH COUNTY) Rogers Rose Jr., 70, of Randolph County died Saturday, Dec.
24, 2005, at his home.
Mr. Rose was born Nov. 25, 1935, in Memphis, Tenn.; son of the late Rogers
Sr. and Glenice Bickers Rose.
He was a successful entrepreneur in the automotive and motor industries and
was the owner and operator of AAA Fire Works in Randolph County. He attended
Community Christian Church in Franklin, Ga.
Survivors include his wife, Linda F. Rose; daughters Janice Cunningham and
Dianne Smith; a son, Heinrich Rose; five stepchildren, Jessica Twilley,
Charlotte Twilley, Charleen Twilley, David Price and Robert Price; a sister,
Betty Owen; three brothers, Lynn R. Rose, Glenn O. Rose and Robin L. Smith; four
grandchildren, three nieces and five great-nieces and great-nephews.
Services for Mr. Rose will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hunter-Allen-Myhand
Chapel in LaGrange, Ga., with the Rev. Mike Bain officiating. The family will be
at the home of his mother-in-law, Barbara Gann, at 22 Chase Road, LaGrange, and
will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 until 11 before the service.
