OBITUARIES:
Agnes Sherrer Noles
(PHENIX CITY) Agnes Sherrer Noles, 81, of Phenix City died Sunday, July 30, 1995,
at Phenix Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Noles was born in Randolph County on Nov. 8, 1913, daughter of Roy Clemon
and Nannie Windsor Sherrer. A homemaker, she had lived in Phenix City for 20 years. She
was a member of Corinth Congregational Christian Church, Wadley. Her husband, Odell
Noles, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Anthony Sonny Odell Noles of Beulah; three daughters,
Murriel Noles Horne of Phenix City, Geneva Lauderdale of Wadley and Debbie Nunn of
Roanoke; two brothers, Clemon Sherrer of Alexander City and Denver Sherrer of
Ashland; two sisters, Arizona Prather of Alexander City and Lorene Key of Panama City,
Fla.; and 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services for Mrs. Noles were at Colonial Funeral Home in Phenix City at 9 a.m. CDT
and at Corinth Christian Church at 2 p.m. CDT. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Arrangements were by Colonial Funeral Home.

Ezra Turner Glenn
(CHICAGO, Ill.) Ezra Turner Glenn, 58, of Chicago, Ill., died Saturday, July 22, 1995,
at his residence.
Mr. Glenn's survivors include two aunts, Ms. Effie Rowland of Chicago and Mrs. Ida
Bell Baker of Atlanta, Ga., and one uncle, King David Turner of Wedowee.
Services were Friday, July 28, at 12 o'clock from Antioch Baptist Church with the
Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating. Interment was in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary of Roanoke.

Isaiah Zack' Harrison
(ROANOKE) Isaiah Zack Harrison, 81, of Roanoke died Thursday, July 27, 1995,
at Randolph County Hospital.
Mr. Harrison was a member of the Holiness Church in Graham.
Survivors include three sons, Hugh Harrison, Aden Harrison of Carrollton, Ga., and
Leon Harrison of Bremen, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Nennie Harris of Roanoke and Ms.
Jimmie D. Ellis of Bowdon, Ga.; one brother, Hubert Harrison of south Georgia;
11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews and friends.
Services for Mr. Harrison were July 31 at 3 p.m. from the Silmon Mortuary Chapel,
with the Rev. L. J. Wright officiating. Interment was in Wehadkee Baptist Church
Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary of Roanoke.

Ila Odesa Cosper
(BOWDON, Ga.) Ila Odesa Cosper, 86, of Bowdon, Ga., died suddenly on Monday,
July 31, 1995.
She was born in Carroll County, Ga., May 9, 1909, the daughter of the late Albert L.
and Lena Johnson Ward. Mrs. Cosper was a lifelong resident of this area, a member and
church chorister of Bethlehem Campground Methodist Church, and a retired employee of
Bremen-Bowdon Investment Co.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ezra Cosper, and a son, Ward
Cosper.
Survivors include four sons, Jerry Cosper and Terry Cosper of Bowdon, James Ezra
Cosper, Jr., of Jonesboro, Ga., and George Cosper of McDonough, Ga.; two daughters,
Mrs. Betty Grooms of Graham and Mrs. Jackie Rampy of Atlanta; nine grandchildren and
nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Aug. 2, at 2 p.m. (Ga. time) at Bethlehem
Campground Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tommy Willingham and the Rev. W. M.
Wiggins officiating. Music was [sic - will be] furnished by the church choir. Interment
followed [sic - follows] in the church cemetery.
Rainwater-West Funeral Home of Bowdon was [sic - is] in charge of the arrangements.

Emmitt Owen Bowen
(FAIRBURN, Ga.) Emmitt Owen Bowen, 83, of Fairburn, Ga., formerly of Randolph
County, died Wednesday, July 26, 1995, at Southland Nursing Home, Peachtree City, Ga.
Graveside services were at 11 a.m. CDT Friday, July 28, with Bro. Otis Bowen Jr.
officiating.
Mr. Bowen is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Judy C. White of Fairburn; two
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Doyle Hester, Charlie Will Hester, Dolphus Hester, Jim Tom
Willingham, Wayne Willingham and Dorsey Prince.
Mr. Bowen was born in Randolph County, Ala., on March 13, 1912, to Edward
William and Ophelia George Harris Bowen. He was retired from textile work and was a
member of West Georgia Church of Christ. He had lived in Fairburn for the past four
years.

Ralph Pete' Pate
(COVINGTON, Tex.) Funeral services for Ralph Pete Pate, 76, of Covington, Tex.,
formerly of Roanoke, Ala., will be held Wednesday Aug. 2, 1995, at 2 p.m. from
Crosier-Pearson-Mayfield Funeral Home in Cleburne, Tex., with the Revs. Mark Harrad
and James Bass officiating.
Graveside services and burial will be Saturday, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. from High Pine
Baptist Church Cemetery near Roanoke, Dr. Douglas Turner officiating.
Mr. Pate died Saturday, July 28, at Walls Regional Hospital in Texas.
A Randolph County native, he was born March 10, 1919, son of Robert Wilson and
Maude Estelle Liles Pate. [H]e was a retired pilot who had worked with American Airlines
for 34 years. While serving in the Army Air Corps he taught French and British pilots.
Mr. Pate was a charter member of Richland Hills Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Tex.,
a deacon of First Baptist Church in Blum, Tex., and a Mason, Haltom City Lodge #1331,
Haltom City, Tex.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Broom Pate of Covington; two daughters,
Charlotte Gilbert of Fort Worth, Tex., and Ginger Matson of Summerville, S.C.; one son,
Terry Pate of Odessa, Tex.; a brother, J. H. Pate of Columbus, Ga.; and four
grandchildren.

Inez Elizabeth Carter
(BOWDON, Ga.) Inez Elizabeth Carter, 44, of Bowdon, Ga., died Wednesday,
July 26, 1995, at her residence after a short illness.
Funeral services were Sunday, July 30, at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove A.M.E. Church,
Newell, with the Rev. Raymond Angel officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Andrew Carter; one son, Andrea Carter; two
daughters, April Carter and Stacy Carter; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Hudson Goodwin and
Ms. Bonnell Hudson Thurmon; and one brother, Edward Hudson. All are Bowdon
residents.
Mrs. Carter was a native of Bowdon, the daughter of Mrs. Callie Hudson and the late
Guy Hudson. She married Andrew Carter in the 1970s and resided in the Graham
community in Randolph County until a year ago. She was a former employee of Sewell
Manufacturing Company in Bowdon and a member of Pine Tucky Baptist Church,
Bowdon.
Clark Memorial Funeral Service of Roanoke was in charge of arrangements.

J. B. Bill' Owens
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for J. B. Bill Owens, 72, of Route 1, Roanoke, were
Tuesday, Aug. 1, 1995, at 10 a.m. at Rock Springs Congregational Christian Church, with
the Revs. Roger Florence and Stanley Yarbrough officiating. Burial was in the adjoining
cemetery.
Mr. Owens died Sunday, July 30, at his home.
A Randolph County native, he was born Aug. 14, 1922, son of Jack and Bernice
Brown Owens. He was a World War II Army veteran, and a member and deacon of Rock
Springs Congregational Christian Church. He had retired from West Georgia Medical
Center.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Fallin Owens of Roanoke; three daughters, Betty
Higgins and Sharon Newman of Roanoke and Susan Harris of Hamilton, Ga.; two sisters,
Gertrude Gray of Huguley and Jeanette Potts of Roanoke; a brother, Calvin Owens of
Melbourne, Fla.[;] and six grandchildren.

Amos J. Chain Horse' Burgess
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Amos Jay Chain Horse Burgess, 76, of Roanoke
were Monday, Aug. 7, 1995, at 1 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, the Rev. S. T.
Janney officiating. Burial was at Rock Springs Christian Church cemetery.
Mr. Burgess died Saturday, Aug. 5, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
A Randolph County native, he was born Sept. 2, 1919, son of J. D. and Bell Aldridge
Burgess. He had worked with the City of Roanoke. His wife, Lillie Clark Burgess,
preceded him in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Doris Staples of Roanoke and Teresa Clark of Iowa;
two sons, Larry Joe Burgess of Woodland and Johnny J. Burgess of Iowa; his mother,
Bell Watson of Greenville, Ga.; a sister, Janie Beckon of LaGrange, Ga.; two brothers,
Bobby Burgess of LaGrange and Julian Bailey of Jacksonville, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.

Bessie Ingram Dunn
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Bessie Ingram Dunn, 83, of Roanoke were Tuesday,
Aug. 3, 1995, at 2 p.m. from First Baptist Church with Dr. Douglas Turner and the Rev.
Larry Armstrong officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Dunn died Sunday, Aug. 6, at Randolph County Hospital after a short illness.
A Chambers County native, she was born April 7, 1912, daughter of William Henry
and Lola B. Stephenson Floyd. She was a former resident of Wadley and had lived in
Roanoke for the past 51 years. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist
Church. She and her husband, the late James B. Dunn Sr., founded Dunn Chevrolet.
Survivors include a daughter, Lucy Jane Dunn Daniel of Birmingham; two sons, Jimmy
Dunn of Roanoke and Johnny Dunn of Montgomery; five grandchildren, Joseph C. Daniel
Jr. of Birmingham, Melissa Daniel Patterson of Tuscaloosa, and Jim and Allison Dunn,
both of Roanoke, and John Dunn of Montgomery; two sisters, Belva Floyd Woodall and
Annie Floyd Redfearn of Atlanta.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church or to the
American Cancer Society (1599 Clifton Road, N.E., Atlanta, GA 30329).

David Adcock Weathers
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for David Adcock Weathers, 41, of Route 3, Roanoke
were Sunday, Aug. 13, 1995, at 2 p.m. from White's Chapel United Methodist Church
with the Revs. Don Quick and Harold Bonner officiating. Burial was at the adjoining
cemetery.
Mr. Weathers died Saturday, Aug. 12, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile
accident.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Sept. 3, 1953, son of Willie B.
and Flora Bell Adcock Weathers. He worked as a self-employed home builder.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn LeSueur Weathers of Roanoke; a daughter[,]
Tiffany Lynn Adcock Weathers of Roanoke; a stepson, Kevin Daniel Porter of Roanoke;
two sisters, Carolyn Napier of Roanoke and Linda Brown of Hogansville, Ga.; four
brothers, Oliver Weathers of Mableton, Ga., John D. Weathers of Hampton, Ga., J. Reese
Weathers of Forest Park, Ga., and Bonney B. Weathers of Ellenwood, Ga.

Thomas Lloyd Evans
(SMITHS) Thomas Lloyd Evans, 55, of Smiths died Sunday, Aug. 13, 1995, at West
Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
Mrs. [sic] Evans, president of Phenix Girard Bank in Phenix City, was born Aug. 15,
1940, in Randolph County, Ala., son of Dorris Leon and Eulette Fincher Evans. He was a
graduate of Huntingdon College in Montgomery, where he was a member of the Athletic
Hall of Fame, and also was a graduate of Banking School of the South. He was a member
and deacon of Lakewood Baptist Church in Phenix City and was a member of the Air
Force Reserve.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Brenda Evans of Smiths; his mother, Mrs. Eulette
Evans of Phenix City; two daughters, Tracie Evans Chancey of Phenix City and Angeline
Christine Evans of Smiths; [and] one sister, Ellen Evans Haulman of Montgomery.
Services for Mr. Evans were at 4 p.m. EDT Tuesday, Aug. 15, from Lakewood Baptist
Church, with burial in Lakewood Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations to Huntingdon College Athletic
Department, 1500 Fairview Ave., Montgomery, AL 36106.

Robert Samuel Sam' Bailey
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Funeral services for Robert Samuel Sam Bailey, 67, of
LaGrange, formerly of Rock Mills, were Tuesday, Aug. 15, 1995, at 1 p.m. at
Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Franklin Foster officiating. Burial was at
Liberty East Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Bailey died Sunday, Aug. 13, in Rock Mills after a short illness.
A Randolph County native, he was born Jan. 10, 1928, son of Walter R. and Minnie
Lee Burdett Bailey. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and had worked in the
textile industry.
Survivors include two sons, Reuben Bailey of Rock Mills and Robert Samuel Bailey,
Jr., of Roanoke; a step-son, Wayne Edmondson of Atlanta; a brother, Walter R. Bailey
of Rock Mills; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be [sic - were] Holly Howard, Bill Brown, Jerry Parmer, Keith Towler,
Lewis Moore and Jessie Caldwell.

Ethel Tucker
(ROANOKE) Mrs. Ethel Tucker, 77, of Roanoke died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 1995, at
Randolph County Hospital after an extended illness.
Services were Saturday, Aug. 12, at 2 p.m. from Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church,
Roanoke, the Rev. L. B. Houston, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the adjoining church
cemetery. Pallbearers and flower attendants were selected friends of the family.
Mrs. Tucker was born in the Roanoke area, Randolph County, March 25, 1918,
daughter of the late Hence and Carrie (Baldwin) Phillips. She spent all of her life in the
Roanoke community, where she was a loyal member of Peace and Goodwill Baptist
Church. She is the widow of the late Willie B. Tucker, who preceded her in death by
several years.
Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Minnie Tucker of Roanoke; two brothers, Willie
D. Phillips and Lin Phillips of Anniston; two step-sisters, Ms. Ethel Boatwright and Ms.
Julia Brooks of Youngstown, Ohio; two step-brothers, Jessie Brooks of Knoxville, Tenn.,
and John Eddie Brooks of Tampa, Fla.; and eight nieces and one nephew.
Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Ruby Victoria Kitchens
(WEDOWEE) Ruby Victoria Kitchens, 81, of Windsor Place Apartments, Wedowee,
died Friday, Aug. 11, 1995, at Clay County Hospital in Ashland after a brief illness.
Miss Kitchens, a native of Randolph County, was a member of Levens Baptist Church,
a homemaker and for many years the Levens community's correspondent to county
newspapers.
Survivors include one brother, Harris Kitchens of Roanoke; one niece, Ruby Cofield of
Newell; one nephew, James Messer of LaGrange, Ga.; and a host of great-nieces and
great-nephews.
Memorial services for Miss Kitchens were Saturday, Aug. 12 at 2 p.m. from Levens
Baptist Church, the Rev. Ferrell Cofield officiating.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to Levens Baptist
Church.

Jim T. Boyd
(OXFORD) Jim T. Boyd, 59, of Oxford died Monday, Aug. 14, 1995, at his residence
after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Benefield Funeral Home in
Wedowee, with the Revs. Curtis Collett and Sherman Thompson officiating. Burial will
follow in Levens Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Boyd is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rebecca Boyd of Oxford; two sons, Jimmy
Boyd and Tim Boyd of Oxford; his father, Ralph Boyd of Wedowee; and seven
grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Clarence Parrish, David Vingers, Bill Harvel, Bob Harvel, Paul
Watson and Elton Boyd.
Mr. Boyd was born in Randolph County on Aug. 31, 1935, to Ralph and Vester Harvel
Boyd. He had lived in Oxford for the past 35 years. He was retired from U.S. Pipe
Company after 30 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army as a military
policeman. He was a former member of the Anniston City Council and Park and
Recreation Board, was chairman of the Civil Service Board and was a Baptist by faith.
Mr. Boyd will lie in state at Benefield Funeral Home in Wedowee. The family will
receive friends until one hour prior to funeral services. Mr. Boyd will lie in state at the
church for one hour prior to funeral services.
The family requests that donations be made to East Alabama Hospice.

Ellen Odessa Gay
(WADLEY) Funeral services for Mrs. Ellen Odessa Gay, 91, of Wadley were
Saturday, Aug. 12, 1995, at 2 p.m. from Wadley Methodist Church, with the Revs. Bennie
Cosper and David Jones officiating. Burial was at Wadley Cemetery.
Mrs. Gay died Thursday, Aug. 10, 1995, at Randolph County Hospital after a short
illness.
A Randolph County native and lifelong resident of Wadley, she was born Sept. 18,
1903, daughter of John Will and Lavonia Ann Bashee Elliott. She was a member of
Wadley Methodist Church, where she had served as pianist until age 85, and was retired
from West Point Pepperell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wylie Mitchell
Gay, and a son Hubert Anderson Gay.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Sweatt of Wadley and Catherine Kilgore of
Sylacauga; two sons, Elliott Gay of Wadley and John Robert Gay of Augusta, Ga.;
six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Kilgore, Robert Gay, John Gay, Tony Sweatt, Charlie Hilburn
and Bill Hodges.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Wadley First Methodist
Church.

Faye Cofield Sikes
(GRAND SALINE, Tex.) Faye Cofield Sikes, who was born Sept. 26, 1922, in
Newell, Ala., died Aug. 16, 1995, in Grand Saline. She was a homemaker and a resident
of Grand Saline.
Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Arthur Sikes of Wills Point, Tex.; son and
daughter-in-law, Brig. Gen. Arthur O. Jr. and Lt. Col. Carol Sikes; daughter and
son-in-law, Marilyn and Jeff Saams; grandchildren Kimberly, Lauren and David Saams;
and sister Mildred Craft.
Services were at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, 1995, at Restland Wildwood Chapel,
Dallas, Tex., the Rev. Newell Hall officiating. Interment was in Restland Memorial Park,
Dallas.

Thurman L. Hank Shaw
(WOODLAND) Thurman L. Hank Shaw, 72, of Rt. 1, Woodland, died Monday,
Aug. 21, 1995, at Veterans Hospital, Tuskegee, after a short illness.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Benefield Funeral Home
Chapel, with the Rev. Donald Spradlin officiating. Burial will follow in Ephesus Church of
Christ cemetery in Ephesus, Ga.
Mr. Shaw is survived by a special friend, Lessie Mae Crenshaw, and several cousins.
Pallbearers will be Denzil Crenshaw, Paul Brown, Waymon Smith, Basil Spradlin,
Johnny Spradlin and David Daniel.
Mr. Shaw was born in Randolph County on April 29, 1923, to West and Zadie
Robinson Shaw. He was a veteran of World War II and was a retired farmer.

(WEDOWEE) Lincoln Key, 74, of Rt. 1, Wedowee, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 1995,
at Wedowee Hospital.

Methodist Church, with the Revs. Paul Conway, Dorsey White and Leron Murphy
officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Key is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jimmie Key of Wedowee; one daughter, Linda
Gosdin of Wedowee; one granddaughter, Rebecca Mize of Wedowee; one step-daughter,
Katie Thompson of Roopville, Ga.; two step-sons, David Edward Johnson of Franklin,
Ga., and Frank Mark Spradlin of Augusta, Ga.; four step-grandchildren; three great-
grandchildren; three brothers, Harold Key of Wedowee, Basil Key of Eastaboga and Billy
Key of Oxford; and five sisters, Nora Craft, Mara Humphrey and Naomi Hill of Wedowee
and Ethel Vitalis and Betty Hendrix of Huntsville.
Pallbearers were Lloyd Craft, Tim Key, Windel Key, Junior Fincher, Joney Fincher,
Kenneth Holloway, James Hill and Edga Humphrey.
Mr. Key was a native of Clay County, born on July 21, 1921, to William Wesley and
Weda East Key. He was retired as a truck driver with civil service and was a member of
Union Hill Congregational Methodist Church. He was a veteran of World War II.

Etha Hanson Kirby
(GRAHAM) Etha Hanson Kirby, 82, of Graham, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 1995, in
Tanner Medical Center, Carrollton, Ga., following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Cleburne County Nov. 4, 1912, the daughter of the late Jim and Lora
Butler Hanson. Mrs. Kirby was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of Highland
Garden Baptist Church, and a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Horace A. Kirby of Graham; two sons, Ed Kirby of
Daphne and Don Kirby of Harper Heights, Texas; four grandchildren; one great-
grandchild; and two brothers, Ambers Hanson of Auburn and Aubry Hanson of Graham.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Rainwater-West

Arnold B. Heflin
(ROANOKE) Arnold B. Heflin, 92, of Roanoke died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 1995, at
Roanoke Health Care Facility.
Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 19, at noon at Friendship Baptist Church,
Broughton, with the Rev. R. L. Heflin and the Rev. Calvin Trammell officiating. Burial
was in the adjoining cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Judalia Willoughby Heflin of Roanoke; two sons,
James Heflin and Royce Heflin of Los Angeles, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Minnie
Calhoun of Lansing, Kansas, Mrs. Margaret Marbury of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Ms. Effie
Murray of Los Angeles; a sister, Mrs. Mayme Wilkerson of Roanoke; 12 grandchildren
and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Heflin was a native of Randolph County, son of the late James H. and Fannie Bell
Byrdsong Heflin. He was a lifelong member of Friendship Baptist Church (Broughton
community), where he served as a deacon. Mr. Heflin was a farmer and a lumber mill
worker.
Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Friendship Baptist Church. Active pallbearers
were grandsons and nephews of the deceased, and flower attendants were his
granddaughters.
Clark Memorial Funeral Service of Roanoke was in charge of arrangements.

H. W. Hulett' Bailey
(WOODLAND) H. W. (Hulett) Bailey, 79, of Woodland died Thursday, August 17,
1995, at George H. Lanier Hospital, Valley, Ala.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at Prospect Congregational
Methodist Church, the Revs. Ridley Parmer and Leron Murphy officiating. Burial was in
the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Bailey is survived by three sons, Cecil Bailey, Clifford Bailey and Roger Bailey, all
of Woodland; five grandchildren, Michael Bailey, Pam Bailey, Andy Bailey, Anita Bailey
and Josh Jennings, all of Woodland; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Arnold
Bailey of Woodland and Jeff Bailey of Valdosta, Ga.; and five sisters, Eva Lewis of
Woodland, Geneva Gregory of Roanoke, Mary Watson of Valley, Julie Wilson of
LaGrange, Ga., and Audrey Wood of Ft. Worth, Tex.
Pallbearers were Michael Bailey, Andy Bailey, Josh Bailey, Woodrow Wilson, Randy
Jennings, Q. C. Moore, Rufus Alsabrook and Mutt Smith.
Mr. Bailey was born on Feb. 11, 1916, to Thomas Jefferson and Ruby South Bailey in
Randolph County. He was preceded in death by his wife[,] Eula Bailey and one daughter,
Gwin Wilson. He was a farmer.

Virginia Ann Pike
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Virginia Ann Pike, 53, of Roanoke were Tuesday,
Aug. 22, 1995, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. S. T. Janney and
Stiles Akins officiating. Burial was at Pike Family Cemetery.
Mrs. Pike died suddenly Sunday, Aug. 20, at her home.
A former resident of Carroll County, Ga., she was born there March 22, 1942,
daughter of Stiles and Velma Morris McGuffin.
She is survived by her husband, Noah Pike of Roanoke; two daughters, Donna Akins
and Penny Akins of Roanoke; two sons, Johnny Akins and Danny Akins of Roanoke; a
sister, Ruth Akins of Five Points; two brothers, Charles McGuffin of Florida and Stiles
McGuffin, Jr., of Hogansville, Ga.; a half-sister, Bonnie Baxter of Hawthorne, Fla.; and
seven grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Johnny Akins, Danny Akins, William Akins, Eddie Akins, Wade
Daniel and Jason Akins.

Charles M. Cavender
(FORT WORTH, Texas) Charles M. Cavender, 66, a radio technician and deputy
sheriff for Tarrant County, Texas, died Monday, Aug. 21, 1995, at his home.
Funeral services were Friday, Aug. 25, at Greenwood Funeral Home, Fort Worth,
Texas. Mr. Cavender was born March 11, 1929, in Roanoke, Ala., and was a Fort Worth
resident since 1965. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the
Korean War.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Gladys Cavender of Fort Worth; three
daughters, Vicki Hardee of Fort Worth, Linda Richards of Southgate, Calif., and Donna
Diamond of Fort Carson, Colo.; two sons, Jonathan Cavender of Decatur, Texas, and
Allan Cavender of Paradise, Texas; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, Ford Cavender of
LaGrange, Ga., and Gordon Cavender of Notasulga, Ala.; and one sister, Mary Louise
Cavender Robinson of Dallas, Texas.

(WADLEY) Graveside services for Mary Faye Stephens, 70, of Wadley, formerly of
East Point, Ga., were Monday, Aug. 28, 1995, at 3 p.m. at Concord Primitive Baptist
Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Stephens died Sunday, Aug. 27, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
A native of Fairfax, she was born Oct. 23, 1924. She was a homemaker, a member of
East Point Church of God and the widow of Milledge M. Stephens.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Daniel of Wadley and Myris Greathouse
of LaGrange, Ga., and several nieces and nephews.

Etta Lee (Polly) Sanders
(WADLEY) Etta Lee (Polly) Sanders, 86, of Wadley died Saturday, Aug. 26, 1995, at
Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
Funeral services were at Sanders Funeral Home in LaFayette at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug.
28, with burial at Milltown Cemetery in Milltown. The Rev. John Cole and the Rev.
Vernon Brown officiated.
Surviving are one daughter, Patricia Ray of Roanoke; one son, Bobby Joe Sanders of
Marysville, Calif.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Sanders was a native of Chambers County, born Aug. 22, 1909. She was a
homemaker and a member of Milltown Baptist Church, Milltown.

Wealthy Valentine Sikes
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Graveside services for Wealthy Valentine Sikes, age 82, of
LaGrange, formerly of Roanoke, will be Thursday, Aug. 31, 1995, at 2 p.m. from Union
Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Arnold Henry officiating.
Mrs. Sikes died Tuesday, Aug. 29, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange after
a short illness.
A native of Wedowee, she was born Feb. 14, 1913, daughter of Jeff and Ettie Reaves
Landers. She was a homemaker and a member of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Worley of Horseshow, N.C.; three
granddaughters, Kimberly Poteat of Candler, N.C., Candace Crawford of Mills River,
N.C., and Nicole Tippet of Dunkin, S.C.; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters,
Elizabeth Bolt of LaGrange and Edith Sipple of Columbia, S.C.
The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home after 6 p.m., Wednesday, Aug.
30. They request no flowers and suggest memorial contributions be made to the church.
Pallbearers will be Mike Worley, Mark Poteat, Ronnie Tippet and Fred Pitts.

Joni Christine Rollins
(WOODLAND) Joni Christine Rollins, 16, of Rt. 2, Woodland died Thursday, Aug.
24, 1995, at Children's Hospital, Birmingham, as the result of an automobile accident.
Funeral services were at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Woodland First Congregational
Methodist Church, with the Rev. Earl Rollins and the Rev. Vernon Willis officiating.
Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Miss Rollins is survived by her parents, Paul and Becky Rollins of Woodland; one
brother, Josh Rollins, and one sister, Jenny Rollins, both of Woodland; her grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Rollins, Sr., and maternal grandmother Janice Sikes of Roanoke; and
a host of uncles, aunts and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandmother Helen
Rollins and grandfather Bobby Gene Benefield.
Pallbearers were Scott Rollins, Steve Rollins, Jamie Benefield, Clark Benefield, Mike
Hope and John Entrekin.
Honorary pallbearers were cousins and uncles Bo Rollins, Kenny Rollins, Lance
Rollins, Wade Rollins, Don Rollins, Keith Benefield, Gene Benefield and Nathan Sikes.
Miss Rollins was born in Carrollton, Ga., on Nov. 21, 1978. She was in the 11th grade
at Woodland High School and was a member of the Woodland softball team, FHA, and
Woodland First Congregational Methodist Church. She was an employee of Sav Max in
Roanoke, where she worked as a cashier.

James Theo Anglin
(VALLEY) James Theo Anglin of Valley, 57, died at his residence Monday, Aug. 28,
1995.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at Friendship Christian
Church, the Rev. Marion Phelps and the Rev. Ron York officiating. Interment will be in
Fairview Cemetery, Valley.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Anglin; a daughter, Kathy Wagner of Valley; two
sons, Dywayne Anglin and Shane Anglin of Valley; two brothers, Jerry Anglin of Conyers,
Ga., and Terry Anglin of LaGrange, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
Mr. Anglin was born on June 12, 1938 in Wehadkee, Randolph County, Ala., the son
of Vernon Jack and Eathel Anglin. He attended public schools there, graduated from
Southern Union State Junior College in business, and attended various colleges and
universities throughout the U.S. while serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was on flying
status for 13 years and served 2 1/2 years of combat duty in the Vietnam War. He was a
senior master sergeant when he retired in 1979.
Mr. Anglin was a civic and community leader. He had been a Republican candidate for
the Chambers County Commission. He was a member of Valley Masonic Lodge #516,
Chattahoochee Valley Historical Society, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans,
Veterans of Foreign Wars, Retired Enlisted Association and Friendship Christian Church,
where he was a deacon.
Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service/Valley.

(WOODLAND) Infant Stormie Faith Heard, age 4 days, died Wednesday, Aug. 23,
1995, in Children's Hospital, Birmingham.
Funeral services were at 4 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 24, at Woodland First Congregational
Methodist Church, with the Rev. Earl Rollins officiating. Burial was in the adjoining
cemetery.
She is survived by her parents, Bobby and Kristie Heard of Woodland; one brother,
Casey Heard of Woodland; maternal grandparents Jerolin Allen and Phenix Harrington of
Woodland; and her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Heard.
