BARR, Wray A. "Shark", 1982
WRAY A. (Shark) BARR, 81, of Barr Run Rd., Mariana, died Wednesday, April 28,
1982, at his residence.
A son of Charles F. and Olive Gayman Barr, he was born Feb. 19, 1902, in West
Bethlehem Township.
Mr. Barr was a member of the First Christian Church of Mariana and attend Barr
School. He had been employed by the Pennsylvania department of Highways and
later worked for J & L Steel Company at their Gateway Mine for 30 years, prior
to retiring in 1965.
A life-long resident of Bethlehem Township, he was a social member of the
American Legion Post 744, Mariana; the Marianna Sportsmen's Club; and UMWA Local
6330.
Surviving are his wife, Cecil B. (Fluff) Moore Barr; two sons: Robert A. of
Marianna, and Andrew (Jack) of Beallsville; two daughters: Mrs. David E.
(Jeanne) Ball of Indiana RD4 and Mrs. Robert (Mary Louise) Lucatorto of
Washington, Pa.: 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren: a sister, Mrs.
Robert J. (Mary E.) Yoters, Marianna RD1; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, David E. Ball Jr.; three brothers:
George, Kenneth and Joseph Barr.
Friends will be received from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. today (Friday) at the
E. Richard Nichol Funeral Home, Mariana, where services will be held at 2 p.m.
Saturday, May 1. The Rev. Domenick Sgro will officiate. Interment will be in
Horn Cemetery, Marianna.

ORRIN A. BROWN, 74, LaHabra, Calif., died Wednesday, April 7, 1982, in
LaHabra, Calif.
The son of Uriah and Elsie Brown, he was born Nov. 5, 1907, in Clymer.
Surviving are his wife, Ellen Brown, two daughters and one son, all of
California; three brothers: Franklin, Indiana; Wayne and Floyd, Florida; one
sister, Florence Helman, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Clyde; one sister, Marie
Smith.
Interment was made on April 10, in Rose Hills Memorial Park, California.

BUTZ, Mary M. (BOWERS) ERNEST, 1985
Mary M. Butz
Mrs. Butz, 85, of 827 5th Ave., Lakemont, died at 4:55 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4,
1985, in Mercy Hospital.
She was born Aug. 10, 1899, in East Freedom, the daughter of Frank P. and
Sarah (Butler) Bowers, and was twice married, first to Chauncey Ernest, who died
in 1919, then to August W. Butz, who died in 1963.
Surviving are a son, Frank H. Ernest of Hollidaysburg, nine grandchildren: 16
great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.
Mrs. Butz was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
She was a member of the American Legion, VFW and 40 et 8 Club, was past
president of the VFW's Women's Auxiliary and was a volunteer at Mercy Hospital,
Van Zandt VA Medical Center and the Red Cross.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday
in the E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home, Broad Avenue.
Interment in Riverview Cemetery, Leamersville.

Margaret L. Davidson
Mrs. Margaret L. Davidson, 90, Epworth Manor, Tyrone, died Thursday afternoon,
March 18, 1999, at the manor, following an extended illness.
She was born July 16, 1908, in Tyrone, the daughter of Herbert and Bessie
(Shively) Shaffer. She married Charles Francis Davidson Oct. 3, 1934. He
preceded her in death in 1962.
Mrs. Davidson was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Tyrone.
Surviving are three sisters: Helen Ferner, Betty and Pauline, all of Tyrone.
She was preceded in death by a son, Charles E.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with
the Rev. Charles J. Fitzgerald officiating. Interment to follow in Eastlawn
Cemetery. Contributions in her memory may be made to Wesley United Methodist
Church, 1200 Logan Ave., Tyrone, Pa., 16686. Mrs. Davidson was preceded in death

Helen M. Dempsey
Mrs. Helen M. Dempsey, 84, 1201 S. 27th St., Logan Hills Apartments, died
Friday morning, March 19, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital.
She was born April 17, 1914, in Altoona, the daughter of the late William and
Alice (Hurm) Mays. She married Joseph F. Dempsey in Philadelphia. He died in
1972.
Mrs. Dempsey was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was a former
deaconess and Sunday school teacher.
She was a self-employed beautician.
Surviving are a daughter, Lynn of San Mateo, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Mary E. Dorraugh
Mrs. Mary E. Dorraugh, 97, Presbyterian Home of Hollidaysburg, died Late
Friday morning, Aug. 23, 1996, at the home.
She was born Aug. 16, 1899, in Shippensburg, the daughter of William and Sara
(Glaser) Crusey. She married James V. Dorraugh in 1917 in Hagerstown, Md. He
died July 3, 1963.
Mrs. Dorraugh was a member of the Chambersburg Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are a daughter, Sally Graybill of Altoona; two sisters: Elva Bowings
of Chambersburg and Ada Nichol of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two granddaughters; and
two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Dorraugh was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Fellinger, in
February 1992.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation.

MRS. EILEEN (POWELL) DURIKA, 55, of Blairsville RD 3, died Monday, April 26,
1982, at the Latrobe Area Hospital.
A daughter of William C. and Vernie A. (Hileman) Powell, she was born Aug. 5,
1926, in Livermore.
Mrs. Durika was a member of SS. Simon and Jude Roman Catholic Church,
Blairsville. She was a graduate of Blairsville High School, class of 1944.
Surviving are her husband, John P., Blairsville RD 3; two sons;: William G.,
U.S. Air Force, Germany; John P. Jr., at home: two grandchildren: her mother,
mentioned above; a brother, William G. Powell, Blairsville; four sisters: Mrs.
Donald (Helen) Calhoun, Mrs. Lois DeSalle, Mrs. Howard (Ruth) Richards and Mrs.
Roy (Joanne) Cribbs, all of Blairsville.
She was preceded in death by her father, William, in 1964.
Friends will be received from 7 - 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Thursday at the Richard L. Shoemaker Funeral Home, Blairsville. Mass of
Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30a.m. Friday at SS Simon and Jude R.C.
Church, Blairsville, with the Rev. Fr. Chester Reimer, the celebrant. Interment
will follow in SS. Simon and Jude Cemetery, Blairsville.
A Wake service will be held Thursday evening at the funeral home.

GEARHART, Paul R., Jr., 1999
Paul R. Gearhart Jr., 68, Steubenville, Ohio, formerly of Altoona, died Monday
afternoon, Jan. 25, 1999, in Canton, Ohio, following a lengthy illness.
He was born June 30, 1930, in Altoona, the son of the late Paul R. and Bertha
E. (Reese) Gearhart. He married Sylvia Pritchett in July 1950.
Mr. Gearhart retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. in Steubenville,
following 36 years of service.
He was a 1948 graduate of Altoona High School.
Mr. Gearhart was a Marine Corps veteran.
Surviving are his wife; five daughters: Debra Sohovich of Canton, Denise
Chandler of Euless, Texas, Michelle Parks of Baltimore, Pamela Bennett of
Wintersville, Ohio, and Valerie Fletcher of Fort Worth, Texas; two sons: Paul
Jr. of Riverside, Calif. and Jeffery of Virginia Beach, Va.; 16 grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild.

JOHNSTON, Miriam A., 1996
Mrs. Miriam A. Johnston, 79, 304 2nd Ave., died early Friday morning, Aug. 23,
1996, at Altoona Hospital, following a brief illness.
She was born April 21, 1917, in Altoona, the daughter of LaMont and Margaret
(Kuhn) Cherry. She married Edgar F. Johnston Oct. 10, 1936, in Altoona. He
died May 9, 1985.
Mrs. Johnston was a 1935 graduate of Altoona High School.
Surviving are a son, Donald R. of Altoona; a daughter, Marlene Zeak of
Duncansville; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Daniel R. Myers
Funeral Home.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday by the Rev. Andrew R. Morgan.
Interment at Alto-Reste Park.

Anna M. Merilli
Mrs. Anna M. Merilli, 86, Bellmeade Manor, formerly of 1602 Logan Ave., died
Friday, March 19, 1999, at Altoona Hospital, following an extended illness.
She was born Aug. 25, 1912, in Altoona, the daughter of the late Thomas and
Rose (Carbone) Caporuscio. She married John M. Merilli. He died March 11,
1980.
Mrs. Merilli was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.
She enjoyed cooking.
Surviving are a daughter, Joanne Beringer of Altoona; a son Robert J. of
Altoona; two sisters: Mary Pipetti and Helen Martin, both of Altoona; two
brothers; Nicholas and Joseph, both of Altoona; three grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Catholic Church. Committal at Calvary Mausoleum.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Santella
Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held Sunday.
Mrs. Merilli is survived by three grandchildren: Philip, Kathy Wagner and
Michael; three great-grand-children: Kyla, Danielle and Shelby; a daughter-in-
law, Theresa Tartaglio; a son-in-law, Robert Beringer; and numerous nieces and
nephews.
In memory of Anna, donations may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic
Church.

Mrs. Miller of 1224 Lenore St., Johnstown, died Sunday, March 16, 1986, in her
home.
She was born in Paint Township, the daughter of Norman S. and Ellen S.
(Weaver) Berkey, and married Edward G. Miller.
Surviving are two sisters: Ruth and Alice of Hollidaysburg, and a half-
sister, Myrtle Pevahouse of Windber.
There will be no visitation.

FLORY J. NOVOTNEY, 61, Kelso, Wash., formerly of Heilwood, died Tuesday, April
27, 1982, in St. John's Hospital Longview, Wash.
The son of Florian and Julia Novotney, he was born Feb. 24, 1921.
Mr. Novotney was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Kelso, Wash.
Surviving are one brother, Frank, Heilwood, three sisters: Mrs. Helen Miller,
Belsano, Mrs. Mary Foleckemer, Ebensburg RD 2; Mrs. Katherine Menefee,
Williamsville, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Ann Healy and Mrs.
Mary Bobby.

VICTOR L. OAST
Of 870 25th St., died at 10 a.m. yesterday, June 1, 1973, at Altoona Hospital
after a lengthy illness. He was born Sept. 25, 1902, at South Fork, a son of
Fred and Hattie Oast, and married Dorothy Snyder on May 3, 1931. Surviving are
his wife, two children, George E. and Mrs. Patricia Benz of Altoona, and three
grandchildren. Mr. Oast was a self-employed barber, retiring in 1959, and a
member of the First Baptist Church. Friends will be received in the Krish
Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Hollidaysburg Free Library Treasurer Dies
Joseph W. O'Brien, 82, of 533 Garber St., Hollidaysburg, retired official of
the Altoona Division, A&P Tea Co., and long active in the Hollidaysburg Free
Public Library, died at 10:20 a.m. March 26, 1969, in Altoona Hospital, where he
was admitted Tuesday, after an extended illness.
He was born June 24 1886, in Hollidaysburg, a son of John and Elizabeth (Hart)
O'Brien, and in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg, married Edna Snively,
who died Feb. 3, 1964.
Surviving are two children, Mrs. Fred Gieg of Blairmont Terrace and John D. of
Stamford, Conn., and three grandchildren.
Mr. O'Brien was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg Lions
Club and Heidelberg Country Club. He was the oldest member of the Park Hills
Golf Club.
He retired in 1952 as an assistant general superintendent of the A&P after 35
years of service which began as manager of the first A&P store in Hollidaysburg
and continued as superintendent of the Altoona Division. Earlier he had been
associated with the Citizens Bank of Hollidaysburg.
Mr. O'Brien was a member of the Hollidaysburg Free Public Library board and
had served as its treasurer for the past 15 years.
Friends will be received in the Plank Funeral Home, Hollidaysburg, from 7 to
10 p.m. today.

JOHN T. O'DONNELL
Of 18 Granada Way, died at 6:02 a.m. yesterday, May 10, 1973, in Altoona
Hospital, where he was admitted May 1, after a lengthy illness. He was born at
Turtle Creek on March 6, 1904, a son of John T. and Mary E. (McGuire) O'Donnell,
and married Kathryn Shruff on April 28, 1927, in Altoona. Surviving are his
wife, three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Mathew of Bellwood, Mrs. Ann Moore of
Duncansville and Mrs. Callista Risconsin of Altoona and a niece. Mr. O'Donnell
was a member of St. Therese's Catholic Church. He retired in 1966, having been
self-employed. Friends will be received in the Krish Funeral Home from 7 to 9
p.m. tomorrow and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Former Store Owner Dies
George E. Ofiesh, 78, of 2629 Broad Ave., former co-owner of the Ofiesh
Confectionery Store at 1112 16th St., died at 5:05 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 1973,
in Mercy Hospital, where he was admitted Jan. 29, after an extended illness.
He was born Sept. 17, 1894, in Bickfia, Lebanon, a son of Elia and Mariam
(Ofiesh) Ofiesh.
Surviving are two brothers and a sister, Richard E., with whom he resided, and
Tofick E. and Mrs. Emily Ofiesh of Altoona.
Mr. Ofiesh retiree in 1964, after being in business with his two brothers for
40 years.
He was a member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church.
Friends will be received in the Replogle Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9
p.m. today and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. tomorrow.

ORNER, Donald R., 1979
DONALD R. ORNER, 67, of Box 430, RD 4, died at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25,
1979, in Mercy Hospital, after a brief illness. Known as Dick, Mr. Orner
retired as a machinist from Conrail's Juniata shops in 1976, after 28 years'
service. He was born Dec. 22, 1911, in Altoona, the son of Harry Elwood and
Sara Margaret (Troutwein) Orner, and April 23, 1934, in Cumberland, Md., married
Dorothy Ruth Hauser. Surviving are his wife, three children, Mrs. L. Joann
Collins of Columbus, Ohio; Donald Jr. and Mrs. Jennifer Luciano of Altoona; 13
grandchildren and nine brothers and sisters, Mrs. Mary Smith, Samuel, Albert,
Paul, Mrs. Evelyn Clark, Mrs. Lena Herrick and Mrs. Fay Jackson of Altoona, Mrs.
Marjorie Gilling of Dubois and Mrs. Hazel Burley of Detroit, Mich. Mr. Orner
was a member of the Wehnwood United Methodist Church. Friends will be received
from 3 to 9 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Mauk & Yates
Funeral Home, Juniata. Interment in Grandview Cemetery.

Of 709 N. 1st St., Bellwood, died at 6:40 p.m. yesterday, Jan. 9, 1973, in the
VA Hospital after an extended illness. He was born Jan 27, 1892, in Huntingdon,
a son of George and Blanche (Cornelius) O'Shell, and married Flora Gummo on Feb.
25, 1921. Surviving are his wife, eight children, Donald of Bellwood, Mrs.
Dorothy Nolan of Tipton, Kenneth of Leigh Acres, Fla., Richard of Bellefonte,
Mrs. Jean McClellan of Bellwood, Mrs. Patricia Redman of Bristol, Conn., Mrs.
Shirley Sprankle of Tyrone and James of Redmond Valley, Calif.: 36
grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and six brothers and sisters, Mrs.
Goldie Lehman of Greenwood, Curtis of Oregon, Harold, Angus and Matilda of
Bellwood and Ray of Sinking Valley. Mr. O'Shell was a member of the Bellwood
Sportsmen's Association, Eagles, VFW, Logan Valley Broncs and the Logan Valley
Baptist Church, Bellwood. He was a bartender at the Eagles for many years. He
served in the Army in World War I. Friends will be received in the Johnson
Funeral Home, Bellwood, from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

GEORGE C. OVER
Of Roaring Spring RD 1, died at 3:50 a.m. today, March 16, 1973, at the home
of his daughter, Mrs. Edna Dilling of Boothwyn, after an extended illness. Mr.
Over was a retired farmer. He was born Oct. 22, 1901, in Woodbury, a son of
Howard and Fannie (Hershberger) Over, and married Ruth E. Ebersole on Nov. 2,
1920, in Cumberland, Md. She preceded him in death. Surviving are two
children, Mrs. Dilling and K. Alton of Woodbury; six grandchildren, seven great-
grandchildren and four brothers and a sister, Edward W. of Woodbury, Cyrus and
Donald of Roaring Spring RD, Harold B. of New Enterprise and Mrs. Dorothy Pepple
of Bedford. Mr. Over was a member of the Woodbury Church of the Brethren.
Friends will be received in the Weaver Funeral Home, Woodbury, from 2 to 4 and 7
to 9 p.m. tomorrow and in the Woodbury Church of the Brethren after 1 p.m.
Sunday.

MARY C. OVERBERGER
Of Hastings, died yesterday, April 24, 1973, at her home. She was born Aug.
27, 1900, in Hastings, a daughter of Paul A. and Sophia (Hoover) Strittmatter,
and married Casper Overberger, who preceded her in death. Surviving is a
brother, Otto of Latrobe. Mrs. Overberger was a member of the Rosary
Confraternity of St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Hastings. Friends will be
received in the Easly & Easly Funeral Home, Hastings, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9
p.m. today and tomorrow.

RETALLICK, Francis D., 1982
FRANCIS D. RETALLICK, 52, of Blairsville RD4, died Sunday, April 25, 1982, at
Shady Side Hospital, Pittsburgh.
A son of Thomas and Rosanna (Minnock) Retallick, he was born Mary 9, 1929, in
Roxbury, Conn.
Mr. Retallick was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Washington, Conn.
And a member of the American Nuclear Society.
He graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1951 with a BA in
mechanical engineering. He was a member of Pi Tau Sigma honorary fraternity and
the National Honorary Mechanical Engineering fraternity. Mr. Retallick was
employed by Westinghouse in Large.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth I. (Taylor) Retallick; two sons: Stuart D.
Blairsville RD 4; Gregory J., at home; a grandson; three brothers: Louis T.,
Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.: John J., Richford, Vt.; Sherman, Washington, Conn.; two
sisters: Mrs. Ronald (Doris) Waldron Washington, Conn.; Mrs. Linda Tooth,
Woodbury, Conn.
Friends will be received from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. Wednesday at the
Richard L. Shoemaker Funeral Home, Blairsville. Services will be conducted at
10 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of the funeral home, with Dr. Daniel S. Grubb,
officiating. Interment will follow in the Blairsville Cemetery.

ROSE, Margaret N. "Toot" (GRAVES), 1999
Margaret N. "Toots" Rose, 88, Taylor Apartments, died Monday morning, Jan. 25,
1999, at Beverly Healthcare-Hillview.
She was born June 25, 1910, in Tyrone, the daughter of the late Thomas and
Sara (Thomas) Graves.
Mrs. Rose was a member of and helped organize the Eighteenth Street Community
Church and helped organize the Bread of Life Chapel and the Philippians
Ministries. She was a missionary, choir member and a Sunday school attendant
and a member of the Loretto Prison Ministries.
She was a member of the Women's AGLOW, the Christian Friends, Blair Senior
Services, a volunteer at the Altoona Railroaders Museum and a member of Crime
Watch.
Surviving is a sister, Ellen Taliferro of Baltimore.

SHAFER, Charles Edin, 1996
Charles Edin Shafer, 61, 39 Montvale Road, Newark, Del., formerly of
Williamsburg, died Friday, Aug. 16, 1996, at Christiana Hospital, Christiana,
Del., following an extended illness.
He was born March 19, 1935, the son of James and Thelma (Swartz) Shaffer. He
married Nancy Neugebauer in 1991.
Mr. Shaffer was employed as a dye-maker by Westvaco, Newark, Del.
Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Penny of Newark; three sons: Charles Jr.,
Robbie and Tommy, all of Newark; two stepsons: David and Robert in Delaware; two
brothers: Don and Allen; and five grandchildren.
Interment was made Aug. 20, in Newark, Del.

Christian Samuel Way
Infant Christian Samuel Way, 1930 Hudson Ave., died Thursday, Aug. 22, 1996,
at home.
He was born July 17, 1996, in Altoona, the son of William Robert Kauffman and
Lori Lynn Way.
He attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
Surviving are his parents of Altoona; maternal grandparents: Gerrit C. and
Patricia L. Way of Altoona; paternal grandparents: Michael and Cindy Kauffman
of Altoona; maternal great-grandparents: Emily Turchetta of Altoona, and Lee
and Antonia Way of Carlisle; and paternal great-grandparents: C. Robert and
Erma Kauffman of Altoona, Mary and Michael Chulyak of Melbourne, Fla., and
William and Mary McLaughlin of Hollidaysburg.
Friends will be received from 1 to 2 p.m. today at Santella Funeral Home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Santella Funeral Home. Entombment at
Calvary Mausoleum.
Christian is also survived by four aunts: Beth Evans, Gina Way, Penny
Kauffman and Nina Lawrence.

WEYANDT, James W., 1985
Retired tax collector died at 70
James W. Weyandt, 70, of East Freedom RD1 died unexpectedly at 9:42 a.m.
Saturday, Aug. 3, 1985, in Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport.
Mr. Weyandt retired from General Refractories, Claysburg plant, in 1978, after
30 years' service. He also retired as a tax collector, for Greenfield Township
in 1980, after 18 years.
He was born Sept. 13, 1914, in Greenfield Township, the son of Elmer and
Lorena (Walter) Weyandt, and Dec. 28, 1935, in East Freedom, married Anna C.
Helsel.
Surviving are his wife, two children: James E. and Nancy J. Hoenstine of East
Freedom RD; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are seven brothers and sisters: S. Gladys Burket, Mary E.
Glass, Madeline Walter, Juniata Walter, Lucy Glass and Adam of East Freedom RD,
and Oliver of Claysburg.
Mr. Weyandt was a member of the Leamersville Church of the Brethren, where he
served as a deacon.
He was past president of the Claysburg Volunteer Fire Company and Freedom-
Greenfield Democrat Club. He was treasurer of the Claysburg Fund and a
volunteer for the Salvation Army and Claysburg Food Bank. He was a 1984
recipient of the Blair County Outstanding Senior Citizens Award.
Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. today in the Marvin C. Leslie
Funeral Home, Claysburg, and 12:30 to 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Leamersville Church
of the Brethren.
Interment in Alto-Reste Park.
