Mrs. Sarah Jane MCCLAIN BEATTY, aged 85 years, died Friday, January 14, 
1916, at her home, 613 Florence avenue, Avalon, after an illness of 
pneumonia. She was born in County Down, Ireland, and came to the United 
States and settled in Pittsburgh in 1851. She was married to William J. 
BEATTY in 1851. She was an aunt of the late George E. SMITH, better known 
as "Pittsburgh Phil". Mrs. BEATTY had been a member of the Fifth United 
Presbyterian Church, Northside, Pittsburgh, for more than thirty years, and 
at the time of her death was a member of the Avalon Presbyterian Church. 
She is survived by six daughters and five sons: Mrs. Mary J. DEMINGS of 
Avalon, with whom Mrs. BEATTY made her home; Mrs. James L. REED of the East 
End, Mrs. Emma RODGERS and Mrs. D. W. JAMES of the Northside, Mrs. Carrie 
FINCH of the West End, Mrs. Robert GRAHAM of Cleveland, Ohio; Samuel of 
Butler, William J. of Akron, Ohio; Henry H. of McDonald; Andrew K. of 
Roswell, Pa., and James of Wilkinsburg. There are thirty-nine grandchildren 
and twenty-five great-grandchildren. Mrs. BEATTY was a frequent visitor in 
McDonald and was quite well known here.
