BEATTY, John W.         September 29, 1924

        The death of John W. Beatty, Art Director Emeritus, of Carnegie
Art Gallery, Pittsburgh, occurred at Clifton Springs, New York, on
September 29.  Mr. Beatty had not been well during the summer, but was
not thought to be in a critical condition, and had gone to Clifton
Springs for treatments.  His end came suddenly Sunday morning.
        Mr. Beatty was a native of Pittsburgh, and for 25 years was Art
Director of Carnegie Art Gallery, relinquishing his office in 1922 when
in need of recuperation.
        He was successful in all his undertakings, and to him is due
the credit for the great Art Exhibitions held in Pittsburgh. Possessed
of an affable, pleasing address, he made friends of all with whom he
came in contact.  He was a Christian noble man in every respect.  His
death is a great lose to Pittsburgh and to Arts in the world at large. 
He held a greater acquaintance among world wide artists than any other
living man.  He nade many trips to Europe to secure the best works of
Art for his annual Art exhibitions
        He is survived by his wife, a son John, Jr., and two daughters,
Misses Helen and Katherine.  He was a brother of Mrs. Lowry, wife of the
Editor of the Indiana Times..
        The funeral service will be held Thursday afternoon.
