Dr. A.J. Simpson died April 10, 1939
Dr. A.J. Simpson for forty years a practitioner of medicine at Summerville,
died in the Adrian hospital, Punxsutawney, at 12:50 p.m., Monday, April 10,
1939, following an illness of two weeks, aged 70 years. Suffering from flu,
he took treatment at the hospital, returning home Friday of last week to
resume his practice. He suffered a relapse, his condition becoming alarming
he was rushed back to the hospital. An abscess of the ear penetrated the
brain which proved fatal.
Dr. Simpson was a graduate of the old Clarion State Normal School, attended
Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Ind., and received his medical degree at
the University of Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Jefferson County
Medical Society, and had served as president. He was a member of the
Summerville Lodge, I.O.O.F. and the American Legion, having been in the
service from May 21 to December 17, 1918. He was promoted from First
Lieutenant to the rank of Captain. Dr. Simpson was also a member of the
OfficersÕ Reserve Corps, holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel at the time
of his death. He was an elder of the Summerville Presbyterian church, and a
member of the board of education at Summerville.
Beloved by hundreds of patients whom he had served and given advice, his
passing will be keenly felt by many.
Dr. Simpson is survived by one son, James, one brother, Jay T. Simpson,
Roseville, Jefferson county, and three sisters, Mrs. J.E. Guthrie,
Summerville; Mrs. Edward Smith of Heathville, and Mrs. P.B. Corbett of
Corsica. One step-daughter, Mrs. Harry Allison, of Kittanning, also
survives. He was twice married to Ella Guthrie and Mrs. Jessie Slagle, both
of whom are deceased.
The son of Samuel and Mary (Fleming) Simpson, he was born July 15, 1868.
Funeral services in his memory were held at 2:00 oÕclock this Wednesday
afternoon from the Summerville Presbyterian church, conducted by the pastor,
Rev. Logan. The body was removed from the home to the church Wednesday at
10:00 oÕclock and from then until the hour of the service, hundreds whom he
had served and advised during his long practice in Summerville, filed by his
bier to pay their last earthly tribute to one whose service and sacrifice
for his community endeared him to the hearts of his fellow citizens.
