59th Regiment, Georgia Infantry 

59th Infantry Regiment was formed in the spring of
1862 with men from Jackson, Whitfield, Crawford,
Worth, and Turner counties. After serving for some
time in Georgia and North Carolina, the unit moved
to Virginia. Early in 1863 it was attached to
General G.T. Anderson's Brigade where it remained
for the balance of the war. The 59th fought at
Gettysburg, moved with Longstreet to assist Bragg at
Chickamauga, then served in the Kentucky Campaign.
Returning to Virginia, it took part in the conflicts
at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor,
the Petersburg siege north of the James River, and
the Appomattox operations. The unit lost more than
twenty-five percent of the 525 engaged at Gettysburg
and sustained 69 casualties from May 6 to April 14
and 85 from August 1 to December 31, 1864. Fifteen
officers and 251 men were present at the surrender.
Its field officers were Colonel Jack Brown;
Lieutenant Colonels Bolivar H. , Charles J. Harris,
and George R. Hunter; and Majors Mastin G. Bass and
William H. Fickling.---NPS, Civil War Soldiers and

Inf May 28 1862.  Died in hospital Jan 5 1865.

Walman, J.-Private Jan 8 1863. Deserted Jan 11 1863.

Weaver, Jackson-Private May 6 1862. Wounded in hip
at Funkstown Md July 10 1863, and captured near
there the same day. Transferred from U.S. General
Hospital Camden St Baltimore Md July 21 1864. Sent
to Pt Lookout Md July 21 1864. Paroled for exchange
Nov 1 1864. Received at Venus Point, Savannah River
Ga Nov 15 1864.  

Weed, P.-Private 1862. Appears only on roll to June
16 1862.

Wheeler, John W.-Pension records show he enlisted as
a private in 1862. Wounded in right hip at
Gettysburg Pa July 3 1863. Captured there July 10
1863.(Born near Richmond Va Aug 10 1833; died
Berrien Co Ga Dec 1923.)  He filed for pension in
Berrien Co.

Willis, Jefferson W.-Private May 6 1862. Detailed
for railroad service at Macon Ga in 1863. Roll for
Feb 1865, last on file, shows him present.

Wilson, Thomas J.-Private Jan 4 1863. Substitute for
Barney Hart. Deserted to enemy Feb 7 1865. Received
at Washington D.C. Feb 20 1865. Took oath of
allegiance to U.S. Govt. and was furnished
transportation to New York City. Enlisted in 1st
U.S. Maryland Cavalry.

Worsham, James-Private June 16 1862. Wounded and
captured at Knoxville Tenn Nov 29 1863. Died Jan 26
1865 Rock Island Illinois, Grave #1825.
