The Ex-Slaves Club

Mr. Editor: I want to say something about the Ex-slave club. The club was
organized at Putnam in July 1902, and has 111 members. Our object is to help
the sick, bury the dead and elevate morally the members of the club. Since our
organization we have paid out $32 for sick benefits and in June of this year we
paid out $12 for burial expenses of one of our members.

We are doing anything against the white people. Our motto is to be law-abiding
citizens, and we will not allow a lawbreaker to stay in our society. We are
sworn to present all violators of the law to the grand jury.

Now Mr. Editor I am a colored man but I want to do what is right and I hope you
will publish this as I think it will be to the good of the colored race.

Culin O—e— (Transcriber's note: last name is whited out in places)
