Sketch of Buena Vista

The following sketch of Buena Vista and her most prominent and enterprising 
businessmen is taken from Hobgood’s business directory card issued here last 
week:

Buena Vista, the county seat of Marion County, is situated on the Central of 
Georgia railroad, about half way between Columbus and Americus and contains a 
population of about 1,300.  Buena Vista is one of the prettiest towns in 
Georgia and has an elevation of about 800 feet above sea level.  Has splendid 
water, excellent natural drainage and is one of the healthiest places to be 
found.  The town is surrounded by a fine farming and fruit country.  The past 
few years much interest has been paid to raising peaches and the fruit is of 
high color and splendid flavor.  About 9,000 bales of cotton are annually 
shipped from this point, and the staple is recognized to be of the very best.  
The farmers, as a general rule, raise most of their supplies at home and are in 
a prosperous condition.  The merchants are wide-a-wake and many of the 
establishments would do credit to any city.  Buena Vista has a splendid and 
well patronized public school system, comfortable churches and all her secret 
orders are in a flourishing condition.  The people are clever and social and 
ever ready to extend a welcome hand to all good people who wish to cast their 
lot with them.

The Marion County Patriot is an excellent and up-to-date weekly and has a large 
circulation throughout this section and has one and is doing a good work for 
this town and county.

The Bank of Buena Vista which was established in 1889, has well arranged 
banking rooms, supplied with fire proof vault, fire and burglar proof safe, 
with time lock, guaranteeing absolute safety to stockholders and depositors.  
This bank has always enjoyed a good line of business and has paid since its 
organization over 8 percent dividends annually.  The officers are well known 
businessmen.  The president, C.H. McCall, is also a member of the large 
mercantile firm of Clements & McCall and an extensive farmer and fruit grower 
and conducts a large steam ginnery.  J.M. Lowe, the vice-president, is also 
extensively engaged in mercantile business, farming, etc., while the cashier, 
J.W. Roberts, who has been with the bank since its organization, has large 
farming and fruit interests and is well known.

Clements & McCall, dealers in general merchandise have been in business here 14 
years and have an extensive trade.  They do a large supply business and handle 
lots of the cotton that comes to this market.  R.E. Clements, of the firm, is 
also a member of the firm of Clements & Sons, furniture dealers, is a large 
property owner and is a director in the bank and is public school 
commissioner.  C.H. McCall, of the firm, is president of the Buena Vista Loan 
and Savings Bank, is a member of the City Council, is the largest fruit grower 
in the county, conducts a large steam ginnery and has large farming interests.

J.W. McCrary, dealer in dry goods, groceries and general merchandise, has been 
in business here 6 years.  He has a large store, two floors filled with 
everything in his line and has a big trade.  He is also a member of the firm of 
McCrary & Cook, liverymen, and is also interested in farming and milling.

McCrary & Cook conducts a large and well equipped livery, feed and sale stable 
and have a splendid line of turnouts of all kinds.   New rigs and good 
drivers.  J.W. McCrary is one of the largest and best known merchants here, and 
is extensively engaged in farming and fruit growing.  G.W. Cook, of the firm, 
and manager, devotes his entire time and attention to the business and does his 
best to please his patrons.

W.H. Brannon, druggist, has been in business here 5 years and has built up a 
splendid trade, making a specialty of prescription work, which department is in 
charge of W.W. Mulky, a graduate of the school of pharmacy of Perdue 
University, of Indiana, while the soda fount is presided over by Frank W. Lowe, 
a courteous and clever young man.  Mr. Brannon is also a member of the City 
Council, is Mayor protem.

W.C. Singleton, the well known fire insurance man, has been here the past 17 
years, was raised in the county and has a good business.  He has one of the 
strongest lines of companies doing business in the South.  Mr. Singleton is 
also the efficient Treas. of Marion County.

The Georgia Trading Co., one of the largest mercantile establishments in this 
part of the state, and one of the best known, have a large store filled with 
everything in their line, making a specialty of up to date goods and selling at 
lowest prices.  They buy in large lots and cater to the best class of trade.  
C.D. Moore, the secretary and treasurer, has been identified with business here 
the past 15 years and is a well known, experienced and enterprising merchant 
and is popular with the people.  He visits the northern markets twice a year 
and keeps right up with all the latest novelties.

J.E. Martin, dealer in hardware, etc., has a large store packed with everything 
in his line and has a fine trade.  He has been in business here 6 years, and 
was for 27 years a well known traveling man.  He makes a specialty of guns, 
pistols and farm implements.

The Reese House, a large two story brick, is located in the center of business 
and is well kept and receives a splendid patronage.  The proprietor, Dr. W.J. 
Reese, has been in the business here 10 years.  He is also County School 
Commissioner, which position he has held the past 10 years.

J.M. Lowe, dealer in dry goods, clothing, shoes, etc. has been in business here 
since 1866 and is one of the oldest and best known businessmen in the county.  
Mr. Lowe is also vice-president of the Buena Vista Loan and Savings Bank, has 
farming interest and was for 25 years Ordinary of Marion County.

Miss Irene Buchanan, who has been identified with the millinery business here 
the past 8 years, has just succeeded Mrs. J.E. Moore, and has just opened up 
one of the most complete and up to date stocks of millinery ever brought to 
this place.  She attends the large openings in the eastern markets and keeps 
right up with all the latest styles.

H.O. Daniel deals in horses, mules, vehicles, harness, etc. and conducts a 
first class livery, feed and sale stable.  He has a good line of rigs and does 
a nice business.  He is a young man, has been in business here 2 years and is 
well known and popular.

J.G. Lowe, dealer in staple and fancy groceries, etc., has been in business 
here 4 years and has built up a fine trade.  He is a young man, was raised here 
and is well known.

R.E. Clements & Son, dealers in furniture, buggies, wagons, harness and 
undertaking supplies, have been in business six years.  They carry a fine stock 
in their line.  R.E. Clements, of the firm, is also a member of the large 
mercantile firm of Clements & McCall.  C.M. Clements, the junior member and 
manager, was raised here and is well known.  He is interested in farming and 
fruit growing.

Mrs. M.B. McCrary, millinery, who has just opened up here, came from Butler, 
where she was in the business eight years.  She is an experienced milliner and 
has an up-to-date stock of everything in her line.  She is right up with all 
the latest styles and fashions.

Duncan & Parker Bros., dealers in dry goods, clothing, etc., have been in 
business here four years and have a good trade.  They have just opened up a 
large store at Columbus.  N.W. Parker, of the firm, is also sheriff of Marion 
County.

A.D. McComb, dealer in hardware, buggy and wagon material, etc., has been in 
the business here 10 years and has a nice trade.  He was for many years a well 
known blacksmith and wood workman.  He is the efficient and accommodating 
postmaster of Buena Vista, which position he has held the past 3 years.  He is 
recognized as one of the best and most accommodating postmasters the town has 
ever had.  His assistant, Miss Mattie Adams, is also very efficient and clever.

The Tharpe Hotel is a popular and well kept house and is well patronized.  The 
rooms are well furnished, good beds and everything first-class.  E.M. Tharpe, 
the prop’t., has been here nearly 50 years.

Wesley Jefferson, physician and druggist, has been in business here many years 
and been practicing medicine here the past 30 years.  He is one of the best 
known and most successful physicians in this part of the state.  He is also 
interested in farming and fruit growing.

J.C. Rigsby, blacksmith and wood workman, has a well equipped shop and does all 
kinds of repairing on wood and iron, and receives a splendid patronage.  He has 
been in the business here 33 years.

J.E. Lowe, dealer in staple and fancy groceries, has been in business here 9 
years.  He carries a large and full stock and has a nice trade.  He also deals 
in lumber.  He is also interested in fruit.

Willis & Chapman, blacksmiths, do all kind repairing on vehicles and 
agricultural implements, and are kept busy.  C.H. Willis, of the firm, is also 
the efficient city marshal.  T.E. Chapman, of the firm, also conducts an up-to-
date barber shop.

H.D. Passmore, the dentist, is a graduate of the Atlanta Dental College and has 
been practicing here 2 years.  He has a well equipped office, is right up in 
his profession and well patronized.

T.B. Rainey, attorney at law, has been practicing here nearly 3 years and is a 
well known and able young attorney and is building up a good practice.  He is a 
graduate of Mercer University.

J.E. Moore, dealer in furniture, crockery, buggies and undertaking supplies, 
has been identified with business here 15 years.  He also handles the New Home 
Sewing Machines and attachments.  He carries a full assortment of coffins, 
caskets and undertakers goods.

The Hotel Lowe, formerly the Globe Hotel, has recently been remodeled, 
renovated and put in first class condition.  The rooms are all newly and 
handsomely furnished and the table is as good as the best.  The proprietor, 
J.H. Lowe, has been in the business here 11 years.

Mrs. W.T. Foster, milliner, has been in business here 6 years.  She carries a 
full and up to date stock of the best goods in her line, strictly up to date 
and enjoys a fine patronage.

J.F. Pittman, the market man, keeps the best fresh meats that can be had and 
pays the highest prices for fat cattle.

R.M. Hair, dealer in notions, groceries, confectioneries, etc., has been in 
business nearly 2 years and has built up a nice trade.  He is a young man, was 
raised here and is well known.

E.M. Tharpe, Jr., dealer in fancy groceries, confectioneries, tobacco, cigars, 
etc. has been in business here 2 years and has a nice trade.  He makes a 
specialty of fresh family groceries and fine table delicacies.

I.W. Benson, conducts a well equipped pool room where everything is quiet and 
orderly and his place is popular.
