A Novel Ride

Quite a funny thing happened to several young ladies down below Draneville some
time ago. They were at church and from there they went to the home of Mr. Wm.
Clements. Arriving at Mr. C’s it was suggested to go over to Mr. O.R. Harris’
after scuppernongs, but all of Mr. Clements’ horses and mules were engaged.
Nothing daunted these young ladies hitched up old Ball, a gentle muly-headed
steer, to a small wagon and off they went. All steers have peculiarities and
this one was not an exception to the rule. He had been trained by his driver
to go at break-neck speed when the word “fodder” was used in a loud tone behind
him, and these young ladies, unacquainted with this peculiarity happened to use
the word “fodder” in discussing the crops along the road. Old Ball heard it
and that was enough. He immediately started off in a brisk run, despite the
coaxing and resistance offered by the young ladies, and never stopped until he
had turned into a little by road and landed in Mr. Jack Smith’s still house
yard. Old Ball perhaps got thirsty during his long run and wanted a drink of
peach and honey. No doubt the young ladies in their sudden and unexpected
predicament exclaimed, “oh! shucks!” instead of “fodder.”
