Mr. Benson was born June 19, 1936 in Marion County, the son of the late Joseph Whitt and Ruby Goodroe Benson. He lived in Marion County for most of his life and was a member of the Buena Vista United Methodist Church. He worked in the field of education in DeKalb County, Taylor County and Randolph County before returning to Buena Vista to take over the family business, Benson’s Store. He was an avid sports fan and eagerly followed the Georgia Bulldogs and the Marion County Eagles. His family adored him, and his greatest love was spending time with them. Survivors include his wife, Diana Benson of Buena Vista, GA; one sister, Jo Anne Rogers, Buena Vista, GA; two brothers, Brown Benson and wife Pat of Columbus, GA, and Sims Benson, Sr. and wife Burgin of Buena Vista, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Sunday, September 14, 2014 at 3:00. The family will receive visitors at Watson-Tante Funeral Home on Saturday, September 13, 2014 from 5:00 – 7:00. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Joanna McAfee Childhood Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 9537, Warner Robins, GA 31095-9537.
